Glo Foundation provides relief to Delta communities

Thousands of women across Warri and neighboring communities in Delta State have received food packs from Glo Foundation under its “Giving Back Together” initiative.

The outreach formed part of Globacom’s ongoing intervention programme aimed at easing economic hardship by supporting the most vulnerable segment of the society with essential food and other household items.

Saturday’s food distribution attracted women of all ages, including widows, from Warri North, Warri South, Aladja, Ughelli South, Udu, and Uvwie local government areas. They assembled shortly after the state’s monthly environmental sanitation in order to benefit from the scheme.

Globacom’s Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Mrs Jumobi Mofe-Damijo, noted that Delta was the latest stop for the initiative after similar exercises in other states. She explained that the food drive was designed to reach the female population, who often bear the heaviest burden in difficult times.

“Our Food Drive is not just for anyone. It is targeted at the most vulnerable segment of the Nigerian society, that is women and children. When we help them, we are helping the society at large,” she said.

Each package contained 5kg of rice, 5kg of gaari, semovita, spaghetti, vegetable oil, tomato paste, sardines, seasoning cubes, noodles, and other essentials.

The gesture sparked scenes of joy, with beneficiaries breaking into songs and dances. Princess Omo-Udoyo of Ughelli North said, “I have not seen this before. I thank God and Glo Foundation for this gift.”

For Mrs Esther Okoro from Otu Jeremi, Ughelli South, gratitude came in form of prayers. “God will lift the company and people who have done this. He will lift them higher and higher. They will never lack anything. For doing this for us today, I say may God protect them. You will always go higher.”

The initiative will extend to more cities across the country in the coming months, with thousands of women expected to benefit.

Glo Foundation partners Lagos Foodbank to feed vulnerable communities

Ikota community, the downtown district of Lekki in Lagos was a beehive of activities yesterday as Glo Foundation in collaboration with the Lagos Foodbank Initiative presented food packages to thousands of people, especially vulnerable groups including the aged women, nursing mothers and widows across the board.

The charity giving initiative according to Mrs Jumobi Mofe-Damijo, Head CSR, Globacom, was the telecom giant’s way of helping the vulnerable communities to mitigate the hardship imposed by the rising cost of living, especially exacerbating cost of food.

“This is our own modest way of helping the vulnerable communities to weather the storm. So our target is to reach out to the underserved communities living in the slum areas. We want to go deep into the communities so that it doesn’t look like we’re just tending to people on the road. We want to reach the underprivileged, and we want to make a difference in their households. We want to make a difference in their lives,” she stressed.

Speaking earlier, Mr Ufuoma Dogun, Senior Manager Glo Foundation, said the mandate of the Glo Foundation is a response to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which is ending poverty and zero hunger.

Justifying the need for the initiative, Dogun said, “We came up with this food drive initiative and we decided to collaborate with the Lagos Food Bank as a partner that has done this for a long time and has a record of excellence.”

According to him, the whole idea is to reach out to as many vulnerable groups as possible. “Last week, we were in Bariga, where we attended to thousands of people. It’s the same thing we’re doing today.  We’re attending to thousands of women, mostly widows, people that are underserved. That’s basically what we’re trying to do, to reach as many people as possible. But we’re going to take it outside Lagos. “At the end of the day, our plan is to reach out to millions of people across the country. This quarter will focus on Lagos. We’re going to work with the food bank team to come up with a list of other places where we can go.

“For now, we’ve identified Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kaduna, Kano, and a few other places. But we do not want to go to state capitals. We want to go to places that are outside. So even if we’re going to Abuja, it won’t be Maitama, Asoko, it will be places like Mpape, mostly suburban communities.”

While acknowledging that the interventions are mere acts of tokenism, Dogun hinted of plans by the Glo Foundation to commit funds running into billions on the CSR initiative.

“We hope to provide the identified vulnerable groups with sustainable means of income ultimately. For example, one of the discussions we’re having with the Lagos Foodbank is backward integration. Because it is one thing to say you want to be giving food to people and people are making donations.

“We have plans to assist such individuals to own their own farms, for example? But in terms of other activities that we’re doing, we’re going to go into schools to remodel schools. We’re going to work on maternal mortality, things like that. We’re also going to look at how we can partner with people in underserved areas across the country, not just healthcare, but in terms of empowerment, in terms of education, we’re going to approach all those touch points.”

Echoing similar sentiments, the Executive Director of the Lagos Foodbank Initiative, Mr Michael Sunbola, said the partnership with Globalcom has ensured interventions to some of the already identified communities.

“Last week we were in Bariga with thousands of people. We had first-hand impact of collaborations like this, how much difference it can make. And here again we are in the Ikota community, in Lekki here. We’ve combined about four communities together and I must say that the impact is really going to be felt for these families.”

A cross-section of some of the beneficiaries, who spoke with The Nation including Mrs. Patricia Junaid, Mrs. Henrietta Khadir, Mrs Eunice Ozegbe, and Mr. Omotayo Jonathan, were effusive with praises for the good gestures by Globalcom.
