Supremacy tussles among Yoruba monarchs threatening development — Gani Adams

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba, Iba Gani Adams, has raised concerns over the recurring and rising supremacy tussles among Yoruba monarchs, warning that the growing trend poses a serious threat to the ethnic’s heritage, social cohesion and developmental prospects.

Speaking during 2026 Oodua Festival in front of the palace of Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Adams called for unity among traditional rulers in Yoruba land to prevent external infiltrations.

He lamented the disunity among traditional rulers in Yorubaland, describing the development as ‘ugly.”

He said: “The development threatens the cultural heritage, social cohesion and developmental prospects.”

The Generalissimo of Yoruba land added “The level of disunity is now at an alarming level. I respectfully call on all our traditional rulers to jettison the supremacy battles that are threatening to tear us apart.

“We should unite to prevent external infiltrations. We need our traditional rulers to resume speaking with one voice for the progress of Yorubaland and southwest region, rather than fighting for personal aggrandisement and interests.”

He blamed the ego fight between Yoruba monarchs on political interferences, personal rivalries which undermine the collective strength and influence of the traditional institution.

He urged political establishment, Yoruba elders and leaders to step in and mediate among traditional rulers.

Unity of purpose, stakeholders’ collaboration ‘ll end insecurity in Southwest – Gani Adams, Ogunlewe, others

Unity of purpose and stakeholders’ collaboration can end insecurity and mindless destruction of lives and property, especially in the Southwest, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has said.

He said such unity will eradicate gaps in intelligence gathering and sharing, as well as response time to incidences of insecurity.

“There has been weak coordination among security actors occasioned by poor collaboration between government security agencies, local vigilantes, traditional institutions, and civil society,” he noted.

He called on leaders at all levels, including governors, local governments chairpersons, traditional rulers and community heads, to come together in the quest to decisively put an end to the insecurity challenge.

He made the call at a virtual International Conference, titled, ‘The importance of unity in strengthening security and preventing genocide in Yorubaland,’ organized by Yoruba One Voice (YOV) Worldwide.

“Unity is the bedrock upon which peace and security are built. In Yorubaland, our strength lies in our ability to come together as one people, transcending differences of origin, religion, or language.

“When we unite, we create a formidable force that can effectively safeguard our communities against threats and violence. The principle of unity is such that rallies people for regional cohesion and integration, and foster loyalty to Yorubaland above sectional loyalties,” he said.

Adams commended the southwest governors on the planned security fund, saying that the development was a direct answer to the kind of unity and collaboration he and other stakeholders have been calling for among the governors.

“With joint security fund that has been approved, it will greatly help to raise the huge resources required for the fight against the terrorists.

“Our governors should assist the Yoruba speaking communities in Kogi and Kwara States. They should invite all traditional rulers and community leaders in those areas for a meeting so as to collectively design the best approach to stop the kidnappings and mindless killings of our people.”

Adams stressed that stakeholders cannot afford to allow the terrorists to create immense collateral damage in the southwest region.

“To be sure, about 50 to 60 per cent of national investments and monuments are domiciled in the southwest. If we do not defend the investments, the coming generation would blame us.

“For instance, part of the information I received was that Fulani herders are bent on exterminating the Yoruba people from Kwara State. They also want to do a similar thing to Yoruba speaking people in Kogi State. You will observe that the assailants are not attacking the Igala and Ebira people in Okene,” he added.

On his part, the Parakoyi Aare Ona Kakanfo, Prof Kolawole Raheem, called for collective action against the bandits who he noted were bent on displacing Yoruba people and dispossessing them of their lands and resources.

The guest speaker, Prof. Adetayo Olurotimi Ogunlewe, bemoaned what he described as systematic targeting of Yorubaland given the patterns of attacks, kidnappings and displacement.

He said that, if unaddressed, the situation could escalate into widespread atrocities or genocide against Yoruba communities.

Ogunlewe, who was a former lecturer at Lagos State University (LASU) and also the Secretary, Lagos Literary Society, therefore called on security stakeholders to launch out viciously against the bandits and terrorists with a view to clearing and exterminating them from their hideouts.

Earlier in his welcome address, Secretary General, YOV, Prince Adedokun Ademiluyi, noted that the grim picture of growing insecurity ravaging Yorubaland and South West Nigeria had reached an alarming level that demanded strategic urgent action.

Ademiluyi said it was in recognition of the severity of the challenge and the urgent need to mitigate the violence and general insecurity occasioned by the invasions, that YOV organised the conference.

Another participant in the conference, who is a prominent member of YOV, Iyalode Abike Ade from the United Kingdom (UK), called for increased campaign and advocacy locally and internationally to raise awareness about all actions against Yoruba communities that can encourage and lead to genocide.

She also canvasses for support for grassroots initiatives to strengthen traditional security structures within legal and human-rights-compliant frameworks.

At the end of the conference, some of the recommendations given by participants included the need to establish a Yoruba Security Coordination Framework to create mechanisms for improved cooperation among local vigilantes, state security agencies, traditional rulers, and community networks for more coordinated intelligence-gathering and rapid response; and a need for regular security stakeholder meeting and conference to cross-fertilize ideas on ways to decisively tackle the challenge of insecurity in Yorubaland.

Other recommendations included creating a joint intelligence-sharing system as part of new measures to confront worsening insecurity in the region; and the urgent adoption of community policing to facilitate the deployment of local and community -security networks to address security challenges.

Gani Adams urges southwest governors to harness tourism for economic growth

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba, Iba Gani Adams, has called on southwest governors to leverage tourism as a tool for boosting the region’s economy.

Adams, who also serves as the national coordinator of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), emphasised the need to diversify into eco-tourism, which he said is abundant in the southwest, and criticised Nigeria’s overreliance on crude oil for revenue.

Speaking after the 2025 Osun Osogbo Festival during a programme with OPC members at Laro School, Osogbo, Adams noted that many countries in Europe, Asia, and America already generate substantial income and employment from tourism.

He cited examples, including the UAE’s $45.5 billion tourism revenue in 2022, South Africa’s tourism sector contributing 8.8% to its GDP, and Australia’s $33.23 billion earnings from tourism in the same year.

“Our governors can go into joint ventures to develop the tourism potential in the region. They need to stop relying on the Federal Government for survival. The Osun-Osogbo Festival is not only a celebration but also a call to action to preserve and promote our cultural values and the natural endowments of the southwest,” he said.

“In Ile-Ife, Osun State we have the Oodua Grove, the Oranmiyan Grove, many palaces that are full of history and have been around for hundreds of years. Ile-Ife itself is an historical city.

“In Oyo, the Oyo empire lasted for 640 years. You would hardly find any other empire in the world that lasted for that long. Aside from the historical empire, there are many hills that can also be showcased to tourists. Even the Alaafin of Oyo’s palace can be made a tourism destination if it is well managed.

“Oke Ibadan in Ibadan, Oyo State, Oke Olumo in Ogun State, Oke Idanre, Oke Erinmo, Okota in Arigidi-Akoko all in Ondo State are all very good destinations that can be marketed to the world.

“This is a clarion call to all Ministries of Tourism and Culture across the Southwest States to develop a strategy that we can use to develop all thesesites to global standards and then promote then, especially through festivals such as the one we are gathered for here today”, he added.

Court dismisses Gani Adams’ N5bn defamation suit against Igboho

An Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan on Thursday dismissed a N5 billion defamation suit filed by the Aareonakakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adams, against Yoruba nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.

Justice O.T. Ademola-Salami, who presided over Court 15, not only dismissed the suit but also awarded a cost of N500,000 against Adams in favour of Igboho.

The suit, marked M/1006/2004, was filed by Adams through his counsel, Sikiru Akinrele, seeking the enforcement of his fundamental rights.

Adams alleged that Igboho unlawfully recorded a private telephone conversation without his consent and published defamatory content, which he said violated his right to privacy under Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). He demanded N5 billion in damages.

Among other reliefs, Adams sought a declaration that the alleged secret recording and subsequent publication of his private phone conversation were unlawful, illegal, and unconstitutional.

When the matter came up on April 30, 2025, Akinrele urged the court to uphold his client’s claims. However, Igboho’s counsel, Mr. Junaid Sanusi, opposed the application and filed a counter-affidavit and written address, which were adopted in court.

Sanusi argued that the suit was fundamentally flawed because Adams did not personally depose to the affidavit, nor did the third-party deponent explain why Adams could not do so himself — a requirement under the law.

Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice Ademola-Salami upheld the objections raised by Igboho’s counsel, ruling that the affidavit in support of Adams’ claims was defective and thus inadmissible.

The court also noted that Adams failed to provide sufficient evidence proving that Igboho tapped or recorded his telephone conversations.

With no legal representation present for Adams at the proceeding, the judge dismissed the suit and awarded N500,000 in costs to Sunday Igboho.

Only decentralised security system can stop Benue killings- Gani Adams

The only way the Federal Government can stop the recurrence of the recent killings in Benue State is to decentralize the security architecture of the country, the Aare One Kakanfo of Yoruba, Iba Gani Adams has said.

In a statement issued on Friday, Adams said that no amount of prayers would save us from the unnecessary embarrassment of insecurity if the security system is not decentralised.

Adams also noted that the state of insecurity in the country is the reason most developed nations ”would keep advising their citizens against coming to Nigeria or investing. This would keep affecting our image and economy negatively.”

He said: ”The time for a decentralized security system that would allow for federal, state and local government police, is now. This is the only way to stop such mindless killings going on in Benue, and other such places where lives are taken out mindlessly by non-state actors and other marauders.

”The fresh spate of killings and violent attacks in Benue State, which has resulted in the loss of hundreds of innocent lives, destruction of property, displacement of communities and widespread fear among the populace, are highly condemnable.

”The recurring killings and massacres in Benue State, as part of the broader violence in the region, including Plateau State, stem from a complex interplay of root causes.

”While the specific incidents vary, the underlying factors contributing to the Benue massacre and ongoing conflicts generally include the following: Fulani herders and communal clashes, Weak Security and Law Enforcement, Proliferation of Arms and Armed Groups, Political and Governance Challenges, and socioeconomic factors such as poverty and unemployment. The recurring killings represent a grave security challenge that continues to undermine peace, stability, and development in this region.

The persistent nature of the killings not only violates the fundamental right to life guaranteed under Section 33 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), but also threatens the social fabric and economic wellbeing of the affected communities. It is also a threat to the peace, security, and unity of our nation.

The violence disrupts agricultural activities, which are the mainstay of the local economies, thereby exacerbating poverty and food insecurity.

The recurring killings have now gotten to a stage that demand sustained and multifaceted responses from the Federal Government to restore peace, protect citizens, and promote reconciliation and development in the troubled areas.

Only true federalism can resolve Nigeria’s problems- Adams, Falana, others

True federalism is the only solution to the development challenges confronting Nigeria, activists including the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba, Chief Gani Adams, constitutional lawyer, Chief Femi Falana and Joe Okei-Odumakin have said.

The activists made the remarks during a lecture to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election on Thursday, organized by the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC).

The theme of this year’s event was ‘June 12 as a Catalyst for National Development: True Federalism and Nigerian’s Integration.’

In his welcome address, Adams, who is also the National Coordinator of OPC       identified four critical sectors in need of urgent restructuring in the polity as judiciary, economy, security and political.

He observed that though changing a country was not a task for the lily-livered, Nigerians had a record of not succumbing to machinations of ‘enemies of the society’.

Adams said: “Without judicial reforms, how will the political class behave? Many of us witnessed judicial rulings coming out before the June 12, 1993 election and even after General Ibrahim Babangida annulled the freest and fairest election on June 23, 1993. We also remember rulings from some judges.

“But, 32 years after those rulings by these judges who were obviously compromised, are our current judges any better? Are judgements oozing out of courts these days not becoming a complete embarrassment to average Nigerians?” he queried.

Gani Adams urges FG to tackle insecurity in Benue, Plateau, Ondo

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, Iba Gani Adams, has called on the Nigerian government under President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the worsening security situation in Benue, Plateau, and Ondo states.

Speaking at the grand finale of the 2025 Eledumare Festival in Lagos, Adams condemned the recent spate of killings and kidnappings allegedly perpetrated by armed herders in the affected states.

He warned that continued inaction from the federal government would further threaten national stability and economic prospects.

“These insecurity issues go a long way to affect food security, given the important role Benue, Plateau, and Ondo states play in the food production cycle of the nation,” Adams said. “The crisis also gives a sense of instability and discourages foreign investors.”

Adams stressed the urgency of the situation, urging the Federal Government to prioritise the protection of citizens over political interests.

“The government at the centre cannot continue to turn a blind eye to these necessary demands. The time to act is now. We must act decisively in the interest of our people,” he added.

His remarks come amid rising violence across the country. In Benue State, Governor Hyacinth Alia revealed that at least 598 people have been killed in recent attacks. In Plateau, over 100 lives have been lost in Bokkos and Bassa LGAs, prompting protests led by the Christian Association of Nigeria. Ondo State has also witnessed tragedy, with gunmen killing over 20 farmers in Akure North LGA.

Adams’ comments add to growing public pressure on the Federal Government to restore peace and security across the country.

Don’t cause rift between our foremost monarchs, Gani Adams cautions bloggers

The Aareonakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has appealed to bloggers, content creators, and social media users not to publish content that is capable of creating disunity among traditional rulers and the respected traditional institutions in the region.

Apparently reacting to social media frenzy on seniority between two foremost Yoruba traditional rulers, the Alaafin of Oyo and the Ooni of Ife, the Yoruba generalissimo said bloggers must enaure adequate measures in their reportage while also excersing caution in developing content for their various platforms, without heating up the polity.

He spoke in an address at the Oke ‘Badan Festival 2025, held at the Mapo Hall, Ibadan, Oyo State capital city.

Adams, who is the Chief Promoter, Olokun Festival Foundation and Convener, Oodua Progressive Union Worldwide, noted that he has watched with dismay what he described as ‘unnecessary comparison’ between the Alaafin of Oyo’s stool and that of the Ooni of Ife, with respect to which one is senior to the other.

He said, “I have watched with dismay the recent unnecessary comparison being drawn between the Alaafin of Oyo’s stool and that of the Ooni of Ife, with respect to which one is senior to the other by bloggers and some online media platforms.

“Let me reiterate that both traditional stools and the revered royal imperial majesties occupying them are two main prominent Obas in Yorubaland and globally.

“I especially appeal to bloggers across the region and in the country not to publish content that is capable of creating disunity among our traditional rulers and the respected traditional institutions.

“I plead with you all to be measured in your reportage and be cautious in developing content for your various platforms, without heating up the polity.”

Speaking on the importance of the festival, Adams said “The Oke-Ibadan festival is a yearly celebration that honours the founding of Ibadan, the Aboke and the people of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.

“It is a cultural and traditional festival where the Ibadan people pay respect to their ancestors, reiterate their cultural values, and promote unity.

“The name ‘Oke-Ibadan’ translates to ‘Hill of Ibadan,’ referring to the original settlement site on a hill where the city was formed in the 18th century. Though there are various accounts of the origin of ‘Oke Ibadan’ but there is a common agreement with the resolution that Lagelu: Oro Apata-Maja, who was the founder of Ibadan, was the one who established the Oke Ibadan festival.

“The Oke-Ibadan festival serves as a reminder of the historical antecedents of Ibadan people and the legacy of their founders. The festival involves honouring the goddess of the hill and acknowledging the role of the founding fathers of Ibadan.

“Oke Ibadan is a very formidable rock, a highly historical rock to the Ibadan people, and it played a lot of roles when Ibadan was going to different wars in the olden days. Ibadan people refer to the rock as a giver of children, wealth, and so many good things.”

He enjoined the Oyo state government implore to do everything within its power to make the rock a tourist destination, by giving awareness about its importance.

He urged the state Ministry of Culture and Tourism to ensure that the rock is reflected as one of the rocks with immense tourist potential in Yorubaland, just like Olumo Rock in Abeokuta, Oke Idanre in Ondo, Oke Erinmo in Ilesa, Oke Asabari in Saki, Oke Iyake in Ado-Awaye, Oke Agelu in Oyo State, and many other rocks across the region, which he said clerics have now turned into spiritual destinations.

In his lecture at the event, the guest lecturer, Ambassador. Afolabi Olaniyi, speaking on the topic: “Adequate security, a tool for development”, urged the Federal Government to recruit the services of more security operatives, noting that the protection of life and property is the primary duty of any government.

He also called for the establishment of Police University across the six geo political zones, saying, “You need to know the population of the country in order to organize for adequate security. Now Nigeria is said to be having over two hundred million citizens with about five hundred thousand police officers.

“With this figure, you will see that we don’t have enough police officers to protect us because out of five hundred thousand, commercial banks and important personalities will also take security operatives for their operations. Nigeria needs at least five million police officers.

“Let me use this opportunity to ask Federal Government to recruit more police officers. Also we need Police University across the six geo political zones.”

The event was attended by traditional rulers, community leaders, among other participants.
