Buhari saved Aso Rock from being taken over by Boko Haram – Garba Shehu

But for President Muhammadu Buhari’s election in 2015, Boko Haram insurgents might have taken over the Presidential Villa in Aso Rock.

The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu has said that President Muhammadu Buhari stated this during an interactive session with Nigeria students and youths organized by the Citizen Support for Good Governmence in Nigeria (CSGGN) in Abuja at the weekend.

“Look at all the efforts that have been put in rolling back Boko Haram. There are many people who believe that if not for president Buhari, and if PDP had continued to rule this country in 2015, Boko Haram would have taken over Aso Rock by now. ”

Shehu said President Buhari was not interested in building a legacy that will disappear within a short period or attract newspaper headlines, but wants to build a country that will stand the test of time.

According to him, Buhari is working hard to restructure the Country and reposition the economy for better.

Describing the President as a long distant runner, Shehu said Nigerians misunderstand the real intentions of the President, adding that no nation has ever developed when it rely solely on importation of all its needs.

” We have achieved so much in terms of security. On the war against corruption people are stealing money, huge amounts of money, the kind of money that they don’t need, what do you need that kind of money for?,” Shehu said.

  • Buhari is home sick – Presidency

Buhari is home sick – Presidency

The Presidency has alerted Nigerians on the possible return of President Muhammadu Buhari from London any moment from  Tuesday as he is no longer “enjoying his stay outside the country.”

The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Garba Shehu,  made this known in Abuja on Tuesday.

Buhari, who proceeded on vacation to United Kingdom on January 19 for a routine medical check as indicated in a letter to the Senate, transmitted another letter to the Senate, on February 5, requesting extension of time to complete the medical check-up.

However, the presidential aide said the President would be returning to Nigeria soonest as he was no longer “comfortable” with the extended vacation in London.

“As a matter of fact, we should be getting ready to see the President in fresh and that will be soon as possible.

“The President (himself) is looking to being home to be with his people.

“I don’t think he is enjoying any longer with an extended vacation outside the country.’’

On the President’s telephone conversation with United States President, Donald Trump, Shehu described as “undiplomatic’’ the request being made in some quarters for the release of the audio containing the conversation.

According to him, releasing an audio containing telephone conversation between two presidents is highly unethical and against modern day civilization.

“No, I don’t think so; I don’t think it is permitted in international diplomacy. I think if we had recorded Mr. Trump in this conversation it would have offended our diplomatic relations.

“I think the Americans themselves would not have recorded this conversation of president to president,’’ he said.

On the President’s test results being expected from his doctors, Shehu said he had no information on whether the President had collected the results or not.

He said: “No, we have no information on that (test results). If he had received them, he would have been on the plane back home.’’

  • Buhari: APC diaspora condemns death rumour

    • Charges presidential media team on information management

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Scandinavia chapter, Ayoola Lawal, has called on villain individuals to stop peddling and spreading ill rumours of the death of President Muhammadu Buhari, who is on vacation in the United Kingdom contrary to death rumour.

According to him, apart from the President’s age and the demand for his office, a routine check-up and break from work is an ideal habit to allow for refuelling of the body and soul.

The APC Chief spoke with journalists in Ifako Ijaiye, Lagos, Nigeria after his courtesy visit to the newly elected Federal House of Representative member representing Ifako Ijaiye/ Ojokoro constituency, Hon. Akinwunmi Nurudeen.

Recall that Hon Nurudeen was elected after the untimely death of late Hon. Adewale Elijah Oluwatayo.

Further speaking about the rumour of Buhari’s death, Lawal observed that the President needs all the supports and prayers for his administration to deliver on the electoral promises rather than wishing him death.

“It is naturally absurd to me reading the rumour about the death of an individual. I tend to think that those selling that news never thought of the families and the loved ones of those they are spreading their fake death news.

“Sometimes, reading about our own obituary could serve as a wake-up call, in terms of our story in other people’s life, though, and late Alfred Nobel was a typical example.

“However, I implore all and sundry to get the fact right before spreading information especially in this new age of social media. President Buhari and his team need and deserve our supports and prayers for his tenure to make meaning to Nigeria and Nigerians,” he said.

The APC chief further advised the Presidential media team on effective information management, especially as concerning the President, on who is everyone’s attention.

Lawal observed: “To be candid, President Buhari is the first leader in Nigeria to officially embrace the New Media as a crucial part of the media team. It is, therefore, uncalled for if both the digital media specialists and the conventional publicity and media advisers fail to adequately manage the information about the President to the point where rumour was almost causing chaos in the country.

“Malam Garba Shehu, Mr Femi Adesina, Tolu Ogunlesi and everyone on the media team may need to wake up to the challenges and avoid such information mismanagement in the future. There are ways to keep the enemy of progress mute, but if the bearer of truth keeps quiet then falsehood may be accepted for truth instead. I cannot teach them their jobs because I believe the President chose them wisely.

“May God grant Mr President a speedy recovery and long life in great health. Long live Nigeria. Long live President Buhari. Long live APC.”

  • PDP knocks Presidency over comments on Kaduna killings

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned in totality the statement credited to the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, saying the killings in Southern Kaduna were partly the fault of the PDP because it is the only Senatorial District in the North West with PDP senator.

Shehu spoke during a live programme on Channels Television Monday.

In a reaction by the PDP spokesman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the party described the statement as sad, baffling and shameful.

The statement said, “We are baffled that such a callous, irresponsible and insensitive statement could come from a person who speaks for the President of Nigeria.

“This shows the extent to which every issue in the country today is viewed from the APC’s and the Presidency’s extremely narrow and jaundiced partisan political prism.

“Is Garba Shehu inferring that the hapless people of southern Kaduna were singled out for genocide because they elected a PDP senator?

“Or that the people invited such mindless violence upon themselves by choosing to be different in a sea of APC domination?

“Or is the Southern Kaduna massacre really an action to teach the people a bitter lesson for voting PDP and not APC? It is really unimaginable that any reasonable person can make such a reckless statement.

“One really wonders when the APC would finally accept responsibility for its incompetence and maladministration and end the blame game.

“They have spent the last two years doing nothing but blame the PDP for their woes. They will from all indications, spend the next two years doing the same.”

  • Kyari didn’t use High Commission’s funds for UK treatment – Presidency

Kyari didn’t use High Commission’s funds for UK treatment – Presidency

The Presidency on Monday explained that the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, did not use the funds of the Nigeria High Commission in the United Kingdom to pay his medical bills in the European nation.

A statement issued by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu said the allegations contained in a report published by an online news medium, are totally incorrect, misleading and total fabrication.

He said: “The Nigeria High Commission in London did not at any time ever settle the medical bills or any other bills for that matter as Abba Kyari personally took responsibility for paying his own bills. This is by the Chief of Staff’s choice.

“He pays for his medicals, his taxi and accommodation in the UK despite the high office he occupies, even when there is no rule that says he cannot be catered for by government.

“For the records, Kyari was rushed out of Nigeria for an emergency medical treatment on the fateful day of December 1, 2016. To receive him on arrival, the Wellington Hospital needed to have cash deposited, or in the absence of this, a letter of guarantee.

“In order to meet this condition, the Nigeria High Commission in London wrote the Letter of Guarantee to the hospital for treatment to commence. The role of the High Commission didn’t involve financial commitments on behalf of Kyari.

“The Letter of Guarantee from the High Commission was meant to meet the routine requirements of the Wellington Hospital since the patient in question (Kyari) didn’t possess the UK National Health Insurance.”

Apart from senior government officials, he said other reputable Nigerians are issued with such guarantee letters to hospitals.

“A guarantor is not liable unless there is a default, but this wasn’t the case with Abba Kyari who paid all his medical bills by himself as he had done on previous occasions.

“Hospital records are available for verification to show that the Nigeria High Commission in London didn’t spend a penny on Kyari, as its involvement didn’t go beyond the issuance of the letter of guarantee to the Wellington Hospital,” Shehu added.

  • FG saves N200bn from ‘ghost workers’ in 2016

The Presidency on Tuesday said the Federal government has saved N200 billion by eliminating 50,000 ghost workers from its payroll in 2016.

A total of N13 billion has been taken off the payroll monthly from February to December this year.

Speaking with State House correspondents on Tuesday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said 11 persons championing the syndicate of ghost workers have been handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

He said: “The flagship program of the Muhammadu Buhari administration to rid the system of fraud and instill good governance is on course. Through a notable initiative, the Efficiency Unit of the Federal Ministry of Finance, the government has embarked on the continuous auditing of the salaries and wages of government departments.

“When the Committee was constituted in February 2016, federal government monthly salary bill was N151 billion excluding pensions. Now the monthly salary warrant is N138 billion, excluding pensions. Which means that the government is making a monthly saving of about N13 billion. That is from February 2016 to date.

“The pension bill was 15.5billion monthly as at February. Now it is down to N14.4 billion, which means average monthly saving is about N1.1 billion.”

Buhari orders probe of allegations against govt officials

The Presidency on Sunday night disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered investigation of corruption allegations leveled against some top officials of his administration.

There are recent corrupt allegations against the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Presidency also insisted that the President will fight corruption in the country relentlessly.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

The statement reads: “The attention of the presidency has been drawn to a number of reports in the media, in which various accusations of corruption have been levelled against some top officials in the administration.

“In that regard, President Buhari has instructed the Attorney General of the Federation to investigate the involvement of any top government officials accused of any wrong-doing. If any of them are liable they will not escape prosecution.”

  • Zahra Buhari’s Wedding: Govt not paying for food, other expenses – Shehu

Zahra Buhari’s Wedding: Govt not paying for food, other expenses – Shehu

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the Federal Government has no business funding the wedding ceremony of his daughter, Zahra Muhammadu Buhari, slated for Dec. 16, in Abuja.

The president’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, stated this in his facebook page on Thursday.

Shehu maintained that all the wedding expenses including the printing and distribution of invitation cards, souvenirs, lunch event for the men and dinner for the women as well as other miscellaneous expenses would be financed by the family and personal aides.

According to him, the president has said that even though the family wants to make Zahra happy on her wedding day, she will not enjoy “royal wedding’’ treatments.

He said: “Zahra Muhammadu Buhari’s wedding to Ahmed Mohammed Indimi starting today is a celebrity event to savor any day. Much as the family wants to make their daughter happy they, however, will not make it a royal wedding.

“The President’s family is trying hard to keep it as simple as possible. Wedding Lalle, Fatiha, lunch event for the men and dinner for the women who must have come from far and near and the bride heads to her husband!

“In a twist from what was a norm among past leaders, the President asked to be given the bill for the food at the banquet. Government, he said, has no business paying for that.

“This should be treated as private. His family and personal aides put the money together to foot the bill. No government money in invitation cards, souvenirs or Aso-Ebi. That’s essential Buhari for you!!’’.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Wedding Fatiha will be conducted at the National Mosque, Abuja, on Friday, while reception for guest will be held at the Presidential Banquet hall. (NAN)

  • The elite should stop insisting on old ways of doing things – Buhari

The elite should stop insisting on old ways of doing things – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday called on the Nigerian elite to stop insisting that things should be done the ‘old way’, which have impoverished the nation over the years.

He made the call while speaking at a meeting with a group of Nigerians in the Diaspora, on the margins of the 3rd Dakar International Forum on Peace and Security in Africa in Dakar, Senegal.

According to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President also said his administration is on the right track to improve the image of the country by entrenching accountability and probity in governance.

He told the 11-man Nigerian delegation of association leaders resident in Senegal and Cote D’ Ivoire, that the last 16 years of poor handling of the nation’s resources and infrastructure have continued to impact negatively on the country.

He said: “This administration is pleased we won the election, we are pleased Nigerians are cooperating with us. But the problems are so enormous that we need the cooperation of Nigerians, particularly the elite.

“They (elite) should reflect on the condition of the country, and stop making expensive demands because things cannot be done the old way,’’ he said.

On the welfare of Nigerians in the Diaspora, the President assured them that the Federal Government will continue to promote good neighborliness and improve the negative perception about Nigerians abroad.

“Nigerians are known for their competitiveness and I am very passionate about Nigeria. I will continue to preach good neighborliness and work hard to improve the numerous human and material resources in the country,’’ he stated.

In his remarks, the President of the Nigerian community, Cote D’ Ivoire, Alhaji Adebayo Yahaya, commended the President for his bold and unflinching fight against corruption.

“Nigerians are praying for your success, don’t relent, do not lose hope, the almighty God is behind you,” he said.

Also speaking, the President of the Nigerian community, Senegal, Mr Osas Edigin, told the President that Nigerians in the country have enjoyed excellent relationship with their hosts.

  • ‘Ghost projects awarded under Jonathan’

    ‘Ghost projects awarded under Jonathan’

The Presidency has disclosed that a number of deceitful and ghost projects were awarded under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Many of the projects were said to be merely on paper and no payment was made for their start-up.

The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, revealed these in an interview program on Express Radio in Kano on Tuesday.

Noting that a number of projects existed on paper are now being activated, he cited the Kano-Katsina dual road project as an example of what he called “deceitful and ghost projects now being given life.”

“Kano-Katsina dual highway was awarded three years ago by the last administration. They didn’t pay a kobo for its start-up. President Buhari just paid money for the first tranche of 75 kilometres and work has begun apace.” He stated

He said that Nigeria is taking a giant leap in infrastructure development by speeding up ongoing projects and investing heavily in the construction and  repair of highways, railways and power generating plants across the country.

The Buhari administration, he said, had chosen to fast-track projects related to infrastructure in order to pump money into the economy as a way of pulling the economy out of recession.

To this end, he said that an unprecedented amount of N750 Billion Naira has been released for capital projects in the last five months and that counterpart funds for the take-off of the USD 11 billion Kano-Lagos rail project had been paid.

He described the essence of infrastructure in the country’s economic as an equivalent of the arteries forming the bloodstream in the body.

“Without infrastructure, the country will not witness growth,” he noted.

On the resurgence of militancy and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta region, Malam Garba appealed to militants to maintain peace in the region as the President seeks a permanent solution to the problems that are worrisome to every citizen.

“We must  keep national interest above all else and give priority to eschewing violence and destruction,” he urged.

The Presidential spokesman expressed regrets that despite its good faith in pursuing dialogue with the Niger Delta stakeholders, the militant groups have not reciprocated the government’s good gesture in finding the peaceful and lasting solution to the crisis in the oil-producing areas of Nigeria.

“Despite the government’s practical demonstration of goodwill by bringing the parties or stakeholders to the round table, the militant groups have continued to blow up national economic assets.”

According to Malam Garba, the continued destruction of oil installations, including those repaired, has thrown a spanner in the works, causing enormous hardships on innocent Nigerians on account of declining oil production output and massive losses of revenues, which in turn, badly affect the ability of governments at all levels to meet their basic obligations, including payment of salaries.

While cautioning that violence brings no benefits to anybody, he appealed to Niger Delta leaders at all levels to exert every influence they have to stop the violence and economic sabotage “so that normalcy returns to the region.”
