Gov.  Obaseki visits families of deceased women allegedly murdered by herdsmen

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo on Wednesday evening visited and condoled the families of two women who were allegedly murdered by suspected Fulani Herdsmen in Ewu on May 22, in the Esan-Central Local Government Area.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the deceased are: Mrs. Christiana Ariu of Eko-Ujeme quarters and Mrs. Matina Emoyon of Uzogolo quarters, both in Ewu.

The governor said that security had been beefed up in the area and in neighbouring communities stretching to Kogi, in order to avoid the occurrence of similar incidents in the area.

Obaseki said that the ravaging activities of Fulani herdsmen had become a threat to national security, adding that the Federal Government was doing something about it.

The governor said that the state was currently working out its modalities to curtail the activities of criminals who disguised as herdsmen in the state.

He urged communities to avail the government with intelligence information about security threats in their areas.

“We are coming up with certain measures to prevent what has just happened from happening again in the future.

“We will be relying on every community to give us information on time, so that we can curb such situations before it happens again.

“If we had known that people have been in the bush with their cattle for a few weeks, we would have dislodged them from there.

“If it is to feed their cattle, then we will come up with methods where anybody who brings cattle can take them to a particular place, where everyone knows that they are there and the cattle cannot roam around,’’ the governor said.

Obaseki assured the families of the bereaved of the state government support.

Speaking on behalf of the Ariu family, Mr. Sydney Ikhajiagbe, said that late Ariu was allegedly murdered by Fulani herdsmen while she was working on her farmland.

Ikhajiagbe said that foot prints of cattle were traced to the spot where the deceased was raped and murdered in her farm.

He said members of the community now lived in fear, after the incident.

“We are so scared about our lives that so many of us have abandoned their farmlands.

“Security should be beefed up in this community and in the neighbouring communities as well,’’ he said.

NAN recalls that the incidents happened on May 22.

Appeal Court reserves judgment in Edo election tussle

The Court of Appeal sitting in Benin City, Edo State, on Tuesday reserved judgment in an appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the state governorship election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and his party, challenging the verdict of the state governorship election petitions tribunal which upheld the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Godwin Obaseki’s victory in the election.

The five-man appeal panel headed by Justice M.B Dongban-Mensem reserved judgment indefinitely after listening to the arguments of all the Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) in the matter.

Ize-Iyamu and the PDP had through their lawyer, Yusuf Ali (SAN), filed an appeal against the judgment of the tribunal presided over by Justice Ahmed Badamasi, which gave judgment in favour of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Obaseki and the APC last Month.

Earlier, the panel which has Justices S. Tom Yakub, M.O. Bolaji-Yusuf, U.A. Ogakwu and Mohammed Mustapha as members, unanimously dismissed a Motion on Notice brought by Ize-Iyamu pursuant to Order 6 Rule 1, Court of Appeal Rules, 2016, and Section 36(1) of the Constitution for the correctiom/amendment of the trial court’s record of his evidence-in-chief.

He prayed for a leave of court to rely and use the evidence of the first appellant as recorded by Justice Gilbert Ngele (Member 1) of the trial tribunal instead of that of the Tribunal’s chairman.

The appellant also sought an order deeming the record of his evidence by Justice Ngele, made on January 30, as the correct record of his evidence-in-chief at the lower court.

Edo to partner with CAN to address social-economic challenges

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo, on Wednesday, said his administration would collaborate with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to address the socio-economic challenges facing the country.

Obaseki made this disclosure when he received the new executive members of the Edo chapter of CAN at the Government House in Benin.

The governor said the areas of collaboration would include, basic education, youth empowerment, primary health care, street trading and moral rebirth.

He said that the church should be at the forefront in the struggle for a better society, noting that the church carried a greater blame when the society failed.

“We must have a partnership; we have to go beyond what you have requested.

“The partnership has to exist for your own good and the good of government because our society must fail.

“We must join hands to strengthen our primary school system and technical education, so that our children can be hardworking and be useful to themselves.

“We can also train young boys and girls on the provision of basic health services; this will go a long way in reducing youth restiveness,” he said.

Obaseki said the partnership would also extend to the provision of better welfare for persons with special needs.

He urged the association to ensure that youth groups in their various churches participated in the State Government’s empowerment programmes.

The governor, however, expressed displeasure with the number of pilgrims, who absconded during the pilgrimage to Mecca, noting that it was not the right thing to do.

The governor also promised to do what is right in the sight of God, adding that God alone made it possible for him to be governor.

Earlier, the Edo chairman of CAN, Bishop Oyonnude Kure, lauded the governor for the achievements so far recorded by his administration.

Kure said that CAN was ready to support the present administration to ensure a stable society.

He said, “we want you to succeed and that is why we are here; you will need prayers and we are pledging the support of CAN”.

The CAN chairman enjoined the State Government to partner with the association in praying.

    Obaseki promises open administration

Gov Godwin Obaseki of Edo has promised to operate an open door policy and commended workers in the State for the trust they have in his administration.

The governor spoke at a dinner on Monday night to felicitate with members of the Nigeria Labour congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on 2017 May Day.

The dinner was held alongside an award night organised by the Edo chapters of NLC and TUC.

The governor assured that he would operate an open door policy with them provided they continued to have confidence in his administration.

“Nothing good thrives in a community where there is no trust, you have given me your trust and I will not betray that trust.

“Today marks a new dawn, I want to be able to look back and say while I was a governor, I never had an incident of strike.

“As long as you trust me, I will put every issue in front of you for dialogue”, he said.

Obaseki promised the workers that the hosting of the Workers Day dinner would be a yearly event.

The governor said his government did not the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), from collecting dues and levies from its members in the state.

He said the present administration had adopted electronic system for revenue collection sequel to the ban on collection of taxes and levies by non government agents.

Obaseki explained that the technology was being test run so that the union would start collection of tax and levies from its members via electronic payment before the end of May.

The governor also commended leaders of the labour unions for the presentation of awards to outstanding personalities who he said had contributed immensely to the development of the state.

Chairmen of the NLC and TUC in Edo, Emmanuel Ademokun and Marshall Orhue commended Obaseki for hosting the unions’ members to a dinner after gracing the May Day celebration earlier in the day.

The duo said that the dinner went to show that the governor was workers friendly.

They added that the labour unions working with the state government would build a stronger Edo state.

Former Gov. Oserheimen Osunbor, former Deputy Governor Pius Odubu and immediate past Secretary to the State Government, Julius Ihonvbere were honoured.

The organisers of the award said it was a tradition of the labour unions to present awards of excellence to outstanding Nigerians during workers day celebration.

  • We are in govt for all Edo people – Obaseki

We are in govt for all Edo people – Obaseki

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo says his administration is for all Edo people irrespective of party affiliations and ethnic backgrounds.

The governor, represented by his Deputy, Mr Philip Shaibu, stated this while interacting with a delegation of Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC), in Benin on Thursday.

Shaibu when a government had been formed after the election, the next stage is for the government to be all inclusive by allowing collaboration.

According to him, “we have our ideology, which is clear but that does not mean we will not allow other political parties which admire our leadership style and ideology or who have something meaningful to contribute.
“We are ready to welcome any member of other political parties with meaningful contributions and ideas.

Chairman of IPAC, Mrs Tracy Agol, said their mission was to promote inter-party dialogue and interactions among political parties.

She urged Obaseki to be magnanimous enough to accommodate members of other political parties who have something meaningful to contribute to his government.

  • Why we rejected Edo tribunal’s ruling-PDP

Why we rejected Edo tribunal’s ruling-PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has explained why it rejected Friday’s ruling of the Election Petitions Tribunal which affirmed the election of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Ahmed Badamasi, had in a unanimous judgment thrown out the petition of the PDP and its governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu for failing to support their pleadings with evidence as well as abandoning some pleadings in their petition.

State Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, who gave reasons why the party rejected the judgement said the tribunal threw away the results obtained from the inconclusive ballot recount.

Chief Orbih said the tribunal expected the party and its candidate to call over 2,000 witnesses within the 14 days allotted to prove its case.

Orbih noted that the tribunal through it pronouncement said different unit presiding officers could adopt different standards in the conduct of same election and that the tribunal was saying that there was no need for uniformity in the conduct of elections.

He said, “Conduct of an election is not a free-for-all exercise where anyone is at liberty to apply his own discretion. What Justice Badamasi was simply saying was that whether the presiding officers followed the regulations or not did not matter.

“For the first time ever, a judge redefined over-voting as a situation whereby the total number of votes cast exceeds the total number of registered voters. Is that not laughable? I think these are the salient issues that we will challenge.”

Orbih also challenged former governor Adams Oshiomhole to explain what he meant when he (Oshiomhole) referred to the tribunal verdict as “Mama Akara judgement.”

He stated that Oshiomhole’s comment suggested that Oshiomhole may have inadvertently exposed how his party purchased the verdict.

His words, “I watched former Governor Adams Oshiomhole on national television describing Friday’s judgement as Mama Akara judgement. This is about the first time Oshiomhole will be describing things the way they are in his political life.”

“We know what goes into the making of akara and we also know that the Mama Akara will not part with her akara for nothing. So, we are demanding from Oshiomhole to tell Edo people and indeed Nigerians what was handed the Mama Akara before she let go of her akara.”

  • Just let Godwin Obaseki be

    Just let Godwin Obaseki be

Edo people escaped the invading and importuning clutches of severe misrule and diabolic maladministration by the whiskers when the spirits of the ancestors and the provisions of the law booted out the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to usher in good governance under Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. PDP had been in power for 10 excruciating years and had bled the soul of the heartbeat state dry, looted the exchequer, and done enough damage to undo the exemplary works of the late Dr. Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia.

Again, the desire for good governance and economic justice prevailed on September 28, 2016 as Mr. Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate earned a resounding victory over his PDP rival, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu at the Edo Gubernatorial election and thus earned the confidence of the people to be their governor for the next four years. He was true to his middle name – Nogheghase, ‘a man whose time has come’.

That victory demonstrated the people’s yearning for continuity in governance. Since then, there has been no let-up in the pace of development in all sectors of the state’s economy. A key pillar of that administration was Mr Godwin Obaseki, who was the Chairman of the State’s Economy and Strategy Team that midwifed many meaningful programmes to the Edo people.

It was therefore no surprise that as Adams Oshiomhole’s tenure ended, the popular choice for his successor was Obaseki, who, as political experts rightly predicted, swept his way to power and assumed office as the state’s Executive Governor on Nov 12, 2016. Not all, however, appreciated the gubernatorial election victory. Desirous to resume its baulked buffet at the State’s exchequer, PDP alleged that its candidate was short-changed in the election.

Nice enough, the legal tussle took its full course and a verdict was given by the Edo Election Petition Tribunal, which unanimously validated Governor Godwin Obaseki’s claim to the office of service at Osadebe Avenue, Benin City. The judgment was clear and unambiguous, underscoring the imperative for the governor to serve out his 4-year tenure without hindrance. The victory certainly is an impetus for the governor to stride on with the accelerated tempo of social and infrastructural development of the state.

The baneful virus of godfatherism had greatly crippled and perverted the electoral system in the state while also limiting the state’s development in many ways. The administration of Adams Oshiomhole battled the state’s godfathers fiercely to the point of ‘retiring’ them from active politics.

His campaign mantra of one-man-one-vote was effective enough to stop the state’s godfathers in their nefarious strides. The Edo people keyed into the mantra, and when it mattered most, they ensured that their votes indeed counted. The radical shift from the beshrewing spectre of godfatherism pleased Edo people, irrespective of their political leanings, especially with the acknowledgement that a government that truly earned the legitimacy of the people will be careful enough to safeguard their interests through responsible governance.

Notwithstanding this, the PDP opposition exercised its right to legal redress over perceived wrongs and as the tribunal judgment has shown, such standpoint was misjudged, ill-conceived and misdirected. Perceptive political observers think that it is time that Nigerian politicians began to re-orientate themselves in matters of electoral contests such that, in a reasonably transparent and credible election where only one candidate out of many will emerge winner, they must learn to accept political defeat in good faith and with equanimity.

It is also beyond dispute that needless legal wrangling in the face of obvious electoral defeat impedes smooth governance. The nation’s extant constitution prescribes a term of four years for elective offices and that period is quickly exhausted for working governor. Four years is not an eternity, for which our attitude to electoral defeat must be ‘do or die’.

Irrespective of political affiliations, the Edo electorate consists people from the same stock; hence, prolonged electoral acrimonies must be avoided, as it can certainly not help meaningful development. Opposition in partisan politics is a healthy phenomenon, but immoderately executed, it becomes an anathema to a society’s progress.

Why ‘fight to quench’ when another opportunity could present itself to fight another day? The Christian Holy Scripture teaches that the race is never to the swift nor the battle to the strong, but that time and chance happens to them all. Though we may disagree with candidates for election, once the results of an election are announced, we should become one again until the next election. We should support the victor, who could even pick some of his cabinet nominees from the opposition for the good of the state and for the furtherance of democracy.

Governor Godwin Obaseki is a well-tested and reputed technocrat and Edo state is fortunate to have him now. Since his election, fundamental measures for the state’s economic growth have been implemented. He may not be a loud governor, but he is no less effective as he is quietly working and things are going. Everyone, including the opposition knows this; hence, there must be no room for distractions.

It would be recalled that Dr Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia passed on last month, and in death, he was celebrated like no other Edo man in recent times because of the legacies he left behind as a two-time governor of Bendel State. Such legacies are what Edo State desperately needs, and Governor Godwin Obaseki is a man with prospects, vision and determination and any further legal wrangling over elections should be jettisoned. 2020 is not far away! Let Edo people think wiser and let Governor Godwin Obaseki be!

  • Oshiomhole hails tribunal judgment

    Oshiomhole hails tribunal judgment

Former governor of Edo, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, on Friday commended the judgment delivered by the Election Petitions Tribunal on the Edo 2016 Governorship Election, affirming the election of Gov. Godwin Obaseki.

Speaking to newsmen in Benin, Oshiomhole said the judiciary still remained the hope for common man.

“The judgment is sound and a testimony that the people of Edo never voted for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

‘‘The petition was a busy body one to distract the electorate; this was just like ‘Mama Akara’ judgment going to see over non-issue.’’

Oshiomhole further said that the judgment has shown that there were still men and women of good character in the judiciary.

‘‘This will serve as a deterrent to some people who can say whatever they like about the judiciary.

‘‘But it has shown it (judiciary) has men & women of good charter of courage and knowledge,’’ he said. (NAN)

In a relayed development, the counsel to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Victor Ohiosunua, has appealed to PDP chieftains to support Obaseki to develop the state.

Ohiosunua made the call in in Benin after the Election Petitions Tribunal in Benin dismissed the petition filed by PDP candidate, Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu, challenging Obaseki’s election.

“I want to appeal to the petitioners to joining hands with the governor to develop and carry the state to the next level.

‘‘The business of the governor is tedious and the few five months the present governor has spent in the office, shows his capability and focus to take Edo to the next level.

‘‘The logical order the tribunal made today is the right one for them to make.

‘‘We are happy that the votes and wishes of the Edo people who voted on Sept. 28, 2016 has been restored,” Ohiosunua said.

NAN reports that the Justice Ahmed Badamasi-led three-member Tribunal had dismissed the petitioners’ claims based on no credible evidence to prove their case.

The tribunal, therefore, upheld Obaseki’s victory in the governorship election of Sept. 28, 2016, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

On his part, Ken Muzia (SAN), counsel to Obaseki who also commended the tribunal’s judgment, said the tribunal did a proper review of the evidence.

“The tribunal has done a fantastic job, what we should be thinking of is the development of the state,” Muzia added.

    Edo tribunal dismisses Ize-Iyamu’s petition

Edo State Election Petition Tribunal on Friday dismissed the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

The tribunal upheld the September 28, 2016 election of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The Chairman of the three-man panel, Justice Ahmed Badamasi, held that the petitioners failed to support their pleadings with evidence as well as abandoned some pleadings in their petition.

Justice Badamasi held that many witnesses called by the petitioners were discredited during cross examination and gave hearsay evidence.

He said, “The petitioners have failed to prove their case with credible evidence and it is therefore dismissed.

“The much talked about ticking and over voting by the petitioners have not been specifically proved beyond reasonable doubts. And not calling witnesses to prove their allegations of corrupt practices and over voting was fatal to their case and is deemed to have abandoned their pleadings.

“Accordingly, the petition has failed and is hereby dismissed.”

Pastor Ize-Iyamu had in his petition asked the tribunal to declare him winner of the governorship election.

Respondents in the suit were Governor Obaseki, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the APC.

Hearing on the petition began on January 7 and ended on April 3.

During the course of trial, the petitioners called 92 witnesses while Governor Obaseki called 68 witnesses.

The APC called 15 witnesses and INEC did not call any.

Counsel to INEC, Onyinye Anumonye, argued that there was no need to call witnesses that would repair the case already damaged by the petitioners’ witnesses.

Onyinye, however, tendered 203 documents including 200 copies of Form EC8 (B) for the 18 local government areas, one copy of Form EC8(C) for the 18 LGAs of the state, Form EC8 (D) for Edo State and Form EC8 (E).

The petitioners tendered the voters’ register from 16 local government areas as well as the Forms EC8A, Form EC8B and EC8C, being results sheets for all the polling units, wards and local government areas of the state.
