  • Vote for me, Buhari to ensure good governance in Ogun, says Abiodun

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State,  Prince Dapo Abiodun, yesterday urged residents to vote for him and re-elect President Muhammadu Buhari, to ensure good governance.

He said a vote for APC at the state and national levels  would enhance the presence of Federal Government projects.

Abiodun said an APC governor and president would enhance even spread of development across the state.

The  governorship candidate spoke at the palace of the monarch of Isheri-Olofin Oba Nurudeen Adebowale, in Ifo Local Government during his ward-to-ward campaign tour of Ifo 2 State Constituency.

Abiodun, who was accompanied by his running mate, Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Sen. Gbenga Obadara, Abiodun Akinlade, Director-General (DG), Dapo Abiodun Campaign Organisation, Chief Segun Adesegun,  Ganiyu Hamzat, among  others, said the people cannot afford to lose the governorship seat to another party.

He enjoined them to vote for him and re-elect President Buhari, to attract Federal Government projects to the state.

Abiodun said: “APC is our party. I am the Ogun State governorship candidate of the APC. The Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, is our son and he is from Ogun State, while President Muhammadu Buhari is our presidential candidate.

“I am urging you to cast your votes for all the APC candidates.

Kabiyesi, I want you to help us spread the good news about our party to all your subjects so that they can vote for us in the coming general election.

“On the problems facing you in the community, I want to assure you that we have not only come here to seek  your prayers, but also to afford us the opportunity to know the problems you are facing here. We will go round and see what the problems are.

“We are ready to make amends.

“There is a problem of bad roads in your community. We are going to rehabilitate them when we get into office. We won’t forget that we have made promises.

“We can’t have a community as big as this, with a large population, yet, you don’t have a public secondary school and a public health care centre.”

Oba  Adebowale had decried the deplorable roads linking the community with other parts  of state, insecurity, absence of a public hospital and a public secondary school.

He advised Abiodun to address them if elected.

Oba Adebowale noted that Isheri-Olofin was the cradle of Awori people and the first stool in Aworiland, whether in Lagos or Ogun state, lamenting the ill treatments meted out to the sons and daughters of the community.

He said it was sad that nobody from the community was in the Governor Ibikunle Amosun administration.

The monarch appealed to Abiodun to look into that area and address the anomaly, if he emerged as the next governor.

  • Oshiomhole, Tinubu eulogise Ekere, assure Akwa Ibom of good governance

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, have assured the people of Akwa Ibom State of better days ahead when the party’s gubernatorial candidate in Akwa Ibom State, Obong Nsima Ekere, becomes Governor in 2019.

Both APC leaders spoke at the weekend during the presidential campaign flag-off for the South-South Zone in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Tinubu, who spoke first, recalled the performance records of the Victor Attah and Godswill Akpabio governments in Akwa Ibom State and assured the people that Ekere would bring back development to the state.

His words: “Unlike PDP government there now, they keep complaining. They keep drawing us back. Attah came in, performed creditably well. Akpabio came in, you saw development, progress of this state. Ever since, happiness has frozen. We are waiting for Nsima Ekere to take over and bring development and happiness to this state. By the Grace of God Almighty, we are going to get victory.”

  • Group hails Fayemi for restoring good governance to Ekiti

A political campaign body, Just Keep Following Group (JKFG), has lauded Governor Kayode Fayemi for restoring good governance to Ekiti State.

The group said the various policies executed by Fayemi so far have  brought  relief, better life and quality standard of living to Ekiti people saying “they have not made any mistake by voting Fayemi to power.”

JKFG was in the forefront to return Fayemi to office and was the first group to commence an open campaign for the governor by pasting his posters around the state in December 2017.

The State Coordinator for JKFG, Comrade Bisi Dada, said  Fayemi’s return  to power has set Ekiti people free from ‘slavery’ of four years under former Governor Ayo Fayose.

Dada  said the Fayemi administration has ended the era of impunity, mediocrity, truth subversion, deception, vulgarism and bad governance allegedly unleashed on Ekiti people by the Fayose regime.

He commended the Deputy Governor, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi; First Lady, Erelu Bisi Fayemi; Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji; Chief of Staff, Mr. Biodun Omoleye and other government officials for their input in translating Fayemi vision to reality in the state.

Dada said: “We appreciate Ekiti people for believing in us during the struggle and campaign to vote for APC especially Dr John Kayode Fayemi. Thanks for keeping faith.

“The new dawn is here, our education sector is receiving adequate attention as Ekiti government has given executive order for free education in all primary and secondary schools, payment of WAEC fee, housing and car loan to teachers, payment for the teaching of core subjects allowance and abolition of underage taxation.

“The Fayemi administration has made workers welfare its priority. Salaries are  now paid as at when due to wor kers and pensioners across board.

“The outstanding salaries owed by the past PDP administration are also being addressed as workers will get two months’ salary this December. “

  • Atiku/Obi group canvasses good governance

The Director-General, Atiku/Obi Vanguard for Good Governance, Tunji Iyanda, has said good governance is the panacea to all the problems confronting the country.

Iyanda, who spoke in Lagos, said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and the Vice-Presidential candidate Peter Obi would lead the country on the path of socio-political and economic reforms.

Iyanda said Nigerians were no longer comfortable with all the social ills in the country, stressing that the Southwest would be returned to its lofty height, when agriculture played a pivotal role in development.

According to him, the progress recorded was due to good governance, stressing that Atiku has the capacity to right the wrongs in the society.

Iyanda added that the group was intended to enlighten Nigerians on the need to embrace constructive and collaborative design to save the country.

He said: “Nigerians are really complaining of the harsh economic downturn. They are not comfortable with the security situation and we equally need to find out whether our military are well positioned to fight Boko Haram.

“The country has been fighting corruption, but is there less corruption ever since? What is the situation of infrastructure in the country and how has the country made progress when it comes to the rule of law?”

He said these are the issues that would determine the election campaign in the coming days, noting that the group’s foot soldiers and canvassers would not relent until Nigerians were educated on why they should vote wisely.

He urged the chairman; Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to ensure the electorate and other stakeholders complied with electoral guidelines.

“The call became necessary because the commission’s integrity had come under scrutiny in recent times. There have been cases of inconclusive elections which Nigerians are no longer comfortable with.

“On our own part, our campaigns will be issue-based and we will ensure that we follow the laid down rules and regulations stipulated by the electoral act. We expect that other contestants should do the same,” he said.

  • Good governance possible in Nigeria — Ezekwesili

Prof. Obiageli Ezekwesili, the Presidential Candidate on the platform of Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), on Tuesday said that good governance was possible in Nigeria if youths would be the agents of change.

Ezekwesili, a guest at the 2018 The Future Awards Africa (TFAA) in Lagos on Monday, told the News Agency of Nigeria that youths should stand up to be counted among those that would change the country.

“They need to know that they are the future of this country. The youth need to look out for the candidates who are the true symbol of change.

“I want youths to stand up and be counted among their contemporaries all over the world. We can only achieve this through good governance.

“A country that is governed well will not concern itself with the past and I am resolute that good governance is possible in Nigeria, I am certain about it.

“The youth can achieve their dreams through creativity, resilience and productivity with right attitude and associating themselves with the right group,’’ she said.

Ezekwesili advised youths to inculcate the right character and shun all things that might jeopardize national interest and development.

“Youths should exemplify good characters and not just acting like. They should make well-informed choices that can help them grow and also in the national interest and development.

“If the youth understand what quality leadership is all about, they will not continue with the recycling pattern they are into now which is poor choices of political leaders.

“Every young one come 2019, should decide because they now have their choices to make without anybody forcing them to choose.

“It is in their own interest to ensure that governance system in Nigeria is right; they need to dream what they want their future to be,’’ she said.

  • Group advocates for good governance

A Lagos based non-governmental organisation, Greater and Better Nigeria Development Initiative (GABNDI) has canvassed for good governance in Nigeria. The president of the group, Bonus Omenma, said the group will throw its weight behind any candidate (s) who will convince Nigerians beyond reasonable doubt of their commitments to bring out the country out of woods.

He urged Nigerians to get their Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs, ready and vote for the candidates of their choice in 2019; adding that government should endeavour to conduct free, fair, credible and transparent elections where the votes cast by Nigerians would be counted.”One of the reasons why we voted president Buhari is because he promised to fight corruption, unemployment and insecurity.

Re-echoing the same sentiment the vice president of the group, Barr. Theophilus Akanwa, said GABNDI believe in oneness and greatness of Nigeria. He said Nigeria has what it takes, in terms of capital and human resources to make Nigeria a great country like those in developed world. Akanwa believe that Nigeria can get it right if the citizens are ready to support and vote for the right people to the right political positions across the country.

He said GABNDI being an Igbo tribe initiative will not join forces with some people who are kicking against the nomination of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi as a running mate to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar who is flying the ticket of People’s Democratic Party, PDP in 2019 presidential election. “Some of them are jealous that Atiku is going for the best,” he submitted.

  • Presidential candidate pledges good governance

Founder and leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress Party (NDCP), Dr Johnson Edosomwan, has pledged to introduce good governance to the nation, if voted into the country’s number one position, come 2019 general elections.

Edosomwan, who spoke to newsmen in Lagos after his brief meeting with some members of his party, said that Nigeria is overwhelmingly blessed with resources that “are so abundant and can go round each and everybody in the country.”

Edosomwan, who said that he is on a rescue mission to the country from his erstwhile abode in the United State of America where he is well known for his developmental strategy and contributions to the world at large, said he will duplicate all that he is well known for in the international community here in Nigeria.

He recalled a book he recently launched wherein he said he has spelt out all the ways in which he will work to bring about good governance in the nation.

“I have published a book here in Nigeria: Progress begins with me. The book provides a framework for transportation of the entire system from point A to Z.

“The book basically contains the elements, which are our road map for progress. I call on all Nigerians both home and abroad to join our transformation team. Together we will succeed.

“In the book, I’ve called on all Nigerians, both at home and abroad, to unify and transform Nigeria into a world class democratic nation where every citizen contributes and lives peacefully in safe and secure communities free from corruption, poverty, violence, regionalism, and tribalism, and a modern nation that provides access to jobs, clean water, clean air, electricity, infrastructure, education and health care.

“My vision will transform Nigeria into a forward looking nation whose multidimensional and robust economy eagerly embraces the advancing technological age.”

  • Columnists rally to promote good governance

The League of Nigerian Columnists (LNC) has been unveiled in Lagos. At its birth, the group revisited the reading culture and the media’s role in reconstructing Nigeria by checking bad governance, reports EVELYN OSAGIE.

The value of a columnist to an editor or newspaper cannot be understated,” began “The Oracle”, Akogun Tola Adeniyi. “Controversy moves newsprint like no other. This challenging wordsmith gets away with expressing opinions the editor daren’t utter; it is the columnist, not the newspaper that attracts the flak.

“The column is a space accounted for and so is someone else’s problem. Most important of all, there is neither news nor sport feature that can draw and keep as many readers as can the columnist.” Welcome to the world of the “Columnist” as an “agenda-setter” and “change agent”.

    A league is born

The occasion was no media symposium, but the unveiling of the League of Nigerian Columnists (LNC) held in Lagos, where Adeniyi, the league’s National President, stressed the importance of the columnist to media and the nation at large, especially in checking bad governance and corrupt practices.

The event brought together leading columnists from across the country. The league’s foundational members at the event were Mr Yakubu Mohammed (the National Vice President); Ray Ekpu (the chairman  of the league’s editorial board); Henry Boyo; Ben Lawrence; Dele Sobowale; Dan Agbese; Director for the Centre for International Advanced and Professional Studies (CIASP), Prof Anthony Kila (LNC National Secretary),Chief Jimanze Ego-Alowes;  Editorial Board Chairman of The Nation, Sam Omatseye; Dare Babarinsa; former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr Reuben Abati (Vice Chair, LNC editorial board);  Martins Oloja;  Director of Media and Public Communications, Coalition for Nigeria Movement, Akin Osuntokun; Ikechukwu Amaechi; Managing Director of ARISE News Channel Africa, Ijeoma Nwogwugwu and Gabriel Akinadewo.

    The columnist as nation’s conscience

Like men and women on a mission, the group said it was set to serve the public good, as its members have been doing in their individual columns and shall do as collectives.

And so at critical and crucial moments in the nation’s history, the league is out to make history as it serves Nigerians by checking bad governance and more, it said.

“It is our strongly held view that the Nigerian columnists that have made their mark must come together and carve a respectable identity for themselves and jealously protect that identity to ward off quacks and pretenders,” Adeniyi, said.

According to him, the league would “continue to drum to the ears of leaders that their powers are held in trust for the people to whom we are mandatorily responsible”.

He said: “Our objectives include, among other things, to contribute to the attainment of the goal of holding governments accountable to the people as enshrined in the Constitution and provide coordinated intervention on important national issues through press releases and or press conferences or policy intervention as the need may arise.

“It would be  recalled that because of the array of columnists assembled by the great Babatunde Jose of the old Daily Times in the late 60s and 70s, the then Head of State General Yakubu Gowon made it a duty to call Dr Jose on daily basis!”

And although some may write columnists off as “people who scribble on the backs of advertisements, Adeniyi insisted that there are very few that carry as “much influence as the challenging publish–and-be-damned columnist.”

    Change agent

While charging the league to be a voice for change and for the voiceless majority, the Chairman of the Police Equipment Trust Fund (PETF), Chief Kenny Martins, described the establishment of the league as timely. “Disseminate, influence, educate people and take a positive stand on national and global issues until Nigeria becomes the Nigeria of our dream,” he urged.

On his part, Babarinsa said the onus of reconstructing Nigeria does not lie with the columnists alone. According to him, the requirements of having a proper democracy is not just about what Nigerians expects of the league, but having a reading mass and a participatory democracy.

While recalling the reading culture of the days of the seasoned columnist, Chief Joseph Kaka, he argued that to reclaim Nigeria from the claws of bad governance and corruption, its citizenry must also recover its appetite for reading. “If we don’t recover our appetite for reading, then we may lose our country. And you lose your country when you don’t have a say in it and the columnists have done a lot over the years, but you must participate by buying and reading newspaper.

“The people should participate in the thinking process of taking decision. They should participate in the consciousness of holding the leaders accountable. In the old days, employers/organisation buy at least one newspaper per day for staff, and people bought and read the papers. But, today, all those things are gone and the circulation of newspaper has dropped. The destiny of our country is in our hands, we must work for it,” Babarinsa said.

For veteran journalist, Lawrence, the reason the country is where it is because it had not been sufficiently covered by the media. He called on the media to step up its game as watchdog and maintain the highest professional standard as of old.

He said: “I remember we reported the war very well that the soldiers couldn’t do anything to us because we were professionals. There is a decline in professional reporting; that is why the country is suffering. People stealing and loading dollars into vehicles, burying them in houses and in the ground, and the press didn’t see it? We would have known in those days. Many people would know. What has happened… were you participating with them?”

The columnist as the news breaker

Reiterating Babarinsa and Lawrence’s words, Oloja charged columnists to go beyond opinion writing to breaking stories just like any seasoned reporter would, while urging the media to use as quotes some of the informed writings of columnists in their articles and reports. “When they are reporting CNN and other digital platforms, great reporters quote extensively from great columns to illustrate their stories. This is because columnists can break stories. Reporters should read stories by great columnists,” he said.

The columnist abreast with the times

While observing that contemporary knowledge, and most of the readership are now on the Internet, Omatseye urged the league to take advantage of the vast influence the virtual world weighs in today’s world by creating an online presence for members in its bid to reconstruct Nigeria.

As part of its response to the times, the league is also set to give members online presence even as it moves to reconstruct Nigeria through constructive articles, according to Kila. He stated that articles by members of the league published in the papers on different days would be on the websites, adding that a spot has been allotted in the website to celebrate late columnists who have made their marks. These are among other online initiatives, the league would be unfolding as time goes on. “We would be publishing an official newsletter, a book of Best Columns, an encyclopaedia of Nigerian columnists living or dead, any other book, magazine or pamphlet as the League thinks fit; hold yearly lectures, workshops, seminars and colloquiums to enhance the practice of column writing, and promote and sustain a high standard in the practice of column writing, and so on,” Kila said.

Taiwo Adenekan of Canada University Press praised the efforts of columnists over the years in serving as watchdog and voices for the voiceless in Nigeria. He called for government recognition for their efforts and posthumous recognition for those who have passed on. Hence, a one-minute silence was held in their honour at the event.

  • USAID increases support for good governance, health

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced more development assistance to support achieving the development goals outlined in the bilateral Development Objectives Assistance Agreement between the U.S. and Nigerian governments signed in 2015.

Of the new funding, $25 million will strengthen good governance by supporting state governments’ efforts to bolster Nigeria’s Open Government Partnership commitments to improve transparency and fight corruption.  An additional $1.5 million will support a healthier, and more educated population in targeted states through the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), totalled at $26.5 million.

USAID is also partnering federal and state health ministries to build stronger health systems with the aim of guaranteeing equitable access to quality healthcare services nationwide.  The additional new funding brings the total U.S. government assistance provided under the five-year Development Objectives agreement to $1.1 billion.

“The United States believes that as the most populous country in Africa, with the largest economy on the continent, Nigeria holds tremendous influence over the future of Africa,” Acting Mission Director Erin Holleran said, adding: “USAID is committed to partnering with the government and the people of Nigeria to address its development challenges.”

USAID collaborated with the ministries of Budget and National Planning, Health, Agriculture, Power, and Education, as well as state-level government counterparts to structure the bilateral assistance agreement, which runs through 2020.

  • APC elders to Fayemi: give Ekiti people good governance

    •Afenifere greets governor-elect
    •Election observer group okays victory
•Ekiti in Diaspora urges Fayemi to unite state

The Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders’ Forum has urged Governor-elect Kayode Fayemi to use the mandate given to him at the poll to improve the lives of the people.

The party elders said Fayemi’s second chance at the helm offers him a wonderful opportunity to restore Ekiti to the path of good governance and make a difference in the life of the people.

In a statement by its Chairman, Chief George Akosile, and Secretary, Chief Abiodun Ajayi, the Ekiti APC Elders’ Forum also hailed INEC for conducting a free, fair and credible election.

The forum praised the doggedness and determination of Fayemi and the deputy governor-elect, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi, to succeed at the poll.

It also expressed its gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari, APC National Chairman, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole; National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; former Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande; governors, ministers and other party stalwarts for their contributions to the victory.

Also, the National Leader of Afenifere, Senator Ayo Fasanmi, has congratulated Fayemi on his election victory.

Fasanmi, in a joint statement with the Ekiti State Chairman of the Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural body, Elder Yemi Alade, issued by the Publicity Secretary, Chief Biodun Akin-Fasae, urged the governor-elect not to disappoint the electorate who elected him.

He said: “Now that the people have decided which way to go, Ekiti should never allow themselves to be manipulated by deceit and from those whose backgrounds we cannot vouch for.”

A local election observer group, Democracy Vanguard, has said last Saturday’s Ekiti State governorship election was a better improvement over the previous ones conducted in the Fountain of Knowledge state.

It congratulated the governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the residents for ensuring a violence-free poll.

In a statement yesterday by its State Coordinator, Yetunde Adeoluwa, the organisation hailed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting a free, fair, credible and conclusive election with an improvement over previous ones.

Adeoluwa said: “The peaceful conduct of the INEC and security agencies during the July 14 governorship election shows that our democratic process is improving.

“There was no record of ballot-snatching, rigging, violence or electoral malpractice, as it was experienced in 2007, while there was no security clampdown, compared to 2014. This is highly commendable.”

Also, Ekiti indigenes in the United States of America (U.S.A) have congratulated the governor-elect, Dr Fayemi, on his victory in last Saturday’s election.

Acting under the aegis of Ekiti Coalition for Change, the group urged the governor-elect to align with this biblical command and be fair to all Ekiti indigenes, regardless of their political leanings and beliefs.

In a statement in Washington DC by its Coordinator, Mr Samuel Ayodele, the Ekiti indigenes saluted the INEC for conducting the election in a manner that aligned with global best practices.
