“It is a task I could shoulder with my aides but I want the prospective beneficiary members of your associations to see these things as coming through you as their reliable and serviceable representatives. We have done it for other artisans in good spirit. And I dare say that with God behind us, this is just the beginning,” Solomon said.

    Ganiyu Solomon declares for governor

THE Minority Whip of the Senate, Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon, has declared his ambition to run for governor of Lagos State next year.

He reeled out his programmes for the people yesterday at the declaration, which took place at Ikorodu Town Hall in Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos State.

The senator was subsequently adopted by the traditional chiefs and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the local government.

The declaration coincides with the inauguration of Solomon‘s campaign office in the town, where members and supporters of APC gathered in their thousands to express their support for the senator in his “unwavering commitment and drive to take Lagos to the next level.”

Solomon said he offered to serve the people of Lagos due to its status as the economic capital of the nation, saying it needs “constant improvement and regeneration of infrastructural facilities and the people deserve the best possible.”

He analysed how his party has “changed the face of Lagos and improved the quality of lives of the people” since the inception of the democratic dispensation in 1999.

The aspirant praised the former Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the incumbent Governor, Raji Fashola, for taking the state to greater heights “that left no one in doubt that Lagos is a reference-point in good governance.”

Reeling out what he has in the offing for Lagosians, Solomon, who sponsored bills on amendment of the National Directorate of Employment Act, Electronic Commerce, Whistleblowers Protection, Institute of Capital Market Registrars and Elderly Persons Centre, as well as sponsored and co-sponsored many other motions, said he would lead a government that will ensure improved security of life and property.

“I will assemble a formidable team that will not only adequately maintain existing infrastructure, but provide new ones. Lagosians will enjoy more road and sea infrastructure, hospitals, schools and renewal of the environment.

“I promise to reduce poverty, create new jobs and youth development programmes. I promise support for the organised private sector; I promise to accord the traditional institution, the elderly and vulnerable citizens of our state due recognition and support.

“I intend to run a transparent and corruption-free government that will give all stakeholders: civil servants, public servants and residents of Lagos their dues and make everyone happy,” he said.

‘He ‘ll live in our memories’

The lawmaker representing Lagos West in the Senate, Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon, has said the brand of journalism practised by the late Vice-Chairman of the Sun Publishing Ltd, Mr. Dimgba Igwe, was such that would make him live long in the memories of people.

Solomon, a governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State and the Minority Whip, in a statement by his campaign office yesterday, expressed shock on the death of Igwe, who he described as “an exemplary journalism icon, who would not mince words in communicating facts and standing by the truth through his educative and informative weekly column.”

The grassroots politician said: “I was out of the country when the news of Igwe’s death hit me. I was devastated because I have always taken him as one of the few journalists, who have used their professional callings to raise the hope of and inspire the downtrodden in a society where the masses hardly matter. I had not option but to return home to join millions of grieving Nigerians to mourn an icon of the pen profession.

“I can only urge the late Igwe’s immediate and extended families as well as the Sun Newspapers family to seek solace in the great name and the legacy left behind by the foremost journalist. He has run a good race and given a good account of himself. He will for long live in our memories while we continue to miss his candid stand for truth on national issues.

“My condolence also goes to an enigma and publisher of the Sun newspapers, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, who has lost a good support, brother and friend in Dimgba Igwe. I ask the Almighty God to console him and everyone in grief at this critical time.”

    Teaching them how to fish

Senate Minority Whip Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon has empowered some youths to set up their own businesses. His gesture, says Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman Chief Henry Ajomale, is a reminder of the nation’s empowerment crisis. Assistant Editor DADA ALADELOKUN reports.

The event started on a convivial note. But, suddenly,  there was silence. The speaker’s voice quaked, as listeners nodded their heads. Chief Henry Ajomale, Interim Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, held the microphone, analysing  what remains a pain in the hearts of many Nigerians.

He struggled to contain his emotions as he bemoaned the fate of the 19 job seekers who died last month  during the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).

The Blue-Roof, popular events rendezvous on the sprawling LTV premises in Alausa, Ikeja, was filled. It was a moment for “the lucky ones” – numbering about 800 – who were being empowered with multi-million-naira equipment. The posture was a follow-up to their two-week training in various vocations, to teach them “how to fish.”

The event was sponsored by Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon  the Minority Whip of the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly, representing Lagos West District. He was supported by the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports.

Exuding excitement, the youth donned branded T-shirts. With hearty praise-songs for their benefactor, they filled the roomy hall to capacity as early as 9 am, looking into the future with an air of assurance. At some locations in the hall was a spectacle: Loads of the expensive equipment that were later given to them with take-off grants.

Before Ajomale spoke, Solomon had told the gathering why he took the bold step to rescue the beneficiaries from the brink of despondency with the training that ended on February 25.

“With the various skills acquired by the youth, they need not continue to worry their heads over the white-collar jobs that are not there. Besides the equipment, we are also giving them some stipends in bank drafts to help them start off without ado,” Solomon said, urging them to be serious in their vocations.

Sobriety gripped the gathering when he lamented the terror of joblessness in the country, especially among able-bodied youths. An unpleasant noise swept through the crowd in response to Solomon’s outburst on the ill-fated “NIS 19.” Sighs of agony and frustration shook the gathering. After a one-minute silence demanded by the senator for the repose of the late job seekers’ souls, he sought more commitment from the government and other stakeholders in the fight against unemployment, which he warned, was becoming a major threat to lives and property in the land.

Everyone rose in earth-shaking ovation for the lawmaker. APC chieftain Cardinal James Odunmbaku (Baba Eto); Mr Wale Raji, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, who represented Governor Babatunde Fashola; Mrs Risikat Akiyode, who stood in for Fashola’s deputy, Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire; another APC leader, Bashorun Tajudeen Jaiyesimi; officials of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, among other dignitaries, were not left out.

Ajomale was effusive in Solomon’s praise for his thoughtful generosity, especially towards the beneficiaries. Urging them to make good use of the gesture, the politician said: “If you teach a person how to fish rather than giving him fish, you are eradicating poverty in his life. This is what our senator is doing and the Federal Government must imbibe it.”

Fashola had kind words for the senator, saying of the empowerment: “This is a timely intervention in view of the rate of unemployment in the country today.” Orelope-Adefulire also lauded Solomon’s passion for the development of youths and women, adding: “This is a gesture that will complement government’s poverty-reduction efforts and socio-economic rebirth. This will certainly reduce crime rate.”

The Coordinator, New Renewal Group (NRG), an influential political body in APC, Mr Abiodun Musa, stormed the LTV premises with one of his group’s branded vehicles – loaded with various souvenirs. “This man (Solomon) is not only an asset to his district; he has proved a treasure to our party by exemplifying what it stands for – compassion for the less-privileged. Giving is his life; it is one virtue that all of us, including you, must imbibe,” he told a group of some beneficiaries.

Pleasant surprise was bold on the faces of the youth when Solomon and the dignitaries stepped out to present the equipment, certificates and the grants to them. On their lips was the tacit exclamation: “So, this can be true!”

Mojeed Afiz, who learned barbing, got kits to start off; Abayomi Agbelega and Olamide Faniran smiled home with bench grinders; Jude Okoro, dish installation equipment, Halimat Adeleke, shoe-making machine, among others.

A graduate of Sociology from the Lagos State University (LASU), Ibrahim Adisa, could not contain his joy. He was trained in barbing after his futile effort at securing a white-collar job. “I’m from Alimosho. Youths are the leaders of tomorrow but our government has not proved it to us. I believe posterity will remember the senator for this gesture. I know that soon, I will become an employer of labour,” he said.

Rashidat Adigun, a graduate of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), was trained in Make-up and Gele. She was happy that the senator fed them during the training and then gave N1,000 each daily for fare. praying for the lawmaker, she said: “I had looked for an opportunity to learn the vocation in many places, but they kept demanding about N100,000 from me, which I couldn’t afford. I thank God that GOS has done it for free.”

Indeed, it was an outing that was generally adjudged a model in the concerted efforts to bail the nation out of the woods by building the economic base of the citizenry.

    Senator Solomon opens campaign office

Lagos State governorship aspirant, Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon (Lagos West) yesterday opened  his campaign headquarters at Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ikeja.
Solomon described  the opening of the office as an expression of his presence in the state capital even though he has not officially declared his ambition.
He said his aspiration to become governor of Lagos State was long-standing. “It is not new. I was in the race in 2006. Nobody prompted me to seek the governorship ticket of our great party, All Progressives Congress (APC). I have passion for it”.
Asked what programmes he would implement if elected, he said: “We are here today to express our presence at the state capital. When the time comes, we shall unfold our programmes and how we intend to implement them”. We are prepared for the job, he remarked.
He told his supporters that APC is a party of democrats where internal democracy prevails. According to him, the position of the party is that candidates for elective offices shall emerge through primaries. He made reference to Anambra State where the party’s governorship candidate for the last year’s gubernatorial election was decided through direct primaries. Even in Ekiti and Osun where there are sole candidacy of Governors Kayode Fayemi and Rauf Aregbesola , they  still went through primaries, he said.
The APC, he said, had done primaries in three states. There will be primaries in all states including Lagos State. What applies to governorship ticket will apply to other elective offices. Party members would pick candidates of their choice.
“This time around, members would pick their candidates, they would exercise their rights, internal democracy would be at work. That is what APC stands for. This is our time. If we deny ourselves the opportunity, we shall have ourselves to be blamed.
Against the insinuation that the Lagos State governorship has been zoned to a particular division , Solmon said the APC constitution does not allow zoning.
He said we should not allow imposition of candidates. Those that didn’t work for the party should not come and reap what they didn’t work for.
“If you want to be a politician, you should put your profession aside and face politics. Our leader Senator Bola Tinubu was an accountant by profession but when he decided to serve people, he resigned his plum job and joined politics in 1992 and has since remained in active politics.”
Present on the occasion are Hon Toyin Aina, Mr Emmanuel Bamigboye,  Alhaji Musibau Alebiosu, Bashorun Taju Jaiyesinmi, Oba Babatunde Ogunronbi, and Oba Samuel Alamu.
