Anambra poll: PPA holds primaries July 22

The Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) said on Saturday it would conduct its Anambra State governorship primaries on July 22.

The Anambra State governorship election holds November 18.

The PPA Chairman, Mr. Peter Ameh, announced the date at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja when he received the party’s governorship aspirant, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo, who was at the party secretariat to pick nomination and expression of interest forms.

Ameh described Ezeemo as a worthy party member who has shown faith with the party over the years.

He said: “As it stands, he is ready to participate in the July 22, 2017 party primaries. We will be the first party to conduct primaries and we will start our campaign ahead of all other political parties.

“What we will be looking at is the quality of the candidate. A candidate that has character and ready to fight corruption.

“First and foremost like I told you, we are working on a system that ensure people must participate in party primaries. People don’t just jump ships and say they are going to contest elections.”

  • PPA chieftain hails Buhari, Red Cross, over release of 82 Chibok Girls

A chieftain of Progressives Peoples Alliance (PPA), in Enugu state, Mr Godwin Ezeemo, has lauded President Muhammadu Buhari, Red Cross and Non-Governmental Agencies for the release of 82 Chibok Girls.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Boko Haram members in 2014 abducted more than 200 secondary school girls of Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok, Borno.

Twenty one of the girls were released in October 2016, while President directed the security agencies to continue the search until all of the affected girls were released and re-united with their families.

Ezeemo told NAN in Enugu on Sunday, that the release would help to check the emotional trauma the parents of the released girls might be facing for over three years.

He noted that the release of this “massive number’’ was an indication that the Federal Government and its partners had the capacity to release the remaining girls.

“I am overwhelmed with joy when I heard about the news.

“It is a good development, coming, timely, before emotional trauma sends the parents of these girls to their early graves.

“It is going to bring a lot of emotional and traumatic relief to these families that had anticipated the return of their daughters,’’ he said.

According to him, the release will also give Nigeria commendable respect in the international circle, once more.

Ezeemo, also a leading industrialist, commended the government of Switzerland for its special interest in ensuring a fruitful negotiation with the insurgents.

“I urge other countries and friends of Nigeria to follow the example of government Switzerland in helping Nigeria, practically, in solving its national challenges.”

2015: ‘INEC should convince Nigerians of sincerity’

    •Ohanaeze, PDP react

The governorship candidate of the Progressives Peoples Alliance (PPA) in last year’s election in Anambra State, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo, has said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should convince Nigerians of its sincerity to conduct a free and fair poll next year.

He spoke yesterday in Awka, following the release of next year’s election timetable by INEC at the weekend.

Ezeemo said people were yet to get over the inadequacies of Anambra poll, which was marred by logistic problems.

“What happened on November 16 was terrible. INEC should prove its sincerity by being committed this time, by ensuring a free and fair poll and a level-playing field for candidates,” he added.

The PPA chieftain said sensitive and non-sensitive materials, computers and other equipment needed for credible elections must be on ground, adding that politics of money and inducement should be discouraged.

He said people should be made to see why leaders should be elected, based on performance, noting that INEC could set up a committee to cross-check preparations as an assurance of its sincerity.

Ezeemo said the early release of the timetable was commendable.

He said the commission should embark on an aggressive political education to enlighten the people.

“It is not just enough to draw a timetable and release it to the people, it should be backed with actions.”

Anambra State Chairman of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze, Dr. Chris Eluemunoh, hailed INEC’s early release of the timetable.

He said it was a proof of its readiness to conduct a credible poll.

Eluemunoh said INEC had a task of ensuring that the poll became the best, adding that politicians should complement its effort.

He said the electoral body should be independent and ensure that the structures needed for a credible poll were in place.

State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Kenneth Emeakayi, said INEC had shown its commitment in enthroning democratic structures by its early release of the elections schedule.

  • Ezeemo presents manifesto in Onitsha

The commercial town of Onitsha yesterday stood still, as the Progressive Peoples Alliance’s (PPA’s) candidate in the governorship election, Chief Godwin Ezeemo, visited the town to present his manifesto.

People filled the All Saints playground, Onitsha to welcome the politician.

Ezeemo said if voted into office, he would wipe the tears of the indigenes and bring about a positive change.

He said he would implement five cardinal objectives, known as SHAPE: Security, Health, Agriculture, Power and Education.

The PPA National Chairman, Chief Sam Nkire, described the party as peaceful, adding that Ezeemo and his running mate, Prince Ralph Chikwenze, would deliver Anambra from bad governance.
