  • Gbenga James in trying times

In the business world, what is bad news for one is good news for the other. Gbenga James’ competitors are rejoicing as he struggles to get out of his current travails. On account of his indebtedness to Assets Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON), the Ibadan office of the CEO of Avian Specialties was last weekend sealed off by officials of the institution. The businessman was said to have owed about N3 billion, being the debt bought over from Union Bank.

The matter got even worrisome when Gbenga James, whose poultry business ranks among the biggest in the country, was arrested. In a move that justifies the saying that marriage is for better and for worse, his wife was also arrested.

According to those in the know, AMCON and the Nigeria police last weekend stormed the Avian Specialty office in Challenge, Ibadan and carted away the company’s property, before they later sealed up the building. The one-hour operation was said to have been led by one Saheed Fasanya, with help from armed policemen. Onlookers had their fill as AMCON agents allegedly stormed the Iyaganku home of the businessman, where they also carted his Bentley and some other luxury cars in his garage. It was gathered that AMCON was also facilitating the process towards taking over all his properties.

It will be recalled that a few years ago, he had a raw deal with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over a poultry project he handled for the Ekiti State Government, through which the sum of N800 million was alleged to have been misappropriated.

  • For Gbenga James, it’s once bitten, twice shy

Life is not any different from weather. Not only is it unpredictable, it shows a new side of an individual every day. The unpredictable nature of life has shocked many just the way it has played out in the life of Gbenga James. At a time many expected the once close associate of Governor Ayodele Fayose to team up with his friend in order to realise his governorship ambition, he simply disappeared from the social radar, causing many to wonder what he is up to.

Some years ago, James, the owner of Biological Concept and former business partner of Fayose, got entangled in the web of a corruption allegation levied against him and his friend. So peeved was the political elite of Ekiti State that they had to mount a serious pressure on the duo until former President Olusegun Obasanjo ensured the ouster of Fayose as Ekiti governor.

There were insinuations later to the effect that James betrayed Fayose and gave him out to the EFCC after the latter had helped him as a friend with a poultry project contract. Since he was left off the hook, he has now recoiled into his shell, leaving politics to those who have the heart for it.

  • Gbenga James still off radar

No man has absolute control over his life. Providence sometimes takes over the wheels of a man’s life and steers it in the direction it desires. The best way to deal with such situations is to make cold glasses of lemonades out of lemons.

That was the case with Gbenga James, the owner of Biological Concept and former business partner of Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, who got entangled in the web of alleged corruption levelled against him and Fayose over a poultry contract. So peeved were the political elites of Ekiti State that they mounted pressure on the duo and caused the then President Olusegun Obasanjo to personally oversee the ouster of Fayose as Ekiti State governor.

Although Fayose has since bounced back as the governor of Ekiti State, the poultry contract controversy is still trailing him, while Gbenga has since recoiled into his cocoon.

  • Gbenga James lies low

There are times when providence takes charge of the affairs of man and dictates his course of action. At such times, the best a man can do is to accept whatever fate has decided to drop on his laps.

Such was the case with Gbenga James, the owner of Biological Concept and former business partner of Governor Ayodele Fayose, when he got entangled in the web of corruption allegation the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission levelled against him and Fayose. So peeved were the political elites of Ekiti State that they had to mount serious pressure on the duo and caused the then President Olusegun Obasanjo to personally supervise the ouster of Fayose as Ekiti governor.

Although Fayose has since bounced back as the governor of Ekiti State, controversy is still trailing his emergence as Ekiti helmsman the second time.  Gbenga, on the other hand, has recoiled into his shell since he was let off the hook.

  • Gbenga James still anonymous

Not a few people are wondering if Gbenga James’ disappearance from public glare does not have to do with his EFCC-inspired court case. For some unknown reasons, he has chosen to stay indoors.

Before he recoiled into his shell, Gbenga James, once a close friend of former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, was one of the big boys who determined the direction of social activities in Ibadan. It is a matter of public knowledge that he enjoyed good rapport with the Afao-born former governor.

And Gbenga was not just a governor’s friend; his influence was so pervasive that one would think that he was next to Fayose in the scheme of things in Ekiti State. He flaunted his closeness to Fayose to warrant caution from friends and reprobation from foes. But all that changed when the dreadful former boss of EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, beamed his searchlight on the Fayose administration in which Gbenga, a big time farmer, was very active.

Gbenga, who did not enjoy immunity like Fayose was arrested over some suspicious deals he had with the former governor in respect of a poultry project the administration undertook. The infamous “poultry project” became the basis for the misfortune that later befell him and his governor friend.

Gbenga has since been keeping a low profile.
