N600m slush fund: Bafarawa queries EFCC over non-trial of Odili, Ahmadu Ali, George, others

A former Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, is angry with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly singling him out for trial over the N600million cash given to six leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by a former Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda.

The ex-governor wants to know why Chief Jim Nwobodo (South-East), Dr. Peter Odili (South-South), Chief Bode George (South-West), Alhaji Yerima Abdullahi (North-East), and Col. Ahmadu Ali (North-Central) who allegedly shared in the money are excluded from trial.

He says each of the presidential election contact chairmen for the six (6) geo-political zones was given N100million.

Bafarawa, in a petition on his ordeal to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN) alleged selective corruption prosecution against “my son, Sagir Attahiru and I by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).”

He said the action of the anti-corruption agency “leaves little to be desired and is discriminatory against me.”

Continuing, he said: “In 2015, I alongside five (5) other persons  was among other presidential election contact Chairmen for the six (6) geo-political zones in the country.

“The six persons appointed were Sen. Jim Nwobodo (South-East), Dr Peter Odili (South-South), Chief Bode George (South-West), Alhaji Yerima Abdullahi (North-East), Col. Ahmadu Ali (North-Central) and myself (North-West). We were given N100million  each by a former Minister State Finance, Bashir Yuguda and were directed to disburse same to the state elders of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in our zones for campaign expenses.

“We were not given any information that it was Federal Government money but since this happened after PDP has raised money for campaign I believed it was from it that this money was given to us.

“l am Nigerian citizen and a senior at that. That manner in which the EFCC has persecuted me in the name of prosecution is a cause for alarm. May I note that I am not saying I am above the law but I think it is only conscionable for me to be tried for whatever offence I am accused of committing within the ambits of the law instead of the media trial I have been subjected to in the hands of EFCC.

“What is the rationale to single me out for prosecution while others in the same category with me are left not prosecuted. What is the rationale of EFCC to be prosecuting me without investigating and prosecuting those who are the beneficiaries of the funds.

“In a civilized society, I ought to be a witness to the prosecution to enable the government get its money back from the people whom I paid assuming it is Federal Government’s money.

“I urge the Honourable Attorney General and Minister of Justice to conduct an investigation into this complaint and make the necessary recommendations so that my family will stop being dragged in the mud and to enable the cause of Justice have its proper way.”

Bafarawa, who released the list of those he gave his own share of N100million, said he added extra N200, 000 to what was disbursed to him by the ex-Minister.

He said: “On my part, I disbursed the said money to PDP Chairmen in my zone with even an additional N200, 000 totaling N1.2million only between January 12, 2015 and March 17,2015. Upon which I am expecting a refund before my arrest.”

    He listed the beneficiaries as:

    1. Kebbi State: Abdullahi Yelwa—0050222873 – Access Bank Mobile No. 08037882327 (N15,600,000.00) 12/1/2015 (Transfer)

“It is thus baffling to see that l was the only one who was arrested and being prosecuted for an offence I did not commit. The money l got was meant for the purpose of the 2015 elections and same was utilized for the purpose.

“The EFCC did not deem it fit to invite the persons to which I disbursed the money to. Just like the others, I am an agent of a disclosed principal but due to whatever personal scores the EFCC has with me, I am the only one who has been made a subject of ridicule by the EFCC.

“You will recall that a chieftain in Ondo State, Chief Olu Falae, also got some certain amount of money but the EFCC has not deemed it fit to prosecute him. What made my case worse is the fact that I did not spend a kobo for myself in the said sum of money but disbursed it as instructed.

“ The Gestapo manner with which the EFCC operatives stormed my apartment at 6.00am on 19th November, 2015 at Usuma Street Maitama, Abuja is one which would create an impression that l have committed a capital offence even when l have not committed any. The operatives neither presented a warrant of arrest nor a court order giving them authority to arrest me.

“Fortunately, l was not in the country when this happened but through phone call l caused my lawyers, Lateef Fagbemi SAN & CO to write a letter to the EFCC on the 25th November, 2015 informing them of my intention to honour the invitation on my return to the country while also protesting the illegal invasion of my house.

“The letter is hereto attached as Annexure B for your attention. Upon my return to the country, | honoured the EFCC invitation on 1St of December, 2015 and l was detained for 3 weeks at the EFCC office before I was transferred to Kuje Prisons on the 22nd December, 2015, l was however released on bail.

“My travails in the hands of the EFCC continued despite the fact that I stated to the EFCC quite categorically how I disbursed the money in question on the instruction of the party. I gave EFCC names of persons I gave the money to, their bank account numbers (to which I disbursed the money) and their addresses.

“What I expected and what would have been the right thing to do was to invite the persons whom I disbursed the money to confirm the veracity or otherwise of my statement.

“The attempt by the EFCC to smear my hard earned name has been extended to my son, Sagir Attahiru, who disbursed funds (N4.5billion) given to him by NSA office only based on the instruction of the NSA.

“He was arrested by the EFCC on the 24th November, 2015 and detained for over a month and four days both at EFCC cell and Kuje Prisons before his release on bail on 28th December, 2015.

“My son, Sagir, only acted on the express instruction of Col. Dasuki as can be seen from the document which he has submitted to the EFCC.”

  • George was ‘ere

He is no doubt a phenomenon. No, not the new Liberian President-elect, George Weah; Hardball refers here, to the man in the synagogue, Prophet T.B. Joshua.

This is not to downgrade the stature of Weah or the magnitude of his election victory, again, no. It is to report that love him or hate him, Prophet TB must have something going for him. Consider that last October, after the stalemate in the Liberian election, Weah, one of the contestants, had raced to Lagos Nigeria.

He had no other destination than Prophet TB’s the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN). Do you, dear reader, need an interpreter to know why Weah was visiting TB? While addressing his august visitors during his homily, the man of God let it be known that even Weah’s co-contestant and incumbent Vice-President, Joseph Boakai had also requested a meeting with him.

But here is how Prophet TB handled what you might consider a conflicting schedule. First he did not tell his audience whether he eventually granted audience to Boakai but he had this to say to the Weah crowd:

“My brother is here today because he loves his country and wants God’s choice for his country. He is not here to impose himself. What does God say about his country, Liberia? That is why he is here.

“We are not herbalists or witch-doctors; we are people of God. God’s choice is our choice. We cannot pray against God’s will,” Prophet TB noted as Weah nodded in agreement.

Some would say Prophet TB has just ‘conquered’ another land. It is said that he does not plan churches but plant instead, heads of government.

The late John Atta Mills, President of Ghana was so taken to TB he would have handed half his territory if he could. He thought TB divined his ascendancy. So was former Malawi President, Joyce Banda. She practically lived in the Synagogue during her time. She was sure Prophet TB healed her husband of stroke.

Tanzania’s President, John Magufuli is a staunch member of SCOAN. Zambia’s former President Fredrick Chiluba came visiting ; so was Morgan Tsvangirai (Zimbabwe); Winnie Mandela, Zulu King, Zwelithini, name them.

In a good year, Prophet TB gets visited in his downtown Lagos sanctuary by more heads of state and foreign dignitaries than most African leaders. Who can count the sports stars and celebrities seeking the face of this Prophet?

Yet Prophet TB who fills national stadia’s in South America during his outreaches is much vilified at home. He is actually considered evil by some.

While he is quick to tell you that Jesus was also loathed at home, Hardball must remind once again that his latest friend is President George Weah of Liberia.

George preaches unity as Lagos endorses him

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmanship aspirant Chief Olabode George has pledged to unite all rival groups within the party and enthrone peace and harmony if he is elected at the convention on Saturday.

He told Ogun State delegates other stakeholders at the Park-Inn Hotel, Abeokuta, Ogun State yesterday.

He said he would ensure that all litigations involving the party were amicably resolved as the party could not afford to waste the little time between the convention and the 2019 elections on unnecessary infighting and other distractions.

He noted that PDP lost Ogun State to the All Progressives Congress (APC) because of disunity adding that the time had come for all to come together and take the state back.

George had also preached the same message of unity and harmony in Ekiti, Ondo, Osun and Oyo states which he visited at the weekend.

He assured party stakeholders that unity, peace and harmony were top on his agenda because they are necessary ingredients for a strong and formidable platform to win elections.

In Ekiti state, he visited Governor Ayo Fayose where he commended him for his good governance.

Governor Fayose commended George for his invaluable contributions to the party in the South-West and nationally.

The Lagos State Chapter on Sunday endorsed him.

State Chairman Dr. Moshood Salvador gave the certification at a feedback meeting between George and members of the party.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that George had been on campaign in the Southern states of the country to seek support for votes ahead of the National Convention.

Salvador said: “ On behalf of Lagos PDP, we must vote for Chief Bode George come Dec. 9;  the South west is the rightful region to have the chairman of our great party.

“In the last dispensation, Ekiti produced the Vice- Chairman while Osun and Oyo states took the highest office. It is only Lagos that is left and what we want is the chairman.

“The South-east and the South-south have produced a chairman before that is why it is our turn to have the chairman of PDP,’’ he said.

George assured members that if given the opportunity to serve, he would re-establish the culture and tradition put in place by the founding fathers of  the PDP.

“If I am given the opportunity, I will not be new to the management of this party because the party’s constitution is not going to be new to me; I know its provisions as I know the back of my hand.”

  • How to avert rancorous convention, by George

How to avert rancorous convention, by George

THE Bode George Campaign Organisation has condemned the role the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee is playing, as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prepares for its national convention, saying it is untidy and disturbing.

A statement by the Director of the organisation, Alhaji Ibrahim Aliu, called on Makarfi to resign, because his actions are spurred by his personal ambition of contesting for the presidency in 2019. The statement said Makarfi is with a particular aspirant in the Southsouth to distort the process, muddle equity and invariably destroy the democratic process for ‘transient personal gains’.

It reads in part: “Makarfi’s action, to put it mildly, is sickening, untoward, blatantly tendentious , totally stripped of the typical moral high ground that often defines a well meaning, God- fearing arbitrating leadership.

“Everywhere you look, Makarfi is planting the agents of his favourite Southsouth candidate to stage-manage warped and skewed congresses in an undisguised mockery of all the normative patterns of our founding fathers whose enduring forte about equity, justice and fairness is now being flung into the gutter. In a way, Makarfi is evidently resolved to repeat the farcical malady that characterised the debacle in Port Harcourt last year.

“We have equally resolved that we will not be led along this ruinous path again. Never! For the sake of propriety, for the sake of all that is good and meaningful, for the sake of equitable balance and moral appropriateness, we strongly advise Senator Makarfi to resign his position forthwith, because he has been severely compromised.

“He can no longer play the role of a neutral arbiter who stands far above the fray. He is already tarred and soiled in the muddy waters of partisan prejudice. Makarfi should now do the most honorable thing by walking away and face his ambition squarely. He cannot use a privilege non-elective position to wangle undue advantages to his own side. It is patently unacceptable.

“We need to redeem our party by being faithful to the great ideals of our founding fathers. We really believe that elders of the party across the nation should summon an emergency summit to deliberate on the right way to restrategise our party and rectify the wrongs on the ground. All the elders across the zones must take it as a priority that this party can only be redeemed and restore to its winning ways when we are all sincere, genuine, and anchored on the path of salvaging righteousness.”

    George seeks PDP aspirants debate

A leading aspirant for PDP national chairman Chief Olabode George has challenged other contestants for an open debate on their vision, agenda and motive for gunning for the party’s prime office.

He described himself as knowledgeable about the culture and practices of the party, saying whoever wanted to lead the party should not be afraid of a public debate that will showcase their grasp of the norms and traditional values of the party.

George told delegates from  Kebbi, Zamfara and Sokoto states about the need for micro zoning of the national chairmanship position, he insisted that the fundamental resolve of the founding  founders was to promote equity and balance in the distribution of the party offices.

George praised the Sultan of Sokoto Sa’ad Abubakar for his patriotism and his instinctive embrace of all Nigerians regardless of faith or tribe.

George was praised by the North West Coordinator of his campaign Organization, Alhaji Bakori, for his selfless service to the party and his consistency.

Alhaji  Bakori described George as the most experienced among the contestants.

George was at the Katsina State PDP secretariat yesterday.

Director General of the Bode George Campaign Organisation  Alhaji Aliu K. Ibrahim, described this as payback time for George having worked selflessly as the Director General of Yar’Adua/Jonathan Presidential Campaign.

George said the convention itself must reinforce all sense of fairness, civility and equitable largeness.  He enjoined  delegates to be courageous and open-minded.

George said this is the second chance for the party to redeem itself and rectify the errors of the past.

He promised to be back in Katsina state which has 110 delegates,  the largest batch in the nation because of the vivid hospitality and embrace with which he was received by the leaders and delegates.

    PDP chairmanship: George woos Northeast

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairmanship aspirant Chief Olabode George has urged Northeast delegates to vote for him at the national convention holding in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), next month.

His campaign train rolled into Gombe State last week, where he met with zonal party leaders, led by Ambassador Emmanuel Joah.

Joah praised the courage and resilience of the chairmanship aspirant, describing him as a loyal, workaholic and committed founding chieftain.

He said the party will benefit from his experience, urging delegates from the zone to vote wisely.

Joah said: “Chief George a man of vision and vibrant resolute energy. He is a man of strong integrity and demonstrated knowledge of the workings and the norms of the party.

“These challenging times require someone of strong and determined vision like Chief George, who can repair the broken ramparts of the party.”

Joah said the convention will mark a turning point in the life of the oppoition party and lay the foundation for its renewal and survival.

  • How PDP can regain power, by George

How PDP can regain power, by George

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairmanship aspirant Chief Olabode George yesterday said that the next convention of the party will determine its future, urging delegates to elect a competent and experience person to lead the party.

The party elder said he is on a rescue mission, adding that, if he becomes the chairman, the platform will avoid the past mistakes which heralded its electoral misfortune in the 2015 polls.

George called for debate on zoning, saying that it cannot be jettisoned at the convention.

He said: “I am a respecter of zoning. Let’s debate zoning. Knowledge is power.”

The former military governor of old Ondo State said the competition for the position should not be vicious, adding that it should be handled in a civilised manner. He said party leaders should resolve to build a formidable party that will be long lasting after the elders have left the stage.

However, George described himself as the most experienced chieftain to do the job.

He said although former governors and ministers are also vying for the position, managing a party is different from managing a state or a ministry.

He said: “I am a trusted and trusted leader; I have experience, exposure and the ability to steer the party to victory in 2019, by the grace of God. You don’t ask a goat to go and meet a lion. I have worked at the national secretariat for 10 years. I know the written and unwritten constitutions of the PDP.”

George spoke with reporters in Lagos on his ambition and preparations for the December convention, saying that it will be a defining moment for the opposition party.

Other contenders are former Lagos State PDP governorship candidate Mr. Jimi Agbaje, former Education Minister Prof. Tunde Adeniran, former Sports and Special Duties Minister Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, former Oyo State Governor Rashidi Ladoja, his Ogun State counterpart, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Chief Raymond Dokpesi and Chief Uche Secondus.

The former national deputy chairman advised party leaders and other stakeholders to sustain the culture of zoning and micro-zoning, which have been the hallmarks of the platform since its creation.

He said, if zoning is upheld, the chairmanship should be zoned to the Southwest, adding that, it micro-zoning is also upheld, the slot should go to the Lagos/Ogun sub-zone of the Southwest.

George reflected on the popular feeling that he cannot be controlled by the PDP governors, saying that he cannot act as an over-lord, if given the job.

He said: “I cannot be an over-lord. I want to manage the party to win the next presidential election. What I will do is to evolve a collegiate leadership, where the contributions of the various leaders and stakeholders will lead to the decisions that will be taken by the leadership.”

George, a retired commodore, said there is a consensus of opinion that impunity, imposition of candidates, dictatorship and lack of fairness and justice should end in the party, assuring that these pitfalls and past mistakes will be avoided, if he becomes the chairman.

The aspirant sad he was excited at the willingness of aggrieved defectors from the party to return to the fold, following his entry into the chairmanship race.

He said: “I was happy to see our old members who had left the party coming back to meetings when they learnt that I was in the race. It was like a reunion. Across the six geo-political zones, I have been received with warmth and enthusiasm. Many will return, if the leadership is ready to restore fairness. Our challenge is to maintain unity and oneness in the PDP.

“I am on a rescue mission, having served for 10 years at the party secretariat. I was the national vice chairman, deputy chairman (South) and deputy chairman for the overall country. PDP must get it right at the convention. We have no villa to run to now. The PDP is wobbling now and we need to stabilize it.”

George acknowledged the quest for all manners of endorsement by other aspirants, saying that he is not after sectional endorsement, but collective endorsement of members.

He said to restore the lost glory of the party, its leaders should go back to basics and affirm both its written and unwritten constitutions.

George said zoning has been the strength of the PDP from the beginning, recalling that it has given the members from the six zones a sense of belonging.

He stressed: “I know the written and unwritten constitutions of the PDP. Zoning based on geo-political zones is not in the constitution of Nigeria. But, that is what gives the zones a sense of belonging. The PDP has identified the six positions of the president, vice president, Senate President, Speaker of House of Representatives, Secretary to Government and PDP chairman. Three are zoned to the North, three are zoned to the South. That means no zone is left out.

“The presidency has been zoned to the North. The chairman has been zoned to the South. But, we must also micro-zone. Micro-zoning is to give members a sense of belonging. I am appealing to the Southsouth to concede the position of chairman to the Southwest. The Southeast and Southsouth had made use of their chances before, but the Southwest has not occupied the position.”

•Reps PDP Caucus to meet aspirants

Aspirants seeking the position of national chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have intensified lobbying by taking their campaign to the doorsteps of prominent chieftains of the party for endorsement.

The aspirants have also made inroads into the various delegate blocs across the six geopolitical zones with the view to gaining advantage over one another.

Leading the vote-chasing shuttles are Prof Tunde Adeniran, Chief Olabode George and Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, who have visited the homes of a good number of party elders in the past few days.

Receiving Adeniran in his Abuja residence at the weekend, one of the founding fathers of the PDP, Mallam Adamu Ciroma, described the former Education minister as a man that can be trusted with the job.

Ciroma said he could safely judge Adeniran by his pedigree, track-record of discipline, integrity and loyalty to the course of the party and the country at large.

The elder statesman said he had followed the politician’s career with keen interest, since his days as a lecturer at the University of Ibadan.

He observed that Adeniran distinguished himself when he served as Secretary of the Mass Mobilisation for Self-Reliance, Social Justice and Economic Recovery (MAMSER) in the 1990s.

Those that accompanied Adeniran on the visit to Ciroma included Prof. Jerry Gana, Ibrahim Mantu, Zainab Maina, Tom Aguiyi-Ironsi among others.

On the other hand, George also met with a number of chairmen of state chapters of the PDP at the Druz Resort and Events Centre in Abuja at the weekend.

Describing the meeting as part of his nationwide consultations with party stakeholders, George informed the gathering of his desire to create a special platform for the purpose of mentoring the youths for leadership positions.

According to him, it has become imperative for the older generation to initiate a credible leadership succession line for the younger generation of leaders to step in.

On his part, Prof Adedoja visited former President Ibrahim Babangida, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and many others as part of his consultations.

Adedoja, at the weekend, met with key party stakeholders from the Northcentral geopolitical zone and held discussions with interest groups from the Northeast and the Northwest.

As part of his campaign strategy to sell his candidacy to delegates of Northern extraction, Adedoja has resorted to communicating with his targets in Hausa language.

The House of Representatives’ PDP Caucus is set to meet the last batch of the party’s chairmanship aspirants tomorrow.

The caucus, which met with the first batch on Wednesday, is to meet with former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel, former Oyo State Governor Rasheed Ladoja, former Minister of Sports and Youth Development Prof. Taoheed Adedoja and former PDP Lagos State governorship candidate Jimi Agbaje.
