Pfizer supports GPs in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya

General Practitioners (GP) in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya have benefited from Pfizer’s General Practitioners’ (GP) programme, a corporate social responsibility initiative of the company.

The GPs medical skills and education got a boost through the pharmaceutical company’s ‘Learning Exchange Advancement Programme (LEAP).

The initiative, which began three years ago, has reached 5,000 doctors, with 2,000 being reached between July and  last month through technology.

Pfizer explained that the objectives of LEAP are two-fold: First, it wants to be close to the GPs, who are the first point of call for patients,  to get a deeper understanding of their peculiar practice-related circumstances and needs, and second, to contribute to updating their knowledge and skills on trends in medical practice.

Pfizer Essential Health Marketing Director, Winston Ailemoh, who spoke on the reasons the company focused on general practice physicians, said: “We believe at the end, if the patients get better care, Pfizer’s mission of saving lives will be achieved. But our primary target is to improve the knowledge of the GPs and make them better in diagnoses, management of the patients and recommending what is best for the patients. We have realised over time that this is one segment within the healthcare sector that had been neglected by a lot of pharmaceutical companies.

“The focus of most pharmaceutical companies is on specialists. They invest in cardiologists, oncologists, diabetologists, etc. But when an individual is sick, he or she usually goes to the general practice physician first. So, our focus is on the general practitioners.’’

Explaining the importance of general practitioners in the medical ecosystem, Ailemoh said when a patient goes to the hospital, the first doctor he will usually encounter is a general practice physician, who conducts initial checks and tests and makes a provisional/preliminary diagnosis.

The programme has engaged doctors in all the geo-political zones of each country (Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya). However, the company recently re-strategised on how to reach more doctors leveraging modern technology.

Ailemoh said: “Three years ago, we started this programme with two or three meetings in a year; one in the north, one in the south and one in the west. But now we are doing it differently.”

He added: “We started asking ourselves towards the end of last year, how we could reach more doctors, and we decided to leverage technology monthly to attain a wider coverage across multiple centers in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya.

“From May, this year, we started experimenting with a broadcast centre in Lagos and receiving centres in different parts of Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya. Four months down the line, it has been an amazing success story for us,” he said.

Corroborating the marketing director, the Brand Manager, Primary Care, Olakunle Ogunlowo, said the programme had achieved its two critical objectives.

On how the participants are sourced, Ailemoh said: “We have medical representatives engaging the GPs daily in both private and public hospitals across Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya. Invitations are extended through the medical representatives and their managers, who engage not less than 50 hospitals weekly,” he informed.

The marketing director emphasised that the impact had been tremendous, adding that the main objective is to reach more GPs with the medical education programme by continuous innovative approach leveraging technology.

“In terms of impact, it has been tremendous. For instance, the impact of over 2000 general practitioners well equipped with such knowledge could bring about a great improvement in health care delivery to patients,” he added.

The company plans to extend its tentacles  to Benin, Calabar, Enugu and Kano.

Trump hosts Buhari, other African leaders, lauds Ebola defeat

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday hosted President Muhammadu Buhari and other African leaders to a working lunch on the sidelines of the 72nd UN General Assembly in New York.

Trump, who said he was greatly honoured to host the lunch, which took place at the New York Palace Hotel, described African leaders as “partners for promoting prosperity and peace.

“I’m greatly honoured to be joined by leaders of Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Namibia, Senegal, Uganda and South Africa. In particular, I want to thank President Condé, who is representing the African Union,” he said.

“In this room, I see partners for promoting prosperity and peace on a range of economic, humanitarian and security issues.

“We hope to extend our economic partnerships with countries who are committed to self-reliance and to fostering opportunities for job creation in both Africa and the United States.

“Africa has tremendous business potential. I have so many friends going to your countries, trying to get rich. I congratulate you.

“They’re spending a lot of money. But it does – it has tremendous business potential and representing huge amounts of different markets. And for American firms it’s really become a place that they have to go – that they want to go.

“Six of the world’s ten fastest-growing economies are in Africa. Increasing American trade and investment across diverse industries – including agriculture, energy, transportation, healthcare, travel, and tourism – will further transform lives throughout the continent.”

He said “Africa, I have to say, is a continent of tremendous potential. The outlook is bright. I look forward to hearing from you and your advice during the meal.”

The U.S. leader said  he was eager to closely know more African leaders! noting tha “I really want to congratulate you – growing very fast economically and in every other way. You’ve done a terrific job, you’ve had some tremendous obstacles placed in your path, but you have done really an absolutely incredible job.”

Trump pledged that the U.S. would partner with African countries and organisations, like the African Union, leading successful efforts to end violence to prevent the spread of terrorism, and to respond to humanitarian crises.

“I commend your troops currently serving in the field. Very brave. Very, very brave what they’re going through. But we cannot have prosperity if we’re not healthy.

“We will continue our partnership on critical health initiatives. Uganda has made incredible strides in the battle against HIV/AIDS. In Guinea and Nigeria, you fought a horrifying Ebola outbreak.

“Namibia’s health system is increasingly self-sufficient. My Secretary of Health and Human Services will be traveling to Africa to promote our Global Health Security Agenda.”

The U.S. leader, however, regretted that too many people were suffering from conflict in Africa, pointing out the Central African Republic, the Congo, Libya, Mali, Somalia and South Sudan, among others, “were going through dangerous times.”

He noted that terrorist groups, such as ISIS, al-Shabaab, Boko Haram, and al Qaeda threaten African peace, adding that the U.S. was proud to work with African leaders toward eradicating terrorist safe havens, to cut off their finances, and to discredit their depraved ideology.

“And a number of you have told me – actually, last night – that we’ve been doing a very good job over the last six or seven months in particular,” he said.

Trump said the U.S. was closely monitoring and deeply disturbed by ongoing violence in South Sudan and in the Congo, adding that U.S. had continued to provide humanitarian assistance but real results in halting the conflicts would require an African-led peace process and sincere commitment of all parties involved.

“And I know you’re working on that, and you’re working on that very hard to assist in these efforts, I’m sending Ambassador Nikki Haley to Africa to discuss avenues of conflict and resolution and most importantly, prevention”.

Trump, at the dinner attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama and the Permanent Representative to the UN, Prof. Tijjani Bande, also discussed Africa-U.S. partnership against the nuclear weapons threat from North Korea, describing it “a global challenge.

“Today, the world faces enormous security threat from North Korea. We must all stand together and be accountable in implementing UN sanctions and resolutions in response to North Korea’s hostile and menacing actions.

“We believe that a free, independent and democratic nation, in all cases, is the best vehicle for human happiness and success. Thank you for joining me for this critical discussion about challenges and opportunities in our nations”, Trump said.

Fans hopeful Super Eagles will qualify for semi-finals

Some football enthusiasts in Nigeria on Sunday expressed optimism that the home-based Super Eagles would defeat hosts, Ghana, and qualify for the semi-finals of the ongoing West Africa Football Union ( WAFU ) tournament in spite of their last goalless draw,

Bethel Ugonna, a footballer with Golden FC of Port Harcourt told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that qualifying for the semi-finals was very possible.

Ugonna urged the Salisu Yusuf coached boys to go all out as a team against the host country Ghana on Monday, and defeat them, while advising the team to improve on its attack.

He said that the team had to galvanise its attack to be able to convert their chances to goals.

“The attack makes mistakes, especially when it comes to scoring goals. It is time for them to sit up at least against Ghana in order to qualify for semi-finals,” Ugonna said.

Also, Lambert Uba, a coach said that the CHAN Eagles would reach the semi-finals.

Uba noted that the team’s determination and coordination were key to beating Ghana on Monday as he called for total crushing of Ghana.

He said that this was time for the Eagles to show the stuff they were made of by humbling Ghana on their own pitch.

Hassan Isa, a football fan and a businessman urged the Eagles to show that Nigeria’s recent disgrace of Cameroon, Africa’s champions was not a fluke by beating Ghana.

Isa said that he had no fears about the Super Eagles whether home-based or not, especially with their recent performance in World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria on Thursday were held to a goalless draw by Mali in their first group match having eliminated Sierra Leone in the knock stage.

Again the Super Eagles were taken back from clinching the semifinals ticket by the Syli Eagles of Guinea on Saturday.

The Salisu Yusuf boys will on Monday slug it out with Ghana in an all-important match to decide the semi-finals ticket.

  • Fans confident Super Eagles will reach semis despite draw

Fans confident Super Eagles will reach semis despite draw

Football enthusiasts have expressed confidence that the Super Eagles will qualify for the semi-finals of the West Africa Football Union ( WAFU ) Cup of Nations tournament in spite of draw in their first group game.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the home-based Super Eagles were held to a 0-0 draw by Mali in their Group A opener at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium, Ghana on Thursday.

A cross section of football enthusiasts who spoke to NAN on Friday said the group was still open as the Eagles’ could still finish on top of the table should they win their remaining games.

Musa Talle, Chairman, FCT Football Association, said the game against Mali was an evenly and fairly contested match between the two West African football powerhouses.

“Our game against Mali was a tough one, but the boys managed to grind out a ‘somewhat’ positive result from the encounter.

“Even though they could not score, they also did not concede which is very important.

“Now, they have one point with two more games to play in the group stage and I am confident that they will be ready for the games against Guinea and hosts Ghana.

“I am sure they know the pride and history that comes with such games, especially that of Ghana, so they will be prepared to up their game,’’ he said.

Coach Bala Mohammed of Niger Tornadoes observed that the Eagles were resilient and dogged in the defence but wasteful in front of goal.

“I have no problem with the defence department but the attackers wasted a lot of scoring opportunities.

“Therefore, the Eagles must ensure they work on their finishing if they hope to go far in the competition,’’ he said.

Usman Ilerika, the Acting Secretary, FCT Football Association, said that even though the boys failed to convert some clear cut chances at goal, they were hard done by poor officiating.

“I am not trying to make any excuse for the Eagles’ firing blank against Mali, however, I think they were hard done by some poor decisions made by the referee.

“There were several talking points, including some questionable officiating in the first half, when the Assistant Referee wrongly ruled Festus Eduwo offside after Rabiu Ali put the ball in the net.

“Nevertheless, the boys must put the game behind them and focus on the next against Guinea which is a must win if they hope to qualify for the semi-finals,’’ he said.

Godwin Bamigboye, the Chairman, FCT Chapter of Nigeria Football Coaches Association said; “Hopefully, we’ll survive from the group. It is only the first game.

“Ghana is on three points after their victory over Guinea and that puts pressure on us to also get our three points against Guinea.

“I believe we can beat them and hope the hosts also beat Mali. If that happens, then we stand a better chance of qualifying for the semi-finals,’’ he said.

NAN also reports that the group’s other game saw hosts Ghana beat Guinea 2-0 on Thursday.

The home-based Eagles’ next game comes up on Saturday against Guinea at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium, Cape Coast.

They will then face hosts Ghana on Monday.

  • Football enthusiasts hail Eagles’ good start

Football enthusiasts hail Eagles’ good start

Football enthusiasts on Tuesday hailed the Super Eagles for the team’s good start to their campaign in the ongoing West African Football Union (WAFU) Cup of Nations in Ghana.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Super Eagles B team got their WAFU Cup campaign underway on a positive note with a 2-0 victory over their Sierra Leoneans counterparts on Monday night.

Late goals from Osas Okoro and Peter Eneji were the tonic needed by the Salisu Yusuf tutored lads to break the resistance of the impressive Lone Stars at the Cape Coast Stadium.

With the win, Nigeria progressed to the Group A, which also comprises hosts Ghana, Mali and Guinea.

A cross section of football enthusiasts who spoke to NAN noted that it was a hard fight won by the Ikechukwu Ezenwa side, adding that the team must sustain the momentum and team spirit.

Garba Lawal, an ex-international said teamwork was germane to the Eagles’ victory against a resilient Sierra Leonian side.

“It was a well-coordinated effort by the team from the goalkeeping, defence, midfield to the attacking departments.

“I must particular commend Ezenwa for putting up a ‘man-of-the-match’ performance.

“He was mountainous in goal and proved why he is ready for bigger tasks for the Super Eagles in future.

“I hope the boys can continue playing like this and if they do, they will definitely be a handful for any other team in the tournament,” he said.

Bala Mohammed, Technical Adviser of Niger Tornadoes FC said Rabiu Ali’s performance, among others, impressed him the most.

“Ali is a sure stopper when he gets his bearing in games.

“He was at the heart of the Eagles’ positive moves and linked up well with his wicked passes, just the way he does for Kano Pillars.

“Also, Osas Okoro and Chima Akas were always venturing forward and looking to provide support to the attackers.

“They provided width to the tactical system of the Super Eagles and weren’t found wanting.

“Okoro’s free kick was a typical “Television Goal” and he started the move that resulted in the second goal of the game.

“With this kind of performance, I think the boys will go very far in the tournament,” he said.

Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu of MFM FC praised Coach Salisu Yusuf for his tactical and technical prowess which saw the game turn on its head.

He explained that the positive substitutions made by the coach was unprecedented, noting that a difficult game was always won from the bench.

“The trio of Peter Eneji, Ubong Friday and Gabriel Okechukwu read a script dished out by Yusuf Salisu and acted it perfectly.

“The three attackers were menacing when they were thrown into the fray and that was the antidote needed to deal with such games.

“Kudos to the team for a hard-fought victory,” he said.

Dele Johnson, Coach of Henfield FC, Abuja said he was impressed by team’s style of play, adding that they made football look beautiful to watch.

“The team played a fluid and interesting game and the goal by Peter Eneji was a sweeping team move. Tic tac, sexy football, one touch game and whoops it landed at the back of the net.

“It was a one time finish from Eneji, who curled a low shot beyond the stranded keeper.

“The Plateau United man reminded fans of the predatory abilities of the late Rashidi Yekini with his goal poacher’s effort.

“Keep it up guys and keep flying the country’s flag high,” he advised.

  • Morocco, South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria jostle to host AFRIMA 2017

Morocco, South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria jostle to host AFRIMA 2017

Morocco, South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria have shown interest to host Africa’s biggest music event, All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA 2017-2019 editions as announced by the international Committee of AFRIMA. These countries made their interest to the African Union Commission, AUC, who is saddled with the role of deciding on the hosting right in partnership with the International Committee of AFRIMA.

The 2017 AFRIMA will hold from November 10 to 12, 2017. It is scheduled to present to the continent a world class programme of events such as the Africa Music Business Roundtable (November 10), which brings together big music brands, music producers and intellectual property persons to start profitable conversations on the needed networks and infrastructure for an expanding youth-based industry.

Other events are the AFRIMA Music Village (November 10), an evening of a non-stop open music festival of live performances from the African stars and nominees, with an expected audience of 40,000 people; the main Awards Ceremony (November 12); a star-studded and world-class event with live performances and television broadcast to 84 countries on 109 television stations around the world.

Nigeria has hosted the event for one term of three years since 2014. However, Nigeria has again shown interest to host the event for another term of three years as stated in the letter written by Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture with reference number FMCT/ECS/002/I to the African Union.

In his letter, Mohammed stated: ‘We have also witnessed increased unity and collaborations among young music African professionals as they congregate each year in Lagos, Africa’s most vibrant entertainment capital for the awards ceremony.’

Mohammed also noted that hosting AFRIMA has boosted the country’s image and tourism opportunities, promoted its culture and tourist attractions and positioned Nigeria as a safe and hospitable destination among others.

Some of the parameters that the AUC-AFRIMA will consider in deciding on the host country for AFRIMA events are immigration and visa application management, availability of functional airport and good land transportation system, venue infrastructure, hotels and hospitality facilities as well as adequate provision of security for guests and officials.
