  • Gifts’ prices skyrocket ahead of Valentine’s Day

Gifts’ prices skyrocket ahead of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is tomorrow, and a number of retailers are offering  bouquets of roses as well as other gifts items to customers looking to mark the occasion but at substantial prices.

Cecilia Agu is the Public Relations Officer of  an online store in Lagos , she said Valentine’s Day is her busiest day of the year.

“So far it’s not too bad. Mostly the day before and that day, I have a lot of last minute pick-ups,” said Agu, adding that purchasing them last minute costs more. Agu said prices for Valentine items can be five times higher around Valentine’s Day than at other times of the year.

Normally, the price for a dozen roses in a pack is about N4,500 according to Agu but it goes up as much as N22,500 in some top shops because of the season.

Those looking for other affordable options can try  their neighbourhood supermarkets or grocery stores; they will get what they pay for. “Grocery stores tend to have them all bunched in a piece of cellophane sitting in baskets and on shelves,” he said.

Not all gifts’ prices go up during the season, said Tomiwa Oladele of Kaymu.com, another  online store. She said for instance, chocolate is priced the same year-round. The only difference this time is that they are hardly placed in rectangle boxes, they come mainly in heart shapes.

  • ‘Ministry must not be on gifts’

‘Ministry must not be on gifts’

Bishop Humphrey Erumaka is the General Overseerof Word Base Assembly. He spoke with Yetunde Oladeinde about life in the ministry, challenges and the forthcoming crusade tagged My unbeatable God.

How has it been running your church for over twenty years?

The church clocked20 years in 2014 and it has been a wonderful experience. When we started, we were in a smaller church but we are now in this magnificent building.

We have two other branches in Ejigbo and Magodo in Lagos. In addition, work is in progress in Lekki and we have more expanse of land.

We also have branches in Owerri and Umuahia. In the ministry, I have travelled to all the continents of the world except Russia.

We have also supported missionary works all over the world. For us, the word of God has kept our church.

We have stood on the clear veracity of the word. I believe that the ministry is not founded on gifts but the word of God.

When did the call come for you?

I trained as a journalist and practised. In 1988, God called me to full time ministry.

For the first six years, I travelled for the ministry and erected a building where we started from. The word of God is progressing and I never felt like quitting at any point but felt things could get better. Ministry is a journey of faith; you can’t do much without him showing up.

As an ex-journalist, how many Christian books have you written?

I have written ten researched books. One of them titled Restoring mandate dignity won the triumphant award in North Carolina. The latest called Book of errors won another award. One of my classics is titled Divine power deposits and the best is called Sustainable friendship.

Interestingly, one individual has printed over 12,000 copies and shared free.

What are some of the challenges in the ministry?

Most of the common challenges are meeting up budget to schedule project dates starring at you. If you start trusting Him,

He would not abandon you midway.

How would you describe the state of the nation at the moment?

The situation appears unstable especially regarding the presidential elections in parts where Boko Haram has exercised damage.

It is more of a national disaster. I have been to top clergy meetings where we donated money in good measure to send to our brothers in the north. We are doing our best but how much can you help a man who has lost house, family and more?

When there is peace, things would be restored. There is war, whatever you give is a relief. We need the crisis in the north to stop and we must stop politicising it.

Despite the fact that there are many churches, unrighteousness is still the order of the day. Why is this so?

That is not in the absolute sense. Put the other way, you can imagine what would have happened if there are no churches. People do not need the church to be righteous. You have the positional righteousness which you receive from Christ as a free gift. The Bible says he that is righteous doeth good and has right consciousness.

A Muslim can be right conscious but that does not give him the positional consciousness. When a people in a nation are righteous, then righteousness exalts a nation.

A lot of people have the positional righteousness but you have to teach them to be right conscious.

What projects are you working on at the moment?

At the moment, we are working on our annual festival of power and prayer crusade, which will take place from 4th to 11th January. It is not all about the church but the community.

It is a period when we open our doors to members of the public. Over the years, a number of testimonies abound to the extent that it is now the community that demands for it. The theme for the next edition of the programme is tagged  My unbeatable God.

Our God never fails. We have done it for six years and it is usually a time to wait on God to start the year on a positive note. It is better to wait on the Lord because if you do not do it HIS way, you may go round looking for what God has placed just next door  to you.

Prayer is a two-way thing and it is better to pray and ask for direction. The programme is interdenominational and we have a number of speakers that include Sam Ihenacho from Enugu; Pastor Diallo from Canada and friends from  within the country.

For music, we have people like Frank Edwards, Sharon and David Moore for our all praise night on Friday. In terms of security everything is intact; we have surveillance gadgets, police and vigilance groups involved.

What are some of the testimonies from previous programmes?

Over the years, we have had a number of cases of healing; declarations are made in terms of God’s  blessings and breakthroughs. A number of people who have been married without children come the following year with their own children.

We also have cases of those who did not come to the programme but they were touched in their homes as well as those who built properties within the year.

Of course, there are also testimonies about the testimonies about the baptism of the Holy Spirit  and people who also got clear cut instructions that led to relocation.

If you are the president of Nigeria, what  would you do differently?

The greatest challenge in Nigeria is poverty and it is orchestrated by corruption. Nigerians are  not lazy but the opportunities and facilities are not favourable.

In China, people are running factories from their garage but here we have issues with electricity. This leads to restiveness and makes our youth available tools.

  • ‘Campaign gifts should be discouraged’

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Kunle Oyeyemi, has described the distribution of rice, cooking oil, bags of beans, kerosene and other food and household items to the electorate by a political party in Osun State as “open bribery”.

Speaking with reporters in Osogbo, the state capital, Oyeyemi said the trend should be discouraged because it poses great danger to democracy.

He said: “This trend is more peculiar to Nigeria and I believe it is tantamount to direct and open bribery, which is against electoral and other laws of the land.”

Oyeyemi urged the people not to be tricked into giving up their voter cards for a stipend, adding that their voter cards are “means to a profitable political end”.

He said: “It is common knowledge in Osun State that the campaign team of an opposition party is aggressively buying voter cards from potential voters. This is a manifestation of anxiety resulting from their realisation of the challenge they face in this election.

“I warn the people of Osun State not to sell their voter cards. The card is their power to decide who rules them. People should also be advised not to engage in a fight or argue with security operatives invited to provide security during the election.

“The party in question now resorts to all sorts of desperate efforts, including disenfranchising as many as possible members and supporters of the APC. It goes about buying voter cards. My warning to everyone is that under no reason – gift or threat – should any one give his or her voter card to anyone to take away or to copy personal information from the card.

“The democratic process and electioneering activities in this country, including the so-called politics of stomach infrastructure, is getting to a dangerous state, which is unlikely to support the country’s unity.”

  • Commissioner’s wife showers women with gifts

Commissioner’s wife showers women with gifts

The wife of Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Maureen Umanah, hosted women from Abak, Etim Ekpo and Ika Federal Constituency, to a Christmas celebration at her residence in Abak.

The event was attended women political leaders from the three local government areas.

Mrs. Umanah donated food items, including bags of rice and cash to the women, in appreciation for their steadfast support to Governor Godswill Akpabio and his wife, Ekaete, whom she described as her mother and role model.

She said she was inspired by the leadership qualities of the Governor and decided to emulate him by gathering women of her constituency to extend her love and care to them in the spirit of Christmas.

Mrs Umanah advised her fellow women, who are occupying positions of authority to borrow a leaf from the wife of the State Governor, Mrs Ekaete Unoma Akpabio, and use their good offices to promote the welfare of women, especially the widows.

She also lauded Governor Akpabio for extending his transformation programme to her hometown, Abak, as witnessed in the areas of construction of schools and bridges as well as provision of good road network, linking the city with neighbouring local government areas.

She acknowledged the fervent prayers from the women of Abak, Etim Ekpo and Ika Federal Constituency to the success of the present administration and solicited their continued cooperation for the government to deliver more dividends of democracy to the citizenry.

Apart from presenting the gifts, Mrs Umanah also took time to sing and dance with the women.

The donation was in the categories of widows and other women from each of the three local government areas.

Some of the beneficiaries described the philanthropic gesture by the wife of the Information Commissioner as the first of its kind in the political history of Abak, Etim Ekpo, Ika Federal Constituency.

The Assistant Financial Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mrs Victoria Ime Thomas, described Mrs. Umanah as a caring mother and sister, who has set a pace for other wives of government’s officials to follow.

For the PDP Woman Leader in Essien Udim, Mrs. Rosemary Anthony Umo, the Christmas gifts have further motivated women and reaffirmed their belief that they have a caring Commissioner and wife, who have the interests of women at heart.

On her part, the Woman Leader in Etim Ekpo, Mrs Obon-odo Ini Uko, eulogized Mrs Umanah for remembering women, stressing that they will forever remain grateful to her and her husband.

  • A season of gifts for constituents

A season of gifts for constituents

The lawmaker representing Aba South State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Nwogu Iheasimuo has given out cash and gift items worth over N25 million to members of his constituency.

For Hon. Iheasimuo’s close associates, he would have done more if he has the resources. For some of the beneficiaries, they never expected such a reward from their representative judged from their past experiences when past elected representatives from the area never remembered them.

Items distributed to some beneficiaries were 48 mini-refrigerators, 22 electric blenders, 16 deep chest freezers, 10 sewing machines, 50 standing fans, seven counter-top ice makers, 100 electric irons, 18 mini-water dispensers, over 200 pieces of wrappers, two horsepower split air conditioners, seven Volkswagen Passat cars to all the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ward chairmen and one L300 mini-bus for Etiti na Ohazu Youths. Widow to a deceased PDP chairman received N200, 000 cash prize for the family’s upkeep.

Though the event was meant to appreciate the electorate and some party officials in the constituency, it became a carnival-like when top politicians in the constituency and the state in their numbers were in attendance.

First to arrive was Hon. Uzo Azubuike, member representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives. He was represented by his wife. Speaker, Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu who was accompanied to the event by Hon. Blessing Nwagba, member representing Aba North State Constituency was also present.

Other dignitaries at the event were Chief Charles Ogbonna, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Abia State Governor, traditional rulers in Aba South and PDP’s South-East Legal Adviser, Barrister Thomas Nkoro, among other state and local government party officials.

Rt. Hon. Oko Chukwu was impressed by Iheasimuo’s gesture, even as he said it was the first time in Aba North when a member of the state legislature would be such generous to the people of the constituency.

The Speaker, who described the donor as the only member of the House that has always performed his duties diligently, urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the items.

He said: “Elected representatives are becoming responsible to the people than in the previous years. Hon. Iheasimuo is a blessing to the people of Aba South Local Government Area. He is not only successful in attending to his peoples’ needs; he is also successful in the House through his contributions. This is the first time in the history of the local government that a member of the state legislature is giving out such gifts to his people.

“His philanthropy has given him popularity that he once stole the show from me in a programme we attended together in my own constituency.”

Chief Charles Ogbonna, Abia State Deputy Chief of Staff said the lawmaker has set ‘a dangerous’ precedent that will be difficult for his successors to surpass, even as he urged other lawmakers to emulate the legacy the member of the House has set.

Earlier in his remarks, Hon. Iheasimuo said it became necessary that he thanked the people who gave him mandate to represent their interest in the state House of Assembly, adding that the gifts were not distributed based on party affiliation but on the basis of reaching out to the people of his constituency no matter their party leanings.

Some of the beneficiaries expressed their happiness. They thanked Hon. Iheasimuo for his generosity of spirit. They promised their continued support for the lawmaker.

Eaglets skipper set for house, car gifts

History-making Eaglets skipper Musa Muhammed and Bello Zaharadin are in line for house and car gifts by Kano State Government.

The Kano Government will host the Eaglets stars from the state on December 3 at a grand reception in Kano.

Muhammed scored three goals from his right fullback position and Zaharadin formed a superb central defence partnership with Aliyu Abubakar as Nigeria won a record fourth U-17 World Cup in the UAE earlier this month.

Top government officials have already contacted the players as regards this reception and there is a likelihood the players will receive enduring gifts ranging from houses to cars.

Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso rewarded Kano Pillars with cash and cars gifts when they won the Nigeria league championship two seasons.

Cross River State Government have already rewarded the Eaglets with houses in Calabar, while Niger and Imo States have donated plots of land to the team.
