Genevieve Nnaji slams social media user over marriage advice to Igbo men

Nollywood icon Genevieve Nnaji has reacted to comments made by a social media user advising Igbo men to stop marrying Igbo women and instead seek wives from other African countries.

The suggestion, which followed a viral photo of a Rwandan woman reportedly engaged to an Anambra man, implied that Igbo women are prone to making false accusations.

The user claimed men from the south-east would be better off looking to East African countries, particularly Rwanda, for marriage partners.

Nnaji, who has long been regarded as one of Nollywood’s most respected voices, joined many Nigerians in responding to the controversial post, which has sparked debates on stereotypes, cultural pride and respect within relationships.

The user wrote, “Dear Igbo men, instead of marrying an Igbo woman who’ll falsely accuse you of r4ping your daughter, better look outside for a wife.

“Go to East Africa, especially Rwanda, and pick a damsel. They’re all over social media, and you can link up with them.”

Genevieve countered that the advice reflects a lack of accountability and an unfair stereotype of Igbo women.

She wrote, “In other words, instead of checking yourself and taking accountability, go for the unsuspecting and carry on with your evil. Got it.”

When challenged, she added that just as women can’t identify abusive men, men shouldn’t generalise about Igbo women, saying “Not all women.”

She added, “The same way a woman can’t tell an abusive man apart from a good one is the same way you shouldn’t say avoid all Igbo women. ‘Not all women.”

How Hollywood made me feel like a commodity – Genevieve Nnaji

Prominent actress Genevieve Nnaji has shared her experience seeking partnerships in Hollywood after the success of her 2018 film, LionHeart.

Despite her achievements, Nnaji said she realised that she was viewed as a commodity, with Hollywood interested in exploiting her talent and African stories for their benefit.

She noted that they wanted to use her to tell their own stories, rather than authentic African stories.

“For the first time, I realised I was a commodity. I thought, you know, given what I had done with Lionheart, and all of that, I was going to have an opportunity to do more. Getting there and having the kind of support that obviously CANEX is bringing on board, but I thought I could find it in Hollywood. That was not quite the case.

“They wanted what I had but for their benefit. It was all about their story. It was all about how, even if it was our story, I could make it more authentic to their own understanding of whatever Africa is because they did have a lot of literature in their archives”, she said.

The actress, who was on a panel at the 2024 AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum/Afreximbank Annual Meetings and has benefited from Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX), an Afreximbank programme through which it provides support, including financial support for trade and investment in Africa’s creative sector, expressed her passion for building a strong Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, that can rival Hollywood.

According to her, she chose to stay in Nigeria and contribute to the industry’s growth rather than pursuing opportunities in Hollywood.

The actress believes that Africa has the potential to own a thriving industry that tells its own stories, and she is committed to being part of that journey.

“But I am Nollywood. I could have gone to Hollywood a long time if I wanted to. But I had a dream to build an industry in Nigeria that could rival it. That’s because I’ve always believed in that. I have always believed that we were capable of actually owning an industry like that, that told our story for our people. I wanted that. I respect what Hollywood is doing. I respect what Bollywood is doing and I felt like Nollywood had an equal chance at it.

“So when I found it wasn’t quite what they had in mind I was like I’m just going to wait this out and the Covid happened and the worlds switched at that point and Africa sort of became it,” she added

  • Don’t be fooled by netizens about ageing backwards, DeeOne tells Genevieve Nnaji

Don’t be fooled by netizens about ageing backwards, DeeOne tells Genevieve Nnaji

Former Big Brother Naija housemate and comedian, DeeOne, has voiced his disagreement with the popular opinion regarding actress Genevieve Nnaji’s ‘ageless’ beauty.

DeeOne bluntly stated that Genevieve is showing her age and should start taking on grandmother roles in movies.

The reality TV star made these remarks while reacting to a trending video of Genevieve enjoying Ayra Starr’s album, ’21’.

He argued that Nigerians are misleading Genevieve with their compliments, insisting that she is not ageing in reverse as many claim.

DeeOne expressed his views on Instagram, challenging the actress to share pictures of the back of her hands and legs to prove his point.

According to him: “Every time Genevieve’s video or picture comes out, people always say she looks so young. That’s a lie. If you want to know whether she is old or young, it’s not by face through pictures or video where they usually wear makeup, it is either by the back of her hand or the backs of her legs.

“If Genevieve is truly young as claimed, I challenge her to post the back of her hands and legs. Madam Genevieve, you look your age. Don’t let them deceive you. Nigerians are deceitful.

“You look your age and there is nothing wrong with it. I am already growing grey hair. There’s nothing wrong with old age. Embrace it. Take up elderly people’s roles in movies. Play mother and grandmother roles.”
