My partnership with Kwankwaso over, says Ganduje

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje said yesterday that he has no plan to reconcile with his predecessor  Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Ganduje categorically stated that he was not under any obligation to strike a  deal with the Kwankwasiyya faction of the  All Progressives Congress (APC).

At a function in Kano yesterday, the governor said he was completely disillusioned with the unfolding events in quick succession, as well as the level of  mudslinging against his leadership at the time  he mounted the saddle of leadership, as the duly elected governor.

He regretted that his administration has been maligned as well as taken to task without  justification.

Ganduje said: “We have had enough of such a vendetta, which had been raging with no end in sight. We have parted ways with Kwankwasiyya forever, even the red caps we are wearing had started changing its colour.  We  are on the road to shedding the red cap toga because we have realised the fact that we  have ruled out the possibility of compromise.

“They have erroneously believed and telling people that we  are on the road to losing our seat in the 2019 general election. I find such a permutation laughable and a mere ranting of a wounded lion. We will never be moved and shaken by such a crafty conspiracy theory.  All we know is that the electorate will never succumb to such a blackmail.”

The governor added: “We have fulfilled most of the promises we made during the 2015 gubernatorial campaign, knowing that it was a burden we must shoulder.”

He said: “In the last three years, Kano has not recorded any polio outbreak and we want to continue to sustain this record. The government is investing hugely on health. You are aware that the health sector is allocated over 13 per cent of the 2018 budget.

“Just recently, the Dangote Foundation and Bill and Melinda gates Foundation hailed the government for the success recorded so far in the fight against diseases like polio, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, malaria, measles and other child-killer diseases.”

Garba added that the council approved the release of over N22 million to procure two million assorted seedlings to checkmate desertification.

  • Six injured as Kwankwasiyya, Ganduje supporters clash in Kano

About six persons were injured when the Kwankwasiyya group of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Gandujiyar Group clashed yesterday at a wedding in Chiranchi, Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State.

It was learnt Walid Abbas Sunusi (Walidiyya Kwankwaso), the step-brother of Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, was injured. Walid is a staunch supporter of former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

An eyewitness said children of the Commissioner for Special Duties, Sani Abdullahi Abbas and Abbas Abdulahi Abbas (jnr), were among the culprits, adding that the fight was allegedly led by one of the commissioner’s boy, popularly called Shawuya.

The injured were taken to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

A supporter of the Kwankwasiyya group and former Organising Secretary of the APC, Sunusi Surajo Kwankwaso, attributed the situation to the negligence of security agents. According to him, the Commissioner for Special Duties, Abdullahi Abbas, in an online video last week, allegedly confirmed that they orchestrated the attack in Minjibir and Hawan Daushe, and called for the attack of Kwankwasiyya members.

“It’s surprising that Abdullahi Abbas was not arrested or invited by security agents over his comments; calling for violence that was even reported in the media,” Kwankwaso said.

He said the situation may likely inform the decision of residents to protect themselves if the law enforcement agents fail to perform their functions.

Police spokesman Magaji Musa Majia said the investigation has begun and perpetrators will be arrested and prosecuted.

Abdullahi Abbas could not be reached for comments.

  • No apologies backing Buhari’s re-election bid, say Ganduje, Lalong, five other northern govs

No apologies backing Buhari’s re-election bid, say Ganduje, Lalong, five other northern govs

Seven northern governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday reiterated their support for the second term bid of President Muhammadu Buhari, declaring that they had no apologies for doing so.

The governors prayed along with Buhari at the State House Mosque for the Jumat and thereafter had a meeting with him.

As they emerged from the session, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, who spoke for them, said they remained committed to the President’s re-election bid.

“We are politicians, and those of us you see here want the President to contest the 2019 election. We have no apologies for that,” he said.

“We believe in Mr. President. We want him to continue running the country in the right direction.

“People can speculate about 2019, we have no apologies. Whether they are right or wrong is beside the point.

“Everybody is entitled to his own opinion. But as governors, and most of us here with the exception of Yobe Governor are first time governors, we are interested in continuity and stability, and we want the President to continue with that.”

Others governors at the meeting were Abubakar Bello (Niger); Ibrahim Gaidam (Yobe); Yahaya Bello (Kogi); Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano); Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna); Jibrilla Bindow (Adamawa) and Simon Lalong (Plateau).

El-Rufai also spoke on the crisis sparked in his state by his recent mass sack of teachers for failing to measure up to standard.

He said there was no going back on their sack and that the severance pay of the affected teachers was ready for collection.

His words: “There is nothing to step back on. It’s a well thought out position we took one and a half years before we made the decision, and we will not change it.

“We have announced that in line with the public service rule, we will pay three months’ severance pay, and we have provided incentives for those that are retiring to go through the retirement training.

“Those that are interested in farming, we have the reserve land available, and for those that want to go into trade, we have micro credit to support them. If they are not suitable as teachers they can do other things and the government will do other things to support them.”

On the allegation that he asked the police to stop workers marching to Government House on Thursday to protest the alleged sack of about 21,000 teachers in Kaduna State, he said the right to protest was guaranteed in the constitution and that he was not in the state on that day.

He said: “I did not direct the police to stop the workers. I was not even in Kaduna. For me, the right to protest is guaranteed in the constitution, provided you don’t go violent and you don’t violate any laws.

”I think the concern of the police is because the precarious situation in the country, particularly in Kaduna, made it unsuitable to have such protest. And the last time they did such a thing, they attacked the State House of Assembly.

”So this is the concern. The concern is break down of law and order and not protest or strike. They are free to do so, but it will not change our position.”

Also speaking, Governor Ganduje of Kano State said the coming together of the seven governors was a mere coincidence.

He said: ”We are seven in number here, but we came separately, not for any purpose.

“But after the Friday prayers, we decided to say hello to Mr. President.

“It’s just a coincidence that we met in the mosque and some joined us later and we decided to go to greet him.

  • Ganduje, deputy: Crack on the wall

Ganduje, deputy: Crack on the wall

The rift between Kano State Governor Abdullahi  Ganduje and his deputy, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, blew last month during a political programme aired in some of the local radio stations in the state. Abubakar said that he was not prepared to be Ganduje’s running-mate in next year’s governorship elections.

To many, Prof. Hafiz outburst was a huge surprise. In a swift reaction Ganduje expressed shock over his deputy’s pronouncement. However, pundits are of the view that Hafiz decision may not be unconnected with the removal of his brother as the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman for Mandawari ward, his birth place, and the role played by the immediate-past chairman of the party, Prince Abdullahi Abbas, who voluntarily resigned his position. The deputy governor, who was a Deputy Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, he was not interested in joining Ganduje’s re-election bid in 2019, adding that he would go back to the university to continue his academic career.

He was angered over allegedly being sidelined by the Ganduje-led group in the formation of the party structure and the leadership at his ward and local government levels. Hafiz said: “When they were campaigning for election, my picture was juxtaposed with the governor, president and our leader Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. But today at my birthplace, my picture was replaced with somebody else’s picture. What have I done to my birthplace? I do not deserve this even as a university lecturer at Bayero University, where I hope to return in 2019 at the expiration of my tenure. I will not be part of a system whereby the leadership of my party, APC, would be formed at my Mandawari ward, my birthplace, and my brother removed without consulting me. I will never continue in this situation.”

However, in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, who spoke on behalf of  Ganduje, he said the governor was shocked over the outburst and directed the immediate reinstatement of the chairman, while calling on politicians to always contact party leadership and politicians holding higher offices before taking sensitive decision.

Shortly after Hafiz declared his unwillingness to re-contest over 10 people with intimidating credentials have declared interest in his position. Those eyeing Hafiz’s job include two serving Vice Chancellors, one serving in a  university in the state, another one serving outside the state; two members of Kano State Executive Council, Professor of over 15 years,  a retired Permanent Secretary from the Federal Civil service.

A principal member of Kano State House of Assembly confirmed that he has received the calls from top citizens of the state advising him to sponsor an impeachment motion against the embattled Deputy Governor. According to him, “since yesterday when Prof. Hafiz made that pronouncement, I have personally received over 50 phone calls asking me to support his impeachment in the House. In fact when I spoke to some of our members on the issue this morning, they also confirmed receiving such phone calls.

He added: “Though I may not know his reason for making such a declaration, I view it as very unfortunate and a dent to his own image. If he feels he is no longer interested to serve the people, the honourable thing for to do was to quietly resign his from position and allow others who more capable to continue from where he stopped. From what he has said and the manner he said it, he has sent a wrong impression that all is not well between him and the governor which is not true. Everybody here in Kano and within the circle of government is aware that Governor Ganduje has given him free hand to operate. For all I know, he has never been sidelined, so only him can explain his reasons for betraying the mandate of the people.”

As an astute politician and seasoned administrator, who does not want his house consumed by fire, Ganduje hurriedly calmed frayed nerves. On his part, the erstwhile APC chairman,  Prince Abdullahi Abbas, who is the son of Galadiman Kano, resigned his appointment for peace to reign.

Although no reason was given for Abbas’ decision, it was learnt that Ganduje had already nominated him for the position of a Commissioner in his cabinet. Abbas has already been screened by the House of Assembly and confirmed by the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata.

However, pundits have continued to wonder why Hafiz decided to have gone to the media to express his grievances rather than confiding in his boss—Ganduje.  A top APC chieftain in the state who craved anonymity told our Reporter that in this case, there is more than meets eyes.

According to him, “I can see that Prof. Hafiz is playing a script written by somebody. We all are aware that Ganduje trusted him. Apart from being the Deputy Governor, he gave him the juicy portfolio of Commissioner for Education. He has been made chairman of so many important Committees. The Governor would always allow him to act on his behalf. He has never been starved of fund. So, to people like us who know his link and loyalty to former Governor Kwankwaso, we believe Prof. Hafiz is playing the card of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

“We only pray that this drama ends well because at the end of its all, if anything happens, Prof. Hafiz will be the loser. For one thing, he has never been a grounded politician. He was a former Commissioner for Finance during Kwankwaso’s administration and we all are aware of the scandals that trailed that tenure. So, we still respect Prof. Hafiz and we believe he will realise that Governor Ganduje is a peace-loving man who cares for the welfare of all. As far as we are concerned, there is no rift between Ganduje and Prof. Hafiz as being rumoured.”

Ganduje: Kwankwaso is free to visit Kano

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has said that former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso is free to visit the state.

According to him, he would welcome Kwankwaso on his planned visit to the state.

The political associates have been in a strained relationship since the beginning of Ganduje’s administration, and their crisis has affected the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Also, rumours were rife that Kwankwaso would visit the state on January 31. The rumours were greeted with different reactions from the warring party, casting fears that the visit may not augur well in the polity.

But Ganduje, through the Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, said the Kwankwaso is free to visit the state as the government will welcome him.

According to him, the government has, in the past, received high profile politicians and other individuals, and the same treatment would be accorded to Kwankwaso.

Garba, at a news conference to highlight the achievements of Ganduje’s administration, said the governor is known for his generosity and hospitality to visitors.

He explained that being the former deputy governor to Kwankwaso, he would not deprive any politician the opportunity to carry out political activities, provided it is conducted with decorum.

His words: “Rumours are going on that the government of Ganduje will stop Kwankwaso from coming to Kano. This is not true.

“This administration of Ganduje is known for receiving high profile politicians. Everybody is aware of Ganduje’s history of honouring people, irrespective of status.

“We will welcome Kwankwaso. Let him come and conduct his political activities, but what we will not condone is violence. We will not stop any politician from conducting his activities if it is peaceful and honourable.”

    Ganduje reinstates deputy’s brother

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has reinstated brother of Deputy Governor Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, as chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Mandawari ward, his birth place.

Abubakar, in an audio clip, said he was not interested in joining Ganduje’s re-election bid in 2019, adding that he would go back to the university to continue his academic career.

He was said to be angry at being sidelined by the Ganduje-led group in the formation of party structure and leadership at his ward and local government level.

He said: “When they were campaigning for election, my picture was juxtaposed with the governor, president and our leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

But Ganduje, in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, directed the immediate reinstatement of the chairman. He called on politicians to always contact party leadership and politicians holding higher offices before meddling in sensitive issues.

Ganduje also urged politicians and party members to respect the deputy governor in their dealings with him.

He reiterated APC’s commitment to ensure justice and fairness in the selection of credible candidates, and called on members to desist from acts which could cause disunity.
