  • Electricity Tariffs reduction as Greek gift

IR: President Goodluck Jonathan’s desperation knows no bounds. How can a government reduce electricity tariffs for private companies’ services or is it a lie that the electricity sector has been privatised? What an election gimmick!

Recently NERC told Nigerians that electricity tariffs would be increased

from June 2015 because of the free fall of the naira that is not commensurate with the current economic reality. What informed this deceitful move from the federal government?

It is an indisputable truth that Nigerians all over the nation are crying out and complaining bitterly about high tariff for a nonexistent service through the supply of power by these private electricity distribution companies despite the purported trillions of naira expended by the government, which has rather turned Nigeria into one huge ball of darkness.

One is aware that because of the clamour for change, this government

in misreading the mood of the nation came up with fake palliatives including reduction in the pump price per litre of petrol from N97 to N87. But the reality of the situation is that except in Lagos and Abuja, in most other states, the pump price per litre of petrol is above N100 and for some weeks now, fuel queues resurfaced again; so who is fooling who?

Nigerians should not, as the general elections draw nearer, fall for Greek gift because they don’t last long.

    Hot Valentine’s gift ideas

THE day for expressing love in a special way is around the corner. Hope you have been sharing in advance the spirit of love and warmth that such day brings. It is a day to give passionate gifts as an outward sign of love for your spouse, loved ones, the needy and those around you. This is the time to express how you feel, not only in words, but also by actions.

In this part of the world, it is the general belief that to get ready-made gifts, you need a whole lot of money. But in actual fact, that is not the case. If you have the time, you can make up your own gift hampers and pack them with colourful gloss wrappers.  You don’t even need to use a basket. But basket or no basket, you could just cover a box filled with gifts with a scented red rose in fanciful wrapping paper. And if you don’t have much in your pocket, give her flowers or give him a wristwatch. Remember it is a season for friends.

Hey guys, whatever you may decide to give her, add red scented rose to your gift. The smell of a rose is always special. This is the classic symbol of love since time immemorial. And there is no better scent for this season of love.

Governor’s cash gift divides Niger students

National president of the National Association of Niger State Students (NANISS), Shehu Mohammed Chata, has been suspended by Student Representatives’ Assembly (SRA), the legislative arm of the association, in its meeting held on Wednesday.

Also suspended are the General Secretary, Abubakar Abdullahi, and Financial Secretary, Yusuf Mohammed.

A communique signed by the SRA Senate President, Saidu Kandi, stated that the executive members were suspended for using the name of the association to endorse candidates in the 2015 general elections without due consultation of members. The SRA accused the suspended officials of collecting undisclosed amount of cash from Governor Babangida Aliyu without informing association.

Members of the legislative arm said they wondered why suspended officials could not explain why monthly payment of scholarship to students was stopped eight months ago. The trio were accused of breaching the constitutional provision, detailing appointment of Chief of Staff.

The SRA members, who met at Assembly Hall of the Niger State College of Education in Minna, said the association would not support any politicians who could not convince them why he is contesting the election. They said they would rid the association of corruption perpetrated by the suspended officials.

The communique reads: “This is to inform members of this glorious association of the new development. The national president, Geberal Secretary and Financial Secretary have been suspended from office based on established cases of violation and incompetence against them. We deem our association as instrument of democracy and we don’t want anyone to cause harm to it by dropping its name for personal gain.”

The SRA directed the Vice President, Hauwa Ibrahim Ahmad, to act as president, while Assistant General Secretary, Abubakar Mohammed Nma , acts as General Secretary.

The SRA said Chata, Abdullahi and Yusuf would remain in suspension for six weeks till they prove their cases before the disciplinary committee of the association.

Abdullahi did not pick his calls by our reporters at press time.

Want a gift for Val? Branded Coke is it!

Three weeks away from February 14, a date commemorated worldwide as Valentine Day otherwise known as lovers’ day, there is already a flurry of activities in major cities across the federation as shopping frenzy for gift items by all and sundry has started.

Interestingly, one gift that seems to have stolen the heart of many is the new branded Coca Cola drink. The drink seems to be the shoppers’ choice.

Shoppers, who were sighted buying the new coke at Shoprite, Ikeja, expressed satisfaction as they bought coke in large quantities with their name written on its acns and plastic.

For Babajide Adebayo, the innovation should be replicated by other brands. “This is a laudable concept. I have always known Coca Cola to set the pace, while other follows. I am not surprised,” he said.

Adebayo added that the innovation would help him spend less this Valentine.

“I will spend less for Valentine this year. All I need do is to purchase a pack or half of the new branded Coca Cola with my girl’s name and I know she would love it. The brain behind this innovation must have had Valentine in mind when they inscribed ‘Share a Coke with Ibrahim’ on its bottle. It could be someone else’s name, he said.

Ikechukwu Nworfor, another shopper who is excited about the  innovation said it gives him the opportunity to find affordable gift items for his loved ones. “The timing is right. These people surely know how to arrange things; this is a good gift concept any day, any time.”

Besides serving as gift packs for Valentine, most people also consider them as souvenirs. Sharing his experience with The Nation Shopping, Fred Nwosisi said it is a special collectors’ item anytime, any day.

Justifying the need for the products, a representative of the Coca Cola Company, who asked not to be named because he is not authorised to speak on behalf of the company, confided in The Nation Shopping that those customers who want branded bottles in large quantity will have to be referred to the company’s head office where the contractor and the producer will take such orders, according to him, this offer is available only to customers who want to purchase hundred cartons and more.

“The unique thing about this whole thing is that the price remains the same despite all the interesting features in designs and labeling,” he said.

The source advised that a customer who is not patient enough to look for a coke can or plastic branded in his name, can decide to pick for his/her spouse, family members or friends. This, he said, is   encouraging people to share and show love to others around them which is one of the essences of the idea aside to boosting sales and make profit.

To help the search process easy for the shopper, the item is placed in batches with names from the western part of the country placed separately from those from the east and the north, and English names such as Henry and Ann were on display.

The  idea of separating the name came up when shoppers’ complained of how difficult it was for them to identify their names or name of loved ones.

Believe Odiase, a shopper said he gave up after searching for a can of coke with his name branded on it. “When I couldn’t continue with the search to buy a bottle of Coke, because I have other things to do in the mall, I gave up and picked a bottle for my daughter whose name is Cynthia. Perhaps, I will find time to come search for mine at weekend; it is worth the fun and sharing,” he said.

  • A perfect bilateral gift

He walked into an unlit hall simply dressed in a long sleeve shirt and a pair of brown chinos. Then, on came the lights and echoes of Happy Birthday greeted him on all sides. The party was soon to begin.

Was Mr Giovanni De Berti embarrassed? No; only pleasantly surprised. It was the handiwork of his friend, Capt. Shehu Iyal, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Aviation.

Was it just another birthday bash? No, for De Berti is not just another guy. He is Italian-Nigerian, having just nationalised. So, what better way to show vintage friendship and hospitality than springing a well-packaged surprise on a day Berti was a year older? But there seems to be more to it than that. Such a treat may send a nice message back to Italy that Berti is in good company in his new home.

De Berti said he felt like a young lad celebrating his birthday for the first time. He was full of excitement. Friends, dignitaries and associates poured champagne and celebrated with him. Captain Iyal sat closely by his side as they enjoyed the ambience.

In his short speech, he said, “I felt honoured. I am so happy. This is the first time in my life I am being celebrated this way. I am just happy.”

He cut the cake and the party began. The guests danced to a series of soft music that suited the atmosphere. The flashlights of paparazzi cameras flooded the hall.

Berti narrated how supportive his host has been during his three-year stay in the country. He stressed the bond between them.

“The party, for me, was something incredible. My brother Shehu gave me an incredible surprise and I am grateful. I am very happy that my brother and I celebrated this birthday together and it was an honour for me.”

He spoke about his experience in the country. “My life in Nigeria and Abuja has been very nice and I have spent almost three years in Nigeria. He is really a brother, a brother forever. In any part of the world, in any moment, he can count on me like the most important version of his life.

“He is a special person, a real friend with capital F. Nigeria is my home.”

As the celebration ended, the memory would linger in the mind of everyone who attended and made the night a memorable one for De Berti and his friend.

Gift galore for Dads on Father’s Day

This year’s Father’s Day is here again! And as usual, not a few Nigerians are warming up to  appreciate fathers with  memorable gift items such as tech gifts to keep long lasting memories. Father’s Day, which is celebrated on different days in different parts of the world, is celebrated in Nigeria on June 15 every year.

Father’s Day celebration is a reflection of the contribution of fathers to the development of the individual members of the family, especially the children. It is a time to honour fathers and celebrate fatherhood, paternal bonds, and a time to tell the influence of fathers in the  society. The day was created to complement Mother’s Day, a celebration that honours mothers and motherhood.

Ahead of this year’s celebration, which is two days from now, neighbourhood stores, supermarkets, and online stores have come alive, as most of them stock a number of affordable gifts items for Dad’s. Shoppers are already trouping to such places to buy memorable gifts this period.

For instance, at the Arena Complex, yesterday, a shopper identified as Oluwaseyifunmi Okuwa was seen buying motivational and inspirational books because they are his father’s favourite. For master Ayomikun Adeniji, a primary school pupil, frames and cards to express his love to his father, are more to it.

Another shopper, Oluwafemi Adesayo said his father is the type that has craving for wrist watches, which is why he would not hesitate buying him one.
