  • Gloomy but hopeful @ 57

SIR: It is another birthday for Nigeria. The ambiance of birthday celebrations are always obvious: boisterous galas, fireworks, parties, display of national colors and flags. For us here, these would be absent and for very evident reasons. At 56, we were forced to a low key celebration thanks to the recession. Now, just few weeks after our exit from recession, we are stuck in between the fight for a united Nigeria and the political unrest that has brewed from it. We are contending with a self-inflicted wound of repeating our very old mistakes. Remaining unfaithful to the truth and moral laxity on the part of government, overdependence on raw political power which fans the embers of ethnic divisions and sectarian reservations, and a complete neglect of nation building and national unity which are requisite requirements for development. The recent IPOB upsurge, whether justified or not, are products of this failed system. There is no point rehashing and recanting the foibles we have seen in this past 57 years. History we know is strict and cruel, it repeats itself to the detriment of those who refuse to change their ways. The celebration is a remembrance of history no doubt, but we must start seeing ourselves as being away from infancy.

We would be acting as humans if we are pushed to the wall by all these harrowing facts and events. The pains we are facing as a country are real, and in retrospect are still real. But then there is hope. There is hope because there are several voices now, which perhaps had been silent, that are speaking up for a conscious move to tilt Nigeria towards the dream of her founding fathers. There is hope because our very recent quagmires and unrest is speaking to our collective resolve to enthrone justice and do the right thing. Hopeful because we still have Nigeria, our nation. There can be no 57 without a united Nigeria and no unity without a nation. Hopeful because, we have not lost our bounce, we are still the jolly people we are.

What we have remaining now is our hope. The hope that we can surmount our challenges. The hope that government can deliver on its promises. That citizens would adjust and live peacefully with each other. The hope that the rule of law and social justice would be the spice and ingredient of governance. The hope that the genuine calls for restructuring would be heeded. Hope also that the actors in the python dance debacle would sheath their sword.

Day after attack: Anambra community gloomy

Perpetrators of Sunday’s Church massacre must be brought to justice, many said yesterday. Those who reacted to the attack on worshippers are asking law enforcement agencies to swing into action, report TONY AKOWE, OGOCHUKWU ANIOKE, VICTOR OLUWASEGUN, OSHEYE OKWUOFU AND FRANK IKPEFAN.

IT was still gloomy yesterday in Amakwa-Ozubulu, an Anambra community in Ekwusigo Local Government Area. Residents were recounting the shooting of parishioners at St. Philip’s Catholic Church during Sunday’s early morning Mass by a lone gunman.

The yet-to-be-identified gunman, who emptied his cartridge and reloaded it, escaped in a waiting car as he continued shooting.

The Anambra State Police Commissioner, Garba Baba Urmar confirmed the death of 11 members of the congregation. He said 18 others were injured.

    Survivors recount ordeal

Some of the survivors yesterday recounted the Anambra church shooting. They said the victims were mostly children and the elderly.

Charles Justice, who brought his wounded friends to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital in Nnewi, said the incident happened after the homily at 6am Mass, the Premium Times reported yesterday.

“Those who died are mostly children and the elderly, I know about three children who were below five years that died in the shooting.” said Mr. Justice was quoted as saying.

According to him, three of the victims had died at the hospital, a claim corroborated by a medical doctor who pleaded for anonymity.

Sixteen parishioners among those injured, were reported to be in stable conditions yesterday. Six had successfully undergone surgeries, it was learnt.

The police preliminary investigation confirmed the theory that the gun spray was triggered by a feud between two individuals of the same community who reside overseas.

“One of the individuals built the church where the shooting occurred; it is definitely not a terrorist attack in the mould of Boko Haram of Fulani herdsmen attack,” said Garba Umar, the state’s police commissioner.

On Sunday, the church cordoned off by security operatives, as blood stains and expended bullets littered the premises. Many of the villagers and sympathisers were seen yesterday standing in groups and discussing the incident in hushed tones.

At the Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital in Nnewi, where most of the victims were admitted, people struggled to gain entrance through the heavily guarded gate.

Azuka Ejidike said he lost his father-in-law to the shooting. But Nonso Nwakibe gave thanks to God as his mother, Antonia, lay groaning from the pains of the bullet wounds on her arm.

Ogochukwu Maduka, a Lay Reader at the church, said she had arrived for the Mass and found the church in darkness.

She said: “After much effort to get the generator to work failed, they had resort to using candles and rechargeable lamps”

Ms. Maduka, who said she sat on the front roll during the Mass, said: “The holy Mass had proceeded as usual, after the first, second and gospel reading, and then the priest’s homily, as we stood up for the proclamation of faith, there was a sound of gun like thunder from behind.

“There was chaos and panic and confusion. The priest ran away as the gunshots continued and I took cover under the seat.

“When people started running around, the man began shooting upwards. Those mostly affected were those at the back of the church.”

Ms. Maduka claimed she counted about 15 corpses afterwards but the police confirmed 11.

Nnagolum Oramidike, a primary three pupil, who was shot in the leg, said: “I bent down” while the shooting was going on.”

His mother, Chioma, who also sustained bullet wounds, said she was worried the news would devastate her husband, who had just travelled abroad to seek greener pastures, but hoped he would find out they were alive.

“The shooting started around 7am and my father in law was not so lucky,” said Mrs. Oramidike, 32, whose daughter was hit by a motorcycle amidst the chaos.

“I don’t know how to take care of my children now I’m incapacitated”, she added.

Ifeoma Onyeka sat beside her 14-year-old daughter who had just been operated upon. Her older, foster daughter, Anwurika Mboje, did not survive the incident – she had died right inside the church.

“I survived by taking shelter under the seat while the children must have started running because of lack of knowledge of what to do in such a circumstance”, she said.

    Fed Govt sends more doctors

The Federal Ministry of Health has placed medical experts on standby to beef up services at the Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, for worshippers injured in the Ozubulu church attack, should the need arise.

Media and Public Relations Director in the ministry Mrs. Boade Akinola confirmed yesterday that the Health Minister, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has approved the arrangement.

The minister, who described the incident as shocking, assured the referral hospital’s Chief Medical Director (CMD) of immediate federal support upon request.

He commended the doctors at the hospital for being proactive in their response to the emergency.

Prof Adewole commiserated with the government and people of Anambra on the unfortunate incident.

Governor Willie Obiano has promised to unmask the masterminds and bring them to justice.

    NHRC, ANN condemn killing

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC Acting Executive Secretary, Mrs Oti Ovrawah, condemned the killing of worshippers by the gunman.

In a statement signed in Abuja yesterday by the NHRC’s Media Relations’ Head, Fatimah Mohammad, Mrs. Ovrawah described the killing as unacceptable, adding that there was no justification for it.

She noted that the sanctity of life of every one living in Nigeria was important, and called on security agencies to step up their intelligence gathering techniques.

Mrs. Ovrawah further urged security agencies to urgently fish out the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

According to her, everyone living in Nigeria has a right to life and should enjoy this right without fear and intimidation.

She commended state government for its prompt decision to foot the medical expenses of the injured victims, and condoled with the families of the victims.

The Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), a new political group, also condemned in strong terms the killings at the worship place.

It described it as an unimaginable desecration of the house of God and unparalleled disregard for the sanctity of the human life.

The group’s spokesman Leonard Ebute said the group received with shock news of the dawn raid on the church which left many people dead and scores injured.

Saying the attack was unacceptable, ANN’s spokesman said: “We are not interested in the motivation of the killers or the reason behind such heinous crime. We are not unmindful of different stories making the rounds purportedly explaining the reason behind the killings.

“The ANN is not interested in these stories while trusting security agencies to do a thorough job in fishing out the killers and make them tell the whole world the reason behind such dastardly act.

“While we await that, we make haste to tell fellow Nigerians that acts like this do not have a space in the Nigeria the group is envisioning for her weary compatriots.”

The ANN said the trauma caused families of victims and people of Ozoubulu could better be imagined and expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the raid and prayed for a peaceful repose of the souls of the victims.

The statement reads: “ANN feels your pain. We also sympathise with the people of Anambra State over this ugly development and all members of the Catholic community in the town and the state in general. We pray God to console you Himself and help in bringing to justice those behind this crime against humanity.”

Southeast lawmakers’ caucus wants killers arrested

The Southeast Caucus in the House of Representatives described the killing of parishioners as highly unacceptable.

In a signed statement issued in Abuja by Chukwuka Onyema, the Caucus called on security agencies to ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of all those connected to the heinous crime.

Onyema, who is the House’ Deputy Minority Leader, said: “The devilish and unwholesome murder of innocent worshippers in a church, where they went to seek the face of God is highly reprehensible and is a case that must be properly investigated to speedily restore the people’s confidence of their safety.”

He also commiserated with the families of the deceased on behalf of the Caucus, and prayed for quick recovery of the victims.

Onyema said in honour of the dead and to keep their community safe, those who can assist the security agencies with information to solve the crime, should do so.

The Caucus leader extended his heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church, Anambra government and Nigeria over the sad and unfortunate incident.

    ‘It’s an attack on God’

The pro-East Socio-Cultural group, Ohaneze Ndigbo, yesterday condemned the attack by unknown gunmen, describing it as an attack on God.

“Such a dastardly and cantankerous act smells to high heaven. People have lost reason, civility and good conscience. This is a direct attack on God with daft and brazen impunity.”, the organisation noted.

In statement by group’s National Publucity Secretary, Prince Uche Achi-Okpaga, Ohaneze described the attack as unforgivable.

It said: “The devil sold a dummy to them and they bought it hook, line and sinker. This is condemned in all ramifications. If you attack a man you appeal to God for recompense, when you attack God in His sanctuary who will appeal to?” he queried.

Commiserating with the government and people of the state, the group urged the Police not to speculate but to carry out detailed investigation to unmask the real perpetrators.

The statement reads: “Ohaneze joins the league of well-meaning Nigerians to commiserate with the good people of Anambra state and, in particular, the entire bereaved families and pray the Almighty God to give them enough spiritual shock absorbers to bear the irreparable and irreplaceable loss.

“The operatives should not speculate. They should swing into action to unmask the devil incarnates.”

Achi-Okpaga further charged security agencies to redouble their efforts to make the south east zone safer for the people.

“The whole of Southeast is under siege with Police and military blockades here and there. Yet, herdsmen killings and kidnapping and all sorts of vices have become the order of the day. It is unfortunate.”

    Ekiti governor

    calls for probe

Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose commiserated with the Catholic Church of Nigeria, the government and people of Anambra State as well as families of the victims.

He described the killers as wicked and devilish.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, the governor called on the police and other security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation on the killings with a view to bringing the perpetrators to book.

He was quoted as saying: “Killing fellow human beings is devilish, not to talk of killings in the House of God. I condemn the Ozubulu murder in its entirety.”

Calling for value reorientation in the country, Fayose said: “It is time for us as a nation to have another look at our moral values. Where did we get it so wrong that we now kill one another at will?

“Boko Haram killings in the Northeast, Badoo killings in Lagos, Fulani herdsmen killings across the country, ritual killings everywhere, and now, drug war, what’s wrong with us as a people? Why is it that we no longer value human lives?

“Methinks there is urgent need for leaders of this country to take the issue of moral value reorientation of the citizens seriously.”

Fish out perpetrators, NLC, UPP urges government

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the United Progressive Party (UPP) yesterday urged the government to bring to book those behind Sunday’s killing of innocent worshipers.

In a statement in Abuja, NLC President Ayuba Wabba said the assailants must be identified and apprehended He described the incident as shocking, bizarre and reprehensible.

Wabba said: “Places of worship quite often in decent conflicts are sanctuaries. What makes this attack more confounding is the fact that Ozubulu is far removed from any known theatre of conflict at the moment and has had little or no history of violent conflict.

“Whatever may have been the situation,  this attack represents a descent into the pit of hell. It is animalistic, cowardly and shameful and all necessary steps should immediately be taken by security forces to bring the perpetrators to book.

“Our heartfelt condolences go to the families of the victims, the Catholic Church, Governor Willie Obiano and the people of Anambra State. We urge our security agencies to step up security in and around places of worship. We similarly urge worshippers to take the initiative of securing their premises.”

The National Chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Chekwas Okorie, said the party received with shock the news of the killing, describing it as cowardly, detestable and abominable.

He added that the  murder of the Catholic faithful inside the Church while worshipping the Almighty God was outrageous, a sacrilege and sadism of the worst order.

“We also commiserate with the leadership of Saint Philip’s Catholic Church, the Government and people of Anambra State and pray that God Almighty will give them the fortitude to bear the loss of these loved ones. We equally pray for the speedy recovery of those wounded in this senseless attack.

“We urge security agents to fish out the assailants and their sponsors and bring them to book to serve as a deterrent to those who would contemplate this heinous crime against fellow compatriots. This madness must stop.”

  • Hollywood gloomy over Trump’s victory

    Hollywood gloomy over Trump’s victory

•Lady Gaga protests outside Trump Tower
    •Katy Perry speaks ‘revolution’

Wearing a gloomy face, controversial American singer, Lady Gaga, staged a protest outside Trump Tower in New York City after Republican Candidate; Donald Trump was announced winner of Tuesday elections in the U.S. Gaga, like several of her colleagues had thrown their weights behind Hillary Clinton’s candidacy. Thus, Gaga’s disposition represented the feeling of most celebrities.

She bore a banner reading “love trumps hate”.

The last few months have been quite dramatic in the hope to get out the vote for Hillary Clinton, as Hollywood celebrities went all the hog to show support for the Democratic Party candidate who eventually lost to Trump, the radical, undiplomatic and obviously feared candidate of the Republican Party.

Never has America witness the kind of aggressive support for a candidate who could have made history as their first female president in a contest that brought her close contender so much hate, over campaign promises that were perceived to be capable of hindering freedom.

The most prominent of the Clinton campaigners was Katy Perry, who went naked on the social media in a kind of sex appeal that is known to suffice as marketing tool.

“Tomorrow, i use my body as click bait to help change the world,” she had said on Twitter and Instagram. She did as promised on Monday.

Katy has been stumping for Hillary since the primaries, trending with hashtags like #ImWithHer ball gown. And just after Trump’s “nasty woman” comment, she was one of the first celebs to order a shirt which she wore while campaigning for Hillary on a college campus.

Katy even used Halloween as an excuse to make headlines for Hillary, undergoing a total transformation, with the help of professional makeup artists and prosthetics, just as she let Clinton use her hit song “Roar” in a final wave of powerful campaign adverts.

Another celeb who showed so much commitment to the Clinton course was Taylor Swift. The singer, who is never known to endorse any celebrity, spotted a shoulderless turtleneck inspired by an exquisite photo of Hillary Clinton, which analysts say was her subtle way of endorsing the Democratic Party candidate without alienating any of her Trump-supporting fans.

Perhaps the most unprecedented support was the one from Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican and former California Governor who, in October made headlines when he publicly announced that he would not vote for Donald Trump.

He said: “For the first time since I became a citizen in 1983, I will not vote for the Republican candidate for president. Like many Americans, I’ve been conflicted this election….But as proud as I am to label myself a Republican, there is one label I hold above all else — American. So I want to take a moment to remind my fellow Republicans that it is not only acceptable to choose your country over your party—it is your duty.”

Chloë Grace Moretz is another celeb who’s been an outspoken supporter of Hillary since the beginning. She doesn’t just talk the talk though—she spent time in Michigan registering people to vote earlier this year.

There is also Kim Kardashian who took to Facebook in September to officially endorse Hillary Clinton, posting a selfie and proclaiming that she was “with her.”

Miley Cyrus also hit up a campus to show her support for Hillary, and she wore a perfectly Miley, totally unforgettable outfit to do it.

Beyoncé on her part had encouraged fans during her Tidal X performance to vote, enjoining fans to save their support for Barack Obama. “I know it seems like things are bad, but if you think that can’t get worse just ask your grandparents. Remember Barack Obama is our President. You made that happen, young people made that happen,” she said to the crowd. “We are not helpless. The fire is still burning. Please go out and vote this November. Too many people have died and sacrificed so much for us to have our voice.” she officially showed her support for Hillary on November 4 at a campaign concert in Cleveland, Ohio.

Now that the table has turned for them, still in shock, they found time for the social media.

Madonna tweeted ‘we never give up’ after Trump was named America’s new president.

Katy Perry tweeted her dismay after Hillary lost the election, saying: “Do not sit still. Do not weep. MOVE. We are not a nation that will let HATE lead us.”

Continuing, she said: “We will never be silenced. #lovetrumpshate,” before adding: “The revolution is coming.”

  • Experts worried over 2016 gloomy outlook

Experts worried over 2016 gloomy outlook

The nation’s economic outlook in 2016 leaves little to cheer about. These were the submissions of experts who spoke at this year’s edition, of the Nigerian Economic Outlook, organised by the Networks Business Club of the City of David, Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in partnership with Access Bank Plc.

Lagos State governor, Akinwumi Ambode who delivered the keynote address observed that one of the challenges bedeviling the country was caused in part by the crash in the price of crude oil.

According to Ambode, who was represented by Mr. Akinyemi Ashade, Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, the current economic crisis, is the direct consequence of the fiscal irresponsibility witnessed in the past couple of years and inability to save for the rainy day during the oil price boom.

While giving a bird’s eye view of the economic outlook for 2016, renowned economist, Bismarck Rewane said 2016 is going to be a tough year.

Rewane who is the Managing Director, Financial Derivatives Company Limited said: “If anybody had told me this time last year that oil will drop by $50, I will say no way. But here we are in 2016 and it has dropped to $28. We don’t need an economist to forecast that a country dependent on a single commodity, which is oil, will be worse hit.”

The year 2016, he emphasised, will be flat “but towards the end of the year, things will pick up and the reason it’s going to be that way is because the present administration is doing the right things very slowly. There seems to be no urgency. Everybody is waiting on government for its policy direction; including foreign investors. There is no time to waste because by 2017, politicians will start talking of primaries for 2019 elections.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Mr. Mutiu Sunmonu, former Country Managing Director, Shell Petroleum Development Corporation (SPDC) who observed that things were gloomy for the economy, however, expressed optimism that there are business opportunities within the oil and gas sub-sector for those who can make the sacrifice.

  • Otuoke …Gloomy after Jonathan’s loss of the big pie

Otuoke …Gloomy after Jonathan’s loss of the big pie

What does a town look like when its most prominent indigene loses the highest office in the country? MIKE ODIEGWU was in Otuoke, the home town of outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan, to see its state after the last presidential election won by Gen. Muhammadu Buhari

President Goodluck Jonathan’s Polling Unit 39, Ward 13 in Otuoke, Ogbia Local Government Area, had a reversal of fortune on Saturday during the House of Assembly elections in Bayelsa State. It lacked the presidential atmosphere and aura it once commanded.

Prior to Saturday, Otuoke used to bubble on each election day, especially after Jonathan was elevated to the highest political office in the country. Each election was like a carnival or as some people said a market of dignitaries. Everybody who mattered in the Presidency used to accompany Jonathan to his polling unit in Otuoke.

Then, the broad road of Otuoke felt the impact of exotic vehicles which tickled the earth and quaked the bridges. Residents of Otuoke were treated and entertained by influx of very important persons to their community. They fed their eyes counting movement of many strange and expensive Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) in their community.

Then, the media community used to relocate to Otuoke. All the media houses, especially electronic media, moved their gadgets to the polling unit of the President to cover him, most times live as he exercised his franchise. Foreign media organisations were not left behind. In fact, the number of reporters almost suffocated the polling unit.

What about the number of security operatives? They were simply uncountable. Like bees they swarmed around the unit and Otuoke. They paraded different sophisticated rifles and looked stern. The operatives took over the streets of Otuoke and through their eyes they scanned everything and everybody in the community.

With their presence, it was a Herculean task to catch a glimpse of the President. Different security hardware and softwares used to be deployed in Otuoke. In fact, security commanders of all the security agencies in the state took charge of affairs of the President whenever he visited to cast his votes.

One of the major features of the President’s visit to Otuoke on any Election Day was the presence of his wife, Dame Patience and his mother, Comfort. The President enjoyed the company of his wife whose handling of English Language provoked laughter when on one of the occasions she saw a crew of AIT reporters and exclaimed: “AIT, una wan come carry us alive today?” Indeed, Jonathan never voted in the polling unit without his wife.

But everything changed last Saturday. “How the mighty have fallen”, a resident from Otuoke exclaimed as he trudged along the road unhindered. The unidentified old man shook his head a number of times as he passed. Apparently, it was strange for him to see a few vehicles, relaxed security and absence of “Mama Peace” in Otuoke on that day.

Nobody believed that Jonathan was in town last Saturday. His polling unit where the people of Otuoke came out in their numbers on March 28 during the Presidential election to identify with him, was deserted. Nobody believed that such level of disenchantment existed in Otuoke where voting entered the second day during the presidential election.

There was serious voter apathy at the polling unit of the President. The downcast residents were in their houses and business premises refusing to come out for the election. Dame Patience ‘abandoned’ her husband. Madam Comfort stood by her son.

Jonathan arrived the community at about 10:53am and did his accreditation at about 11:05am with minimal number of aides and security details. The disenchanted people of Otuoke went about their normal business and domestic activities leaving officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) sitting idly.

INEC officials arrived before 8am at the polling units in the area but waited till about 9:20am before some voters grudgingly appeared for accreditation. Some of the residents said there was nothing to vote for since their kinsman lost the presidential election despite their massive support.

“We are no longer motivated to vote. What are we voting for again. We voted massively during the presidential election but our brother still lost,” a lady who was engrossed in her business muttered.

Where was Patience Jonathan? Everybody was curious to know the First Lady’s whereabouts. Why was she not with her husband? Why did she refuse to cast her vote at her polling unit? It became obvious that Patience sacrificed her vote for the soul of Rivers State. She went to her hometown in Okirika to supervise the abnormalities that led to the emergence of Nyesom Wike as the Governor-elect of Rivers State.

But journalists were curious over the absence of Jonathan’s wife. So, a female journalist inquired from the President: “Where is your wife?” The President was a little startled. He let out a smile and gave answer suggesting he was playing to the gallery.

At about 1:45pm, the President said he was still expecting his wife at his community in Otuoke to participate in the electoral process. The President, who spoke after casting his vote at his polling unit, feigned ignorance of his wife’s whereabouts claiming that the First Lady who was nowhere to be found in her voting unit did not board the same aircraft with him.

While Jonathan who jetted out of his community shortly after casting his vote, claimed he was still expecting his wife at Otuoke, there were reports that Patience had spent about two days in Okirika, Rivers State, working to ensure the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the polls.

Jonathan said: “Of course, we used different aircraft. She was expected to be here. We have been expecting her and she will still come. The only thing is whether she will meet up the accreditation period. That is the problem. But she is supposed to be on her way.”

But Jonathan attributed the low turnout of voters to different levels of election, noting that some elections elicit more interest than others. “Naturally different levels of elections elicit different interests. Presidential elections are more interesting. governorship elections are quite interesting,” he said.?

He added that there would have been better turnout if governorship election was holding in Bayelsa State. “For the House of Assembly election, the interest is not as high compared to governorship election. We expect low turnout in states that don’t have governorship elections,” he said.

On his feeling after conceding defeat, the President said: “I am a Nigerian and I am Goodluck Jonathan and I feel that as a nation, you respect your laws and I am quite pleased in respecting the laws of the land.”

The President further expressed satisfaction on the growing democratic ideals of the country. “As a nation, we are quite happy we are consolidating in our democratic efforts. The key thing is that the citizens must directly change government properly. We must do elections every four years,” he said.
