Dele Alli targets Gerrard’s feat in Germany

MK Dons midfielder Dele  Alli has spoken of his desire to emulate his childhood idol Steven Gerrard by scoring against Germany tonight.

The 18-year-old Nigerian-born England youth international who has been earning plaudits for his club performances in recent months, is set to travel with the England U-19 side to take on their German counterparts in Oberhausen.

Alli, who has yet to score for the Three Lions told TheFA.com: “I’ve had a few chances when I’ve been playing for England and I feel like they’ve been easy chances, but I’ve just been messing up so I can’t wait to get off the mark.

“I am actually a Liverpool fan and Gerrard is someone I look up to massively. If the ball drops for me on Monday like it did for him against Germany, I’m smashing it!”

Alli, who was referring to England’s 5-1 win against the four-time World Cup winners back in 2001, has reportedly been on the radar of Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Bayern Munich during the last transfer window.

Suarez returns to Liverpool with a gift for Gerrard

Luis Suarez made a surprise appearance at Liverpool’s Melwood training complex on Deadline Day – but he was only there to bid farewell to his former team-mates.

The Uruguay striker, who made a £75m move to Barcelona earlier this summer, is understood to have returned to Liverpool’s training ground to collect some belongings.

But he also brought a gift with him for his friend and former team-mate, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

A photo on Gerrard’s Instagram account shows him and the striker smiling and holding up a signed ‘Suarez 9’ Barcelona shirt.

The image was accompanied by a message reading: “He is back bearing gifts. Emotional saying goodbye to the main man this morning. Best wishes to a phenomenal player.”

Another image later appeared on Suarez’s Twitter account, showing him in a group pose with Gerrard and Liverpool defenders Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan.

The accompanying words read: “Today I could say goodbye to some friends, it was exciting to remember the good moments that we lived together.

“Thank you for all the joy you gave me!!!!! Great picture with @glen—johnson, @jon—flan93 and Steven Gerrard!!!!”

  • England will miss Gerrard —Hodgson

ManagerRoy Hodgson says England will miss Steven Gerrard’s “leadership qualities” following his captain’s retirement from international football.

“He was a tremendous captain and an exceptional role model for everyone who was fortunate to come into contact with him ”

The Liverpool midfielder, 34, won 114 caps and scored 21 goals, representing his country at six major tournaments.

“We shall miss his leadership qualities as we look ahead to qualification with a youthful group,” Hodgson said.

“He is an incredible man and fantastic footballer who we have all been blessed to see in an England shirt so often.”

Gerrard, whom Hodgson also managed at Anfield, will now assume a “high profile” ambassadorial role with the Football Association.

Hodgson added: “It is never by coincidence that people reach such a staggering figure as 114 caps. It is a mark of his wonderful talent allied to a huge drive and determination to live up to the highest standard.

“He is not only a player to bring crowds to their feet with moments of brilliance; he was a tremendous captain and an exceptional role model for everyone who was fortunate to come into contact with him.

“I wish him all the best in the future, although I know I can count on his continued support and influence as a helpful presence moving forward.”

Former England striker and BBC Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker led the tributes to the midfielder, tweeting:  “Steven Gerrard has retired from international football. He’s been a wonderful servant to his country. A great player who always gave all.”

  • Hazard, Liverpool trio listed for PFA award

Hazard, Liverpool trio listed for PFA award

Liverpool trio Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge are on the shortlist for the English Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) player of the year award, Reuters reports.

Striking duo Suarez and Sturridge have scored 49 league goals between them this season, with Uruguay international Suarez leading the Premier League scoring charts with 29 goals for Brendan Rodgers’ table-topping side.

Captain Gerrard, 33, has contributed 13 league goals and 11 assists for Liverpool this season with the England midfielder aiming to lift his first Premier League title.

With four games left Liverpool has a two-point advantage over second-placed Chelsea, whose Belgium forward Eden Hazard is also among the nominations for player of the year with Ivorian Yaya Toure (Manchester City) and Adam Lallana (Southampton).

Sturridge and Hazard were also shortlisted for young player of the year, the PFA said on its website (www.thepfa.com), along with Liverpool’s England winger Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley (Everton), Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal) and Luke Shaw (Southampton).

Gareth Bale won both awards last year playing for Tottenham Hotspur before his world record transfer to Real Madrid in the close season following in the footsteps of Andy Gray (1977) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2007) who also achieved that feat.

  • Alonso: Gerrard good enough for Spain team

Alonso: Gerrard good enough for Spain team

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has hailed Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard, arguing that, had he been born in Spain, the England captain would have been worthy of a place in the world champions’ team.

The Reds hero marked his 600th game for the Merseyside club on Sunday, helping Brendan Rodgers’ side to a 1-1 draw with Newcastle at Anfield.

And Alonso, who played alongside the Huyton-born midfielder for a five-year period between 2004 and 2009, believes that Gerrard has the quality to match the likes of Andres Iniesta, Xavi and himself.

“Absolutely, there’s no doubt,” he told Real Madrid TV. “He could play in any national team in the world because he has so many great qualities.

“He is flexible. He can play at the English pace or he can associate with the ball very well. He is a very intelligent player, so he could play anywhere – not just any national team but any club in the world. But he has been a one-club man and that’s something I really admire.”

The 30-year-old also revealed how influential Gerrard has been on his own career, explaining that the way he conducted himself both on and off the pitch left a lasting impression.

“We are great friends and we still keep in touch. He was a great influence to me,” Alonso continued.

“When I arrived at Liverpool I was 22 and he was the captain, he was the main man at the club.

“For me he was a reference, the way he behaved with his teammates and with the supporters as well. I learned a lot from him.

“As a captain he has embraced all the responsibilities of being a captain and he’s the perfect captain for Liverpool, not just because he’s a great player but because he represents the values of the club.”

Alonso went on to insist that Gerrard’s failure to clinch a league title with Liverpool will not detract from his status as a legend in the game, declaring: “He’ll absolutely be remembered as one of the greats. For me he is already one of the greats.

“His name and Liverpool’s name will always be linked and he’s a great representative of the club and the city.

“There are so many things. He is so inspirational. In the key moments he has that different thing, that spark that is difficult to define.

“He has achieved great things and in very important moments he has been the man for Liverpool. We had great European nights and he was the main man. For me he’s a great player. Hopefully he will reach 700 games.”

  • Gerrard: Suarez thrives on stick

    Gerrard: Suarez thrives on stick

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has warned Premier League rivals if they try to wind up Luis Suarez they should be prepared for a backlash.

The 25-year-old striker was at the centre of most things in Sunday’s 2-2 draw in the 219th Merseyside derby, scoring once, seeing a cross-shot deflected in and having an added-time winner wrongly ruled out for offside.

Suarez also produced a humorous response to Everton manager David Moyes by diving at the Scot’s feet after his assertion the 25-year-old was turning people off football by going to ground too easily.

Gerrard said the South American seemed to thrive on the criticism.

“Luis Suarez was fantastic for us again,” said the midfielder.

“He doesn’t need David Moyes to fire him up. But if people want to try to get in Luis’ head and wind him up then it’s the wrong thing to do.

“You saw from yesterday’s evidence that it seems to inspire him rather than go against him.

“I can’t control what he does when he scores a goal, I was just happy to see it (Suarez’s deflected strike for the opener) hit the back of the net.”

Gerrard also criticised Phil Neville after the Everton captain was booked for diving in the first half.

In his post-match press conference Moyes said he had spoken to Neville about it and the player himself admitted his actions were wrong.

“With what he said about Luis Suarez before, David Moyes was trying to get in the referee’s head, which is fine, that’s all part of the game stuff like that,” said Gerrard.

“But if that’s the case you don’t expect your captain to dive like that.

“I think Phil Neville badly let his manager down.

“His manager did every paper, every radio station and every TV channel talking about Luis Suarez and then his captain, who is meant to be setting an example, blatantly dives.

“If David Moyes is a real man and a real manager, which I think he is, then he will be speaking to Phil Neville about his dive.”

Gerrard also reserved some criticism for the officials after a couple of key decisions went against Liverpool.

“I’ve seen it (Suarez’s disallowed goal) again and we can feel sorry ourselves because it was a clear goal,” said the England captain.

“We should have taken away the three points rather than just one.

“There is no offside and it’s difficult for me to explain it. The only person who can explain it is the linesman.

“I asked him after the game if it was offside and he said ‘I think so’. That’s not good enough.

“If every decision in this league is based on ‘we think so’ then we’re in trouble.

“The linesman got it badly wrong. The benefit of the doubt is supposed to go to the attacking player anyway.

“And for their second goal, it’s a clear throw-in to us.

“The linesman (not the one who flagged Suarez offside) gives us the throw but the referee (Andre Marriner) saw something different.

“He gave Everton the throw and their second goal came from that.”

Liverpool fielded five derby debutants in their starting line-up and the introduction of Sebastian Coates made it six when he came on at half-time.

The average age of the Reds team on Sunday was just under 25 with the likes of teenagers Raheem Sterling, Suso and Andre Wisdom included.

“I feel sorry for our lads because I thought we were fantastic and deserved to win,” said Gerrard.

“We had a young, small team out there but they were all men and stuck together.

“There was one team here who came to play football and win the game and that was us.”

Manager Brendan Rodgers, also experiencing his first Merseyside derby, agreed.

“Raheem is 17 years old, Suso is 18, Andre 19, Jonjo Shelvey 20, while Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson are 22,” he said.

“They are all young players who will only grow and get better and better.

“So it was another terrific stride forward for us.

“I look at my team and how they stood up to everything against a very experienced team in a real cauldron of an atmosphere and I am very proud.”
