    •Organisers release nominations

    Organisers have released nominations into the 30 categories of the Golden Icons Academy Movie Awards (GIAMA), revealing another opportunity to celebrate keenly contestable, widely-involving movies by filmmakers in Africa and the Diaspora.

    Put together by Golden Icons Magazine, a Houston, Texas-based celebrity publication, the awards show, according to the organisers, celebratesthe very best of African entertainment and rich culture through motion pictures.’

    Publisher of Golden Icons Magazine and CEO of GIAMA, Mr. Bode Ojo, stated that the nominations reveal the best of African films within the period in review, with most submissions coming from countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Canada, and the United States.

    Some of the filmmakers and works which show strength of dominance in the Best Producer category include Lancelot Imasuen for Invasion 1897; CJ Fiery Obasi for Ojuju; Dare & Lanre Fasasi for Head Gone; Moses Inyang/Caroline Danjuma for Stalker; Jeta Amata for Black November; and Okey Ezugwu for Jafar.

    While Imasuen, Inyang, Amata, and Dare Fasasi resurface in the Best Director category, they will be slogging it out with directors such as Chris Eneng Eneaji for Trials of Igho; Muyiwa Aluko for Love Regardless and Ejim Fortune Kezi for The Changer.

    The award ceremony which is billed to take place in Houston, Texas, on October 17, will be hosted by notable comedian cum actor, AY Makun.

    Other films with nominations include While We Slept, Iya Alalake, Verdict, Stigma, When Love Comes Around, Horn-free Day, Red Rose, The Portrait, and Affairs of the Heart among others.

    The Best actor category has the likes of Fredrick Leonard, Hakeem Kae-Kasim, Majid Michel, Jim Iyke, Mike Omoregbee, Ken Erics and Clem Ohameze contesting the diadem, while the Best Actress nominees are Adesua Etomi, Uche Jombo, Ini Edo, Mbong Amata, Jackie Appiah, Nse Ikpe Etim, and Ruth Kadiri.

    At was a convergence of Africans and African-Americans on Saturday, October 25 at the Stafford Centre, Houston Texas, as the third edition of the Golden Icon Academy Movie Awards (GIAMA) held.

    Hosted by comedy merchant, Julius Agwu, the event began with a red carpet, which had some of the biggest Africa’s TV networks in the United States beaming the ceremony live to their audiences.

    The Awards also featured performances from comedians, dancers and musicians who took turns to rock the GIAMA stage. Among them were Seyi Brown, MCPC, Jedi and Mayowa among others.

    Nigerian movies had the highest number of nominations, followed by movies from Ghana. There were also films from South Africa and the Caribbean. Among the Nigerian movies that won laurels at the event are, Iyore with 10 nominations, 30 Days in Atlanta and A Mile from Home with nine nominations each.

    The big winners at this year’s GIAMA are, Eric Aghimien who won Best Director for the movie, A Mile from Home. Rita Dominic and Kanayo O Kanayo (K.O.K) also clinched the Best Actress and Best Actor awards for the movie Iyore and Apaye respectively. Emem Isong, who picked up the plaque on behalf of K.O.K, revealed that Apaye has been the most challenging movie of her career as a producer.

    Other winners at the event include, Ivie Okujaye, Tope Tedela, Tonto Dikeh, Uti Nwachukwu, Robert Peters, Ayo Maku, Ramsey Nouah, Raz Adoti and Paula Obaseki.

    Also, an honorary grand recognition award was presented to Captain Dr. Hosa Wells Okunbo for what organisers described as his unflinching support for African cinema. Represented by Mr. Robert Oyiwa, Okunbo pledged to continually support Africa while also announcing the kick-off of the first 24-hour African TV channel in Canada.

    Other African stars who graced the event were Stella Damasus, Ini Edo, Majid Michel, Juliet Ibrahim, Susan Peters, Lancelot Imaseun, Daniel Ademinokan, Morris K. Sesay, Belinda Effah, Frank Rajah and Alex Ekubo.

    African Muzic Magazine Awards makes debut in Texas

    FOLLOWING the successful hosting of the second Golden Icon Africa Movie Awards (GIAMA) in Houston last October, the African Muzic Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA) has now berthed.

    It is designed to cater to the music genre of the creative industry.

    GIAMA, which was hosted by Nollywood star, Ramsey Nouah, had the patronage of the like of Richard Mofe-Damijo.

    Consequently, it is believed that there is now a conscious effort by Nigerians in the Diaspora to lead a continental initiative to reward excellence through classic shows in the creative sector.

    According to the organizers, the event is being positioned as “The sole award ceremony in the Diaspora that caters to all musical genres, including but not limited to Afrobeats, Assiko, Bongo, Decale, Funana, Genge, Highlife, Hiplife, Kwaito, Lingala and Soukous.

    “African music is currently gaining global recognition at a rapid pace following this trend; AFRIMMA will create a platform that promotes the diversity of African music by bringing influential artists from different African countries for a night of celebration,” said the organizers.

    An offshoot of the magazine published by Anderson Obiagwu, the company has been in the forefront of show promotions in the United States.

    Their next project is the official Valentine show on February 15, in Dallas, United States, featuring Limpopo crooner, Kcee and his ally, Harrysong.

    Anderson, as he is fondly called, is the Founder/CEO of Big A Entertainment, the show promotion platform of the company.

    According to him, “AFRIMMA’s vision is endorsed by some of the biggest African artistes such as Fuse ODG (UK), Lira (South Africa), Tuface Idibia (Nigeria), Flavour Nabania (Nigeria), Miriam Chemmoss (Tanzania) , Avril (Kenya), Afro Mask (Ghana/ United Kingdom) , Nonini (Kenya), Chub Heightz (Botswana) and many more.”

    In an exclusive chat with The Nation, Anderson, who said he had been residing in the United States for the past 15 years, noted that he grew up listening to Nigerian music. “I will comfortably say that African music is the best music in the world,” he added.

    According to him, the company has proudly hosted talent shows across the United States, since its inception and the shows had been well attended.

    Some of their past shows featured top African artistes like P-Square, Timaya, Flavour Nabania, Bracket, Tuface Idibia, Awilo Longomba and Michael Blackson, among others.

    For the AFRIMMA, Anderson said the maiden edition will come up on July 26th, at the Eisemann Center in Richardson, Texas.

    Eisemann Center has been recognized by clients, patrons and the media as one of the leading performing arts facilities serving the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

    Music categories to be covered by the award include Best Male West Africa; Best Female West Africa; Best Male East Africa; Best Female East Africa; Best Male Central Africa; Best Female Central Africa; Best Male Southern Africa; Best Female Southern Africa; Best African Group; Best Male Diaspora; Best Female Diaspora; Best Gospel Artist; Best Male Traditional; Best Female Traditional; Best Newcomer; Best Video Director; Best DJ Africa; Best DJ Diaspora; Leadership in Muzik Award; Legendary Award; Best Video of the Year; Music producer of the year; Best Dance Group; Best Rap Act and Best Collabo.

    The show, according to organisers, will be hosted by notable Africa’s standup comedian, Basketmouth and sexy Ghanaian actress, Juliet Ibrahim.

    THIS appears to be an initiative beyond an empty buzz, as Africans at home and Diaspora appear set to storm Houston, Texas, United State for the second edition of the Golden Icons Academy Movie Award (GIAMA) scheduled for October 19, 2013.

    A Sneak preview of the debut edition which held on October 20 at the Morris Cultural Center in Houston recorded a star-studded outing, of a rare selection. And if the assurance by organisers, that veteran actor and Delta State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Richard Mofe Damijo has declared for the award show is anything to go by, then, the show may just be on another jolly ride to enriching its dossier.

    Leveraging on the success of the Golden Icons Magazine, publisher of the entertainment magazine and organiser of the award, Bode Ojo has turned Houston into another ‘Mecca’ where celebrities not only look forward to gracing, but also get competitive in fashion and creativity works.

    At a recent award ceremony in Washington DC last Saturday, side talks about the next stop for top celebrities rendezvous was the GIAMA and what celebrities will wear to the occasion.

    The success of the GIAMA, according to Ojo, “is currently the hottest gist in town, with over 1500 fans/guests present, it was noted that this turnout was one that Houston, the 4th largest city in the US has never seen in a predominantly African-dominated event.”

    Ojo revealed that following Jim Iyke’s anchorage of the show last year, there has been jostling for the next emcee spot, and Nollywood lover boy, Ramsey Nouah has been picked as the show host for 2013.

    The role call for last edition was explosive, feting A-list celebrity actors and actresses like Ramsey Nouah, Jim Iyke, Van Vicker, Desmond Elliot, John Dumelo, Uche Jombo, Majid Michel, Monalisa Chinda, Emem Isong, Frank Rajah, Susan Peters, Chigozie Atuanya, Uti Nwachukwu, Alex Ekubo, Belinda Effah, Pascal Atuma, Oscar Atuma, Chet Anaekwe, and Olalekan Akintunde among others.

    Golden Icon Magazine reported that last year’s award ceremony started with Nollywood Bad-Boy Jim Iyke, arriving in style at the event in a MayBach, with his usual swagger and style, even as MTV Africa was present at the event to cover Iyke’s reality show “Jim Iyke Unscripted” and his hosting of the awards ceremony.

    And just so the show can be better and bigger, venue for this year’s outing is the Stafford Center Performing Art Theater in Houston, Texas. The GIAMA organization is promising a captivating show with a great line-up of incredible performers.

    GIAMA’s inaugural event filled over a thousand seats with entertainers, international dignities, and movie fans to celebrate the very best in the African film industry especially Nollywood, which hit the CNN profile-chart as the 2nd largest movie Industry in the world. “This year, we raise the standards even higher, with a cutting- edge production, an elaborate theatre hall, and the most sought-after Nigerian actor Rasmey Nouah to host the proceedings,” said Ojo.

    The GIAMA boss noted that the show is being supported by Dure Events, Segun Gele, BellaNaija, Arik Airlines, Nollywood Access, Nollywood View, Bashman Entertainment, Naijapals, Jaguda, Sturvs and several other organizations listed on GIAMA’s website.

    Efforts by the GIAMA planning committee is said to be mind-boggling. The event was planned by Chioma of Dure Events, a well renowned Event Planner in the United States and Segun Gele, the internationally celebrated make-up and head-gear artist, while the media production was managed by Tosin of T and S Production. Zimbabwean-born Radio Personality based in Canada, MC Bonde did an excellent job with the voice over for the media production.

    On the eve of the GIAMA Awards, the Screen Icon Search (SIS) event was held with a sole purpose of identifying and recognizing young and future talents with the right qualities to get into the Nollywood/Ghollywood industry. The SIS was moderated by three top Producers/Directors in the industry Emem Isong (Nigeria), Frank Rajah (Ghana) and Pascal Atruma (USA). The audition was a day long and after hours of auditioning, the top five winners were selected by the moderators, and they were announced during the GIAMA Awards ceremony. Dianne Yekini, who travelled all the way from London to participate in the SIS event emerged the winner. The top three winners are guaranteed a movie deal with Emem, Pascal and Frank. Later in the evening, a welcome party themed “Meet and Greet” was held at the classy location “Signature Manor” to honor the Celebrity guest and Sponsors of the event, and provide an avenue for them to mingle in a most relaxing atmosphere.
