  • Chelsea down lively Fulham 2-1 in entertaining London derby

First half goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Jorginho earned Chelsea a 2-1 win over struggling Fulham in an entertaining south-west London English Premier League (EPL) derby on Sunday.

On-loan Argentine striker Higuain volleyed home Chelsea’s first after a perfectly-timed run on to a 21st minute cross by Cesar Azpilicueta overlapping with Willian down the right.

Yet barely six minutes had later Craven Cottage erupted when Calum Chambers drifted unmarked to the back post and scored from a Ryan Babel cross following a corner kick.

Fulham’s players rushed to celebrate with new interim coach Scott Parker.

It was Parker’s first game in charge following the sacking of Claudio Ranieri, a former Chelsea boss, after less than four months in charge.

The jubilation was short-lived, as Brazilian Jorginho put Chelsea back in front in the 31st minute, thumping in a cut-back ball by Eden Hazard from outside the area.

Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga was back in goal after being dropped in midweek over his refusal to be substituted during last Sunday’s League Cup final.

He had to deal with a swirling wind off the Thames River and made a series of sharp saves from Aleksandar Mitrovic, Tom Cairney, Ryan Sessegnon and Joe Bryan.

Fulham were on top for significant periods of the second half and had a goal disallowed for offside but the result kept them 19th, 10 points from the safety zone.

  • EPL: Higuain on song as Chelsea thrash Huddersfield

Gonzalo Higuain scored his first brace with Eden Hazard also got two goals in Chelsea’s 5-0 victory over Huddersfield at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The win ended a troubled week for boss Maurizio Sarri, following Wednesday’s 4-0 loss to Bournemouth – their heaviest league defeat in 23 years.

Higuain, who signed on loan from Juventus in the January transfer, opened the scoring in the 16th minute.

N’Golo Kante played in Higuain with a delightful reverse pass to beat the offside trap and the Argentine striker finished first time, lashing his shot in at the near post.

In another development, Ashley Barnes’ penalty deep into second-half stoppage-time got a 1-1 draw for Burnley against fellow strugglers Southampton at Turf Moor.

Barnes calmly stroked home from the spot after Jack Stephens had handled the ball inside the box under pressure from substitute Peter Crouch.

Wolverhampton Wanderers sealed their place in the top half of the Premier League with a third successive top-flight win as Everton once again conceded from a set-piece.

Ruben Neves fired the visitors ahead with a penalty after Leighton Baines had fouled Matt Doherty. Andre Gomes  equalized for Everton before Wolves restored their lead from a free-kick. Raul Jimenez headed home Joao Moutinho’s set-piece before Leander Dendoncker sealed a thoroughly deserved three points with a volley.

  • Expect no less than before at Russia 2018 as quarter-finals get underway

The 2018 FIFA World Cup enters the quarter-finals stage on Friday, with the France versus Uruguay fixture at Nizhny Novgorod kicking off a two-day line-up of four potentially-explosive matches.

The quarter-finals have come with the usual expectations and surprise element of any tournament of this nature, yet they have not come without a trace of the unexpected.

The first round/group phase did not do so much to shock us, other than see off title-holders Germany, world number 10 Poland and the five African sides.

However, the Round of 16 has lived up to expectations, not just with the exit of 2010 champions Spain, two-times champions Argentina and Portugal, but the teams’ star players.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Andres Iniesta, Isco, Diego Costa, Angel Di Maria,Gonzalo Higuain, Ricardo Quaresma, Sergio Ramos and Javier Mascherano are now watching the competition from their homes.

They joined the likes of Tony Kroos, Thomas Muller, Mikel Obi, Victor Moses, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Manuel Neuer and Robert Lewandowski who had been on the sidelines pretty much earlier.

Their situation, very much unfavoured, is what the likes of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, as well as Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe will now try to avoid.

France with their array of megastars such as Pogba, Mbappe, Griezmann, Olivier Giroud and N’Golo Kante will be wary of what Suarez and Cavani can do upfront.

But the Uruguayan defence line should worry them much more, with the Atletico Madrid defensive pair of Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez at the centre of affairs.

Later on Friday, Belgium who made an incredible comeback from two goals down to win 3-2 will face Brazil at Kazan and knowing that a confrontation with Brazil or Belgium awaits.

Brazil should rather be wary of Belgium, with Eden Hazard and Romelo Lukaku, have gone 23 games unbeaten and have the best record at this tournament so far.

They have won all their matches so far, scoring 12 and conceding four goals, but the grittiness which saw them through against Japan is something Brazil will need much of.

Brazil have struggled to survive against Switzerland, Costa Rica and Serbia, in spite of Neymar, Willian, Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Casemiro, Gabriel Jesus and Marcelo not looking out of form.

However, the fact that they have not conceded again since the only goal against Switzerland in their opening match is something Belgium will have to think a lot about.

England have been thinking so much that they now have a good chance of another World Cup win since 1966, with the tournament draw being good to them.

They do not to have to face the likes of France, Uruguay, Brazil or Belgium until July 15, and they feel Sweden may not be too much headache.

But when they face off on Saturday in Samara, they will have to contend with a side which has shown so much resilience, even in the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

They beat The Netherlands and Italy in qualifying for Russia, made life difficult for Germany and beat South Korea and Mexico in Russia, and eliminated Switzerland in the Round of 16.

Usually a quiet side, Sweden can bring down England if they keep under check Harry Kane and Jesse Lingard, as well as likely substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jamie Vardy.

The good thing for the Swedes is that, in spite of Kane’s leading goalscorer status, England do not have what they do not have, and this makes the game balanced.

Russia have not disappointed so far, and it is a good preview for them as they head to Fisht Stadium in Sochi to host Croatia on Saturday.

It is a likely quiet and not-extraordinary game, with Russia being the lowest FIFA-ranked team at the tournament.

While Russian hopes have risen since the penalty kicks shootout defeat of Spain, it may just serve the hosts well not to count their chickens b efore they are hatched.

Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic have provided the needed midfield inspiration, while Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Perisic have spearheaded offensive runs which have produced not goals but team game stability.

The Croats are aware of their capability and Modric, while speaking at their pre-match press conference on Wednesday, said team compatibility is a weapon they would use to great effect.

“We know it is going to be tough against Russia, especially as they are the hosts, but we know ourselves and what we can do. We will do it as expected,’’ he said.

However, will they be able to reenact the performance that led them to the 1998 semi-finals in France, having to play against a team and its expectant nation of 144 million?

It is however Russia’s best World Cup run since the 1966 semi-finals appearance, and they will want to go further than this quarter-finals stage not just because they are the hosts.

They have shown good strength of character with the way they overcame Spain, and swung their compatriots who never believed in them before behind them.

While they can shock the Croats, and which can happen, it may just be one other shock in a tournament that is still capable of bringing up more shocks.

  • Ogu: I can’t wait to face La Albiceleste

Ogu: I can’t wait to face La Albiceleste

Super Eagles midfielder, John Ogu has declared his readiness to face Argentina in the upcoming friendly on November 14 in Krasnodar, Russia.

The Hapoel Be’er Sheva star, who was voted the Best Foreign Player in the Israeli league two seasons ago has started the current campaign in blistering form and happy with the prospect of playing against the likes of Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain, Angel di Maria and Pablo Dybala.

La Albiceleste are familiar foes, having faced Nigeria at different levels on the international stage – most recently at the 2014 FIFA World Cup where the Eagles narrowly lost 3-2.

Speaking to The Nation, Ogu revealed: “I’m looking forward to such a Grade A game against Argentina. I can’t wait.”

The friendly game will come up three day after Nigeria’s final 2018 World Cup qualifier against Algeria.

The Super Eagles have already booked their place in Russia as they currently lead Group B with 13 points, while Zambia, Cameroon and Algeria have 7, 6 and 1 points respectively.

  • Higuain nets 100th goal as Juve go tops

Higuain nets 100th goal as Juve go tops

Gonzalo Higuain scored his 100th Serie A goal as Juventus claimed a 2-0 win at San Siro to move joint-top with Napoli and ramp up the pressure on AC Milan boss Vincenzo Montella.

The Argentine striker found the back of the net once in each half to take his league tally to 101 and consign Milan to a fourth consecutive home game in all competitions without a victory.

If a miserable run at San Siro does not do for head coach Montella, it may be the Rossoneri’s poor record against top-six sides this season that costs him his job – Juve followed Lazio, Roma and Inter in making light work of big-spending Milan.

While this was not a particularly poor Milan performance, they were listless in attack and their forwards’ failings were only emphasised by the presence of Higuain in the opposing ranks.

The 29-year-old thrashed a ruthless effort into the net after 23 minutes and then doubled his tally shortly after the hour-mark with a similarly devastating strike, suggesting he is returning to his prolific best after a difficult start to the campaign.

Milan could slip into the bottom half this weekend as a result, while reigning champions Juve moved level at the summit with Napoli, who host Sassuolo on Sunday.

Clearly aware of the enormity of the fixture and their desperate need for a result, Milan started at a great pace at a baying San Siro.

Gianluigi Buffon punched an early Ricardo Rodriguez free-kick away from his near post and Nikola Kalinic should have turned a shot on target amid a chaotic goalmouth scramble.

But as the blood and thunder of the opening 10 minutes faded, Juve gained a foothold and the dangerous Paulo Dybala tested Gianluigi Donnarumma from range before Higuain broke the deadlock.

Juve assumed complete control throughout the closing stages, with Higuain and Dybala continuing to combine but sparing Milan the humiliation of a third as Montella’s men crumbled again.

Champions League: Barca won’t be cheap -Higuain

Juventus star Gonzalo Higuain believes Barcelona had a “bad day” in their Champions League capitulation in Paris and insists there will be no repeat.

The Serie A champions face Barca in the quarter-finals after the LaLiga giants scraped through their last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain.

Barca  were crushed 4-0 in the first leg in Paris before advancing with an incredible 6-1 victory at home.

But Higuain knows a repeat of such a performance by Barcelona is unlikely, warning his team to prepare for the best Luis Enrique’s men can offer.

“Barcelona had a bad day in Paris but I doubt they’ll have another,” he told UEFA.

“Football can change very quickly and a team that looked like they were eliminated are now in the quarter-finals.”

Higuain is enjoying a fine first season at Juve, having scored 23 goals in all competitions since his move from Napoli.

The 29-year-old Argentina international is hoping the time has come for Juve to win a first Champions League since 1996.

“I hope it’s the right year to win the Champions League, that’s why I came here,” Higuain said.

“We also fight for the sixth consecutive league title and Coppa Italia.”

Messi wins UEFA goal of the season

Barcelona Lionel Messi has won UEFA’s 2015-16 Goal of the Season prize for strike in Champions League vs. Roma in November

Leo beats off competition from the likes of Marek Hamsik, Gonzalo Higuain and Saul Niguez to win the UEFA goal of the season.

The goal came in group stage last season when he finished off an excellent team move which the fans themselves voted for him as the best goal of the season.
