GOtv out with new comedy drama series

In a bid to bring more entertainment to its subscribers, GOtv has announced new drama series on its bouquet.

On Zee World, Channel 25, Love… Look What You Made Me Do! starts on Sunday, May 15 at 6pm while If Only I Was You premieres on Monday, May 23 at 3:30pm and Sony Max begins Impractical Jokers, an American hidden camera-practical joke reality series filmed in New York, on May 11 at 8pm. On Disney Junior, PJ Masks, a cartoon series with three super heroes, starts airing from May 16, by 6pm.

Love… Look What You Made Me Do! narrates the essence of love as an intriguing and strange feeling that when cupid strikes, it brings with it the feeling of happiness, pain, envy, greed, lust and sin.

If Only I Was You is a romantic story where destiny leads twin brothers, separated at birth, to embark upon separate paths only to reunite them years later. But a twist of fate will have the brothers exchange their identities, leaving them to face challenging, yet oftentimes comical situations.

Impractical Jokers follows Joe Gatto, James Murray, Brian Quinn and Sal Vulcano as they coerce one another into doing public pranks while being filmed by hidden cameras. The show differs from other prank television programs in that the stars of Impractical Jokers do not know the details of the prank until the moment they are performing it on strangers. While one cast-member performs the prank, the other three comedians in the troupe are behind the scenes feeding lines to their friend via a microphone (with an earpiece).

PJ Masks features three super heroes, Catboy, Gekko and Owlette who are three normal friends by day, but once the sun goes down out comes, The PJ Masks! This new gang of super heroes in their pyjamas takes kids on their night time adventures as they solve mysteries, work together and learn valuable lessons here on Disney Junior.

  • GOtv: Blazing a trail with launch of audio channels

GOtv: Blazing a trail with launch of audio channels

The liberalisation of broadcasting in Nigeria in the 1990s abolished the monopoly of public service broadcasters and led to the emergence and swift growth of privately-owned radio and television services. In the same period, Nigeria’s telecommunications industry was liberalised and by 2001, the global system for mobile communications (GSM) was introduced. The entrance of GSM was marked by innovation resulting in early adoption by millions of individuals and businesses.

In no time, businesses could customise their numbers and this kicked off the era of talk radio.

Talk radio gained popularity rapidly. From news analyses to sports and general interest shows, listeners do not only tune in, they phone in to air their opinions on topical issues.

Although the rise of new technology was predicted to spell the end of traditional media, the popularity of talk radio has boosted radio listenership in the country. Unlike television which is widespread, few Nigerian households have a radio set, with most listening to the radio in their cars, public commuter vehicles or mobile phones. Rapid urbanisation has ensured that most Nigerian cities are now yoked with traffic congestion, a state of affairs that has made radio a great companion to the average commuter.

The launch of Wazobia FM 95.1, Nigeria’s foremost Pidgin English radio station, was another game changer in radio broadcasting in the country. The widespread use of Pidgin English, Nigeria’s unofficial bridge language, was of great benefit to the station, making it gain wide acceptance and listenership in Lagos. Due to its wide acceptance, Wazobia FM has spread outside Lagos, now also transmitting from Port Harcourt and Abuja.  So, when news broke that Wazobia FM, had launched on GOtv, it was well received because it meant that the channel could reach a wider audience.

Wazobia FM made its debut on GOtv in December 2015 as the first 24-hour audio channel on the digital terrestrial television (DTT). GOtv did not stop there, four months later, in April 2016 Naija FM 102.7 Lagos, another Pidgin English radio station, went live on GOtv.

It is also noteworthy that GOtv is the first and only DTT operator in Nigeria to offer audio channels as of today.

Chris Ubosi, Managing Director of Megalectrics Ltd reinforced this when he said: “We are delighted to partner with MultiChoice Nigeria on the launch of Naija FM 102.7, Lagos on GOtv. The partnership is significant as it creates an additional medium for us to reach our audience.”

Furthermore, Wazobia FM 95.1 and Naija FM 102.7, both Lagos-based now reach Nigerians in the six geo-political zones as GOtv now covers major cities and towns in 25 states.

Access to more TV channels has been continuously emphasised as a key benefit of digital migration, with not many talking of the possibility of carrying radio channels on TV. More so, the ripple effect of a regional radio station having a national reach – as is now the case of Wazobia FM 95.1 and Naija FM 102.7.

GOtv also promised to offer quality content at an affordable price, from offering 27 channels at launch about five years ago, it now offers 49 channels – 47 TV and 2 radio.

John Ugbe, Managing Director, MultiChoice Nigeria, said that no other digital terrestrial television (DTT) operator in Nigeria has shown more commitment and support for local content made in Nigeria for Nigerians than GOtv. Its Africa Magic channels – especially Yoruba – with its local content offering remains a unique selling point. This decision to carry local radio channels on its platform will definitely strengthen its foothold in Nigeria’s DTT space.

  • GOTV BOXING NIGHT 6: Afonja Warrior will see double, brags Ghanaian opponent

Adjei Sowah, the Ghanaian opponent of Abolaji “Afonja Warrior” Rasheed in the forthcoming West African middleweight boxing title duel, has vowed to punch the Nigerian until he starts seeing double in the ring. The encounter, which headlines the sixth edition of GOtv Boxing Night holding on 25 March at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Lagos, is viewed by Sowah as an opportunity to avenge the loss of  compatriot Alfred “Ahwor” Quaye to Nigeria’s Waidi “Skoro” Usman at the third edition of the GOtv Boxing Night.

Sowah, who spoke from his base in Accra, said: “I’m coming to show the guy who calls himself warrior that he is nothing buy a pussy cat. I will avenge the loss of Quaye to Skoro and show the world that Nigeria still trails Ghana in boxing. He calls himself a warrior, but when he sees war in the ring, he will become a pussy cat. I will punch him until he starts seeing double.”

The Ghanaian claimed to have been watching the fights of his Nigerian opponent and concluded that he is still way below the standards of his previous opponents, whom he defeated.

“Ordinarily, he won’t go beyond three rounds. But I want the fans to enjoy the bout. I will prolong the punishment and punch him sufficiently to make him see double,” he bragged.

In the other title fight, Olaide “Fijaborn” Fijabi will duel with Republic of Benin’s Djamiou Ekekpo for the West African light welterweight title. • GOtv engages subscribers at customer forum

GOtv engages subscribers at customer forum

Subscribers to GOtv, the digital terrestrial pay-TV brand, were recently hosted at a customer forum in Ikotun, Lagos.

The GOtv Customer Forum, a subscriber engagement initiative of MultiChoice Nigeria, provides a platform for subscribers to ask questions regarding GOtv services and receive responses from the management of GOtv operations in Nigeria.

Present at the forum were GOtv subscribers, GOtv dealers, sales agents and representatives of MultiChoice, the subscriber management company of GOtv.

Notable among the topics raised and addressed at the forum, which took place on 6 February, were reconnection after subscription payment, signal loss, hardware swaps and proliferation of MultiChoice branches. Suggestions on how to improve GOtv services were also made.

Speaking at the forum, GOtv Public Relations Manager, Efe Obiomah, thanked the subscribers and everyone present and gave assurances that the issues raised will be addressed.  “We are happy to get feedback from you all. Be assured that all issues raised here will be addressed as we are continuously working to ensure that GOtv remains the trusted digital migration partner in Nigeria,” she said.

On the proliferation of MultiChoice branches, she explained that MultiChoice operates a vast distribution network, but stressed the need for subscribers to adopt the GOtvEazy self-service option because it offers convenience by eliminating the need to visit a physical outlet to renew subscriptions. Subscribers can access the self-service option by logging on to www.eazy.gotvafrica.com to renew subscriptions, clear error codes and update their personal information.

Obiomah also noted that the pay-TV brand took its customer service a step further in December by launching the “GOtv Clinic”, an initiative dedicated to hardware and installation checks, urging subscribers who are experiencing signal loss or service disruption in the Ikotun-Ejigbo environs to visit the GOtv Clinic situated at Ejigbo.

She concluded by saying that GOtv’s channel offering was significantly boosted in 2015 with GOtv Plus now offering 48 channels, listing some of the new channels as; Afro Music Pop, Emmanuel TV, Galaxy TV, TVC News Nigeria, Trybe TV, Wazobia TV and Wazobia FM.
