  • NAFDAC re-arraigns producer of fake wines, spirits

    The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), on Wednesday, re-arraigned a businessman, Benjamin Ojukwu, before a Federal High Court, Lagos, over alleged production of fake wines and gins.

    The defendant, whose store is said to be situated in Mushin, Lagos, was according to NAFDAC, arrested on April 3, 2018.

    In the six count charge marked FHC/L/111c/18, the defendant is accused of unlawful production of the fake wines, warehousing, distribution and unlawful possession of the same products

    “He was first arraigned before Justice Hadiza Shagari, on June 6, 2018, and was admitted to bail in the sum of N2 million with sureties in like sum.

    He was, however, re-arraigned on Wednesday, before a new judge, Justice I. N. Oweibo, following the transfer of Shagari.

    The charge was then read to the defendant after the prosecutor, Mr Nnamdi Obi had informed the court of the position.

    The defendant also pleaded not guilty to the charges and the new judge allowed him to continue with the earlier bail granted.

    The court adjourned the case until May 9, for the commencement of trial.

    According to the charge, some of the fake wines and spirits retrieved from the defendant’s stores include: Ciroc Vodka, Gordon’s, Sky Vodka, Best Whisky, Grap Atros, Gin Mc Dry Gin, Best Dry Gin (Sachets), Grant’s, 8Pm Whisky, amongst others.

    The offences contravene the provisions of Sections 1(a) of the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Proceed Foods (miscellaneous provision) Act Cap. C34 Laws of the Federation, 2004.

    Speaking on the progress made so far, Daniel Opuene, president, ‘Beauty of Africa’ international pageant said: “It is with joy that we look forward to the 11th edition of beauty of Africa pageant whicvh hods on Saturday, October 7 at Muson Centre, Onikan Lagos.

    “It promises to be an exciting evening. In 11 years of its existence, it has produced celebrities like Nollywood actress, Christabel Amaka Goddy, world renowned model, Sandra Ogbebor, Marian Makbere and Victoria Mafo, who made it to the top 10 at Miss Universe last year. Good content, security, entertainment and a memorable time with top society personalities.”

    Speaking further, Opuene revealed that the ‘Beauty of Africa International Pageant’ has been given the license to Crown the Miss Tourism International Nigeria.

    Commenting on what the last 11 years have been like, he said that the pageant, which was formerly known as Face of Daniels International (FODI), was held for seven years in Port Harcourt, and once in Abuja (2015).

    “Over the years the pageant has discovered and promoted winners to represent Nigeria in World Beauty contests such as Miss Tourism International World finals, Miss Globe World finals, and Miss Tourism Metropolitan World finals, Miss Tourism Queen of the Year World Finals and Miss Supranational World finals, which are currently enjoying corporate endorsements within and outside the continent,” he said.

    He also stated that the winner goes home with a car, wardrobe allowance and a trip to Miss Tourism International World finals.

    On hand to entertain guests will be top comedians, AY, Gordons and Helen Paul while music will be supplied by Sound Sultan and Monibanks.

    2face leads Banky W, Gordons to home state for Xmas

    Makurdi, the capital of Benue State will come alive today with an early Christmas bash, as son-of-the-soil artiste, 2face Idibia will be staging a home-coming show, accompanied by other top artistes such as D’banj, Banky W and comedian Gordons.

    Sponsored by Rt. Hon Terhemen Tarzoor, a governorship aspirant in the state, the show which is tagged Live in Benue, is expected to serenade thousands of youths at the popular IBB Square, Makurdi.

    The show will be organised by foremost event company, Dream Pointers International Ltd.

    It is one of the several home visits for 2face and Gordons who have quite a huge following in the state. Banky W too, who recently returned from a film school abroad, has done quite a number of shows in the state; but for Dbanj, going to Benue has been far-in-between.

    “This is going to be a visit that is unique at this time of the year. I have not been to Benue that often, as a matter of fact, it’s been a while that I have been there, My Benue fans should expect a different kind of Christmas,” D’banj said.

    For 2face, fans should just expect a classic outing. “Benue is home, I will make the people feel at home. We are going to be live at IBB center to make the Christmas a unique one,” he said.

    According to the convener, “This is an opportunity to spend Christmas with the youths like I always do, always finding myself among the youths. I am offering myself to serve the people of Benue, it’s not a do-or-die affair, but I know the people will give me this opportunity and I will never fail them.”

    POPULAR stand-up comedians, Gordons and Sammy Okposo, were a great delight recently at the 2014 Children and Youth Harvest Thanksgiving and Bazaar tagged “Harvest of Praise” held at St. Francis Catholic Church, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos.

    The two comic mongers, who anchored the memorable event, held the guests spellbound, as they added flavour to the church programme with songs, dance and comedy.

    In an interview with The Nation, Gordons said he honoured the invitation to contribute to the celebration of God’s praise, while ensuring the seamless flow of the event. “Also, as a comedian, I should be able to say one or two jokes to spice up the event,” he added.

    Also, Ambassador Paul Chukwuemeka Njoku, who chaired the occasion, said he invited the comedians to make a cogent statement: “Today is a tremendous day. Everyone has come together, irrespective of their churches, religions or ethnic groups. We have all come here to praise Jesus Christ, not in the name of the church. We are cutting off the mentality, where we speak about religion and church, instead of Christianity and Jesus. We will not take the name of Church to heaven, but the name of Jesus. We are taking away those things that have been causing barrier. That was why we invited everyone, including the Muslims.”

    The Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Ogbodo, who also spoke with The Nation, said the event was special because everything they declared at the beginning of the year had come true.

    He also enjoined the children and youths to start equipping themselves to be good leaders in the church as well as in the society.

    IT was a fusion of drama, music and dance as popular Nigerian entertainers, including Phyno, Sound Sultan, Gordons and a host of others, excited the large crowd inside the Golden Royale Hall in Enugu recently with electrifying performances.

    The stars featured in Amstel Malta Showtime concert drama tagged The Rush. Directed by Ice Nweke, the event was a fusion of various artistic displays by ballerinas, jugglers, singers, actors, dancers, fire eaters, instrumentalists and comedians. It was put together to tell the story of a young man’s journey to success in an exceptional theatrical piece.

    Also, five young talents (a harmonica player, a dancer, a singer/voice-over artiste, a guitarist and a drama group of six) who were all selected via auditions performed with the stars at the event.

    Popular indigenous rapper, Phyno, said: “The young talents who featured in the drama also put in their best within a very short rehearsal. Really, everyone should try his or her best to make it to the Lagos show,” he said.

    Amstel Malta Brand Manager, Hannatu Ageni-Yusuf, also expressed Amstel Malta’s commitment to encouraging the young talents as much as possible.

    The final leg of the event series will hold on September 18, at the University of Lagos Sports Centre, while the auditions will hold on September 14 and 15, at the University’s main auditorium to select the five talents who will star alongside Sound Sultan, Phyno, Gordons, Ice Nweke and others.

    Artistes storm Uyo for Invasion L.O.L

    NOT minding the downpour, residents of Uyo in Akwa Ibom State, last Sunday, converged on Amazing Grace Plaza, venue of Glo Laffta Fest, to catch a bit of excitement in the form of comedy, music and dance.

    Tagged Invasion L.O.L., the event paraded 12 Nigerian comedians, three music stars, East African comedian and an up- and- coming artiste, Vnissi, with the juke box tendered by the Nigeria’s most decorated female DJ, Dj Nana.

    Joke merchant, Basketmouth, led a cast of equally talented and influential comedians. In his opening salvo, Basketmouth shocked and awed the audience with how he would instruct M.I.C to conduct his burial after a glorious life, rocking his “caski” to hip-hop music with bouncing dance steps.

    Comedians who performed at the event included 2CanTalk, SIM Card, Seyi Law, Buchi, Gandoki, Okon Lagos, Okey Bakassi, Gordons, Akpororo and Bovi, among others.

    Akwa Ibom- born Okon Lagos received a standing ovation, as he introduced his new wife to the crowd and laced his jokes with his native Uyo dialect. His funny facial expressions and comical mannerism were as remarkably witty as his jokes.

    The comedy sessions were complemented with music by Burna Boy, MI and Wande Coal, who spiced the evening with top Nigerian songs. All the three acts got the audience dancing and singing along with them.

    Speaking after his performance, Mr. Incredible said, “It was one of my best shows ever. This platform, I mean the Glo Laffta Fest, is one that any artiste that is worth his or her calling as a musician will want to be. I am happy to be part of this great show and am more grateful to Globacom for bringing me closer to my numerous fans here in Uyo.”

    A-LIST comedians Gordons and Akpororo lead a list of high profile entertainers that are set to storm the ancient city of Otta to thrill fun-lovers during this year’s independence ceremony.

    The event tagged Otta grooves Naija at 53 is organised by Grooves Event and Pilot One Entertainment, a leading event packaging outfit operating in Otta and beyond.

    According to Mr.Uche Okeke, the owner and patron of Groove Events and Pilot One entertainment, the reason for the event is to attract tourism to the city as most residents of Otta head for the Island and Mainland of Lagos to loosen up and have fun whenever there is a public holiday.     The event which is billed to be a two-day event will have The Nigerian Navy Music Dance Band, renowned Nigerian hip-hop artistes, comedians and dancers on parade during the Otta Grooves Naija show on the 29th of September, 2013. The second day will be the turn of the children to have fun in an event tagged ‘Children’s Funtime’ which will have youths in and around the environs of Otta in attendance.
