2014 Commonwealth Games: Para-athletics, Wrestling, Shooting hit Glasgow today

Nigerian teams will start jetting in into Glasgow, Scotland venue of this year’s Commonwealth Games as from today as three teams  –  para-athletics, wrestling and shooting  –  are being expected in Glasgow for the Games that will commence on Wednesday.

An influential member of the advanced team of the National Sports Commission (NSC) who is also the Special Assistant on Technical Matters to the Director-General of the NSC, Mary Onyali said the advanced team have been working very hard to ensure that adequate arrangement was made for the Nigerian contingent for the Games to have a hitch free participation in the competition.

She also disclosed that the sports federations have confirmed their arrival for today and tomorrow in Glasgow.

“Three teams are expected to hit Glasgow tomorrow (today) and they are para-athletics, wrestling and shooting. We have been working day and night here in Glasgow around the clock making sure that the facilities are ready for the expected Nigerian contingent and also for the athletes to be well received. I would say it’s been so far so good.

“We have been working inside the venues to ensure that all facilities are intact. Also we are ready to receive the athletes and their officials as they come in to give them orientation tours as to where they are expected to hold their events such as venues for their training and competition . We are ready to give each team as they come a familiarisation tour for them to know the venues and programmes of their events too.

“The organisational aspect of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games has been wonderful. The organisers have put in a lot of hard work to ensure  it comes out successful and fulfilling too. They have worked hard to ensure that the environment is conducive for the athletes to give out their best performance in the Games.

“Everything is centered around the Village. Everything is within five to 10 minutes walking distance as far as facilities is concerned. So the environment is quite friendly and conducive for the (Nigerian) athletes to perform well”, Onyali assured.

Commonwealth Games journalists upset by charge for information

Reporters are  complaining that  Commonwealth Games organisers want them to pay to obtain “basic preview information”, reports the Sports Journalists’ Association  (SJA).

On the eve of the event in Glasgow, the journalists say they must pay £70 plus VAT to access “simple details such as competition timetables and athlete entries.”

The so-called GamesINFO also includes biographies, historical results, transportation details, weather reports and, during the Games, results and athlete quotes.

The editor of Athletics Weekly, Jason Henderson, is quoted as saying: “I was shocked when Glasgow 2014 told me that I had to pay £84 just to see a track and field timetable.

“We usually run the timetable – which is the most basic piece of information – in our preview issue for the Games, but I was directed toward the rate card team and encouraged to sign up to myGamesINFO.”

GAZA CONFLICT: UEFA ban Ejide’s club from ‘home’ games

Super Eagles goalkeeper Austin Ejide and his teammates at Hapoel Beer Sheva, have been asked to play their home games in the Champions League qualifiers outside Israel.

UEFA have decided that no games in its competitions can be played in Israel due to the current security situation in the country.

UEFA’s emergency committee met on Wednesday, and determined that fixtures cannot be played in Israel for the time being.

Israeli clubs involved in forthcoming fixtures have been requested to propose alternative venues outside of Israel’s territory for their home legs in the Champions League and Europa League, UEFA said.

It means Maccabi Tel-Aviv will have to play their forthcoming Champions League qualifier against FC Santa Coloma of Andorra outside of Israel.

Hapoel Beer Sheva, Hapoel Kiryat Shmona and Hapoel Tel-Aviv are playing in the qualifying stages of the Europa League.

The committee also decided that because of ongoing political turmoil, Russian and Ukrainian teams will be prevented from facing each other until further notice.

The decision means FC Zenit and Dnipro cannot be drawn together when the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round draw is made today.

    • Says Nigeria has enough reservoir of athletes

Chairman, National Youth Games Organising Committee, Mallam Al-Hassan Yakmut is thrilled with the successes recorded by the Games so far.

The Director of Grassroots Development of the National Sports Commission said that the timely intervention by the Sports Minister, Bolaji Abdullahi and the Director General of the National Sports Commission to organise this competition as a fall out of the Presidential Sports Retreat of 2012 has now recorded pool of talents that would take Nigerian sports by storm in the next four years.

“I would say it has been so far so good in terms of performance of the athletes (that are between 13 and 17) as at today (Tuesday) which is the third day of the competition. Sincerely speaking with the feelers we are getting, this country has been shortchanged for too long as regarded the absence of a well established youth programmes.

“I am using this medium to commend the Honourable Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi and the Director General of the National Sports Commission for their tenacity on the initiatives that led to the First Edition of the National Youth Games. As a result Nigerian youths has been given a technical sports voice through this Games. I am happy that it is an annual event.

“Could you imagine within three days we have been able to conclude six sports? I think it’s an achievement. Although 657 out of 2,937 athletes have been wielded out because of their complications with date of birth and age brackets. Despite this the game has not lost its focus and it has achieved its objectives going by the selected athletes that are already competing. Volleyball, handball, basketball, weightlifting, boxing, taekwondo and squash have been a success story because of the number of talents discovered.

“At the end of the Games we will give Nigerians the statistics of the athletes that have been discovered and what will be done with them”, he told Sportinglife yesterday.
