Lions Club offers free eye screening, glasses to pupils

Teachers and pupils of Iganmode Junior Grammar School and Ijako Local Primary School in Ogun State were in a joyous mood penultimate weekend when they received free eye screening and glasses from the Region 6 of District 404-B1, Nigeria, International Association of Lions Club.

The club’s medical team screened the pupils for vision problems and ensured that they got help. Pupils with critical eye problems were referred to optometrists.

The gesture was part of the activities to celebrate the 2016/2017 District Governor Alhaji  Waheed Kadiri’s visit to Region 6.

Besides, the club donated a two-unit modern toilet facility to St James Primary School in Ota, a 3.5KVA generating set to General Hospital in Ota, planted trees at Ota Local Government and distributed books and writing materials to school pupils of Ado/Odo-Ota and Ifo local governments and as well as inaugurated the newly renovated Gateway Bus-Stop.

Kadiri said the most common conditions among the pupils were eye allergies, refractive errors and glaucoma.

He said the screening was aimed at helping the pupils detect their eye problems early to prevent blindness, restore eyesight and improve their eye health. He noted that eye caring for many people was part of Lions’ humanitarian services.

He said school-age children might have an eye problem, and  if untreated, could result in blindness, adding that such problems could be fixed, if they are detected early.

He said the club had made available medication and spectacles that pupils whose conditions required spectacles and those with critical conditions had been referred to optometric hospitals.

Kadiri urged the public to take good care of their sight, saying eyes are the window to the body.

Alhaja Fatima Kadiri said the screening would enable the doctors to detect any optical challenges among pupils, adding that if such problems were detected early, they would be easily treated.

She said the majority of the pupils with eye problems did not have time to discuss it with their parents before it became worst, saying some parents might have no financial muscle to treat it even if the children told them.

Alhaja Kadiri said Lions Club International mandated the screening as one of its agenda of for the year.

She appealed to parents to study their wards to detect the ailment and treat it before it escalated.

2000 eye patients get glasses in Aba

There is visual relief for over 2,000 optometric patients in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State, as two non-governmental organisations, Emeka Nnamani Foundation (ENF) and Universal Mission USA provided them with reading glasses and also treated them of various eye diseases. The event lasted three days.

Flagging off the outreach in Aba, Hon Emeka Nnamani explained why he organised the programme in partnership with Universal Mission USA.

He said, “We gave away over 2000 reading glasses; we are working in partnership with an American-based organisation called Universal Mission USA and we are hoping by the end of the exercise, we would have been able to reach out to as many people as possible who have problems with their eyes.”

Apart from giving free eye treatment and reading glasses, the boss of ENF hinted that his organisation would soon start up an anti-cancer campaign which is to enlighten people on symptoms, effects and causes of cancer. He equally informed that by the end of the year, his foundation will donation a dialysis machine to the state hospital in Aba.

Declining to state the cost of the free programme, he, however, admitted it ran into millions of Naira.

Coordinator of Universal Mission, USA, a charity organization, Nne Ihuoma Ngumoha said her outfit decided to partner Emeka Nnamani Foundation due to the similarity in vision of the two non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

“This young man has been touching lives in Aba as I heard and he invited us all the way from US to come and help to alleviate some of the sufferings of people which include those who have eye problems. If you don’t have your sight, you become debilitated, you won’t live a normal life and you become unproductive. When he invited us and I saw the need for it, we accepted and that’s why we are here to help restore sight as much as we can.”

According to Ngumoha who is a public health consultant, “The correlation between both foundations is that we have the same vision; they say like terms attract. We work with people anywhere in the world, even we’ve been to Ghana, we’ve been to other countries where they have the same vision with us which is helping people to better our community, to reach out to the needy, to reach the underserved in any way we can, both eye check, we organize sickness awareness. Right now we have an upcoming awareness on prostate cancer which has been known to cause over 70 percent of middle age men’s death. So, we want to take care of anything we can, after that we might go into sickle cell treatment.”

  • How to look chic in glasses

How to look chic in glasses

Wearing glasses might not always have been the easiest way to look cool, which is why many people choose to wear contact lenses. With time, busy schedules means comfort is more important so we find ourselves reaching for our frames more often. Here, some helpful tips on looking chic in your frames.

    Wear small earrings

Anything you wear on your lobes- long, dangly or statement-making will compete with your frames and overwhelm your face. Instead, stick to smaller pieces that will add a hint of polish to your look without being too distracting. Your glasses should be seen as a purposeful accessory, not an afterthought. And sparkly little studs will help bring it all together, delicately.

Match your jewelry metal to the colour of your frame

Even though mixing and matching is okay when it comes to fashion, but when it comes to glasses, mind your color coordination. For example, if you have brown or tortoise frames, keep with gold jewelry. If you have silver, clear or cool-toned glasses, stick to silver or stones. But! If you have black specs, anything goes.

    Play down other accessories

Any accessories worn on the head already cover a large part of your face, which can look a little too busy. If you must wear hats, don smaller-brimmed hats that sit away from your face. Also wear smaller and sleeker hair accessories to keep hair out of the way. This is true for both eyeglasses and sunglasses.

    DRESS IT UP

There is nothing wrong with dressing comfortably, but wearing them with glasses tends to give a schoolgirl vibe to your look. For an adult and professional look, ensure that at least one element of your outfit is on the dressier side, like a fitted jacket or a pair of pointed flats for a polished look.

DUMP THE BLACK EYELINER AND HEAVY SHADOWS

Try rocking a navy liner and light shadow instead. Black wings tend to look a bit harsh when magnified by your glasses. But a deep blue will define your eyes just the same, while brightening up the whites. Pair with a sweep of rose-gold eye shadow on your lids and you’re good to go.

    STRATEGICALLY CONCEAL

Focus on areas that are in closest proximity to your frames, under your eyes, on your cheeks and around the nose. If you use a cream concealer, get a liquid formula instead. Creams are more likely to crease and migrate to the nose pads of your glasses.

APPLY MASCARA AT THE ROOTS ONLY

Don’t wear as much on the tips of your lashes. Apply your first coat as you normally would. Then, for your second coat, wiggle the wand at the base of your lashes and pull out, but not up through the lashes. This way you get more pigment at the roots, thus framing your eyes. You’ll also be less likely to have your lashes poke the insides of your frames all day.

    GO BOLD WITH LIPS

Whatever your preference, red, pink, coral, pile it on liberally. A pop of bright color on the lips helps to balance out a heavy frame, and keeps the overall look from feeling “lazy.” Even if you’re not much of a lipstick wearer, a simple nude gloss will do.

Long before the arrival of the CMEF crew led by  the founder and coordinator, Princess Ngozi Oluwagbemiga, the villagers – men and women, children and adults alike, among them, a 106- year- old, Madam Comfort Peter, already gathered under canopies waiting patiently for the team. At the end of the day, their patience was worth the while as they went home fulfilled.

In a chat with The Nation, Madam Peter, expressed gratitude to CMEF for the gesture, describing it as uncommon in the history of the village. She noted that she had, had a running battle with her sight and thought that her plight was beyond redemption. “I never thought that I could see with my eyes again because my sight was as good gone. Fortunately, for me, they came and allayed the fears that crippled me all along. They gave me a pair of glasses and some medication to help my health condition. I am very grateful.”

Following in her footsteps, the traditional ruler of the community, Chief Jimoh Odofin, 60, expressed happiness over the exercise. Odofin, a building contractor, who benefitted from a free medical treatment and eye glass given after an eye test by the medical team, said, signs that he needed an eye glass appeared when suddenly,it became difficult for him to read. “We do not have a health centre in Igbaga. Most villagers travel several kilometers to the city to seek medical assistance and it is always difficult when we have emergencies.

“This is why we are grateful to the organizers of this medical intervention for their assistance. They have met us at the point of our needs,” he stated.

“We attended to a total of 215 people; 115 in the morning session and 100 in the evening,” said Mrs. Helen Adamu, a matron and  member of the medical team.

Speaking,  Princess Oluwagbemiga revealed that, beyond free medical services, CMEF has also trained auxiliary nurses, members of the police, bankrolled several surgeries for the needy, and also gave out mobility aids for the physically challenged in the society.

“It is what I love doing. We have plans to run a mobile clinic in order to avail everyone of our services,” she said.

The Adamo event climaxed on Sunday March 15, 2015, with a thanksgiving/lecture at Famous Gospel Proclaimers’ Church, (FGPC) Ojodu, Lagos. In his lecture entitled: The Impact of Empowerment Strategies for greater economic development, Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, Online Editor,  of this newspaper, said there was need for wealthy men in the society and government to factor-in the poor in their plans and policy thrust, as according to him, true development begins with a happy people. “It is high time the wealthy and by extension, government understood that the happy life does not consist of how much an individual or government has, but how well the people live.

That is the totality of well-doing,” he said, stressing that it is only when the people are happy that the government and the wealthy will truly enjoy their privileged positions. “Therefore,” he continued, “the people should be first in all things. This is why groups that aim at making life better for people like CMEF should be encouraged.”

Also speaking, Rev. Dr Bukola Oluwagbemiga, the General Overseer of FGPC and husband to Princess, described CMEF as God’s own project. “CMEF has been a road map to liberating the poor and less-privileged in Nigeria and Africa from the shackles of poverty through skills acquisition, counseling and general empowerment,” he said. He noted that with the increasing number of the poor and less-privileged in the world following incidences of war and famine, duty calls on everyone to stand up and be counted for good works. “CMEF is a product of passion and love for humanity and I urge everyone to play a part, even as I commend those already running with the dream,” Bukola stated.

Mrs. Helen Oghuma, a board member and partner of CMEF, said she identified with the group after she was convinced that the group sincerely wanted to positively touch people’s lives. “I could not but share in the vision after I saw that those behind it had genuine feelings for the needy.”
