  • Building collapse: How girl, 9, died on birthday eve

A victim of Saturday’s building collapse in Agege, Lagos State, would have turned nine yesterday, if not for the tragedy.

Sherifat Olalere was one of the two victims of the collapsed building at 9, Abeje Street, Markaz, Agege.

She was said to be drinking water in the kitchen when it collapsed on her.

The other victim, Toyin Ogundimu, 35, died when the kitchen wall fell on her. Ogundimu lived in the house with her husband and children.

Sherifat’s father, The Nation learnt, had told her and her siblings to stay in the mosque opposite their house till he returned home.

The late Sherifat went home to take water when the building fell.

A resident, who identified herself as Funmi, said Sherifat’s father told his children to stay in the mosque all day.

“I learnt that Sherifat’s father told all his children not to stay in the house. He told them to stay in the mosque which is opposite the house; maybe he already sensed danger. Sherifat  and her siblings were all eating in the mosque when she went into the house to drink water; It is unfortunate that that was the last time we would all see her,” she said.

A woman, who was washing clothes,  ran out when she saw the wall coming down.

The building was sealed off yesterday; all the occupants have moved out.  Many gathered in groups discussing what happened in hushed tones. A tenant, Mustapha Salaudeen, was injured.

One of the occupants, Tayo Adekunle, said it was unfortunate that the collapse led to the death of her neighbours.

“I cooked at the kitchen on Friday; I also had my bath in the bathroom on Saturday morning before going to work. I was surprised to receive a call while I was at work on Saturday morning that my house has collapsed.  I am  yet to get over the shock.”

She said she never noticed anything wrong with the building since she moved into it about a year ago.

Adekunle said: “The only thing I know is that before I left the house that Saturday morning, I saw a bricklayer who was meant to fix some things in the building.  I did not know what the bricklayer was billed to do, but I was told that it was while the bricklayer was still trying to gather all he would need to fix the house that it collapsed.

“It is so painful that Sherifat is dead because she was meant to celebrate her nine years birthday today (yesterday).  She stays here with her parents and four other siblings. Everybody living here has left.”

A neighbour, Muhammed Aminu, said he was among those who took Ogundimu’s body for burial.

“When I heard that this building has collapsed and led to Ogundimu’s death, I was in a sad state because Ogundimu, her husband and children attend the same mosque with me (Tijani Mosque). Being a Muslim, we had to bury her immediately in a burial ground in Agege here.”

He described the late Ogundimu as a nice person, adding that the entire family is good.

“She and her husband would always be at the mosque at every praying time with their children,” Aminu said.

Nkechi, who is childless, adopted Faith and took her to Onitsha, Anambra State, when she was eight.

But the scars on Faith’s body show that she might be a victim of inhuman treatment. She has shocking scars and injuries all over her body, including bloodied eyes and mouth.

Faith, yesterday, gave a graphic description of her ordeal in the hands of Nkechi. According to her, she was always tortured with sticks, hot iron and other dangerous weapons for being stubborn.

She added that her mistress always insert stick into her private part, chain her, and she only eats once in a day (in the evenings).

She said: “Nkechi Bartholomew my madam disfigured me like this. I was a full-fledged human being when she took me to Onitsha, Anambra State. She inserted her fingers in my eyes and inflicted these injuries on them.

“She usually put stones inside my mouth. I don’t normally brush my teeth and since I cannot do it, I must always suffer for it.

“The husband has never beaten me, he is always angry when the wife tortures me. At times, he will summon courage and quarrel the wife because the wife is bigger than him.

“My madam would lock me inside a dark room after beating me up. I was taken home by my madam’s sister who told her to take me home but she refused. She would tell me that nothing will happen if I die, that she will spend her money and regain freedom if she is arrested if anything happens to me.

“I was attending school in the village before she took me to Onitsha. But in the four years I spent in Onitsha, I have not gone to school once. I only eat in the evening every day.

“My madam would insert stick into my private part, saying I am stubborn. After beating me up, she will bring two gallons and placed on my two legs. She will tie my legs on them and insert stick into my private part.”

The Head of Child Development of the ministry, Godwin Igwe, described Faith’s torture as “inhuman, degrading, torturing and tormenting”.

He said her actions were contrary to the 1999 Constitution as amended in 2011.

He said: “No human being or child, for any reason, should be subjected to inhuman treatment. But this child was subjected to more. This is a pure case of attempted murder, attempted annihilation, snuffing of life and debilitating. Right now, she cannot use one of her hands, she is a disabled person. The head has been mutilated, she has been disfigured.”

Meanwhile, the suspect is at large while her sister who brought the victim home has been arrested.

NAN learnt that the Imam is a neighbour of the girl’s parents.

The girl said the men usually gave her N500 and warned her not to tell anybody.

“They always gave me N500 whenever I returned from school and hawked. They forced me into it.

Girl, lover boy dump 3-week-old baby

A girl and her lover boy who allegedly dumped their three-week-old baby girl by the roadside were yesterday brought before an Upper Area Court 3 in Jos.

  • If I weren’t a girl

    If I weren’t a girl

If I weren’t a girl, heavens knows what would become of me.

If I weren’t a girl, I would have probably come as a boy, an animal or even as an insect…these would have been disappointing!

If I weren’t a girl, just how do I become a virtuous woman?

If I weren’t a girl, there won’t be chances of becoming a mother nor a home builder.

Yes, I am a girl, bold and beautiful. Girls, never allow anybody bring down your self-esteem. Your playing small does not serve the world; there is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that the next person wouldn’t feel insecure.

If anyone does rise up again and build it. Though you’re prone to much negativity like domestic violence, trafficking and all sorts, it doesn’t change your being. Stand up for what’s right, fight for what’s good.

What a man can do, a woman can do better. In other words, what a boy can do, a girl can do better. So don’t let nobody tell you that your education ends in the kitchen because it never started there and won’t end there.

Women around the world are becoming Presidents, Ministers, Senators…yours shouldn’t be an exception. Heads up, chin up, and be ready to go up.

She is very productive with whatever is in her care; give her a house and she gives you a home, give her semen, she gives you children, groceries and she turns it to food. You’re a nation builder; don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

  • Because you a girl

    Because you a girl

Because you’re a girl, you should be happy

You should be tough, made of the toughest materials

Soft, penetrable, ludicrous, yet strong and firm as a rock!

Because you’re a girl, you should not withstand the storm, you should be the storm

Because you’re a girl, You Don’t Have to Be Pretty.

You don’t owe prettiness to anyone.

Not to your boyfriend/spouse/partner, not to your co-workers, especially not to random men on the street.

You don’t owe it to your mother, you don’t owe it to your children, you don’t owe it to civilization in general.

Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked ‘female’

Because you’re a girl, you shouldn’t hate yourself, so that’s why you need to be very brave

Because you’re a girl, you should not let them shut you up, you should talk, scream, shout! Let your voice be heard

Because you’re a girl, You should have aspirations, beautiful solid aspirations, untainted by culture and its nuances

You’re supposed to be made of courage, sacrifice, determination, commitment, toughness, heart, talent and guts!
