•Senate President decries high turnover of NDDC management team

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said the people of Niger Delta have decided to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to continue in office beyond 2027 because of the projects his administration has brought to the region.

He spoke at the weekend at the grand finale of the 25th anniversary of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as part of activities to round off the week-long celebration.

The event was attended by former President Goodluck Jonathan, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Sen. George Akume, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Rivers State Administrator Admiral Ibokette Ibas, lawmakers, monarchs, ministers and personalities from across Niger Delta.

A statement by the Special Assistant to Senate President on Media/Communication, Anietie Ekong, quoted Senator Akpabio as saying: “In the past, Niger Delta was used as the goose that produced the golden egg with nothing to show for it.

“Today President Tinubu has set up an environmental sciences university in Ogoni land to take care of the environment, which has been degraded as a result of oil pollution.

“He has also set up a maritime university, signed it into an Act of Parliament at Okerenkoko in Delta State. He has given us several tertiary institutions in agriculture, technology and lots of others. So, it is not only in terms of appointments, but various projects.

“This is the region that produces the wealth of the nation. We have the right to choose who manages our resources.  So, people should not think that anybody can just come and become the President without consultation with the people of Niger Delta.

“We the people of Niger Delta have assessed President Tinubu and have found him fit to continue in office beyond 2027. So let the people who are conspiring against President Tinubu hear this. They did it before and conspired to remove our son, President Goodluck Jonathan.

“This time, the entire Niger Delta has decided to speak with one voice. And we are telling the President ‘on your mandate we stand.’ No conspiracy formed against this government that has recognised Niger Delta shall prosper.”

Akpabio decried the high turnover of management team of the NDDC, which he said had slowed the pace of development of the oil-rich region.

He hailed the current team led by the Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, for adhering to the vision of the founding fathers of the interventionist agency by embarking on projects that had impacted positively on the lives of the people of the region.

Akpabio said the frequent management change created endless cycles where new leaders were removed before finishing projects, leaving thousands of initiatives abandoned and wasting billions meant for development.

“There were many reasons we have had so much problems in NDDC. Part of it was leadership tussle. In Niger Delta, we have what we call ‘periwinkle politics.’ This is politics where everybody bears the same head. Nobody wants to wait for his turn. Everybody feels he should be there and not the other person.

“So there was always this conspiratorial situation. Each management in the NDDC will conspire against themselves and of course the workers will assist them to quarrel and shortly after they will sack the management. And one of them will become the acting managing director,” he said.

The Senate President recounted how the commission for over 20 years could not complete its headquarters building until he became the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and gave a marching order to the commission to complete the long abandoned project.

  • National Assembly will resolve Rivers political crisis – Akpabio

National Assembly will resolve Rivers political crisis – Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured that the National Assembly is committed to resolving the lingering political crisis in Rivers State, three months into the six-month state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu.

Akpabio gave the assurance in Abuja while representing the President at the commissioning of the Kugbo Taxi and Bus Terminal.

He said the National Assembly would play a key role in restoring political stability and peace in the state, emphasizing that sustained efforts are underway to address the root causes of the crisis and foster reconciliation among stakeholders.

“We are determined to ensure that normalcy returns to Rivers State. The National Assembly will work closely with all parties involved to ensure lasting peace and progress for the people,” Akpabio said.

Federal Capital Territory FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike also tackled former Presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi over the latter’s claim of leading a spartan lifestyle and not given to luxury like his contemporaries.

Wike recalled the glorious days of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and how he had joined a delegation to Anambra State where their host served them Cristal Brut, some form of expensive champagne.

Obi had in 2017 shortly after leaving the Anambra Government House claimed he had only one wristwatch which he had worn for 17 years.

Speaking at The Platform, a programme organised by the Covenant Christian Centre in Lagos, Obi said he also had two pairs of black shoes which he always travels with.

“I have said it to Nigerians, Peter Obi wears only black shoes, and I have two pairs of them, and I travel with them,” Obi had said, referring to his austere lifestyle.

However, Wike urged politicians to practice what they preach.

He said: “I will tell you something. When PDP had no problem, we went to Anambra state for a gubernatorial campaign and when we finished that campaign, we went to somebody’s house. I just sat down. Come and see the best of drinks, this and that. So, I called him, I said you are providing crystal champagne here but every day, you tell people that you wear only one shoe, you carry your own bag, only you. But look at champagne here. Not just champagne, crystal.

“Why do we deceive Nigerians? Why can’t we tell ourselves the simple truth? What you preach is not what you practice. And you know, we like to hear such things but that is being deceitful.

“And these are the kind of things that I tell Nigerians, look, don’t allow people to deceive you. People who are preaching that they care for you, they don’t care for you, they don’t think about you. They only try to use you to climb.

“We must learn. We must see those who are sincere, who are faithful, who say, we will do this and we will do it. Yes, there could be some challenges. There could be some challenges. And that’s a sense of leadership. Nobody, no leader, can succeed without taking the decision. We have challenges. No leader can succeed without taking the decision that people will say something.

“People must say something. Because if you don’t take that decision, people will say something. If you take the decision, people will say something. Therefore, say something. And that’s all about what we are doing in our city.

That’s what will move this country forward. And that’s what the president has shown. We continue to support Mr. President.

“I thank him for giving us the opportunity to be part of this success story. To be part of this success story. You know, you can be a part of an administration that’s not successful. I’m happy. I’m part of an administration that’s successful. I’m very, very happy. Whether you like it, you don’t like it, the truth must be told. If you say, if you know how the President is working, come to Abuja. Take it from there. You know that the president is doing very, very well. So, I’m not here talking because of a party or no party”.

Akpabio said by assenting to the Bills, Tinubu “demonstrated commitment to the development of the Southeast and efforts to heal the deep-seated wounds of the past.”

He said the establishment of the institutions would go a “long way to remove the nagging feelings of distrust and socio-economic marginalisation among the people of the Southeast.”

He also praised the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives,  Benjamin Kalu, who sponsored two of the Bills and other stakeholders in the Senate including the Deputy Whip, Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu and main sponsor of one of the bills, Senator Patrick Ndubueze, for their exceptional leadership, effective representation and their commitment to the wellbeing of their people.

Akpabio assured that the continued support of the South-East for the Tinubu administration will attract more dividends of democracy to the region.

Akpabio hailed for strategic leadership, fostering national unity

President of the 10th Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has been lauded  for strategic, inclusive, and results-driven leadership since assumption of office in marking two years si on June 13, 2023.

The Special Assistant, Media to the President of the Senate, Jackson Udom, in a commemorative reflection titled “Akpabio: Diary of a Legislative Czar in the Red Chamber,” lauded Akpabio’s commitment to national consensus building for the development of the country.

Udom chronicled the achievements of the Senate President over the last 730 days, highlighting his role in stabilizing the Red Chamber, strengthening the legislative institution, and contributing to key national reforms.

“Senator Akpabio has demonstrated exceptional leadership, navigating complex legislative terrain with finesse and clarity of vision. His ability to balance competing interests, unite political factions, and drive forward the agenda of national development is a testament to his strategic insight,” Udom said.

He noted that from the outset, Akpabio’s emergence was not without challenges as he faced resistance from within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and skepticism from the opposition.

However, he said, backed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC leadership, Akpabio built the consensus needed to clinch the Senate presidency and immediately swung into action to reconcile various camps.

He pointed out that one of the most contentious issues facing new Senate leaderships, the sharing of committee positions, was deftly handled.

Udom noted that Akpabio oversaw an inclusive process that ensured equitable distribution of chairmanships and deputy roles across party lines, preempting the friction that had undermined previous sessions.

“With deliberate strategy and tact, he ensured that no senator or bloc felt left out. That spirit of inclusion has engendered stability and unity in the Red Chamber,” Udom noted.

He said under Akpabio’s leadership, the Senate has passed several impactful legislations, including the 2025 Appropriation Act. He also played a key role in rallying legislative support for the removal of fuel subsidies, a policy long considered necessary but politically risky.

Udom described Akpabio’s role in the subsidy removal as a reflection of his courage and clarity in governance

“Rather than shy away from the policy, he stood with the executive, articulating the economic rationale and bringing the Senate along in support,” he said.

He added that beyond that, Akpabio’s Senate has prioritized laws and policies that promote economic growth, infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and national security.

Akpabio emphasizes importance of women’s representation in governance

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has emphasized the importance of women’s representation and their crucial role in the development of the nation.

He said a lack of female participation in politics is a missed opportunity for progress.

The Senate President also acknowledged the crucial role women play in leadership and governance, describing them as “better managers” and strong decision-makers.

Akpabio made the remarks during an advocacy visit to his office by a group of women activists under the aegis of “Reserved Seats for Women Bill” led by Osasu Igbinedion.

He lamented the challenges women face in political spaces, pointing out that women themselves often do not vote for female candidates, a barrier that needs to be addressed for greater female participation in political representation.

“We all came from women. Personally I am blessed with four beautiful daughters. The success of this bill will open the doors of greater political participation for our female children,” he said, while advising the advocates to do more to win more converts for the bill to scale through.

In her speech, Mrs Igbinedion said, “We are here today to speak on behalf of millions of Nigerian women,  farmers, entrepreneurs, market traders, doctors, teachers, and mothers, whose voices have for too long been underrepresented in the highest chambers of our democracy.

“The Reserved Seats for Women Bill offers us a rare opportunity to correct that historic imbalance to finally give women a seat at the table where national decisions are made.

“Nigeria currently ranks among the lowest in Africa for women’s representation in parliament, with women occupying less than 5% of seats in the National Assembly. This is not just a gender issue, it is a governance issue, a democracy issue, and a development issue.

“The evidence is clear: when women are involved in policymaking, we see stronger communities, more inclusive legislation, and better outcomes in health, education, and peace-building. Representation matters — not just symbolically, but substantively.

“This bill is not asking for charity; it is calling for justice. It is not about reducing the space for men; it is about expanding the possibilities for Nigeria. By creating reserved seats for women, we are not limiting merit, we are correcting systemic exclusion.

“Mr. President, your endorsement of this bill will be a turning point. It will send a powerful message across Nigeria, that this Senate is ready to lead with integrity, to legislate with empathy, and to act with boldness in pursuit of equality,” she said.

The Senate President and other Senators present were decorated with the “I support reserved seats for women bill” badge.

  • Alleged defamation: Natasha petitions IGP over ‘Prof Mgbeke’, Akpabio

Alleged defamation: Natasha petitions IGP over ‘Prof Mgbeke’, Akpabio

Suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Ms Sandra Duru alias Professor Mgbeke of alleged defamation.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is on a six-month suspension from the Senate, in a letter of petition addressed to the Inspector General of Police, claimed that Duru who recently revealed some damming conversations they allegedly had has conspired with Akpabio and to tarnish her image including to endanger her life.

Professor Mgbeke had recently claimed that Akpoti-Uduaghan revealed to her that her sexual harassment allegation against Akpabio were fabricated and without evidence.

She also claimed that Akpoti-Uduaghan referred to Nigerian as G and H (Gullible and Hungry) as well as that her fight against Akpabio was meant to get him out of the way as Senate President to allow a sinister plot to “remove the Yoruba government” from power.

The Kogi Central Senator has since denied the claims, saying they were orchestrated to divert attention from her sexual harassment allegations against Akpabio.

The letter dated May 15, 2025 with reference number WIC/W/AB/W3/17/25 was submitted to the Police Headquarters by her solicitors,

West-Idahosa SAN & Co Chambers, Abuia and signed by Dr. Ehiogie West-Idahosa, SAN.

The letter reads in part: “On 28th  February 2025, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan publicly accused Senator Akpabio of sexual harassment during a televised interview, citing instances where he allegedly demanded sexual favours in exchange for legislative support.

“Rather than allow a fair inquiry, the Senate (under Senator Akpabio’s leadership) struck out her petition on procedural grounds and, on 6th March 2025, suspended her for six months under the pretext of “unruly” behaviour.

“This highly unusual suspension over a seating arrangement dispute was widely condemned as a punitive response to her allegations and an attempt to silence her voice.

“The backdrop of this case is therefore one of personal grievance: Senator Akpabio, feeling aggrieved and “traumatized” by the public accusation (as he himself described) and seeing his reputation at stake, had clear motive to retaliate and discredit Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan in any way possible.

“Shortly after the sexual harassment claim and suspension, our client observed a sudden surge of defamatory propaganda against her on social media and in certain press outlets.

“Evidence now shows that this was no organic backlash, but a coordinated smear campaign sponsored by Senator Akpabio as a form of revenge.

“A key figure in this campaign is one Dr. Sandra Chidinma Duru, a Texas-based Nigerian who styles herself as “Professor (Prof.) Mgbeke” on Facebook.

“It is pertinent to highlight further evidence demonstrating the operational nexus between Senator Godswill Akpabio and Dr. Sandra Duru. As inadvertently revealed during her live broadcast of 1st May 2025, Dr. Duru’s call log displayed multiple contacts, including “My Daddy Directline,” “IGP Kayode,” “Senator Akpabio” (with at least two saved numbers), “Oby Ndukwe” (the media aide to the Senate President, who later appeared on Politics Today with Seun Okinbaloye to publicly condemn our client), and “CP Imo Aboki Danjuma” as well as “Senator Ned Nwoko.”

“The presence of these names, particularly those occupying high-level positions within Nigeria’s security architecture, strongly suggests that Senator Akpabio and Dr. Duru were acting in concert, possibly with the support or knowledge of certain police officials.

“This revelation further strengthens our client’s position that the defamatory campaign and associated threats were not the isolated acts of a rogue individual, but the product of a coordinated effort involving Senator Akpabio and his political and security network, intended to discredit, harass, and endanger her.”

Akpoti-Uduaghan urged the police to carry out a comprehensive probe into the allegations, focusing on individuals involved in planning, funding, and execution.

“She called for questioning of Dr. Duru and other implicated individuals, including key witnesses and accomplices as well as a for forensic examination of electronic evidence, including doctored audio recordings, call logs, and digital files.

She also requested for security measures for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and key witnesses to ensure their safety.

“That the Police thoroughly investigate the veracity of all statements made by “Prof.Mgbeke” (now revealed to be Sandra Duru) during and after the 1 May 2025 broadcast, including all communications between her and known associates of Senator Akpabio.

“That statements and actions of third-party collaborators who publicly endorsed the defamatory broadcast, be examined to determine their knowledge of and participation in the conspiracy.

“In conclusion, we maintain that the actions against our client amount to a criminal enterprise violating multiple laws.

“We respectfully urge your service to painstakingly investigate the contents of this Petition and ensure that justice is expeditiously dispensed to all who may be found wanting regardless of their status in the Nigerian society,” Akpoti-Uduaghan said in the letter.

Court fixes June 27 for judgment in Natasha suit against Akpabio, others

A Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled judgment for June 27 in the suit filed by the suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, challenging her suspension from the Senate for six months.

Justice Binta Nyako Christmas set the date on Tuesday after parties in the suit made their final submissions and adopted their written addresses.

Justice Nyako said she will first decide the contempt claims by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and Natasha, then give her opinions on the various preliminary objections raised by the respondents and if necessary, determine the substantive suit.

She said: “I want to believe that all processes are in. What I am going to do is to first of all look at the issues of contempt and take a decision on it.

“Then, I will look at the notices of preliminary objection. If they succeeds, that is the end of the case and if they don’t, I will look at the originating summons filed by the plaintiff.”

Natasha is, in the fundamental rights enforcement suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/384/2025, claiming among others, that her right to fair hearing was not accorded her before she was suspended by the Senate.

Respondents in the suit are the Clerk of the National Assembly, the Senate, the President of the Senate, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Neda Imasuem (the Chairman, Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Code of Conduct).

On Tuesday Justice Nyako noted there was a new development in the case, which was the issue of contempt raised by Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio.

She said: “We have a new happening that came up yesterday. One from Mr Daudu (representing Akpabio) and one from the plaintiff.

“These two applications and the originating summons should be what should be focused on today,” she said.

She then directed parties to identify and adopt the documents they filed in relation to the contempt issue.

Natasha’s lawyer, Michael Numa (SAN), who  thanked the judge for prioritising the issues of contempt raised by the plaintiff and the defendants identified what he filed

Numa said his client’s application is seeking the court’s disciplinary action against all the defendants for their alleged contemptuous act.

Numa equally identified and adopted all their processes and  urged the the court to grant the prayers sought by the Senator.

He equally urged the court to overrule and dismiss the defendants’ preliminary objection and grant the reliefs sought in the originating motion.

Charles Yoila, who appeared for the clerk, Paul Daudu (SAN), who represented the Senate; Ogunwumiju who was counsel to Akpabio, and Valentine who appeared for Imasuem, also identified and adopted their processes, including the preliminary objection.

They urged the court to look at the set of facts, showing clearly the alleged disobedience to court order by the plaintiff.

The defendants urged the court to hold that it lacked jurisdiction  to entertain the suit and to dismiss the suit in its entirety.

  • Natasha’s ides of May and the vindication of Akpabio

Natasha’s ides of May and the vindication of Akpabio

The internet was abuzz the night of 2025 May Day, as a United States based activist, Dr Sandra Duru, with the moniker Prof Mgbeke, made an expose` on the suspended Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, as a manipulator, and embarking on a malicious campaign to malign the reputation of the person and President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

According to Prof Mgbeke, the Kogi Central Senator who was linked to her through a top opposition politician, had sought her  support to join in the campaign of calumny against Akpabio and she had actually started pilloring the man. Evidence abound on her social media pages. This was until she asked the Senator for evidence of the sexual harassment allegations. “Natasha told me there was nothing like sexual harassment. I was shocked. Honestly I broke down because I had already started fighting the Senate President, in my effort to support Natasha,” she said. According to her, the sexual harassment allegation was her strategy to garner public sympathy and support in the fight to discredit the Senate President.

For Prof Mgbeke, the confession by Natasha that there was no sexual harassment marked the turning point for her. “Natasha is on a mission to destroy men. I cannot watch her destroy our men, I cannot watch her destroy our sons, I cannot watch her destroy our girls who are following her blindly.”

In her continued desperation to nail Akpabio, Prof Mgbeke further said that after realising that her sexual harassment allegation wasn’t getting much traction and public sympathy, Natasha offered her N200 million to accuse the Senate President of organ harvesting, linking him with the death of a young girl who passed  away a few years ago.

She summed it up this way: “What is happening is not activism. It is an orchestrated strategy and an abuse of gender advocacy, a staged performance designed to provoke public sympathy and manufacture false narratives and target political opponents,” Mgbeke stated.

Read Also: AI projected to boost Nigeria’s economy by $58b by 2030

However before Prof Mgbeke’s explosive exposé, many discerning minds had asked Senator Natasha for evidence of the sexual harassment allegation. To take her seriously, many demanded concerete evidence in the form of private chats, love text messages, pictures, videos and voice recordings, call logs, etc, especially with her reputation of having made similar claims about other men in the past which turned out to be false accusations. Till date, she has not provided any scintilla of evidence despite making local and international media rounds her favourite pastime. All she was interested in was to drag the reputation of the Senate President in the mud.

Prof Mgbeke only confirmed what many Nigerians had suspected and some questions asked. How can a man sexually harass you in front of your husband and in the presence of many other senators? How can a victim of sexual harassment indulge in effusive praise and adoration of the abuser in the social media the day after the alleged incident? How can the victim go ahead to travel to different countries with the abuser and taking selfies in foreign countries with the same man whom she alleged sexually harassed her? In any case, why remain silent over such grievious act (by her admission not even informing her husband) for over one year until you were removed as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content and your seat in the Senate chamber was changed?

However the evidence of Prof Mgbeke were stunning and incontrovertible: from call logs, private chats, voice recordings of the Kogi senator, it became obvious that Senator Natasha was on a pull-him-down mission through fabricated allegations for political gains. More stunning were Natasha’s claim, according to Prof Mgbeke, of having recruited Dr Oby Ezekwesili and Dr Abiola Akiyode of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) to storm the Senate Committee sitting and how she bragged about having media organisations on her pay roll to do her biddings. She described her followers who swallowed her lies hook, line and sinker as “gullible and hungry” while those she recruited to wage this war were described as “useful idiots.”

In view of the weighty allegations of the Kogi Senator’s scheme, the security agencies, especially the Department of State Services (DSS)  and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), have to get to the roots of the allegation about Natasha’s plot to bring down a “Yoruba Government.” According to Prof Mgbeke, “She said the reason for the fight was not really about the Senate President but it is about the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, that they don’t want the Yoruba government to go beyond four years. She said there was no sexual harassment evidence of any kind.” To destabilize the Tinubu administration, her sponsors would reward her with the governorship of Kogi State or the Minister of Petroleum. “She said all she wanted was for the Senate President to step down, that the Senate President is the one shielding Nigeria’s President.”

This is hardly surprising though because no sooner had Natasha made her unfounded allegations than opposition politicians started making political capital out of it. Obviously, Natasha was not working alone. The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, jumped into the fray and talked about corruption (laugh out loud) former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki pontificated about the integrity of the Senate while Ezekwesili called on Akpabio to step aside. So obviously, Natasha was playing a political script, she was dancing naked to the drum beats of the opposition with President Bola Tinubu as their main target using the fabricated allegations against Akpabio.

The puerile attempt by Natasha to deny Prof Mgbeke’s allegations with hard evidence as “entirely untrue and most manipulated to serve Sandra Duru’s ulterior motive” is most unconvincing. It is true to her character. If with the avalanche of proofs and evidence which Prof Mgbeke said she has submitted to security agencies for forensic analysis, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan still denies knowing the US based activist, then, she is irredeemable. Concerned citizens are demanding for speedy investigation by security agencies and their findings made public while those found to be involved in the plot to destabilise the administration of President Tinubu be brought to justice on account of their conspiracy.

The story rings true with fact that there was never a thing like sexual harassment. It only existed in the imagination of the Kogi Senator and her gullible followers.
