  • Edo primary schools now ‘well organised’, says Obaseki

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has said the 75 per cent of public-run primary schools in the state being managed under the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (Edo-BEST) programme are now well organised.

Speaking while inspecting primary schools under the Edo-BEST programme in Benin City, the Edo State capital, the Governor said the schools were being provided with books, furniture and other resources to promote teaching and learning.

He said: “Seventy-Five per cent of our schools are under Edo-BEST and we have 25 per cent to go. We have ordered 25,000 seats for our pupils which are under production. The school furniture is being constructed at the Benin Technical College now, Government Science and Technical College (GSTC), and others will come from the Edo Production Centre. All the furniture is being made locally here in the state.

“All Edo-BEST schools have books and it is not cheap but quite expensive. Each child in the programme costs money. Our schools are now well organised and the level of participation of our pupils is high. I am impressed that the training we have given to our teachers and administrators is yielding results.”

The governor, who inspected Ivbiotor Primary School and Itohan Primary School, in Benin City, said 9,000 teachers had been trained under the Edo-BEST programme.

Obaseki said the state’s limited resources were the reason why the remaining 25 per cent schools were yet to be coopted under Edo-BEST.  He, however, said as soon as the state got funds from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), more schools would benefit from the reforms being implemented through the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

“When people complain that we are not distributing money, they should know that we don’t have enough to train the children. So, where do we get money to give out? We don’t have all the resources, but we are sourcing for funding from UBEC and as soon as we get more funding, we will spread the Edo-BEST programme across all our schools,” he said.

Obaseki said his administration would deploy more resources to the education sector if given the chance.

“We will strive very hard to ensure the education sector is transformed if I am allowed to use state resources to train our children,” he said.

Governor Obaseki said the partnership would help in curbing medical tourism in the state, as plans have reached advanced stage for the reestablishment of the state’s School of Nursing and Midwifery and upgrade it to world-class standard to ensure adequate training of health personnel.

The governor described UBTH as a critical partner in the state’s healthcare sector, adding that the state government will enter an agreement with the management of the hospital to formalise the partnership as soon as possible.

Dr Obaseki said the hospital has recorded successes in carrying out specialised medical services and was ready to assist the state government-owned hospitals on similar services, noting, “The state’s hospitals need manpower in performing surgeries and we can assist in this area.”

The CMD commended Governor Obaseki for his intervention programme in the health sector, especially the state government’s response to Lassa Fever and Yellow Fever outbreaks.

According to him, the renovation of Primary Healthcare Centres and relative industrial harmony in the health sector are also part of the successes recorded by the Obaseki-led administration.

At the EXCO meeting on Thursday, the governor expressed appreciation to his deputy for gallantly holding fort while he was away, noting that his performance has shown Edo people the smooth working relationship they both share as well as their uniform vision for the development of the state.

  • How Obaseki revived public education in Edo

With the training of over 8,000 teachers, provision of Information Communication Technology (ICT) teaching gadgets and the upsurge in enrolment of pupils in public schools, Governor Godwin Obaseki’s effort to revamp basic education is yielding fruits, reports PRECIOUS IGBONWELUNDU.

When Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki talked tough on revamping basic education at the twilight of 2017, not many took him seriously considering the facelift his predecessor Adams Oshiomhole had done in many public primary and secondary schools across the state.

Observers had thought the governor would continue in the rehabilitation of public schools, which have suffered years of disrepair and neglect such that parents sought solace in private schools.

In promising to continue the education revolution initiated by his boss, Obaseki howbeit, stated emphatically his core derivative in education restructuring was to tackle the anachronistic teaching method through a robust human capital development to bring teachers in the employ of the state in touch with new technologies, modern best practices that will assist in tutoring pupils who can match their peers from any part of the world.

To kick start the reform, Obaseki announced the constitution of a new Edo State Universal Education Board (Edo-BEST) headed by Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe, mandating them to look into retaining teachers, reviewing curricula in addition to the improving the aesthetics of public schools.

The revolution did not begin until April last year when an inaugural set of 2,000 teachers drawn from over 300 public primary schools across the state were trained on new teaching methods including the use of ICT tools; harmonisation of teaching and learning outcomes in primary schools as well as adoption of interactive classroom management model, among others.

However, not much attention was paid in the strides recorded in repositioning basic education until Dr. Oviawe announced recently that enrolment into public primary schools recorded an upshoot of 20,000 last year.

Giving account on the gains recorded since last April, Dr. Oviawe said 8700 teachers were trained and deployed to about 931 public primary schools to improve reading and numerical skills of pupils, with rehabilitation ongoing in 230 public schools including Ojirami Primary School in Ojirami in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area (LGA); Ugbogo Primary School in Igarra; Amegor Primary School in Uwelu, Egor LGA; Eweka and Olua Primary Schools in Egor LGA;  Ivbiyeneva Primary School in Ikpoba Okha LGA; Aduwawa Primary School in Ikpoba Okha, Uhie Primary School, Egbokor, Idunmwingun, Iguere, Evboeghae and Oza Primary Schools in Orhionmwon LGA.

Another plus in the basic education reformation, Dr. Oviawe said, was the  inclusion of members of school host community in administration and management of the schools known as the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC).

“The SBMC is made up of members of the host community and others appointed by the state government, who have been trained to monitor quality, protect infrastructure and ensure efficient management of the schools to assure quality.

“There is a total of 11,688 members of the SBMC in Edo State, who help the school management in administering the schools, providing needed community input to promote good governance,” she said.

Passing a vote of confidence on the SBMC regime, Obaseki last week said the government won’t invest in any school that did not have the committee in place.

He stated that the SBMC would ensure schools were better managed since they and the communities will take charge of maintenance of the facilities after construction.

“We are committed to ensuring that the schools in Edo State are in good shape. We wanted the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) to be in place so they can play a critical role in ensuring that the schools are well run and that whatever is provided for the schools are not vandalised,” said Obaseki at an interactive forum.
