Gaiya: Nigeria needs to work hard to be in Morocco 2015

The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Sports, Godfrey Ali Gaiya has stated that the Super Eagles must up their games to get wins in Congo and against South Africa to set Nigeria’s title defence ambition on track.

The Super Eagles got their first win in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying series against Sudan in Abuja and only picked four points in a possible twelve.

Nigeria have to pick all six points waiting in the wings at the expense of South Africa and Congo who are first and second on the log respectively but Gaiya said the win in Abuja is a new boost for the team and that the team must work hard to get the needed results.

“The win in Abuja was a well deserved victory, it has repositioned Nigeria and with good displays in the next two matches we may as well qualify for Morocco 2015,” Gaiya stated.

The Reps Committee on Sports, Chairman apart from urging the players to work hard also encouraged them to be united as this is key to Nigeria’s dream of qualifying for the AFCON.

“Hard work is key, there isn’t a substitute to hard work. It’s important for the players to show more hunger, determination and commitment,” Gaiya concluded.

  • Gaya declares for Kano governorship poll

Senator Kabiru Gaya, representing Kano South, on Thursday declared his intention to contest the Kano State governorship election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015.

Gaya made the declaration while inaugurating the ICT Centre which he built at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Press Centre in Kano.

He said that his decision to enter the governorship race was borne out of his desire to bring about the much-needed development in the state.

“I want to consolidate on the numerous achievements recorded by Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso’s administration in terms of infrastructure development in the state.

“Kwankwaso returned to power in 2011 after his first tenure which ran from 1999 to 2003. I also want to return to power in 2015, that is why I want to formally declare my intention here,’’ he said.

The lawmaker recalled that the press had played a significant role when he contested for the governorship of the state and won in 1992 and called on them to repeat the gesture.

He urged the people of the state to give him the necessary support and cooperation to be the next governor of the state come 2015.

Gaya said that he had been able to provide dividends of democracy since he was elected as Senator representing Kano South Senatorial zone.

He said that he had established three classrooms in each of the 44 local government areas of the state in addition to the establishment of 17 skills acquisition centres in his constituency.

“I have also empowered a number of women and youths under the poverty alleviation programmes, built over 5, 000 irrigation tube wells and constructed a number of solar-powered bore holes in various parts of the state, among others.

“The essence of leadership is performance, so I will continue to do more in order to improve the living standard of our people,’’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the Senator as saying at the forum.

    INEC condemns Kano by-elections

    …Indicts security agents

From the Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday came a damning verdict on last Saturday by-elections into Gaya and Garko state assembly constituencies in Kano State.

A statement by the commission’s Chief Press Secretary, Kayode Idowu, alleged that voters and officials were harassed, intimidated and assaulted by armed youths, while security agents failed to intervene.

The statement reads: “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received reports of assault, intimidation and harassment of voters and election officials during the by-elections into Gaya and Garko state assembly constituencies in Kano State held on Saturday, February 2, 2013.

“Field reports available to the commission revealed that mobs of armed youths disrupted the electoral process in some areas, harassing and intimidating innocent voters. Electoral officials were also intimidated, harassed and threatened, while some INEC supervisory officials were assaulted.

“The commission is highly disappointed that the culture of thuggery, intolerance and unruly conduct by partisans yet bedevil the electoral process in our country.

“Regrettably, reports also showed that despite the overwhelming show of force by armed youths during the Kano State by-election, security agents failed to intervene. INEC is concerned that under the circumstance, the elections were conducted in an unwholesome atmosphere that interfered with voters’ exercise of their freedom of choice.

“The commission hereby affirms that this sort of situation must not be allowed in our political process because it subverts the fundamental principle of free, fair and credible elections. INEC therefore calls on security agencies to remain vigilant; and to promptly intervene, whenever necessary, against the use of thuggery to intimidate or harass voters, thereby subverting the political process.”
