    Rotary Gbagada inducts president

Penultimate Sunday at the Yoruba Tennis Club in Onikan, Lagos Island, members of the Rotary Club, Gbagada, installed Olanrewaju Akintilo their 33rd president. JOSEPH ESHANOKPE reports.

THE Greetings Hall of Yoruba Tennis Club in Onikan, Lagos, was a beehive of activities two Sundays ago when members of the Rotary Club of Gbagada inducted Olanrewaju Akintilo as their 33rd president.

Outgoing president of the club Otunba Olusola Adenuga-Taiwo was glad that he had completed his one year tenure. Presenting his scorecard, he noted that he completed at least one project in each of the six core areas of the Rotary Foundation.

He said the club also completed a project started by his predecessor Prof Olukayode Taiwo in Cotonou, Benin Republic, and chartered a new Rotary club in Ago Iwoye. It inducted four members, contributed immensely to the Rotary Foundation and PolioPlus Fund, and supported small scale businesses with N1.5million in Ososa, Ijebu, Ogun State.

Specifically, Adenuga-Taiwo praised Hon Isola Ogunsola for his support; adding that without him, he would not have achieved much. He gave him and some Board members of the club awards.

After his speech, Akintilo was called to the podium. He shone in his white dress, with office insignia dangling around his neck. After his citation, at 3.50pm, Akintilo was ‘sworn-in as the 33rd president amid a song titled: ‘It’s a small world. It is a small world. It is a small, small world.’’

At that moment, the District Governor (DG) Pat Ikheloa arrived in the hall. The MC, while welcoming the DG, said the DG came ‘’at the right time when the mantle of leadership is being passed to Akintilo’’.

Akintilo paid tribute to his grandmother Madam Segilola Adeagbo (Iya Ibeji) for his upbringing, and more importantly, for inculcating in him the virtue of doing good. He decried the resurgence of polio virus, two years after Nigeria was cleared of the epidemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Akintilo sought  support to tackle the disease and ensure that it is eradicated.

On his card for the year are the provision of two dialysis machines at the General Hospital, Gbagada and renovation of Ifako Primary School. So far, he has presented some materials to children suffering from clinic feet at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.

Launching a special fund to prosecute his projects and programmes, Akintilo urged his friends and family members to assist his administration. The response was impressive as there was ‘naira and dollar  rain’ thereafter.

The President-elect Adefowoke Williams described Akintilo as a seasoned PR practitioner.  She reminded him that he was ‘taking over a winning club, noting: ‘’It is the leading club in District 9110, having won the ‘coveted best club award’ for 13 years, seven of which were back-to-back and produced three DGs since it was carted in 1984’’.

Lagos State University (LASU) Vice Chancellor Prof Lanre Fagbohun, who was guest speaker, sought support for youth empowerment, saying that the success of a nation depended on its youths. Education, he noted, could galvanise the youth for national development. With the right education, he submitted, the youth, would be prepared for national assignments.

Fagbohun , who spoke for about 15 minutes, praised Rotary and similar organisations for living up to their objectives and that they always look for ways to make lives better.

    Gbagada Hospital blood bank closed

The Lagos State House of Assembly, through its Committee on Health Services, yesterday ordered the closure of the blood bank section of the Gbagada General Hospital.

The committee, which was accompanied by the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFEMAA), took this action after discovering some unethical procedures during an inspection of the hospital.

Committee Chairman Segun Olulade authorised the closure due to the anomaly of screened and unscreened blood muddle observed by HEFEMAA team leader and Executive Secretary, Dr. Mabel Adjekughele.

Dr. Adjejughele observed that the blood bank was in a bad state, with screened and unscreened blood lumped together.

She observed that blood that have tested positive were  muddled up with negative ones.

Noting that the negligence poses a danger to patients, the HEFEMAA team leader advised that the blood bank be closed.

The committee also visited the Cardiac and Renal Centre, where the Director, Prof. Babatunde Olabode Green, told the committee that some of the equipment were not functioning, either due to improper installation or poor quality of materials.

  • Community kicks as hit-and-run driver kills man in Lagos

Community kicks as hit-and-run driver kills man in Lagos

Residents of Gbagada have cried out to government for help after a man identified as Oguntimehin Oluwayemi B. was knocked down by a car Tuesday morning while attempting to cross the Mafowoku/Gbagada bus stop along Lagos/Ibadan express way.

According to eye witness account, Oguntimehin “was still breathing after the accident and people came to rescue him off the express way but there was no vehicle that could convey him to the General Hospital at Gbagada.”

He gave up the ghost 20 minutes later — sustaining multiple injuries.

Kabiawu Babajide, Gen. Sec. of Council of Oworonsoki Youth Forum told The Nation that: “the ATM card in his pocket indicated his identity but we do not know where he resides. We called the emergency number 112 and 767 they promised that the emergency team will come to the scene but they do not arrive after 6 hours before we left the scene.”

Babajide decried the incessant similar incidents “since 1979, Lagos/Ibadan express way has been the epicenter of massacre in the history of Lagos State road accident. This Federal road has claimed many lives of innocent citizen caught across in trying to cross this express way to the other side.

“Most especially at Gbagada bus stop opposite Mobil Filling Station, times without numbers, we have witnessed similar occurences involving students, residents.”

Oguntimeyin flayed governement neglect from saving the populace: “It is unfortunate that since 1979, the Federal government does not have any contingency plan to save the populace from this frequent tragedy that normally occurs at Mafowoku and Gbagada bus stop.”

“We have written several letters to the Federal and State government to help construct pedestrian Bridge at Mafowoku and Gbagada bus stop in order to put an end to the massacre of innocent people caused by Vehicle accident.

He re-iterated that the association has also solicited the attention of the Federal and Lagos State government towards the pedestrian bridge situated at Olopomeji area. This pedestrian bridge has deteriorated or dilapidated
completely and it poses an imminent threat which could be disastrous.

  • Murder in Gbagada

While we are still on the issue of promising Nigerians cut down in their prime, it is sad to report of a great tragedy that occurred in the Gbagada suburbs of Lagos last weekend. It was murder most foul. Like all freshly wedded people, Ugochukwu Ozuah looked forward to a life of bliss and prosperity with Joan, his fetching bride. With the home front firmly secured, his head must have been humming with a million brilliant ideas about the future. But this was not to be. The young man was cut down in a hail of bullets.

His family insist that the police are the culprits. The police are insisting that the dastardly act was carried out by still unknown assailants, possibly armed robbers. Somebody must be lying. What is clear is that Ugochukwu did not kill himself. He did not commit suicide. Or perhaps he did by being born in the wrong country at the wrong time. When he was asked whether he had a conception of hell, Wole Soyinka famously retorted that having lived in Nigeria for over seventy years, he had a fair idea of what hell is like.

But we deceive and make a big fool of ourselves if we think the rest of the world is not aware of what goes on in Nigeria. Contrary to days of yore when savagery and barbarity could be hidden, we now live in an open global village. Even before snooper received a plaintive report of the crime the following morning from one of Nigeria’s top female lawyers whose son was one of the groomsmen at the wedding, the internet, Facebook, Twitter and other global fora of enhanced social communication were already awash with report of the murder in all its chilling and horrendous details.

This is one heinous murder too many, and it must not be allowed to be swept under the carpet. All those who have children of marrying age must rise as one to demand justice. In Latin America, they ended up with Mothers of the Disappeared. In Nigeria, Mothers of the Murdered (MOM) should rise as a group. As usual, the police have begun to muddy the water. They declared promptly and peremptorily that the poor chap was a victim of armed robbers. Then they resorted to the familiar Kayode Soyinka Syndrome by fingering a near victim as a principal suspect. This will not wash.

It is just as well that the energetic, enterprising and proactive new Inspector General of police is reported to have requested for the file. Readers of this column will notice that we are always reluctant to damn the police. This is the first time in five and a half years that we are coming down hard on our police force. This is because we feel for the plight of an under-manned, under-paid and under-motivated police force. But there can be no denying that the Nigerian multi-ethnic underclass has sent its most homicidal and pathological elements to the force. These are the trigger-happy scoundrels and criminals in uniform. Nigeria will know no peace until they are de-coupled.

Until the debate about state police is resolved one way or the other, the I-G has his work cut out for him. The list of victims of police elimination is long and lengthy, and so is the trail of proper justice. A few years back, Bayo Awosika, the son in law of the revered columnist, Allah De, was murdered in gruesome circumstances at a Police Check point in Lekki Phase 1. Nothing has been heard of the case. Mr Abubakar must be told that enough is enough.
