ELEGBELEYE’S VISION: NPFL chief reveals ambitious reform plans for elite league

The Nigeria Premier Football League has endured years of criticism, scepticism, and outright dismissal. Yet beneath the noise, structural changes are beginning to take shape. But NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye laid bare the challenges as well as the drive behind the league’s slow but deliberate rebuild,  writes TUNDE LIADI.

“What next for the Nigerian league?” is a question that has echoed for years, often framed in doubt and frustration.

For the Nigeria Premier Football League Chairman, Gbenga Elegbeleye, the answer begins with honesty — and shared responsibility.

“One thing with us in Nigeria,” Elegbeleye observed in a lively conversation  with  veteran journalist , Mitchel  Obi  on his  Sports Salsa. “Whatever you are doing that is positive, some will not like to see the good side of it.

“They always want to find a way to destroy what is happening in the local scene,” he noted.

Despite  amid persistent criticism, the NPFL chairman finds encouragement in shifting public perception.

“I am grateful to God that Nigerians are seeing the good side of what we are doing,” he said. “It is the most important thing.”

Elegbeleye’s vision for the NPFL is rooted in patience and realism. He is under no illusion about the gulf between Nigeria and Europe, but he insists that progress — however gradual — must be protected. “We want to do something that Nigerians will appreciate with the league we are running,” he explained, “not just now, but in the immediate and in the long run.”

For him, building a competitive league is a journey, not an event.

“The league that is capable of competing with the best in the world — you don’t get that overnight,” Elegbeleye stressed. “You just have to gradually find a way to navigate yourself away from the problems associated with the league and make progress.”

One of the most tangible symbols of that progress is the league’s return to television. After years in the shadows, NPFL matches are now broadcast free-to-air, a development Elegbeleye believes changes everything. “We are now fully on television,” he said. “Not just on television, but free to air too.”

While acknowledging the gap between Nigeria and elite European leagues, he remains firm in his resolve. “We can’t reach European standards overnight, but we have moved forward from where we used to be — and there is no going back.”

He  also addressed the relationship between the domestic league and the national team, insisting that local football must be visible to national coaches. “A national team coach must be able to attend local matches,” he said. “We cannot force a coach to take any player, but we know we have players in the local league who can compete with their foreign professionals.”

On Super Eagles coach Eric Sekou Chelle, Elegbeleye struck a conciliatory tone. “I may not blame the coach,” he admitted. “He came in when we were preparing for both World Cup qualifiers and AFCON. He met a team on ground and there was no ample time for him to go around to search for local players.”

Also, officiating remains one of the most sensitive talking points in Nigerian football, but Elegbeleye is keen to strip the debate of emotion and place it in global context.

“Officiating is a global problem,” he stated plainly. “It is not peculiar to Nigeria alone.”

While referees are products of the Nigeria Football Federation, Elegbeleye insists the NPFL is not helpless. “We as league operators have reasons and the ability to tell the referee appointment coordinator that we identify some referees not to be okay,” he revealed — adding that the NFF has been fully cooperative. “They always accept. The NFF is 100 percent with us in this.”

He acknowledges that not all controversial decisions are born of malice. “Some of the complaints about officiating are human errors,” Elegbeleye said, while stressing that standard have improved. “If you see the level of officiating at the AFCON, you will know ours have improved.”

With the return of live broadcasts, scrutiny has intensified — and the chairman welcomes it. “Now that television is back, the referees should know that they must improve,” he warned. “They are now in the eye of the world.”

Structural upgrades are already in place. “Unlike before, referees now have communication gadgets,” Elegbeleye noted, praising the current NFF board. “I must give kudos to them — it was through the board that we got the communication gadgets for the match officials.”

Looking ahead, the NPFL is considering a major technological leap. “Next season, we shall think of moving to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR),” he disclosed, while urging caution. “People must be trained on how to operate the VAR machines.”

Infrastructure is another pressing concern. While stadiums were approved at the start of the season, Elegbeleye confirms that adjustments are coming.

“During the course of the season, there may be adjustments,” he said, including “banishing clubs to pitches that are more football-friendly.” He added pointedly, “We shall do something about stadiums with bad pitches in the next few days.”

Beyond governance and facilities, financial growth remains a quiet but powerful marker of progress.

Elegbeleye highlighted the steady rise in prize money: “When we started, Enyimba got ₦100 million. Rangers got ₦150 million. Last season, Remo Stars received ₦200 million.”

While further increases are hoped for, stability remains the focus. “We hope to increase it again this season,” he said, “but we may still stay at where we currently are.”

He described it as a historic milestone for the NPFL in terms of planning, execution, and overall integrity.

“It is my great pleasure and delight to welcome everyone here for a brief review of the highly successful season that began on August 31, 2024, and concluded on May 25, 2025,” he began.

“For the first time in many years, perhaps since the start of the new era of the Nigeria Premier Football League in 2005—twenty years ago—a date for kick-off and ending was faithfully implemented. That is a commitment we made, and a promise delivered,” Elegbeleye added.

He emphasized the importance of consistency in scheduling and announced that the new season would begin on August 22, 2025, and conclude in May 2026, reinforcing the league’s resolve to maintain a stable football calendar. “This is to maintain a calendar we have now established from the last season,” he stated.

The NPFL Chairman also presented key highlights from the 2024/25 season, which saw Remo Stars make history by clinching the title with three games to spare after their Matchday 35 victory over Niger Tornadoes on April 27.

A total of 380 matches were played across the season, with each of the 20 teams playing 19 home and 19 away games. The season recorded 286 wins, 94 draws, and 784 total goals. Of those, 552 goals were scored at home and 232 by away teams, including 60 penalty goals—16 of which were missed. The campaign also featured 13 own goals and four hat tricks.

The top three teams were Remo Stars, Rivers United, and Abia Warriors, while on the goal scoring chart, Yusuf Anas of Nasarawa United led with 18 goals, followed by Rabiu Ali with 13 and Anthony Ijoma of Abia Warriors with 12. Anas accounted for two of the four hat tricks, with the remaining two netted by Isaac Saviour of Rangers and Ahmadu Liman of Sunshine Stars.

Disciplinary statistics showed 1,380 yellow cards issued and 56 red cards throughout the season.

On broadcast and streaming, Elegbeleye said, “Of the 380 matches, 188 were covered live by StarTimes, while Propel streamed over 200. That coverage has played a key role in expanding access and engagement.”

He concluded by appreciating the media and stakeholders for their unwavering support. “Thank you again for your consistent support and positive reportage of the NPFL. The detailed stats are on our website, or you can contact Dr. Sunny Obaseki, our Head of Competitions,” he said.

With the 2025/26 season already mapped out, the NPFL leadership is determined to build on the momentum of what has been widely regarded as one of the most successful seasons in Nigerian club football history.

He is specifically excited by the Festival Ambassadors initiative, which he said would feed the aspirational hunger of budding athletes.

“The goals of Kanu, Ikpeba and Amunike were crucial in getting Nigeria an important gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games just as our anchor, Ene ran the race of his life which resulted in Nigeria securing a gold medal in 4 x 400m in Australia, four years later.

“Blessing Oborodudu’s heroics on the mat culminated in a much needed Olympics silver medal while two-time African Athletics Championship winner Seun Ogunkoya’s record in 100m remains intact since 1998,” Elegbeleye noted.

Supporting the inclusion of Paralympic athlete and coach, Patience Igbiti who clinched medals in consecutive Olympic Games, Elegbeleye remarked that

“Patience’s consistency in Powerlifting got her Olympic Games medals in 2004 and 2008 before becoming a coach of repute.”

An indigene of Ondo State, one of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) mandate states, Elegbeleye said he is proud to be part of the region that has blazed the trail in regional games as a trigger for grassroots sports development.

The festival Ambassadors will be unveiled at a ceremony in Owerri, Imo State on Friday, March 7 and over 3000 athletes and 600 coaches from nine states would be in Uyo to compete for medals in 17 sports.

Speaking yesterday, Elegbeleye said he was wowed with the smooth opening of the NNL season, adding  that a good start is always important in everything such that one can work towards retaining the good record set from the start.

Elegbeleye said: “I am so happy with reports we got from the NNL league that just started. The NPFL should work with the NNL to ensure the leagues are evolving in a perspective that we will say it’s growing and now we have the league of our dreams.  We can go out there and win matches without undue favouritism for the home team. If you play well you will win.

“That is the kind of football league that I want and the premier league is working on that. I’m sure if we go back to Nigerian football ecosystem; we will have a standard that all of us can be proud of and the Europeans will look at us and say there’s an improvement.

“The consistency of keeping the league strong is that challenge before all the domestic leagues and this means we cannot afford to rest at all. We have to work, work and work to keep the standard at the expected level in all our operations.”

  • NPFL: ODSFA inaugurates seven-man technical committee

The Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA) on Tuesday inaugurated a new technical committee for Sunshine Stars to ensure a better outing in the Nigeria Professional Football League.

Speaking at the event in Akure, Chairman of ODSFA Interim Management Committee, Gbenga Elegbeleye, said members of the technical committee were carefully selected based on their proven track records and knowledge of the game.

“We thank God for the journey so far and we appreciate the support we have received from the football family and the entire soccer loving people of the state.

“Members of the technical committee are people with great knowledge of the game and we hope they will use their wealth of experience to take our darling team, Sunshine Stars to the next level,’’ he said.

Responding, the Vice Chairman of the technical committee, Mr Steve Alabi said that members would work closely with the team’s technical crew led by Austin Eguavoen to achieve the desired results, describing the choice of Eguavoen as ‘perfect’.

“We know what is at stake and we are ready to face the challenges, a great call to serve and by the grace of God and the support of all football stakeholders, we shall reach the promise land,” he said.

ODSFA’s Technical Director, Sunday Erelesusi urged members of the technical committee to do their best for the team.

The Technical Committee members include; Prince Tunde Ogunja as Chairman, while Chief Oyewole Ajidagba serves as Secretary and Mr Steve Alabi is the Vice Chairman.

Other members of the committee are: Mr Dele Ogungbemi, Mr Fidelis Fabidun, Mr Yomi Ifabumuyi, and Mr Ayodele Clement.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sunshine Stars have 24 points from 19 matches in the current soccer season in Nigeria.

  • Who is after Gbenga Elegbeleye’s life?

Ever since former Director General of National Sports Commissions and former Chairman House Committee on Sports, Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye, indicated his plan to contest the number one seat in Ondo State, he has been met with violent antagonism within his party  the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The party that was to act as his launch pad has since become a stumbling block on his path to being the next governor of Ondo State.

He has suffered coordinated assaults by alleged PDP thugs in Ode-Irele and Owo, Ondo State, on different occasions, from which he barely escaped. These developments have generated insinuations from different sections that some top members of the party are afraid of his popularity.

Political thugs brandishing axe and other dangerous weapons had attacked his entourage in Irele, claiming that they were after a particular politician from the local government. In Owo, Elegbeleye was billed to address party leaders at the party’s secretariat, but minutes before his arrival, 15 gunmen invaded the secretariat, shooting sporadically and claiming that they were not appointed supervisors in the local government.

Curiously, Elegbeleye, who hails from Akoko North East Local Government Area, has no direct or remote involvement in picking supervisors in Owo.

  • Kinsmen celebrate Gbenga Elegbeleye

Success is like a fragranced flower that gladdens the heart and enchants ones senses, while failure is a repellant that keeps everyone away. No wonder success has been universally applauded as one with many children, while failure is an orphan.

Former Director General of the National Sports Commission, Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye, did not just dream about success, he hungered for it and chased after it until it began to do his biddings. Currently, he is enjoying all the attention attracted by his achievements. If any anyone had any doubt about the feats attained by Elegbeleye, a visit to the MKO Gardens, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, last Sunday would erase it. It was a day the Ikare-Akoko Club 2000 hosted him in celebration of his outstanding career in public office. It was a well packaged event where many powerful indigenes of Ikare-Akoko had a field day.

Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye used the opportunity to inform his kinsmen about his gubernatorial ambition in Ondo State in November and sought their support in helping him to get to the state’s seat of power.

  • Gbenga Elegbeleye bags chieftaincy title

The difference between ordinary and extra-ordinary is said to be the little extra effort you put into life. Hon. Gbenga Otolorin  Elegbeleye is extraordinary in his dealings, not only because he possesses that little extra, but because he exhibits a perfect blend of perseverance and hard work.

In all fairness, Hon Elegbeleye’s achievements in the nation’s political space cannot be wished away with a wave of the hand.  He rose to prominence many years ago as the youngest local government chairman in Ondo State, before moving to become the Chairman of Ondo State Waste Management Authority. After his election into the House of Representatives, he was appointed the Deputy Chairman House Committee on Sports and capped it all when he was appointed the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC).

Now, his kinsmen have decided to honour a son who has made them proud in his service to fatherland.  His Royal Majesty, Oba Akadiri Momoh, the Olukare of Ikareland and the Olukare in Council are honouring Hon. Elegbeleye as the new Otunba of Ikareland.

It is important to note that prior to this time, Elegbeleye has never taken any traditional title from any part of the world in his life. Little wonder the title is said to be dear and sacred to his people. Moreover, the title has only been conferred on one person in the history of Ikare kingdom- the late Otunba Mohammed Jobi-Fele. The event will hold next Saturday, at the Olukare’s palace, Ikare Akoko, Ondo State. According to the programmes of events, the reception will hold at Victory College, Ikare, while Bonsue Fuji crooner, Adewale Ayuba, will entertain the A-list guests.

St. Valentine’s Day is over. And following the celebration with varying display of love and affection, citizens are back to their normal routines. While to many, the day dedicated to celebrating love has become history, many less-privileged who benefitted from the benevolence of Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, the Director General of Sports Commission would not forget in a hurry how the philanthropic politician turned their otherwise bleak season of love into a bright one. Elegbeleye, the former deputy chairman of House Committee on Sports, used the day of love for what it truly was.

In the spirit of love and sharing, he gave food items and cash to the less-privileged in celebration of St Valentine’s Day. His service to humanity is not new, and he has given many years of service in government, from being the youngest local government chairman, to service in the House of Representatives and currently the DG of Sports.
