Gift Iyioku is an accomplished scholar focused on empowering Africa’s youth. She has a strong academic background and extensive experience in human capital development. She is dedicated to creating pathways for young Africans to thrive. In this interview, she speaks with our correspondent ALAO ABIODUN on African youth empowerment and other sundry issues
Your work centers on the empowerment of African youth. Can you elaborate on why this is a critical issue for the continent today?
Absolutely. Africa has the youngest population in the world, which presents both tremendous opportunities and challenges. Investing in youth empowerment is crucial because young people are key drivers of innovation and economic growth. By equipping them with the right skills and resources, we can address pressing issues like unemployment and underdevelopment, ultimately creating a more prosperous future for the continent.
You have an impressive academic background and have worked with organizations like the Africa Progress Group and UNESCO. How have these experiences shaped your perspective on U.S.-Africa relations?
My experiences have reinforced the importance of collaboration between the U.S. and African nations. There’s a wealth of untapped potential in Africa that can greatly benefit from U.S. expertise and investment. By fostering partnerships, we can tackle common challenges such as economic development, education, and health care. I believe that strong U.S.-Africa relations can create sustainable opportunities for both sides, and my work is aimed at facilitating these connections.
As you look to the future, what are your plans for continuing your work in international development?
I have ambitious plans. One of my main goals is to secure a fellowship with a prestigious think tank in the U.S., such as the Council on Foreign Relations, Hoover Institution, or Brookings Institution. This would provide me with a platform to conduct impactful research, publish policy briefs, and engage with U.S. government initiatives aimed at strengthening partnerships across Africa. I believe that being part of such esteemed organizations will not only enhance my research capabilities but also open doors for book deals and publishing opportunities, allowing me to share my insights on the pressing issues affecting Africa’s youth.
That sounds like a robust plan! What kind of impact do you hope to make through this work?
My hope is to influence policy decisions that prioritize the needs and aspirations of African youth. By contributing to meaningful dialogues and creating actionable policies, I aim to help shape a more favorable environment for young entrepreneurs and innovators in Africa. Additionally, I want to use my platform to advocate for educational reforms and initiatives that can transform the landscape for youth development on the continent.
As a role model for many young Africans, what advice would you offer to those looking up to you?
I would encourage young people to pursue their passions relentlessly and remain resilient in the face of challenges. Education is a powerful tool, and I believe that staying committed to lifelong learning will open many doors. It’s essential to network, seek mentorship, and engage with initiatives that promote personal and professional growth. Finally, I’d advise them to stay connected to their communities and leverage their unique perspectives to create positive change.
Thank you, Gift, for sharing your insights and future aspirations. Your commitment to empowering Africa’s youth is truly inspiring.
Thank you for the opportunity to share my story. I’m really excited about the future transformative opportunities as well.
