  • NGO gives free medicare

About 2000 epileptic patients across the country are to benefit from a year-long free medical treatment programme in Anambra State, under the Nigeria Epilepsy Care Advancement Programme (NECAP).

The treatment is being sponsored by Rise Clinic, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), founded by Godwin and Patricia Okeke Foundation, in conjunction with Rise Global Health Initiative (RGHI).

It kicked with a one-day sensitisation seminar at Neni in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.

A Neurosurgeon and Medical Director of Neuroscience Programme Development at Eden Medical Center, California, United States of America (USA), Dr. Mrs. Edie Zusman, in her lecture identified the cause of epilepsy as a synchronised electrical discharge from the brain.

She added that EEG, a test showed that seizures start in the brain which causes shaking of the arms and legs. She described epilepsy as a common problem. Zusman noted that one in hundred persons have epilepsy around the world (California same as Anambra) among children, adults, older people, men and women, adding that it is not contagious.

The chief host and founder of Rise Clinic, Adazi-Ani, Chief Godwin Ubaka Okeke of GUO Motors Limited, expressed gratitude that his third son, Dr. Emeka Okeke who read medicine in USA and is practising there at the moment, picked interest in helping the poor masses, hence the establishment of Rise Clinic.

Okeke recalled that by this time last year, the clinic had diagnosed and treated more than 500 patients with various ailments free of charge, mostly the down trodden who have no means of going to public hospitals for medical attention.

Others who spoke at the seminar included Dr. John Obegolu, an American-based Neurosurgeon from Anambra State; Bayan Yaktieen, a pharmacist and Director of Academic Services, Rise Global Health Initiative and Sani Mohammed, an army officer attached to Nigerian Army Medical Unit at the 302 Military Cantonment, Onitsha, who advised the masses against stigmatisation of epileptic patients.

  • Fayemi gives N300m to 82 communities

Fayemi gives N300m to 82 communities

Eighty-two communities in Ekiti State yesterday got cheques totalling N300 million to undertake community projects under the Self-Help Programme of the state government.

Presenting the cheques to the communities in Oye- Ekiti, Governor Kayode Fayemi said the gesture is in fulfilment of the resolutions reached with the community leaders in the state during the stakeholders’ meetings held last year.

He added that the self-help project is in line with the government’s commitment to embarking on development projects with the people.

Representatives of the benefiting communities and their traditional rulers were in a joyful mood as they filed out to receive their cheques. Many of the town unions defied the early morning rainfall, came out in full traditional regalia and masquerades, which turned the ceremony into a carnival.

Governor Fayemi, who presented the cheques, assisted by the National Chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Chief Bisi Akande and a former governor, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, said the communities had at the meetings submitted their priority self-help projects for grants and are getting the N300 million grant for the completion of the ongoing, abandoned and uncompleted self-help projects as well as provision of boreholes, access culverts, among others, in the benefiting communities.

He assured that every community in the state, no matter the population, would benefit from the grants-in-aid programme of the administration before the end of the year.

He said the Ministry of Rural Development and Community Empowerment was created to focus on development in the rural areas.

Fayemi said: “As part of the efforts of the present administration to bring development to the rural communities where over 75 per cent of the populace live, the Ministry of Rural Development and Community Empowerment was created in January.

“Unlike the previous administration, all the stakeholders in the state were involved in the preparation of the year 2013 budget, and we have adopted the zero budgeting method as is being practised all over the world.

“The opinions of the various strata/segments of the people in the state were sought before the 2013 budget was prepared, using a dynamic bottom-up approach.”

The governor asserted that besides the grants being handed out to the 82 communities, government is undertaking other rural development and community empowerment projects to the tune of N3.2 billion spanning rural access roads to farm settlements, another round of 5km roads in each of the 16 local governments, ultra-modern markets, provision of hand dug wells and solar operated boreholes as well as construction of bridges and culverts.

Fayemi added that the government is revitalising cooperative development by entering into partnership with the Bank of Agriculture with a view to using the cooperative federalism model as an alternative vehicle for reaching grassroots communities and local socio-economic activities.

To this end, the government would shore up the cooperative societies with N300 million, the Bank of Agriculture would provide another N300 million.

On the self-help projects, the governor appealed to stakeholders in the communities, especially the traditional rulers, to supervise, monitor and evaluate the projects in their communities and report as appropriate to the relevant government officials, who are expected to supervise and monitor the projects on a regular basis.

He urged them to see the projects as their own, saying this concept of communal ownership is a fulfilment of his promise to do government “with the people and not for them.”

The representative of Osi Ekiti, one of the benefiting communities, Mr. Peter Agbelusi, lauded the Dr. Fayemi administration for embarking on the self-help programme, which he said has not only given communities the sense of participation in government but also facilitated the execution of their priority projects “without going around to beg for assistance.”

Agbelusi, who described the gesture as unprecedented, assured that his community would make judicious use of the grant on the renovation and completion of the town hall.

Benefiting communities got grants between N2 million and N7.5 million, depending on their proposed project.

The programe, which was dubbed, Ajose Eyiyato, was attended by the Deputy Governor, Prof. Modupe Adelabu; wife of the Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi; Speaker of the House of Assembly, Dr. Adewale Omirin; former governor, Otunba Adebayo; National Chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Chief Akande; Deputy Speakers of Houses of Assembly in the Southwest, members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, members of Ekiti State Executive Council, traditional rulers and chairmen of local governments.

  • Jonathan gives NRC nod to take over property nationwide

The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) management said it has obtained President Goodluck Jonathan’s permission to take possession of its landed property.

NRC’s Managing Director, Mr. Adeseyi Sijuwade, broke the news yesterday.

He said the move is part of efforts to reposition and deepen NRC’s capacity to deliver on the Jonathan administration’s transformation agenda for the transportation sector.

Sijuwade said with the approval, the stage is set for the corporation to take possession of its property scattered across the nation.

He warned trespassers, government agencies, individuals, groups and corporate bodies to stay clear of NRC land because, according to him, “no efforts will be spared to recover the land or property belonging to the NRC.”

The Managing Director said part of the immediate gains of the presidential directive is the corporation’s redevelopment plan for its Iddo Territorial Headquarters.

Mr. Sijuwade added that the Iddo Terminus would soon have a multi-storey ultra modern shopping mall with two floors dedicated as car parks. It would also have a post for the Railway Police Command.

He said the terminus redevelopment would be the first in the phases that would soon be replicated in other major railway stations across the country, adding that when they fully come on stream, the old, derelict appearance of the corporation would be replaced with beautiful structures that could compete with any successful enterprise anywhere in the world.

Sijuwade said the new Iddo Terminus could be remodelled, using the Public/Private Partnership (PPP) platform, adding that the PPP remains one good way of attracting private sector investment to push the frontier of efficient service in the railway.

He said he is championing the involvement of the private sector in the railway services.

He urged investors to partner NRC in the task of delivering efficient and cutting edge rail services in the country.

  • Thompson’s return gives El-Kanemi hope

    Thompson’s return gives El-Kanemi hope

The return of Thompson Ezekiel to Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) club, El-Kanemi Warriors has lifted the spirit of the club gaffer, Zachary Baraje.

The Warriors struggled to score in their first 270 minutes of top flight football against Nasarawa United, Wikki Tourists and Enyimba this season.

Baraje’s men had to wait till about 329 minutes of league football before Haruna Babalo got their first goal of the season. The El-Kanemi head coach has now identified the big forward as the solution to his team’s goalscoring problems this term.

“After seven games I have recognised where our problem lies. It is early in the season to press the panic button just yet. We have a wonderful group of players but up front we have been deficient in terms of scoring goals.

“When the transfer window opens (by Week 9) we will bring in new players. Already some of them are with us. One is Thompson Ezekiel who I’ve watched in two training sessions now and I’m convinced he is what we want. I wasn’t with the team when he played in the (Nigeria) National League but I’m impressed with his performance,” said Baraje, who joined the Warriors from Dolphins this term.

Ezekiel agreed to join Enugu Rangers at the start of this season after his performance at the 2012 Federation Cup attracted interests from top clubs including Cameroon side, CotonSport.

  • Obi gives police armoured cars

    Obi gives police armoured cars

Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has handed over 50 armoured vehicles to the police.

Inspector-General of Police Muhammed Abubakar took delivery of the vehicles on behalf of the state command.

The gesture was warmly received, but it was indeed one of the governor’s strategies to curb crime in the state.

For instance, there has not been any reported case of violent armed robbery or kidnapping in the state recently.

The state was peaceful and calm during the Yuletide. People who returned from Christmas holidays moved freely from one community to the other.

Newsextra gathered that over 300 people were kidnapped before the Obi administration started demolishing the hideouts of kidnappers and their associates. This action dislodged many kidnappers.

The fear before Christmas was that many would not return home as a result of increased kidnapping and violent robbery that characterised the Southeast. The Campaign for Democracy rated the region, including Anambra, a kidnappers’ zone. Governor Obi reassured that the state would be safe and calm.

To ensure that his promise to the people was fulfilled, the governor embarked on a comprehensive mobilisation of the citizens to be part of security efforts. He engaged them in a series of meetings with security operatives. That paid off as many citizens hailed the hitch-free Christmas and New Year festivities.

Many residents are quick to attribute the absence of crime within the period to Obi’s effective strategies on security.

A community leader, Chief Anthony Agidigbo Oguejiofor and a publisher, Mr. Ethel Uyanna had congratulated Governor Obi on giving the people ‘another peaceful Christmas season.’

Chief Oguejiofor and Uyanna said that the governor’s extraordinary commitment to issues of security of lives and property in the state had resulted in reduction of crime rate over the years.

“However, this state of protection is better appreciated in this festive period. He said: “In December every year, the governor gives N2m to each of the 177 communities in Anambra State for security arrangements and palliative work on rural roads. By sustaining that arrangement, he has achieved results.”

They further observed that this was consolidated with the governor’s empowerment of unemployed youths.

“Those who would have been idle and a threat to society have been meaningfully engaged in one form of work or the other. We commend the governor not just for this sense of security but also for restoring people’s confidence in government.

“It is clear to us that businesses are growing in the state. More companies are opening shop and employing people. The number of hotels in Awka alone has tripled in the past two years. This would not have been possible in a state of insecurity.”

They therefore called for increased support for the administration, noting that if the people contribute their quota, governor Obi would be able to do more for the people.

The Inspector-General of Police Muhammed Abubakar received over 50 armoured vehicles from the Anambra State government for improved security in the state.

This, Governor Obi said, was immediate fulfilment of his promise to make security of lives and property the priority of his government in 2013 as contained in his New Year broadcast.

According to Obi, three of the vehicles are armoured security vehicles while 50 of the vehicles are patrol vans.

Presenting the security vehicles to the IGP Abubakar at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia Obi said this brings to over 350 which he has so far presented to security organisations in the state.

Obi said that other security agencies would receive theirs. He assured the police of continued support from Anambra State.

He said: “May I re-assure the Inspector-General of Police and the entire police that Anambra State will continue to work with them for the security of the state and the country at large. We enjoin all Nigerians to do same.”

Explaining the reason for the gesture, Obi said it was borne out of his belief that the state needed security to sustain her achievements and record, which he said will not be possible in an atmosphere of insecurity.

Earlier, the Inspector-General of Police who said he was in the state to appraise security situation, received the keys to the vehicles from Governor Obi. He thanked him for his commitment to security, saying that each time the governor visited him in Abuja, it must be on how to improve the security of his people. He said he was also happy coming to Anambra State because the state has remained an example of how other states ought to support security agencies for the good of the country.

He also commended Obi for his contributions to the re-positioning of the police through his membership of the Police Funding Committee.

He said that under governor Obi, the state had moved from her ugly past and had become more peaceful, secured, stable, progressive and safe.

While commending Obi and the Anambra Police Command for their efforts at securing the lives and property of the people, the IGP said that the police have posted more 500 of her personnel to Anambra State. He also hinted the possibility of establishing more area commands in the state for efficient and effective policing.

He also reiterated his commitment to a safer Anambra State. He said that going by the nature and extent of support the police in Anambra were enjoying from the governor, there was no reason for them to fail.

Later, Governor Obi took the Inspector-General of Police to Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company, Nnewi, where he inspected the plant, including the 300 security patrol vehicles ordered and paid for by Anambra State government to be distributed to the communities in the state.

Speaking to the press, the Inspector-General, who said he was impressed by what he saw, said that he would look at the vehicles manufactured at the industry in terms of suitability for security purposes for them to patronise it.

NOVEMBER 14 friendly: Keshi gives Euro Eagles three conditions

NFF scribe Musa Amadu has revealed to SportingLife that the friendly match between the Super Eagles and their Venezuelan counterparts will still go ahead on November 14 despite the Hurricane Sandy that is rocking the United States of America.

The match is slated for Miami, Florida. In an exclusive interview, Amadu said: ‘ I don’t think anything would stop the match for now. All the agreements have been signed by the parties involved, and they are looking forward to the encounter which we will use to prepare the Nigerians for the Africa Nations Cup holding in South Africa.”

Amadu expressed optimism that the Hurricane Sandy would have subsided before then.

It would be recalled that the three major New York Airports have been closed since Monday as result of the natural disaster. The hurricane swept through the East Coast of United States, leaving scores of people dead, and millions without power.
