NCCE shuts illegal college of education in Gombe

The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has shut down Lakwanjang College of Education and Entrepreneurship, Kaltungo, Gombe State.

The NCCE said that the college had been operating illegally in the State for over two years.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Professor Monday Joshua, who led a crack team from the NCCE Headquarters, Abuja to raid the institution, said the college was operating from a ramshackle primary school in the State.

According to him, information got to the management of the commission that an institution in Kaltungo, was running Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) illegally.

Prof. Joshua said that the institution had advertised for and admitted unsuspecting students for two academic sessions without any involvement of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

He warned the students of the college that any certificates obtained from the illegal programmes would not be recognized in Nigeria.

According to a statement on Thursday in Abuja endorsed by the commission’s Public Relations Officer, Mallam Garba Sulieman, said that the team from NCCE to close down the illegal college of education was surprised to learn from the students that the college conducted classes only in the evenings in the premises of a primary school at the Nasarawa area of Kaltungo town.

The college had claimed through an advertisement that it offered NCE programmes in Primary Education Studies, Biology, Islamic Religion studies, Christian Religion Studies, Hausa Language, Mathematics, Computer studies, Business Education, Economics, Social Studies, Arabic Medium and NCE in English.

The statement said that the NCCE boss on discovering the existence of the college ordered its immediate shutdown for alleged breach of the laws for the establishment of Colleges of Education in Nigeria as contained in the Act establishing the Commission.

The management of the commission, according to the statement, has commenced necessary action to prosecute the promoters of the illegal institution.

The Statement said: “The attention of NCCE had earlier been drawn to unconfirmed information that an institution existed in Kaltungo, illegally running NCE programme.

“The management of NCCE consequently put up a team to investigate the institution based on the information obtained.

“On Friday, 22nd January, 2016, the team from NCCE led by the Executive Secretary of the Commission, including Heads of Academic programmes Department and other senior staff of the Commission, visited the College on facts finding.

“The College has operated illegally, purportedly training NCE teachers for the past two academic sessions, without recourse to the extant laws that should cover its establishment and operation.

“The said Lakwanjang College of Education and Entrepreneurship, Kaltungo, is hereby closed down with immediate effect. The students and parents of the said College and the general public are to note that the NCE programmes purportedly run in the College have never been accredited and the College had never obtained approval to run the programmes.

“Any certificates that will arise from such illegal programmes will not be recognized in Nigeria. This action is taken based on the mandate of NCCE, and also to save teacher education in Nigeria from further ridicule.”

  • ‘Engage youths positively’

All Progressives Congress (APC) Zonal Vice Chairman, Gombe South, Julius Ishaya has urged youths to shun violence.

Ishaya was reacting to the incessant clashes among youths, especially the Gombe State Corps Marshals.

He said: “It is bad for people to be clashing and killing themselves in the name of politics. The APC is against it and will never encourage restiveness or thuggery. We do not want anyone to die or get injured because of politics, because the people are at the centre of our activities.”

Ishaya said although youth restiveness was not peculiar to the state, the government was not taking measures to reduce it.

He said the solution to restiveness was to create jobs and positively engage young minds.”

Ishaya assured residents that the APC would bring out the best in youths, if voted into power.

Suspected thugs kill paramilitary men in Gombe

Suspected thugs have killed two members of the Gombe State Corps Marshal, the Chief of Staff, Gombe State Government House, Alhaji Ahmed Yayari, has said.

He spoke yesterday at the inauguration of the 11 committees of the Gombe Unity and Development Forum, held at the palace of the Emir of Gombe.

  • Joy as Emir reclaims throne

    Joy as Emir reclaims throne

The entire emirate of Pindiga in Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State came alive as Alhaji Mohammed Seyoji Ahmed was reappointed to the traditional stool he vacated nine years ago.

He was received amidst celebrations. The palace and its surroundings were filled to capacity. Residents of the emirate, young and old, scrambled to catch a glimpse of him.

Others sang his praise, expressing their joy for his return. They sang and danced from one end of the town to the other as well as in and out of the palace. Some even wept for joy.

The groundswell of merriment witnessed on Monday, August 12, 2013 upon the return of His Royal Highness, Alhaji Ahmed seemed to have obliterated the memories of his then successor, Alhaji Adamu Haruna Yakubu who was removed about two weeks before.

“That  could only mean one of two things or both; either Seyoji is far more popular or his successor left much to be desired or both,” said a member of the community, Malam Isa Adamu as he spoke about the celebration of the reception of the new traditional ruler.

Alhaji Adamu Haruna Yakubu had been on the throne for the last nine years. But within the last couple of years, his antics regarding public interest daily pointed to his eventual fate, especially when they assumed an intolerable dimension of late.

It therefore did not come as a surprise when he was asked to step aside to give room for credible investigation after which he was found wanting and ultimately sent packing and Alhaji Ahmed Jauro, Galadima Pindiga was appointed to oversee the affairs of the emirate pending the appointment of a substantive Emir.

Adamu Yakubu was, among other things, accused of causing disunity, disaffection and ill-feelings among the people of his emirate, inciting the public against government and gross insubordination to constituted authority – the government. And when the powers-that-be could not condone his gross breach of the rules any longer, he was eased off the traditional seat for peace and development to reign.

But this was not until he was duly investigated and found guilty of the indictments levelled against him. This was confirmed by the Secretary to the Gombe State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Sule Bage at the Emir’s Palace in Pindinga when he said a committee set up by the government to investigate the many complaints brought against the former Emir, Alhaji Adamu Haruna Yakubu, found him guilty.

He added that “the committee investigated and found the former Emir to be disloyal and among other things not supportive of Government.”

The SSG further explained in a press release that “in exercise of the powers vested in him by the Creation of Emirates, Districts, Villages, Wards and Appointment and Deposition of Emirs and Chiefs (Amendment) Law of 2004, His Excellency Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, OON, (Talban Gombe), Governor of Gombe State has approved the appointment of Alhaji Mohammed Seyoji Ahmed as the Emir of Pindiga with effect from 12th August, 2013.”

Adamu Haruna Yakubu was replaced exactly two weeks after by Alhaji Mohammed Seyoji Ahmed who was unjustifiably thrown out nine years ago by the immediate past administration in the state, using the instrumentality of the Emirate’s kingmakers constituted by the same government without taking public interest into cognizance.

But the good thing here is that Seyoji (as the new Emir is fondly called) has not just returned, but his then successor, now his predecessor was removed in the most neutral and just manner which reflects the principles of fairness, equity and justice Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo has always preached.

The new Emir was appointed on the recommendations of the reconstituted Kingmakers Council of Pindiga Emirate which received interest from six candidates within the three ruling houses of the Emirate that included the House of Shuaibu, Hassan and Yakubu, explained the SSG.

Alhaji Sule Bage then charged the new Emir to be responsible to all persons within his emirate and to avoid revenge or discrimination of any sort because his enthronement was ordained by God. He also drew the attention of the new Emir to the need for obedience to constituted authority by ensuring that he takes permission before traveling out of the state at any point in time or for any reason.

The SSG also announced some adjustments in the Emirate where one of the contestants to the Emir’s throne, Alhaji Mustafa Aliyu Hassan was appointed the District head of Kashere while Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed Jauro was moved from being the District Head of Kashere to Gwaram, also as its District Head.

But it was the Wazirin Pindiga, Alhaji Samaila Mua’zu Hassan who made it clear to traditional leaders that their stool should not be mixed up with politics; rather, it should serve as a unifying factor and a bridge between the government and the people.

The Waziri of Pindiga, equally from a ruling house in the emirate reminded all and sundry that Seyoji’s recent reinstatement should not be seen as a continuation of the initial reign that was truncated nine years ago but an entirely different ball game.

Rightly reacting to words of wisdom, the new Emir promised to be that pillar on which the people could actually rest on and be rest assured of the needed support, a rallying point and a symbol of unity with an assurance to be guided by the rules of his engagement.

Alhaji Mohammed Seyoji Ahmed was deposed as a Second Class Emir and by providence returned as a ‘First Class’.

  • Fishermen ask for help

Fishermen in Difa riverside community of Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State have appealed to the state government to assist them with fishing gadgets or funds to boost their occupation.

The leader of the fishermen, popularly known as ‘Sarkin Ruwa,’ Malam Haruna Manaja, made the appeal while speaking with journalists in the area.

Manaja noted that most of the fishermen in the village were forced to abandon their occupation due to lack of money to buy fishing nets, canoes, hooks and other items necessary for the business.

The fishermen boss, who said there were about 100 fishermen in the village about 10 years ago, expressed regrets that most of them were forced to abandon the job due to lack of fishing items.

‘’About eight years ago, we had about 100 fishermen in this village who were earning their living through fishing.

‘’But as I talk to you now, we have just over 30 or at most 40 persons fishing now.

‘’Some of them left fishing for farming and others for other menial jobs, because they could not afford to buy fishing items, ‘’ he said.

The sarkin ruwa also decried the damages done to the fishing items by hippopotamuses in the river and called on the government to permit them to kill ‘troublesome’ hippopotamuses in the river.

He stated that the fishermen were empowered as the income generated through the fish business was able to sustain them.

He said that unemployment and idleness among the citizenry would be reduced and more people, especially youths, if the economy received a boost.

The leader recalled that he and some of his colleagues lost their canoes to last year’s flooding.

The reports that Difa, one of the communities on the shores of the Dadin Kowa dam, is famous in fishing activities.

  • Dankwambo’s model for youth empowerment in Gombe State

Dankwambo’s model for youth empowerment in Gombe State

In the time past, life in Gombe State was a nightmare because of the level of violence unleashed on the people of the state by some restive youths, who were known as ‘Yan Kalare’. But today, barely two years since Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo was sworn in as the governor of the state, one can authoritatively say Gombe is a restive-free state, or if you like, a Kalare-free state.

This is because of the series of youth development and empowerment programmes and policies evolved and religiously implemented by the governor. Mainly executed through the Ministry of Youth Empowerment and Poverty Alleviation, the issues of making life better for Gombe youths is the bottom line of every developmental stride executed in virtually all the sectors of the state.

The ray of hope that people saw when the governor first dissociated himself from youths restiveness and then publicly proscribing them during his inauguration has developed into an awe-inspiring atmosphere of friendliness in the state.

This followed the deliberate pronouncement and implementation of policies and programmes designed to‘re-orientate’ and rehabilitate the hitherto restive youths with a view to reintegrating into the social environment in the state. More so, that these policies and programmes are deliberately aimed at aiding them to be useful to themselves, families and the state in general.

Accordingly, in the first batch of reorientation and rehabilitation programme, a total of 1,200 youths were recruited, out of which 1,197 successfully completed the three-week rehabilitation at the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) permanent orientation camp in Malam Sidi, headquarters of Kwami Local Government Area. After they were trained, the youths are now serving as ward, traffic and environmental marshals in the state.

“The testimonies are there and people are very happy with the programme; even the youths themselves. Friends of those that participated in the rehabilitation exercise have seen the advantage and can not wait to be part of it,” said the Commissioner of Youths Empowerment and Poverty Alleviation, Alhaji Mijinyawa Labaran while commenting on the Corps Marshal scheme established by the government.

The success story and many other testimonies underscore the untold turnaround in the life and fortunes of the youths that went through the three-week reorientation cum rehabilitation exercise initiated by the Dankwambo-led administration in Gombe state to set the stage for return of peace and tranquility to Gombe State.

These marshals have so far made tremendous impact in the areas of ferreting information, sanitation, traffic control, maintaining orderliness and lots more. A good number of them were part of those selected from the state during the last army recruitment exercise.

In recognition of their exemplary commitment, 330 of the marshals were selected and trained at the Citizenship and Leadership Training Institute in Shere Hills, Jos-Plateau State.  After their training, they now serve as supervisors and Monitors of the marshals.

Considering the huge benefits and growing yearnings by youths to enroll in the marshal programme, government has concluded plans to enlist another batch of 1,200 youths for the reorientation and rehabilitation programme.

“We are just waiting for the current batch of the National Youths Service Corps to finish orientation exercise at the camp, after which we will move in and commence the training”, Labaran further explained.

Preceding the rehabilitation programme was another intervention to empower 320 youths through trainings in seven different trades from four skills acquisition centres across the state at the cost of well over N480,000 each. The graduate trainees were resettled with tools of the trades they learnt while the governor approved that an interest-free loan of N200,000 be given to each of them after fulfilling some conditions to enable them set up businesses.

The programme has now been scaled up to accommodate 520 youths and 16 trades where government is expected to expend N228 million in the training, allowances to both the trainees and trainers. At present, the training manual has been developed by the consultant and any moment, the training will commence for the youths. After they complete the training programme, government plans to provide them with similar tool kits for the setting up of their businesses.

According to Alhaji Mijinyawa Labaran, “The youths would equally upon completion of their training receive a credit facility of two hundred thousand naira with kits of the trade they have learnt to enable them start-off. But during the training period, each trainee would be given a monthly stipends of N6,000 to augment their transportation to the centre and to sustain their interest and commitment to the scheme.

The Dankwambo’s policies in empowering the youths, has concluded arrangements for the distribution of 867 tricycles (Keke-NAPEP) to youths in the state. The aim is to alleviate poverty and enhance their economic empowerment.

In the same vein, a tricycle assembly plant has been established to train 1,000 youths who would be engaged in assembling the Completely Knocked Down (CKD) parts of 550 units of tricycles to be brought from Pakistan and subsequent importations of tricycle CDKs. A reasonable number of fully coupled tricycles will be supplied from Steyr Nigeria Limited, Bauchi.

The interesting thing about the programme is that the 1,000 youths to be engaged in the assemblage of these tricycles would be employed by government while the plant will also serve other neighbouring states.

Another programme which the present government has embraced to alleviate poverty is the Condition Cash Transfer (CCT) scheme in collaboration with the Federal Government. As a programme under the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs), the state enrolled 1,500 beneficiaries, comprising the poorest of the poor, the disabled and other less privileged persons in the state.

To sum up the benefit of this scheme, at the end of the year, its multiplier effect will have touched the lives of 3,000 persons. To expand the programme to other numerous poor, government plans to scale up the scheme to accommodate about 5,000 beneficiaries across the state.

As an agrarian state, the Gombe State government also plans to collaborate with the Federal College of Horticulture, Dadin Kowa town of Yamaltu Deba Local Government of the state to engage 1,000 youths who would be given one hectare of land each to engage in farming. Government has began talks with a Chinese firm to train youths in modern farming techniques in animal fattening, fishery, poultry and crop production.

The Dankwambo-led administration has also taken advantage of the federal government’s Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) where another batch of 3,000 youths were engaged for various poverty alleviation programmes.

Youths are unarguably central to the development of any society because they are the strongest, most vibrant and obviously the future leaders. Therefore, every future plan must be built around them to ensure that they are given proper attention that would translate to a brighter tomorrow for individuals and the nation at large.

This is the impetus behind the various intervention programmes and other indirect programmes in education, agriculture, sports development, health among other sectors of the state.

Today, the youths are indeed having a better deal than ever; no wonder the atmosphere of restiveness hitherto witnessed in the state has given way to a hospitable situation as everybody is now busy engaged in one activity or the other for self sustenance and development
