After a successful tenure, members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) have held a thanksgiving. IKECHUKWU OFILI (300-Level Public Administration) and FRANK EJEAGBASI (400-Level Medical Physiology) report.

After a successful  tenure, outgoing members of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) Students’ Union Government (SUG) were at St Paul Catholic Church  last Sunday for a thanksgiving.

They danced and rejoiced to the music of the choir. The union members were led by their president Bassey Ekaani  and Publicity Team leader Augustine Akah.

It was also an opportunity to appreciate God for the feat of the publicity team in Ghana, where members came second in a debate. Augustine led a team of debaters to the Islamic University College in East region of Ghana.

There were seven preliminary stages in the contest. The UNICAL team got to the quarter final with 16 points. More than 205 debaters from 15 higher institutions in seven countries participated in the debate with the topic: Taxation in Africa is a theft.

The teams that reached the final were Kwame Nkrumah University, UNICAL, University of Ghana in Legon and Imo State University (IMSU).

The Kwame Nkrumah University came first with 15 points; UNICAL was second with 12 points. The UICAL also won Best Performing Institution and its team leader, Augustine, emerged the Best Adjudicator and third Best Speaker.

In his homily at the thanksgiving, the Assistant Parish Priest, Reverend Father Francis Offiong, urged the students to always promote the school’s image and be its worthy ambassadors.

He advised them to put God first in anything they do.

Another clergy, Reverend Father Emmanuel Duke, said for one to attain the kingdom of God, one must be prepared to dispose all worldly possessions.

Duke noted that there was nothing wrong in acquiring material wealth, saying it was God’s blessing on earth but “we should make sure we have the kingdom of heaven as well and ensure our quest for materialism does not come between us and the kingdom ”.

The thanksgiving procession was led by Augustine, and Editor of the SUG Information Bureau Stanley Uchegbu.

Speaking on his achievements, Augustine said he introduced and published The Voice of Malabor, the SUG magazine that would be sustained by the incoming executive. The magazine, according to him, is adjudged the best students’ newspaper since in the history of the institution.

“During my tenure, I organised an interactive meeting with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) officials and the students during the last strike to avail students of information about the true position of lecturers,” he said.

“We started with very little resources but our tenacity was the only capital we have to keep the magazine afloat,” Stanley, Editor of the magazine said.

“It got to a point it appeared production was affecting my studies because I devoted my time, running from one office to another to ensure my team interviewed all the principal officers including the Vice-Chancellor, Prof James Epoke.

“But today, we are in church to thank God for making our dream a reality, despite turbulence and production hitches that came along the line; we were able to surmount all odds and achieve success. God deserved to be praised for this,” he added.

Stanley praised everyone who supported the vision of the magazine, especially the university principal officers, who, he said, granted his team an audience despite their busy engagements. He hailed students for their support towards the success of the magazine.

Joseph Ochang, a member of the editorial team, described the magazine as informative, especially for the freshers who have just been absorbed into the system.

“If any fresh student thoroughly glances through the magazine, he would be informed about the activities of the university,” he said.

Michael Jamieson backed to lead Scotland to glory

Michael  Jamieson was backed on Tuesday to lead Team Scotland to glory as senior management set their sights on a day-one gold rush at Glasgow 2014.

Commonwealth Games Scotland chairman Michael Cavanagh fully expects the host nation to have bagged at least one gold medal by the end today’s opening programme.

Home hopes are pinned on Olympic hero Jamieson and former world champion Hannah Miley – both in action at Tollcross Pool – while cycling and judo are among the other sports expected to deliver. Gold standard: Michael Jamieson is a major gold medal contender in the pool

‘Our expectation is that, at the end of the night, Scotland will have gold on the medal board – absolutely,’ said Cavanagh.

‘But it’s sport. Michael Jamieson will do everything he can to win a gold medal, as will Hannah Miley, as will Aileen McGlynn and the other athletes going on that day. They’ll be giving it everything.

‘Form right now and home advantage points to success. Michael is a really strong prospect – but even Ross Murdoch, his own team-mate, is pushing him hard.

‘Michael is always confident, he knows what shape he’s in, he’s talking confidently. Of all the athletes in the team, if you’re looking for someone to step up when the pressure on, Michael is your man.

  • Rising stars bring glory to Epe

Rising stars bring glory to Epe

Just one week after displaying brilliance at the BRF Quiz Competition, Epe Grammar School shone again at the Lagos State Secondary Schools’ debate held at the LTV8 Blue Roof last week.

In the quiz, the school’s representative, Yeko Joseph, proved that he was a genius in mathematics, winning the best individual category in a performance that wooed the audience.  He also helped his school to win the second place trophy in the senior secondary school category of the same competition.

Last week, it was the duo of Zainab Amusa and Kaosarat Olabode who made the school proud, lifting the Schools Debate trophy with 79.63 points.

They narrowly edged out Bukola Orekoya and Victoria Ayenuro of CMS Girls Senior Grammar School, Bariga, whose score was 79.13 proved how difficult it was for the judges to decide the winner.

The two teams argued on the topic: Leadership is not the problem but followership.  They marshalled out their points in a manner that kept the audience at the edges of their seats, arguing for and against various issues of societal importance.

The second speakers of both teams, Kaosarat (for Epe) and Victoria (for CMS) also played commendable roles in their team’s performance, helping their chief speakers bounce back stronger after failing to conclude properly before their time expired during their first appearance.

For winning the debate, Epe Grammar School got a prize of N500,000, a trophy and other gifts.  CMS Girls Grammar School was rewarded with N350,000 and a trophy, while third placed Meiran Community Senior High School represented by the pair of Oluwabukola Ogunmuko and James Oluwatomisin won N200,000.

Reacting to their victory, 13-year old Zainab, an SS1 pupil, gave glory to God.

“We feel privileged.  I thank God for helping us to win.  I did not believe we could win, but l had second thoughts and stayed awake in the midnight to prepare,” she said.

On her part, Bukky though disappointed at the narrow miss, yet said she was grateful her school did well.

“Actually, I cannot say I am happy or sad.  But I want to thank God for this opportunity even though this is not our expectation,” she said.

In the Individual Speakers’ category, Kehinde Adeyemi of Vetland Senior Grammar School, Agege, Lagos came first with 35 points for her excellent presentation on “Oil wealth: A blessing or a curse.”

She was followed in the second position by Jeremiah Lawal of Isheri Senior Grammar School, Isheri and Toheeb Edun of Egan Senior Grammar School, Egan who came third.  They were presented with N75,000, N50,000 and N25,000 respectively.

The Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, who was represented by the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, praised the participants for putting up a good performance.

“My children, you all did very well.  But someone had to win.  I am really impressed by your courage and performance,” she said, urging them  to work harder in their studies.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Otunba Fatai Olukoga, said the event has helped pupils to deliberate on issues that affect society.

“I am grateful that I am part of this success of imbibing in our students the culture of being outspoken and attacking issues.  Most of the topics they spoke on are issues affecting this nation and they spoke well,” he said.

About 276 pupils from public and private schools started the race for the school’s debate trophy in January.

The daughter of former Acting Comptroller General of Customs, Mr Akintayo Ogungbemile, Omolara has wedded Olugbenga, the son of the late Senator Olawole Julius Adewunmi, at the St. Paul’s African Church in Ilupeju, Lagos. AMIDU ARIJE was there.

It all seemed like a session to praise The Most High. The guests were all decked out in colourful dresses, their faces glowing with smiles. The processional hymn, in fact, “To God be the glory”. But, it was not just a praise session; it was a wedding.

The St. Paul’s African Church, Ilupeju, Lagos, was jammed. It was all for Omolara Omosalewa Ogungbemile and Olugbenga Adegboyega Adewunmi.

Omolara is the daughter of former Acting Comptroller General of Customs, Mr Akintayo Ogungbemile.  Olugbenga’s father is the late Senator Olawole Julius Adewunmi.

The bride was ushered into the church with her father, who led her  to the altar where her would-be husband was waiting. The processional hymn was “To God be the glory.”

The service was anchored by the Vicar of the church, Ven Akinremi Oyekunle, who was assisted by some other priests.

The couple was joined as man and wife by the Lord Bishop, Lagos Central Diocese of the African Church, the Rt. Rev Julius Abbe.   He prayed for them to have a blissful marital life.

The Bishop, Enugu Diocese of the African Church, Revd. Deji Sogbamu, in his sermon, urged the couple to hold firm the rope of God, saying it is the key to a successful marriage.

He said: “You must support yourselves at home, both financially, emotionally, psychologically and physically. You must also create time for yourselves and, above all, you must show love to yourselves.”

After the sermon, the signing of the marriage register followed. As this was going on, the church choir gave a rendition.

The women league of the church presented a gift to the couple, praying for a successful marriage.

The recessional hymn “Great is thy faithfulness” was taken as the couple made their exit.

Friends, relatives and associates posed for pictures outside the church with the couple.

The bridal train moved to Landmark Event Centre, Water Corporation, Victoria Island, Lagos, for the reception.

The hall was awesome. The fittings were neatly done; ash and white satin were used for decorations.

Welcoming guests with melodious songs into the hall was the highlife band led by Shuga. The band kept the hall lively as guests relished choice food and drinks.

The ceremony, which was chaired by the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), started on a prayer note.

Chief Olanipekun thanked God and the families for the success of the day.  He said he was delighted to be part of the success story. He enjoined the couple to trust each other, saying it is the only principle for them to live a successful life.

“Marriage is an institution built on trust; you must trust yourselves,” he said.

He urged the husband to tolerate the wife, as it is the decree of God.

Olanipekun urged the couple’s parents to give them a chance to live their life.

Ekiti State Deputy Governor Prof Modupe Adelabu supervised the cutting of the cake. The cake was cut after the spelling of LOVE.

The toast to the couple was made by Sir Rotimi Ajibola, who described the couple as loving and quiet. He prayed to God to bless their union.

The throwing of the bouquet followed with spinsters marching out to catch it. It was fun.

Olugbenga thanked God and described the day as his happiest.

The bride’s father advised the couple to continue their relationship on the foundation of love.

“They should continue with the foundation of their relationship which is love, and they should tolerate each other. They must communicate and appreciate one another,” he said.

Former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Chief Joseph Sanusi, who represented the groom’s father, also advised the couple to make love their pillar.

“They should be close to God for God is the foundation of love. If they do this, they will be happy together,” he said, adding: “They should cultivate the habit of giving gifts to each other.”

After this, Mr Femi Aina gave the closing prayer and everyone took to the dance floor.

Guests on the occasion included renowned essayist Prof Adebayo Williams; former Secretary of Health Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi; former Minister of State for Defence, Mrs Dupe Adelaja and many others.

  • Nigeria’s telecom glory in Barcelona

Last month, from February 25-28, the whole of the global mobile telecommunications community, to wit, operators, techies, equipment manufacturers, enthusiasts, regulators and investors emptied into the historical city of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain. The event was the 2013 edition of the Mobile World Congress (also known as GSMA 2013). It is the Holy Grail of telecommunications as it pertains to mobile market. About 1,700 companies, over 72,000 people from 200 countries attended the event, the highest attendance ever, according to the organisers.

The yearly event is itself a demonstration of the global acceptance of the mobile genre of telecom service. Besides, the congress offered opportunity to both emerging markets and the developed markets to share ideas, compare notes and build synergies towards the enhancement of the global mobile value chain. Nigeria was at the event. The nation’s telecom regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) made a strong showing at the global summit. This is to be expected. In matters of mobile telecom, Nigeria ranks among the global top ten in growth and market size. For five years in a row, Nigeria was the fastest growing mobile market in the world, a record it still shares with no one.

It follows, therefore, that in a global meeting of who is who in mobile telecom, Africa’s largest market should not be a passive participant. Dr. Eugene Juwah, the spunky engineer and head of the nation’s regulatory commission who has manifested a tendency to restore sanity in the sector seized the moment. At a session tagged: The Broader Way 2013 Forum – Make it Possible, organized by China’s communications equipment manufacturer, Huawei, Juwah unveiled the limitless milieu of possibilities in the nation’s telecom sector.

He took the cosmopolitan audience made up of equipment manufacturers, service providers, investors and an amalgam of enthusiasts through the contours and crucible of Nigeria’s telecom industry. If there was ever anyone in the crowd who was doubtful about the safety of his investment in Nigeria, that doubt quickly dissolved when Juwah gave a granular detail of the efforts of the Nigerian government to guarantee the safety and sustainability of investments in the country. He also graphically illustrated the growth pathway of the early investors in the nation’s telecom market as well as the outlay of incentives available to those who would be willing to board the next flight to invest in Nigeria. Juwah seized the opportunity to pitch Nigeria’s Broadband potentials. The ovation that greeted his submission spoke volume of the connection he made with the audience. It was also manifest that some key players in the global telecom market had a wrong perception of Nigeria as an investment destination. It was, in a sense, a moment of glory for the country as Juwah won many global converts for the nation’s telecom sector.

No doubt, Nigeria has since the mobile explosion attended many international summits but this year’s mobile world congress was a clincher. Juwah made the most of it by holding strategic meetings with several global brands and organisations, namely the Commonwealth Telecommunication Organisation (CTO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), on how to strengthen existing synergies with Nigeria. He did not pass off the opportunity to meet with Kamar Abass, managing director, Ericsson and other top management of Global Ericsson. One of the positive outcomes of the meetings was the announcement by the Secretary General of the ITU, Dr. Hamadoun Toure, of the consensus of the global community to make Nigeria a Cyber-security regional hub. The implication of this is that Nigeria would have a cyber-security testing centre. Making Nigeria a regional hub has a direct bearing on the massive investment in submarine fibre cable within the country and offshore. It is also a fitting endorsement of the continent-wide leadership of the country in telecom. Toure, a man who has never hidden his admiration of the progress made by the NCC as a flagship regulator within the ITU family, accentuated Juwah’s submission that now is the best time to invest in Africa, especially in Nigeria.

For Nigerians at the congress, it was no surprise that the country ranks so high on the market-performance index of the ITU. At home, there is a growing tendency to vilify the NCC and dismiss the sector as under-achieving but the world sees Nigeria differently. The nation’s telecom regulator is ranked among the best in the world and it has in recent years become the most realistic tool to benchmark the regulatory authorities in other emerging markets. Juwah sees these attributes translating to good times for the nation in the coming years. He projects that by 2015 the contribution of the ICT sector to the GDP would have shot up from the present 5.6 percent to between 13 and 15 percent. This is not an overstatement. It is a realistic forecast given the strategic interventions of the NCC and the bouquet of incentives which the Nigerian government has outlined for investors.

This year’s mobile congress in Barcelona simply served notice to the world that Africa is rising and can no longer be ignored. More gratifying is the global perception that Nigeria ideally defines the African market. Selling Africa, nay Nigeria, to the world is usually a tough job especially in the face of the stereotype that Africa is nothing but a spot on the global map where the most ludicrous and the downright ridiculous coexist; where famine, hunger, crime and corruption stomp the streets and marketplace. Such sordid profiling is worse for Nigeria but telecom has come to add a veneer of gloss to the nation’s grubby image.

Back home, Juwah has promised to move service delivery in the sector to the next level with the expansion of broadband service and the introduction of mobile number portability. He has rallied the private sector to invest more in infrastructure and network expansion even as he has sharpened the regulatory instincts of the NCC. A mix of this and the enthusiasm he stirred among the global players in Barcelona would precipitate yet another telecom revolution in the country; this time, in data penetration and access. The auguries point to a bright and beautiful telecom future.
