    • WAFU B U-17 Bronze  medallists return from Accra

Golden Eaglets head coach, Manu Garba,  has predicted  brighter future  for his wards  despite  failing to  defend  the WAFU B  U-17  title in Accra where  Nigeria beat hosts  Ghana  3-2 in the bronze-medal match on Tuesday.

The  Garba-led side  turned on the style with two successive victories over  Niger and Togo  after  their opening draw against Burkina Faso  to cruise into the  decisive sem-final  but were undone  by  the baby Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire who ran away with a 1-0 victory.

At the tournament, the likes of captain Simon Karshe Cletus who twice  earned  Man of the Match awards , John Ogwuche,  striker Rapha Adams and Abdulmuiz Adeleke, who got a brace in the Eaglets’ 3-0 defeat of Togo as well as the  winner  in the 3-2 defeat of Ghana  in the third place classification match.

Though the Golden Eaglets failed to  qualify for next year’s CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, Garba  believes  many of the youngsters he took to Ghana  would fulfil  their potentialities  by working hard  and staying humble.

“Because of the short period to prepare for a major tournament, the team did well and gave its best on and off the pitch; they are worthy ambassadors of Nigeria,” Garba told NationSports even as he predicted a brighter future for his wards. “Almost half of the team are likely going to make it to the next level should they work hard and be disciplined.”

Meanwhile, the Golden Eaglets’ contingent  to the WAFU B Championship in Accra  returned to the country  yesterday via the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos  while  those heading to Abuja  and other places connected  via flight and land transportation.

WAFU B U-17 Tourney: Garba to ginger Eaglets for bronze medal  finish

Golden Eaglets coach Manu Garba said his wards will do everything possible to ensure victory in tomorrow’s bronze medal match against hosts Ghana at the WAFU B U17 tournament in Accra.

Nigeria and Ghana fell respectively to Cote d’Ivoire (1-0) and Burkina Faso (2-1) in their semi-finals  ties on Saturday and automatically missed the chance to seal tickets to the forthcoming CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

But with words rife that CAF may increase the number of teams for the continental  cadet tourney, Garba said the Golden Eaglets will press for a win even as he deplored the team’s  missed chances  in Saturday’s loss to the Baby Elephants.

“We  lost gallantly to Cote d’Ivoire but  it was  a game we should have won if we had converted some of the chances created, Garba told NationSports.“

With possibility of a lifeline to next year’s U17 AFCON through a third place finish  following the expansion of the FIFA U17 World Cup, Garba admitted  there will be plenty to play for against Ghana tomorrow.

“We are going to play host Ghana for a third place finish,” Garba further said.“ The number of teams to qualify  still depends on what CAF will say since Africa is to present about nine  or ten teams in the next World Cup and 48 countries are to participate.”

Two years ago, only the two finalists qualified for the U17 AFCON, but with the expansion of the FIFA U17 World Cup more African teams are guaranteed spots in the tournament.

Golden Eaglets’ media officer,  Francis Achi  has hinted that winners of the bronze  madam game could still quality  for the U17 AFCON.

“It is likely that three teams will qualify from WAFU Zone B for the U17 AFCON,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).“There is still all to play for in the third-place game against Ghana.”

The Black Starlets would be without their head coach in tomorrow’s  decider  following  coach Laryea Kingston’s  resignation after they fell 2-1 to Burkina Faso in their semifinal on Saturday.

Officials said that for Tuesday’s third-place match, which could produce another qualifier for the U17 AFCON, the team’s assistant coaches supported by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) technical director will take charge.

Golden Eaglets head coach Manu Garba has urged  his players to take their chances better in the final third when they face Togo on Wednesday in their  last group B tie at  the ongoing WAFU B U17 Championship in Accra, Ghana.

Following their goalless draw against Burkina Faso in the opening group game, the Golden Eaglets defeated Niger 1-0 to secure their first win in the second game.

Garba told journalists that his boys should have wrapped up the game with over three goals scored before they did against Niger and the former FIFA U-17 World Cup champions with the Golden Eaglets class of 2013 in the United Arab Emirates warned his players against being wasteful against Togo.

“We will have to beat Togo on Wednesday, they are a good side and we will not underrate them,” Garba disclosed. “We have trained the players on goal-scoring drills; Nigeria should have scored 3 goals against Niger.

“So, we hope that the players will convert their chances against Togo,” he added.

WAFU B U17 Tourney: Garba sure of formidable squad despite MRI set back

Head Coach Manu Garba has  reportedly said that the technical crew of Nigeria’s U17 boys, Golden Eaglets that he heads, is firmly on course to raise a squad capable of doing Nigeria proud at the forthcoming WAFU B U17 Championship in Ghana.

The 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup-winning team lead strategist has told Nigerians to discountenance stories of large failures of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) tests in his team and rather believe that his crew will put together a squad that will do the job of winning a ticket to next year’s Africa U17 Cup of Nations from the tournament in Ghana.

“Let me clear the air on this matter. The genuine U17 players, according to their official document made available to the NFF and the MRI tests conducted by the football body are still in the camp preparing for the WAFU B U17 tournament. When the camp opened last month, the very sincere football academies had to withdraw their players after the MRI tests they conducted showed that their players were on Grade 5. These players had to leave the camp immediately,” Garba told thenff.com.

“Those who were not sincere and thought they could find a way through one way or the other have been exposed after the NFF conducted its own MRI a few days ago, and found the results earlier presented by their players before entering the camp did not tally with the requirements of the NFF. The NFF insists on players whose results are between Grade 1 – 4. Players on Grade 5 have been asked to leave the camp.

Garba denied that his camp had been thrown into confusion due to results of the MRI tests.

“The good news is that most of the players recorded good grades in their MRI results done at the NFF-approved medical centre, and the team is looking forward to a favourable outing at the WAFU B U17 tournament in Accra, Ghana,” he noted.

Another MRI test will be conducted by the medical team of the Confederation of African Football before the beginning of the tournament.

The five-time world champions, who are title holders of the WAFU B U17 Championship, will begin the defence of their title against Burkina Faso on the 16 May.

The team has so far played nine friendly games, winning six, drawing two and losing one.

  • Amoo backs Garba as Golden Eaglets camp opens in Abuja

Amoo backs Garba as Golden Eaglets camp opens in Abuja

Former Nigeria international and erstwhile men’s national U-17 team coach, Fatai Amoo, has thrown his weight behind the newly appointed coach of the country’s cadet team, Manu Garba.

Amoo, who managed the Golden Eaglets in 2020, said Garba, with his varied experiences over the years, is capable to lead the revival of the team after missing out on global silverwares since 2015.

According to Amoo, Garba as a two-time-winner of the FIFA U-17 World Cup, first as an assistant to the late coach Yemi Tella at the 2007 in South Korea and as the team’s substantive coach at the 2013 edition in the United Arab Emirates, has all it takes to stir the Golden Eaglets to international acclaim yet again.

Nigeria last won the global FIFA cadet trophy at the 2015 edition held in Chile under coach Emmanuel Amuneke, who was Garba’s assistant in 2013.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) only last Friday named Garba as a replacement for the foremost Golden Eaglets’ captain, Nduka Ugbade, who incidentally was the former’s second assistant in 2013, with the mandate to prepare a new team for next month’s WAFU B U17 Championship, taking place in Ghana.

“With his experience, he should be able to navigate and prepare a good team within the shortest period so that he can train and groom the boys for the competition,” noted Amoo.

Speaking in the same vein in an interview with Brila FM, erstwhile Golden Eaglets striker, King Osanga, who played under Garba in 2007, said the former captain of El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri is well equipped to lead Nigeria to glory yet again.

“It (the appointment of Manu Garba) is good news because he has done it before as an assistant under Yemi Tella and he did it again in 2013 with the likes of Iheanacho, and his going back there again is a good thing because he has been a proven winner at this category,” the former Étoile Sportive du Sahel of Tunisia striker said.

Meanwhile, our correspondent gathered that the Golden Eaglets camp will expectedly open today (April 17th) in Abuja as the team commences preparations in earnest for next month’s WAFU B U17 Championship in Ghana.

Brodrick-Imasuen: Garba lauds late Eaglets’ coach for El-Kanemi’s FA Cup win

Foremost national youth teams’ coach, Manu Garba, has paid an emotional tribute to late  veteran  coach Sebastian Brodrick-Imasuen, adding  the Octogenarian who passed on Wednesday  in Benin would never be forgotten  for being the first to deliver the  glamorous   FA Cup to a northern team after almost four decades of interregnum through El Kanemi Warriors in 1991.

Garba said Brodrick-Imasuen who was also the first African to win a FIFA World Cup of any kind when he led Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets to global success at the maiden Kodak U-16 World Cup at China 1985, would always be remembered  for his puritanical devotion  to football.

“ Masha Allah. RIP Coach Sabara. He was my coach at El-Kanemi Warriors Maiduguri when we won the national FA cup in 1991 beating Kano Pillars 3-2 at the National Stadium in  Surulere, Lagos ,” Garba, a two-time winner of the FIFA U-17 World Cup who incidentally captained El-Kanemi in their two FA cup glories, noted in a well-worded message to our correspondent.

He continued: “The north won the national FA cup last in 1953 courtesy of Kano 1X and that was the reason former Military Administrator , Col.  Abdul Mumini Aminu (retd)  formed El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri in the 1986/87 football season specifically because  he wanted a team to win the Nigerian Challenge Cup,” Garba, a graduate of History from University of Maiduguri recalled.

“We had the best collection of players in the year 1988 with the likes of Late Wilfred Agbonavbere, Sunday Egboibe, late Mike Odu, Friday Elaho, Ndubuisi Okosieme, Samson Siasia, Gabriel Okonkwo , Emmanuel Okonkwo, Benedict Ugwu Surugede, Okey Isima, Arthur Egbunam, Amaechi Otti, Hussaini Suleiman, Hassan Abdallah, Manu Garba, Emesi Okereke, Nduka Ugbade and a host of other great players and coaches like Okey Emordi, late Christopher Udumezue as well as Brazilian Coach Roberto Diaz .

“But it was only in 1991 when General Buba Marwa (retd) was Governor of Borno state and late Coach Sebastian Brodrick-Imasuen  was the head coach of El-Kanemi Warriors of  Maiduguri that we won the second division pro League and the national FA Cup in 1991.

“ We defended the National FA cup in 1992 with late Shuaibu Amodu as the head coach beating Stationery Stores of Lagos 2-1 in Makurdi.

“ But it was  through coach Sebastian Brodrick-Imasuen  that El-Kanemi  and indeed a team from northern Nigeria  won  the national FA Cup  for the first time in 38 years in 1991 as such, we cannot forget coach Sabara, “ added Garba who last won the CAF U20 AFCON for Nigeria at Senegal 2015.

  • Lasisi, Garba present Phenomenal Lagos

Last year May, two art journalists Akeem Lasisi (Punch) and Kabir Alabi Garba (The Guardian) started writing a book intended to capture some iconic places in Lagos. They planned to present it as part of their contributions to the Lagos @50 celebration that ended last month, but that was not to be.

At a recent sneak preview and presentation of the 120-page book titled: Phenomenal Lagos: 50 Iconic places in the Centre of Excellence, to some arts and culture writers in Lagos, the authors recalled how the journey began, urging colleagues to explore the many opportunities provided by the profession to enhance themselves. They added that journalists should never be discouraged by whatever challenges they may face.

The coffee-colour, hard cover book contains comprehensive profiles, photographs and poems on the selected iconic places. It celebrates the socio-cultural and political monuments of Lagos. Its aesthetically packaged sharp pictures complemented the brief history and poetic verses that illuminate the souls of the sites to its readers.

To the duo,  the publication aimed to enrich the historical archive in an attempt to preserve Lagos cultural heritage. In the course of selection, the authors considered the five divisions of Lagos called ‘Ibile’, which include Ikorodu, Epe, Badagry, Ikeja and Lagos Island.

“We decided to do a comprehensive research and found out why some places bear the name they are called today. We found out why Mushin is called Mushin. Why Agege is called Agege and many more like that. We aimed for a very high quality so as to be presentable in places that matter,” said Lasisi.

On the challenges encountered, Garba said they have learnt a lot of lessons. “The major lesson we learnt in this journey is that nothing is impossible. If you go for any event, present something unique and presentable and don’t stop at that. Interpret your stories. Learn how to manage your life wherever you find yourself.”

The seasoned art writers acknowledged Lagos State’s support towards the realisation of the project, especially at the printing stage of the book. They noted that the selection of the various places was done in conjunction with Mr. Steve Ayorinde, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy.

“We didn’t stop at culture and tourism. We considered the political, historical, religious and business landscape of Lagos in our selection. In the book, you will find such edifices like stock exchange, computer village, whispering palm for tourism, City Hall, Lagos House, the first judiciary building in Lagos, point of no return, first church in Nigeria, first mosque in Lagos, Eko Hotel and others,” Lasisi said.

In the foreword to the book, Prof Olanrewaju Fagbohun described the book as a direct interpretation of celebrating those socio-cultural and political monuments of Lagos. “Some of the iconic places featured are history personified. Others directly project the state’s tradition and culture, including some that justifiably echo its economic destiny,” Prof Fagbohun said.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Steve Ayorinde said in the prologue that the uniqueness of the compendium lies in the poetic verses that complement the brief history and pictorial representation of each of the 50 iconic sites.

Lasisi, who is Assistant Editor with The Punch, has distinguished himself as a performance poet in the past 25 years He has also performed poetry in different parts of Nigeria and countries like South Africa, Germany and Brazil.

Similarly, Garba, who holds Masters of Science degree in Mass Communication from Lagos State University, Lagos as well as Post graduate Diploma Certificate in Journalism from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Ogba Ikeja Lagos, is an Assistant Editor with The Guardian.

  • Garba: Dreaming big for ABU

    Garba: Dreaming big for ABU

Nothing was indeed put in place either in form of plans or preparations by authorities of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, to rejoice with its Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Ibrahim Garba, who on Monday, clocked two years in office.

Garba, a professor of Geology, assumed office on May 4, 2015 after taking over from Prof Abdullahi Mustapha, on April 30, 2015.

Understandably, Garba’s decision not to roll out drums for celebration might simply be out of humility or probably because the past two years are too short to access an administration that will run for five years. However, it will be uncharitable for some of us who keenly watch every unfolding development in the university not to bring to public knowledge some of the laudable works Garba is doing for this revered institution.

ABU, which has a good complement of international students and staff, has its own peculiar characteristics. Till date, it is such a huge institution that requires a leader with a strong academic background as well as a sound and broad administrative experience of the university system. Such leader must also show sufficient vision, moral courage and qualities of character that will assist him withstand all the strains and stresses of university governance, as clearly contained in a Government White Paper on Presidential Visitation Panel for the university in 2000.

The university is widely regarded as the most cosmopolitan tertiary institution in Nigeria, both in terms of staff and student profiles. It has been established that every local government in Nigeria has students in the institution just as all states of the federation have a representative in the staff profile of the university. The institution is one of the greatest universities in the sub-Saharan Africa.

At present, the university has 13 faculties, 12 specialised institutes and centers, a school of postgraduate studies and 98 academic departments. In addition, it has a division of agricultural colleges, a school of basic and remedial studies, a secondary and a primary school. This is besides offering extensive and consultancy services which provide a variety of expertise to the university and the wider society.

Garba, soon after he took over, made it loud and clear at any given forum that he would consolidate on the gains made by his predecessors. For example, he strived to ensure the university maintains its academic standard by establishing institutional linkages, exchanges, collaborative researches and mutual staff training agreements with some other local and international institutions in line with world best practice.

In the past two years, a good number of specialised institutions have presented themselves for partnership with the university in form of affiliations and collaborations. This is a result of his great concern for attainment of highest academic standards and achievements to be able to have a university true to its ideals and meaning in line with the vision and mission of ABU’s founding fathers.

Some of the institutions include Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), which signed a memorandum of understanding with ABU to commence postgraduate diploma and masters in Transport and Logistics, as well as Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), which has also collaborated with the university to introduce insurance courses at its Department of Business Administration.

The university also signed research collaboration agreements with De Montfort University, Leicester; International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property and National Museums and Monuments; and Centre of Excellence in Reproductive Health Innovation (CERHI), Benin City. Equally, there is ongoing discussion with Robert Gordon University (RGU), UK, based on a visit in November last year by the VC and Dean of Engineering, Prof Muhammad Dauda for collaborative development of MSc Oil and Gas Engineering as well as joint delivery for prospective candidates.

When Garba realised that the cost of power supply to the university community could not be sustained, he undertook to diversify the energy sources to ensure sustainability as well as engendering flexibility in the energy supply to the university. He realised that renewable energy sources offered the best alternative to achieving his twin ambition of delivering flexible as well as sustainable power supply to the university.

Consequently, a delegation from the university visited Hungary in May, last year where it examined the possibilities for adaptation of bio-energy plant based on existing facility in Hungary. Accordingly, it was agreed that ABU will establish a biogas plant to be based on the university’s wastewater treatment plant system, a bio-ethanol plant using industrial maize silage as raw material and a bio-ethanol and disinfectant manufacturing plant which is expected to provide an organic manure of 1133 tons per annum.

Garba must be praised for the stability in running the university, even though there were occasional tough engagements with in-house unions, especially when some of their demands could not be met. The secret behind the sustained stability in the system stemmed from the vice chancellor’s high sense of responsibility and tremendous respect for the unions. He would always and patiently have dialogue with workers’ unions in an attmpt to implement the university Council’s decisions, an action that sometimes is not in tandem with definition of welfare, rights and privileges.

University governance is not without challenges. The vice chancellor, like all his colleagues all over the federation, faces the challenge of inadequate funding to cater for overhead costs and other expenditure. The level of current capital allocation to the university is utterly inadequate to cater for routine needs and services, which would always give any VC some sleepless nights. Yet Garba kicks and dreams tall for ABU!

  • Attempted murder: Court adjourns Chinese businessman’s case

A Kano High Court on Wednesday adjourned the case of attempted murder of a Kano-based Chinese businessman, Mr. Wu Haiwang to May 11, for ruling on whether or not that the state counsel should be allowed to tender a written statement by a witness interviewed by the Police.

Wu, who narrowly escaped the murder attempt with serious injuries, was attacked sometime in July 2016 at his warehouse in Kano.

NAN reports that when the case came up for hearing, counsel for the accused, Mr. M. L. Garba demand that all documents relevant to the case be brought to the court.

According to him, the documents included the statements written by the witnesses interviewed by the Police and all other documents relevant to the case.

He said his insistence to see the documents would enable him to prepare very well for his defense.

However, in his submission, the State’s Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. L. D. Sulaiman, objected to the application of the counsel to the accused person.

After listening to the heated argument from both sides, the presiding Judge, Justice Hadiza Sulaiman, adjourned the case until May 11, for ruling on whether the Court would grant the request of the counsel to the accused.
