  • Glamour as District rewards workers, pupils

It was glamour at a level never seen before in the history of education merit awards programmes in Lagos State when Education District I honoured deserving workers, retirees, schools and pupils. It was at a star-studded programme at the Excellence Hotel and Conference Centre, Ogba, penultimate Wednesday.

The banquet hall of the hotel was tastefully furnished – a far cry from the Government College, Agege school hall that had hosted previous editions of the honours programme. The guests dressed the part – with principals of the over 300 junior and senior secondary schools in the district turning up in suits and matching ties for men, and scarves for women.

The officiating of the programme was also different.  Unlike in the past when awardees were known before the event, there was a surprise element in this year’s edition.  In each category, the names of shortlisted candidates were listed before the winners were announced.  Once announced, the plaques were borne to the stage by pupils from various schools in the district who had performed well in academics, competition, sports and other areas of life.

The brain behind the colourful event was Dr Olufolayimika Ayandele, the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary (TGPS) of the district, who said the programme was made possible because of the support of key stakeholders in the state, including the government, Hon Yinka Ogundimu, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, as well as Zenith Bank, Arik Plc and MTN, among others.

Dr Ayandele got them to sponsor various awards – the most glamourous of which was two Arik Airline return tickets to any West African country as well as N100,000 spending money presented to the best principals, junior and senior categories.

The prizes were picked by Mrs Adeniyi Ladigbolu of Keke Junior High School; and Mrs Modupe Akinbami of Ijaiye Housing Estate Senior High School, Ifako-Ijaiye.

The best school award, which Dr Ayandele said was endowed by Ogundimu, went to Iju Junior Grammar School.  She directed that the plaque be placed in a vantage position so that pupils and workers can feel they contributed to the success story and work hard to maintain it.

Iju Junior Grammar School also won the best Vice Principal Award (Mrs Edema Titilayo), and the best teacher award, junior category (Mrs  Philips Taiwo); while Abibat Mogaji Millennium Senior High School, Agege, produced the best teacher in senior category, Mr Toluwalope Odusanya.

Pupils recognised included Tobiloba Opadotun of Vetland Junior Grammar School, who had the best result in the 2015 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE); Calistus Okonkwo of Ijaiye Housing Estate Senior High School, the best candidate in the 2015 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

A new category of award, the Lifetime Achievement Award, was presented to Mrs Florence Ogunfidodo, Dr Ayandele’s predecessor.

In her address, Dr Ayandele praised the pupils, teachers and other administrative workers for contributions to the district’s success – measured by the number of awards the school had received in recent times.

The TG/PS said she met a high standard when she was posted to the district about three months ago, and is working hard to build on it.

“By the time I got here, I knew I had a high standard to meet up,” she said.

Speaking on the selection process for the awards, Dr Ayandele said the selection panel only accepted online applications.

“We had 250 applications online for the best teacher award.  About 125 were screened because they had evidences to back their applications. One thing is certain, all teachers are valuable. Everybody has contributed positively, but today we are celebrating everybody and public schools, to showcase that public school is a great place for our children and that anybody coming in to work would have its own benefit, so everybody is a winner,” she said.

In her keynote address, the Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, urged the recipients to keep up the good work by working even harder.

“The recognition you have been accorded today should continue to spur you and others to exhibit uncommon sense of responsibility and greater commitment to duty.  See the award as a challenge to do more and be committed to what you know how to do best,” said Adebule, who was represented by Mrs Ajoke Gbeleyi, Director, Private Education and Special Programmes, Lagos State Ministry of Education.

Praising the teachers, Ogundimu said they cannot be rewarded enough for their contributions.  He however urged them to do more to reduce the number of pupils that drop out.

“We need more from you.  We have a lot of social problems.  Many children are running away from home/school.  We have problem with pickpockets; some have graduated to armed robbery.  If only we can catch them young and train them, it will reduce the money government has to spend on security,” he said.

Ogundimu was presented with a self portrait produced by Daniel Ogunde, a special needs pupil attending the Sanngo Inclusive Junior Secondary School.

  • Glamour as UNILAG honours Osinbajo, five govs

Glamour as UNILAG honours Osinbajo, five govs

Last Saturday was different at the University of Lagos (UNILAG). The array of exotic cars, presence of heavy security operatives and the buzz around the Multipurpose Halls, were signs that high-level dignitaries were on campus.

It was the institution’s Alumni Homecoming programme, which the Vice Chancellor, Prof Rahamon Bello, described as “historic”.

Bello was glad that at his request, the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, Governors, Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos), Ibrahim Dankwambo (Gombe), Udom Emmanuel (Akwa-Ibom) and Willie Obiano (Anambra) as well as the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Sir Ude Chukwu, all alumni of the institution, came together under one roof to mingle as alumni of UNILAG.

It was a night of reminisce, which left nostalgic feelings in the minds of the dignitaries, who were decorated with the distinguished alumni award of the university.

In the words of the Vice President, “Of course it is only the University of Lagos that can bring us all together as we are today, from different political ideas and platforms.”

Speaking in the red and gold themed hall, Osinbajo, said UNILAG moulded him into his current status.

He said: “There is nothing nobler; nothing that gives one greater joy than the recognition of one’s colleagues, friends and associates and I think that this particular recognition is one that is very dear to my heart. The University of Lagos has been a place, which has in so many ways defined my life. I started to teach here in November 1981. And from that time, till 2013, practically every step of the way, the university has influenced my life in one way or the other; and I dare say that even today, the first thing that is known about me is that I am, not was, a University teacher.”

The Vice President also expressed his value for tertiary institutions as a place of great inspiration and ideas that build the nation.

“It (being a teacher) is a place of great pride for me because I very well believe that the university is a multimedia place of ideas and inspiration and whatever it is that we can contribute to making that the case, we must do it. In the years when I was here as a lecturer in the 1980s, those were the years when there was great inspiration and ideas.

Of course they were the years of the dialectical tension between the Materialist School and the Ajere School and the great thinking and the great debate that went on in political philosophical terms. You had to be defined one way or the other in those days. You could not be neutral. You had to belong to one side or the other of the argument. If you were a law teacher and you presented a paper, the socialist school, the materialists would attack the paper, not just on its merits or by way of argument but the philosophical foundation would be questioned; its whole thinking would be questioned and by the time many of them would be through with you, you would rethink several of your ideas.

“The University must continue to be a place of ideas. The future of the nation depends on the thinking of those in the university. It depends on the great ideas that emanate from a place like this… and the importance of great teachers. I remember an evening in 1977 when I walked in to a jurisprudence class and this was the first time I was coming across the gentleman called, at the time, Dr Akin Oyebode, now Prof Akin Oyebode.  There he was teaching on the sociological school and as I recall the occasion, he did not have any prepared notes, though he reminds me that he had cue cards which I do not remember seeing. But he spoke for about an hour and half on the sociological school of jurisprudence. By the time he was through, I made up my mind that I would teach law and that for me was the inspiration that led to my coming to the University to teach law four years after,” He said.

Also, representatives of the UNILAG Students’ Union chanted solidarity songs to usher his decoration.

Speaking after his own decoration, Ambode recalled values he learnt while studying Accounting at Unilag.

“My commitment is such that every day of my life is dedicated to the service of Lagos State based on what I have learnt in UNILAG,” said Ambode.

Obiano on his part promised to help their alma mater.

He said: “Of all the awards I have received in my life, this is the best and I promise this will spur me to do more. I also promise to assist the university in any way I can when I am approached… I also appeal to all of us that let the word that opens all doors be ‘UNILAG.’ From today, anytime you want to see me and you say UNILAG, the door would be opened to you.”

  • Glamour of green world carnival unveiled

It was a night of glitz and stars. It was also a night of songs and dances. Members of the carnival bands of the Rivers State came in their full costumes. People became excited as some of Nigeria’s finest home video icons sauntered into the banquet hall of Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt. There was Monalisa Chinda, Ini Edo, Mike Ezuruonye, Norbert Young and many others.

But it was not all about the screen; it was also a display of all that was good in the culture of the riverine people. There were the voluptuous and beautiful adorned maidens in their traditional regalia. They were bedecked in huge beads, some as huge as the arm of a child and other colourful attire.

It is a night like this that one truly appreciates the richness of Nigeria’s diverse culture.

The night was for tourism and all had gathered to unveil a tourism product that is geared towards wooing local and inbound tourists, and in the process to celebrate all that is good in our culture and environment.

It was for the unveiling of the theme and logo for this year’s edition that the Rivers State Tourism Development Agency (RSTDA) decided to explore seriousness, even in the revelry of a boisterous street party. The theme for this year is the Green World Edition. The thought process that led to this, according to Dr. Sam Dede, is the efforts of the tourism board to engage in sustainable tourism. According to him, over the years, the environment has been degraded by the activities of man, hence the need to engage in conscious efforts to make a change. What better opportunity than to pass across this message through the boisterous revelry of the CARNIRIV, a fiesta that has the whole state and beyond glued to it.

The Rivers State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Nabbs Imegwu, talked about the what the night was all about: “As Africans and especially as Rivers people powering the cultural base and resource of Nigeria, we do have a lot of activities relating to our culture. When we say culture, it is not about masquerades. Ordinarily, we relate with culture as masquerades, but it goes far beyond that.

“We have a lot about our culture which basically and fundamentally refers to our customs and values within families, within communities and within societies. A lot of activities that hallmark the very essence of us as a people tend to be concentrated in the last quarter of the year. On behalf of the governor of this state and the deputy governor, I fully express their apologies for their inability to be here tonight.

“This is a state that has over time , especially in recent times, attached importance to the development of our rich economic potential and improved economy. It is not just the black gold, but for the fact that there are diverse rich elements within us, one of which is the rich cultural heritage that should and ought to be harnessed as a product of attractive tourism.

“This administration is aware of the fact that tourism perhaps ranks second to some other economic sector. We are, therefore, working towards that. We will do the best we can to headline the tourism products we have identified to assist in driving and expanding the economic space in Rivers State.

“The local government chairmen are very important in what we are doing; there cannot be CANIRIV without the local government chairmen. I say so because often times the chairmen have stood out as the anchor point for the first lap of out street parties. The street party is what carnival is about and it is two-pronged – we have the heritage float and the sea side floats. Majority of us are aware, but we have to say this for the benefit of all and for the benefit of the press and publicity.

“Our heritage street party is anchored on the very core value of our existence as a people. We use as a rallying point the local government unit which is the last unit of governance. And over the years in our experience to rejuvenate what we initiated in Nigeria, the first ever carnival in the country was initiated in this state. Now in our attempt to rejuvenate that, we have used the local government chairmen as the rallying point being the last point of formal government, formal administration to mobilize our people and till date, they have done resourcefully well.

“Many people see Nollywood as a local phenomenon, but except you travel wide, you would not appreciate how Nollywood has impacted globally, how much Nollywood has sold this country in the aspect of diplomacy and economy”.

Dr. Sam Dede, the Director–General, Rivers State Tourism Development Agency (RSTA), is used to glitz of the nights like this. But his was a sombre capture of what the essence of what the tourism board was trying to rekindle.

He said: “This is the second in the series of our strategic development of CARNIRIV Global branch. We have a five-year development plan, so we have one year down, and in the next four years, we are thinking that if you tell anybody in Australia about CARNIRIV, they will say yes I know about that carnival. It took place in the city of Port Harcourt. Last year, we had our centenary celebrations and we titled that carnival ‘Port Harcourt 100 Edition’.

“ So, we thought that we could use carnival to mobilize our people to realize the extent of damage that we have done to our environment and we begin to make amends towards righting the wrong. So the theme we chose for this year carnival is ‘Our Environment Bedrock For Sustainable Development’, for short ( Our Environment, Our Sustainance). We call it the ‘Green World Edition’, and we are hoping that at the end of the carnival season, even in our merriment and joyous dancing and singing, we will remember to do good for our environment before it gets worst than this. Incidentally, the world tourism day has the theme: Tourism and Water. And we are water people. We have conterminated our water and this is the time to get it right again .

“Ok, we want you to leave this place with this statement in your mind that our land is green, and we must celebrate this. We need to celebrate the greenness of our land with potential investment opportunities, lingering on the horizon and with the rest of the world, singing the now familiar tune of environmental sustainability.

“The time to join in order to utilise attendant opportunities is now. So even the papers that you use help in a way to deplict the environment, so we need to begin to get conscious and get involved. I will like to leave you with a statement by the president of the United State of America during his last visit to Africa. He said that we must teach our children to treasure what the earth gives us and nurture it for the next generation.

“I think the greatest gift that the people of this generation can give to the next generation is the extent of green green we can leave behind. It is so simple, it is no money, it is not gold, it is not silver, it is not diamond, but just leave some kind of green green for the future generation to inherit.

“So,during the carnival season, we are going to plant together. All the bands, RSTDA, all the ten bands in the free style parade from the 23 council areas are jointly going to plant one thousand trees to commemorate this edition of CANIRIV.

“Let’s look at the brands for CANIRIV this season. Last year, we introduced the Egelede, and it became an instant success at the carnival village, but this time around we are going to get a celebrity wrestler to be a guest at Egelede. Those of you who are diehard fans of wrestling like me, you are likely going to see one of those major wrestlers as a guest at our own traditional wrestling. If you love John Cena, if you love Undertaker, if you love Hoc Organ. Just pray for us, we will do it for you.

“CANIRIV Praise Jamz is also one other event to look out for. It is the carnival that opens the entire carnival season. We give all the praise to God. For those of us who go to church, those of you who believe in God, we will give you that. And for those of us who believe in the ancestors, we will also give the praise.

“The International Heritage Parade is one other event you should not miss. It is what we call the boat regatta. We have the Garden City Free Style Parade, and you can see all the beautiful colours here representing the ten bands of the CANIRIV brand. The entire carnival season will close with the World Peace Concert. Last year, we had an incredible sixty thousand viewership at Port Harcourt Liberation Stadium, and before we knew it, the police asked us to stop the show because the stadium was bursting. We had to stop it. So this time, we are making the preparation to accommodate more of the crowd. We will put huge mega screens outside so you would not need to come into the stadium.”

Gradually, the festival is becoming noticed and drawing support from ouside.

Former CEO, Notting Hill Carnival,London, Mr. Shabaka Thompson, said: “One thing we have achieved in CARNIRIV in London is that the project has become a forerunner at the front of cultural tourism in the United Kingdom, and we should take pride that Rivers State is leading that good example of how we can sell cultural tourism to the upside of this country and CANIRIV is a very good example of that for the efforts of RSTDA.

“ It was the first time in the 25-year existence or maybe they have won before, but they came first in their catergory and second overall in the carnival, and it boils down to the presence of that wonderful creative float and the masquerade that followed.

“What we have learnt as well is that in including the float and the music to Notting Hill, we are generating a particular interest for the whole of Nigeria, the whole of Africa. Afrobeat music was popular on the parade route because the parade route was used to the Caribbean calypso-sucar music. The introduction of the Afrobeat muscic has attracted a large flock of well-behaved Nigerians who are only too eager to jump behind the Afrobeat music. We intend to build that, we hope that will continue, that RSTDA and the government of Rivers State will see it neccssary to continue building this relationship with NottingHill.

“We at NottingHill welcome it. It has injected a new dimension into the carnival, and we want to make sure you continue to be leaders in this cultural, tourism development”.

It was not just all about the future, the past was celebrated as the last year’s event winners were given prizes and monetary rewards.

Glamour, glitz at Lagos Heritage Festival

Culture. Tradition. Glamour. You name it. All were on display. The huge crowd had a swell time watching the cultural displays. The groups came from various parts of Lagos State. They gathered to mark the fourth edition of the Heritage eritage Week.

Cultural activities were held in different parts of the state, climaxing with a Boat Regatta and colourful carnival at the Tafawa Balewa Square(TBS) last Monday.

By 8am, different groups in beautiful costumes paraded routes on Lagos Island, Victoria Island and Ikoyi dancing to beats from a live mobile band.

The groups include Campos, Lafiaji, Epetedo, Oko Faji, Olowogbowo, Locomotion, Obalende, Isale-Eko, Woro Group, Mushin, Ikeja, Ebute Metta, Alagomeji, Sango-Ago Egba, Araromi Fanty, Odi-Olowo, Sports City, Surulere, Kilo, Ilasamaja, Agege and Epe. They were made up of youths.

Pupils from some public schools also participated in the children category, thrilling the large spectators to various dance steps.

A large music band strategically located at the centre of the stage, provided the background music as the carnival contingents’ paraded and danced round the square before a team of selected judges and fun seekers that rated their performance.

Governor Fashola in his short remark said the annual carnival is getting bigger and better, adding that a collaborative effort of the private sector is needed to keep it running.

Fashola said the event has significant economic impact on the lives of the citizens as all the costumes used were locally produced by the students of the state skill acquisition centre.

The governor said hotels are filled up and businesses recording higher sales, stressing that the tradition of the carnival means a lot to residents.

He said the state has achieved a global calendar that now makes it the choice destination for tourists during Easter.

“Our hotels are full and our streets are busy and happy. I can say we have proceeded from a very clear vision, the mission is on course, the dream is in the making and Lagos is prospering,” he said.

He thanked the leaders of the various groups for agreeing to have one carnival, adding that ‘four years ago when the Lagos Carnival was about to start, there were so many small groups, but the government decided to have one big carnival on a unique date at a unique time in a unique place.’

“It is the sustenance of a tradition that dates back over 100 years. It is a handing over, a torch passing moment of a strong cultural heritage of our grand and great grand parents to us and now to you. I hope that one day, one of you here will also pass on the torch”, he said.

Fashola said the carnival is also helping to re-connect bridges. “This carnival also helps us to connect our brothers and sisters in some of their roots in South America and especially Brazil where there have been a large Brazilian participation in this year’s carnival”, he explained.

He hinted that the state wants to have a blast of a carnival with very strong Brazilian content later on next year preparatory to the World Cup in Brazil and the Olympics in 2016.

According to him, the Lagos carnival has helped to spread the roots of Lagos across Africa as some tourists from Zimbabwe are also attending the 2013 carnival first to understudy what is being done in Lagos as the strongest carnival on the African continent and also demonstrate the African spirit by donating a gift and a prize to the Lagos carnival Beauty Queen which includes an all expense paid trip to Zimbabwe.

He also said there is a strong economy that is in the making as all the costumes used at the carnival were made in Lagos by young men and women, boys and girls, adding that it is a wholly home grown local economy that can get bigger.

Mrs Aduke Gomez, the chairman of the junior carnival, described the event as a fantastic opportunity for the youths to get involved in the social economic development of the state.

“We have schools from all over the six divisions of the state. We have over 30 schools as far as Epe and Badagry. We believe they are all here to share in the heritage of Lagos State.

Carnival is not new in the country, because we have being doing it since 1860 and it is an opportunity to share our heritage with Lagosians and the world.

On the economic impacts, she said: “I think you can see the great economic opportunities around the carnival venue. All the costumes were made here in the Lagos State school acquisition centres. I think this year is more fantastic compared to that of last year.

“The costumes I am wearing symbolises such a joyful exposition of colours,” she added.

Prominent among those, who witnessed the colourful displays were the Deputy Governor, Hon (Mrs) Adejoke Orelope- Adefulire, former Governor, Aremo Olusegun Osoba of Ogun State, members of the State Executive Council, Senator Babafemi Ojudu and several tourists from within and outside the country, including a delegation from Zimbabwe among other countries.
