    Gateway United continue push for NNL Playoff

    Gateway United kept their hopes alive for picking the NNL playoff spot with a 2-1 victory over rivals Inter Lagos FC at MKO Abiola International Stadium.

     The team, led by Samson Omiponle, remains unbeaten in seven games, securing four consecutive home wins, and has amassed 22 points, trailing the table topper Osun United by four points.

    The outgoing Head of Service in the state, Mr. Kola Peter Fagbohun, performed the ceremonial kickoff. Right from the start, Gateway United showed attacking intent, with Samuel Christian attempting a long-range effort. Stand-in captain Ediddon Adrian also had a chance, hitting the crossbar with a half-volley, while Wasiu Falolu narrowly missed the target with a low shot.

    In the 45th  minute, Odusina Sunkanmi broke the deadlock with a precise low volley. Thirteen minutes into the second half, Babatunde Taofeek was fouled in the opponents’ box, resulting in a penalty which Ediddon Adrian calmly converted to double Gateway United’s lead.

    With 10 minutes remaining, Akinola Wale pulled one back for the visitors with a header, but Oladeji Joshua ensured the scoreline remained the same by saving a free kick.

    Coach Samson Omiponle praised his team’s character, resilience, and grit, expressing excitement and confidence in their ability to secure a playoff spot.

    He said his boys are ready to pick the maximum points in Uyo. “We would play One Rocket on Sunday. They robbed us of three points in the first leg at home. We will reclaim those points in Uyo.”

    Gateway United unleashed a second-half onslaught to secure a dominant win over Warri Wolves at MKO Abiola Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta in Matchday 13 of the 2023/2024 Nigeria National League campaign.

    Keeping their lineup unchanged from the previous draw against Solution FC in Anambra, the team entered halftime with the score tied.

    But after an electrifying pep talk from coach Samson Omiponle, the players came out firing. Five minutes into the second half, Odusina Sunkanmi latched onto a tantalizing cross from Babatunde Damilare to break the deadlock.

     Moments later, Babatunde Taofeek mesmerized the Warri Wolves’ defense with his skillful footwork, calmly finishing to extend the lead. The provider turned scorer as Damilare Babatunde capitalized on a goalkeeper’s spill to increase the advantage to a 3 goal lead.

    With just 12 minutes remaining, Falolu Wasiu added the cherry on top with a breathtaking free-kick from 25 yards out, aiming for the top corner.

    With this commanding performance, Gateway United extends their unbeaten streak to five  games.

    Gateway United will next be on the road against Trade Safe at Mobolaji Stadium on Saturday, 16th  March 16.

    Meanwhile, coach Samson Omiponle  was enthusiastic  with the victoy, adding there’s more to come from his side.

    “An emphatic win it was. I said it in Anambra that we would consolidate on the draw. The boys executed the game plan well enough particularly in the second half,” he said. “We are away next in Lagos. We will double our efforts. Our plan is to keep winning. There’s definitely more to come. We will repay the confidence reposed in us.”

    Gritty Gateway United secure valuable point against Osun United

    Damilare Babatunde’s last-minute header secured a crucial point for Gateway United against Osun United at Osogbo Township Stadium in Osun State.

    In a rescheduled  Nigeria National League (NNL) game, Coach Samson Omiponle made three changes, with Joshua Oladeji, Samuel Ovenseri, and Gbenga Benedict joining the line-up.

    The hosts initiated the first attempt within a minute, but the defense marshalled by Adekunle Adeniyi and Okafor Ugochukwu promptly cleared the danger. Subsequently, Gateway United took control, and Gbenga Benedict’s long-range effort narrowly missed the target.

    The remainder of the half was tightly contested, leading to a stalemate at halftime.

    Coach Omiponle bolstered  his attack by  introducing  four substitutions 15 minutes into the other half, bringing in Lanre  Ferinyaro, Taofeek Babatunde, Sunkanmi Odusina, and  Damilare Babatunde.

    However, it was Osun United that took the lead in the 76th  minute when Paul Agbor slotted in a loose ball from a free kick.

    Undeterred, Omiponle’s side intensified their efforts  which  eventually paid off as Damilare Babatunde nodded in a flick-on from Taofeek Babatunde in the dying minutes of the game.

    The provider Babatunde Taofeek nearly turned scorer, coming close to giving Gateway United the lead by capitalizing on a miskick from Paul Agbor and navigated the box, but his low effort was blocked. In the final moments, Gateway United secured a valuable point, marking their first on the road in two away games.

    Up next for Gateway United is its first home game of the season Against Giant Brillars on Saturday , 9th  December.

    Meanwhile, coach Omiponle  has lauded his side’s spirited performance, promising  more positive results.

    ” I’m quite excited with the result. We planned for a win but got a draw. It’s the start for more positive results. Promptly, I have shifted our focus to our first home game on Saturday. We want to win and win well. We want the fans to know that their darling team will leave no stone unturned,” he  said.
