Daniel not bigger than Ogun State – Gov Abiodun

Governor Dapo Abiodun on Saturday declared Senator Gbenga Daniel (Ogun East) is not bigger than Ogun State.

Abiodun added that Daniel should submit himself unreservedly to the laws of the State, reminding him that he swore twice as a Governor to uphold the same laws.

The Governor stated this in reaction to a  statement by Daniel alleging that he was being persecuted politically by Dapo Abiodun – led State Government, which he noted had served notice to demolish his Asoludero Court private residence, Conference Hotels and its annex – all within the Sagamu GRA of Ogun State.

Responding through Kayode Akinmade, his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Abiodun said he was not after Daniel and dismissed as blatant lies the allegations that notices pasted on his properties amounted to

“malicious and vindictive abuse of power, hiding behind a newly-enacted law retroactively to target a political opponent.”

He urged the Senator to refrain from elevating every issue of his contact with government institutions to a personal vendetta by Governor Abiodun, who obviously holds him in high esteem.

He said: “Nobody is bigger than the State. Senator Gbenga Daniel is distinguished no doubt, but he is not bigger than Ogun State. He should submit himself unreservedly to the same laws he once swore twice to uphold. He should refrain from elevating every issue of his contact with government institutions to a personal vendetta by Governor Abiodun, who obviously holds him in high esteem.

“Since his referenced buildings must have conformed with government regulations, there should not be any problem.

“The distinguished Senator knows the law and has presumably abided by it, so why is he crying foul instead of simply complying with lawful directive, supremely confident in the knowledge that he has done no wrong, and knowing the rights afforded him by the Constitution and the courts?”

The Governor said: “Of course, in what has become a familiar pattern, Senator Daniel and his Media Office have been  ascribing political motives to a routine procedure, suggesting that they have something to hide and do not mind using underhand tactics to achieve their sinister  objectives.

“Contrary to the blatant distortions  of facts and egregious purveyors of falsehood  been propagated by the statement in question, the Ogun State Government is not engaged in any untoward move against Otunba Gbenga Daniel in anyway.

“The fact of the matter, quite simply, is that in his holistic approach to  development efforts across the length and breadth of Ogun State, His Excellency, Governor Dapo Abiodun, has  embarked not only on building new communities as exemplified by the affordable housing estates and the yellow roof revolution but also on the redevelopment of Ogun State’s towns and cities through urban renewal. This, he started with Ibara GRA in Abeokuta, the state capital, and is  being extended to Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode GRAs. This initiative involves the auditing of existing developments within these areas in order to determine the permit status of all types of developments, including houses, schools, hospitals and other commercial buildings. This is a statutory and due process requirement which will provide information for any government intervention. And this informed the development audit exercise currently being carried out simultaneously both in Ijebu-Ode and Sagamu GRAs.

“Otunba Gbenga Daniel’s building happens to be within the Sagamu GRA and among those that were served notices as required under the Town Planning Law and Regulation of Ogun State. Many other structures were also similarly served. The exercise is a continuous one until the objective of government for the exercise is achieved. This  process is not new. It had been in existence and operated even during his tenure as Governor of the State. The GRA is a government designed and allocated estate and it is  subject to regulatory and oversight functions of government in perpetuity. All Otunba Gbenga Daniel needs to do, like every other person’s in  similar situation that have been served with such  notices in that neighbourhood, is to present his planning permit and land title to the relevant government Agency office for verification within the time specified in the notices rather than resorting to cheap blackmail. There are no exemptions under the law except as permitted by that Law.

“Did the distinguished senator not conduct a check around the neighbourhood before hastily rushing to the media to demonise Governor Dapo Abiodun and his administration, as usual? The statement in question jumped the gun by saying that the Government is focusing on Senator Daniel. That is a barefaced lie. It is the duty of the Government to carry out audits and for someone who has been in office as Governor and who is now a Senator to be crying wolf is highly unfortunate. It seems that Senator Gbenga Daniel and his crew will do anything they can to drag the name of Governor Dapo Abiodun into every issue imaginable just to score cheap political points. This is not a hallmark of statesmanship, a topic that the distinguished senator likes to talk about with flourish; it is a dark tactic.

“Nobody is bigger than the State. Since his referenced buildings must have conformed with government regulations, there should not be any problem. The distinguished Senator knows the law and has presumably abided by it, so why is he crying foul instead of simply complying with lawful directive, supremely confident in the knowledge that he has done no wrong, and knowing the rights afforded him by the Constitution and the courts?

“No one should assign impure motives to a routine procedure. If anyone is after Senator Gbenga Daniel, it is certainly not the Governor of Ogun State.”

Gov Abiodun’s indelible legacy: Addressing Ogun’s housing challenges

    Olujonwo Obasanjo

Fundamental to human existence are the basic necessities of food, security, and housing. Among these, shelter stands paramount, as it directly impacts human dignity. The provision of a secure and private living space is essential for individuals and families, offering the comfort and stability necessary for overall well-being and productivity. A reliable shelter serves as a foundation for daily life, enabling individuals to coordinate their activities with confidence and peace of mind.

A secure and stable home environment is the cornerstone of overall security. A safe, clean, and peaceful living space provides the essential backdrop for individuals to thrive and engage in activities that foster food security and overall well-being. The provision of shelter takes precedence over other basic needs, as even access to nutritious food cannot compensate for the lack of a secure and comfortable living situation. In essence, a stable home life is the bedrock of human security.

Show me a man who is unsettled and lacks the right state of mind for productivity and innovation, whose family is in disarray, and it becomes clear that housing is a fundamental pillar of stability and progress.

Housing is so essential globally that the United Nations, in its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), identified shelter in Goal 11.1. The UN calls for access to adequate, safe, and affordable housing and basic services for all by 2030, alongside efforts to upgrade slums.

Reports indicate that as Nigeria faces a housing deficit due to a shortage of affordable homes, millions are being pushed into slums and informal settlements, worsening poverty and inequality. A significant portion of the population lacks basic shelter.

Ogun State, given its proximity to Lagos and Oyo States, faces an immense demand for housing due to continuous migration and economic expansion. The state’s population in 2024 is projected at 8.2 million, growing from 6,379,500 in 2022, further intensifying the need for additional housing solutions. The state is grappling with a staggering housing deficit of approximately 500,000 units. To tackle the housing deficit, Governor Abiodun’s administration plans to build approximately 10,000 affordable housing units before his tenure ends. This ambitious initiative is part of the state’s efforts to address the housing shortage and provide decent living conditions for its citizens.

To show the governor’s determination in tackling this challenge, the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration has proactively initiated housing projects through the Ogun State Housing Corporation, Ministry of Housing, and Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation (OPIC). These projects span the three senatorial districts of the state, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to resolving the housing deficit.

    Housing Projects Under Governor Abiodun

The administration has undertaken major housing initiatives, including:

Prince Court Estate, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta: 750 housing units across Phases 1, 2, and 3.

Prince Court Estate, Kobape: 527 units along Siun-Sagamu Expressway.

Prince Court Estate, Sagamu: 200 units.

Prince Court Estate, Itanrin, Ijebu Ode: 200 units.

Prince Court Estate, Ilaro: 100 units.

Gateway Aviation Village, Iperu: 200 units.

    Affordable Housing Policies and Incentives

Understanding that estate projects are expensive and capital-intensive, the government has implemented various incentives to make housing accessible to the working class. These include:

Discounted rates for housing units: A downward review of selling prices, such as reducing AAK Degun Estate, Laderin, from N7 million to N5 million.

Refunds to allottees: Refund of N1.5 million to allottees of AAK Degun Estate.

Relaxed terms and conditions for housing unit purchases.

Introduction of a mortgage option: Reduction of interest rates from 18% to 6%.

Implementation of the “Site and Service Land Scheme”: Facilitating affordable land ownership.

    Budget Allocation to Housing Development

To further bolster the housing sector, the Ogun State Government has allocated N16.9 billion to housing development in the 2025 budget, distributed as follows:

N7.5 billion for legacy housing projects.

N4.5 billion for the Ministry of Housing.

N4.9 billion for the Housing Corporation.

    Expanding Housing Opportunities

In line with Governor Abiodun’s ambitious plans to address housing deficits, the state has also initiated the 200-unit Aviation Village Housing Project in Iperu-Remo. This project aims to provide residential options and support economic activities around the soon-to-be-completed Gateway International Airport.

Since assuming office in 2019, Governor Abiodun has consistently demonstrated his commitment to providing affordable housing for Ogun State’s workforce and residents. In less than six years, his administration’s housing interventions have received widespread praise, encouraging more people to subscribe to government-backed housing schemes.

By ensuring that civil servants and the general populace can secure affordable homes, the administration is also addressing concerns about post-retirement stability. This strategic move promotes economic growth, enhances productivity, and fosters responsible citizenship.

    A Legacy for the Future

Governor Abiodun’s vision for housing development is a testament to his administration’s commitment to the well-being of Ogun State residents. His proactive policies have not only provided homes but also laid a foundation for sustainable urban planning and economic growth.

As housing continues to be a major challenge across Nigeria, other state governments should take a cue from Ogun State’s model. By expanding housing opportunities and bridging the housing deficit gap, Ogun State is setting the pace for achieving SDG 11.1 well ahead of the 2030 target.

Honourable Commissioner Jagunmolu Jamiu Akande Omoniyi is the driving force behind Ogun State’s housing transformation, implementing Governor Abiodun’s vision. As Commissioner for Housing, Omoniyi has showcased exceptional leadership, spearheading initiatives that provide affordable housing to all, regardless of income level.

His commitment to inclusive housing policies has earned recognition, leveraging his experience as a renowned real estate practitioner to propel the state’s housing development agenda. With plans to deliver thousands of affordable housing units in 2025, Omoniyi’s dedication to public service and passion for affordable housing have set a high standard for public servants.

Under the visionary leadership of Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ogun State is poised to effectively address and sustain its housing needs, ensuring a brighter future for its residents.

JUST IN: Gov Abiodun signs N1.054trn 2025 appropriation bill into law

    • …promises to rejig Olokola deep sea port project

Governor Dapo Abiodun on Monday signed the N1.054 trillion 2025 State Appropriation Bill into law at the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, principal officers of the House, the deputy governor, and members of the State Executive Council.

After receiving the clean copies of the Bill, Governor Abiodun revealed plans to sign a partnership agreement with prospective partners for the development of the Olokola Sea Port in the coming month.

He also highlighted his administration’s commitment to enhancing basic infrastructure by signing more Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with private corporate bodies in renewable energy, agriculture, and other key sectors to bolster the State’s economic growth.

He said: “It is my pleasure to announce to you that in the coming month, we will be signing the partnership agreement with potential partners in our port development. The Olokola Port is back on track.

“In the coming year, you will see us signing more Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with private players in the areas of renewable energy, energy transition, and agriculture, particularly animal husbandry. We intend to join the league of those producing beef and pork, not just for domestic consumption, but for export.

“We will continue to provide more infrastructure, particularly roads, in every local government in the State. We will continue in our stride to provide the right infrastructure and the right situation to ensure that students in Ogun State learn in a conducive environment. We will continue to pursue our healthcare program in primary health care, secondary, and tertiary, and of course, our policy on ‘grow what you eat and eat what you grow.’ We are going to be more aggressive in the area of agriculture.”

While noting that his administration would be relentless in the pursuit of infrastructure that would engender more socio-economic development, Governor Abiodun revealed that emphasis on arterial roads like the Ijebu-Ode-Epe, Sagamu-Abeokuta, Atan-Lusada-Agbara, Ota-Abeokuta, and Ilaro-Owode roads had played important roles as they had helped to improve the State’s Internally Generated Revenue through the influx of more people and industries.

He acknowledged the difficulties people are going through due to the bold policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to pull the country out of the woods but maintained that his administration had risen to the occasion by providing needed palliatives to cushion the effects and help the people navigate the period.

“I want to assure you that we can only hope for more wins in the future. It has been a very difficult year for us all, not just as a state but as a country. Our President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, started his tenure with very bold reforms that have resulted in some unintended consequences that we must all endure so that we can have a country that is solvent,” he added

He appreciated members of the Assembly for the speedy passage of the Bill after due diligence and commended their high level of commitment to their constituents and the state, noting that their collaboration with the executive arm had led to the state growing in leaps and bounds.

Speaking earlier, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, noted that the speedy passage of the Bill was in keeping with the promise made to the governor when he presented the Bill to the assembly on the 4th of December this year, adding that no budget bill had been passed before Christmas in the past.

While appreciating the governor for the facelift given to the Assembly Complex, Rt. Hon. Elemide said his colleagues worked tirelessly to ensure that the budget was passed on time so as to keep the wheels of the state’s progress moving.

He assured that the Assembly would continue collaborating with the other arms of government to ensure that the people enjoy the dividends of democracy.

BREAKING : Tribunal upholds Gov Abiodun’s victory in Ogun

After over 11 hours of pouring through the governorship election matters between Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress(APC), the three – man election petition panel on Saturday upheld the election victory of Abiodun in the March 18, 2023 governorship election in Ogun State.

The tribunal headed by Hamidu Kunaza affirmed Abiodun’s election by the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC), submitting that the petitioners had failed to prove their case beyond reasonable doubt.

In a unanimous decision by the panel, the court dismissed Adebutu’s decision for “lack of merit” and affirmed the second respondent (Dapo Abiodun) as duly elected Governor as declared by INEC.

Justice Kunaza held the allegations of corrupt practices, non-compliance with the electoral Act, multiple thumb printing of ballot papers, ballot stuffing, and forgery by Adebutu and his party were not proved beyond any reasonable doubt.

He also described the testimonies of the witnesses brought by the petitioners as “industrially manufactured, mechanically produced and adopted” by them, thereby “proven to similar, too coincindental and unbelievable.”
