  • ‎IPOB-Military Face-Off: Gov. Ikpeazu, Traditional Rulers, Army meet

    The face-off between members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Nigerian Army has changed the security situation in Aba, the commercial nerve centre of Abia state, Southern Nigeria.
    The tensed security situation in the state came after the Nigerian Army launchedOperation Python Dance II in the Southeast region.

    The operation led to a face-off between the Nigerian Army and some members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) onSunday, September 10.

    The Sunday clash in its wake left three (3) people injured, with the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu saying the Nigeria Army is instigating IPOB members to pick up arms.

    The Nigerian Army returned to Kanu’s Afaraukwu country homein Abia state on Tuesday, September 12 with about 10 Armoured Carrier Vehicles and seven Hilux vans, with the development forcing shop owners in the area to close immediately.

    Apparently displeased with the security situation in the state, the Abia state governor,Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, imposed a three-day curfew on Aba in a statement signed by him and sent to the media

    On Wednesday, the Governor extended the three days curfew in Aba to Friday, September 15, 2017, a move which is aimed at calming the tension in the commercial nerve centre of the state.

    The governor , alongside Traditional Rulers in the State, met with the General Officer Commanding (GOC) commanding the 82 Division of the Nigeria Army Enugu, Major General A.B. Abubakar, at Government House in Umuahia, the Abia state capital on Wednesday.

    During the meeting, Ikpeazu and the Traditional rulers appealed to the GOC to reduce military presence in the state, particularly in Aba and umuahia, as tension in the areas have gone down

    The governor noted that the Nigerian Police and other security agencies should ensure that those who are brought into Abia from other states, in order to cause trouble and engage in acts capable of causing breach of law and order, should be prevented from entering the state.

    In a related development, the Nigerian Army says the General Officer Commanding 82 Division is investigating a viral video which shows some soldiers molesting some people suspected to be members to be members of the IPOB

  • Governors, senators storm Abia for Gov Ikpeazu’s mother’s burial

    Governors, senators and other top dignitaries, yesterday witnessed the internment of the remains of the mother of the governor of Abia State, Deaconess Bessie Ikpeazu, in Umuobiakwa community, Obingwa council area of Abia State.

    Leading the dignitaries were Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, who represented President Muhammadu Buhari; Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose; Cross River State governor, Prof. Ben Ayade; Akwa Ibom State governor, Chief Udom Emmanuel; Ebonyi State governor, Chief Dave Umahi and the Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu.

    Other dignitaries who graced the event include Anambra State deputy governor, Chief Nkem Okeke, Senator Theodore Orji, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Chief Judge of Abia State, Justice Theresa Uzokwevernor of Anambra State, Dr. Peter Obi among others.

    Speaking at the occasion, Ekweremadu described death as a fulfillment of God’s design for man on earth, which was inevitable and beyond human remedy.

    He noted that the deceased lived a fulfilled life on earth and has gone back to her creator, and urged Governor Ikpeazu to strive to deliver more democracy dividends to the people of the state.

    In his homily at the funeral service, President of the Eastern Nigeria Union Mission of the Seventh Day Adventist, SDA, Church, Pastor Bassey Udoh, said the late Deaconess Bessie lived for the less-privileged and touched many lives.

    Udoh, who admonished the people to live worthy lives in order to be remembered for their good works when they die, commended Ikpeazu for the democracy dividends he had delivered in the state since he assumed office, and charged him not to relent.

    According to the cleric, “Mama Bessie Ikpeazu has done her part. She touched many lives; people should strive to do good and make a difference wherever they find themselves. Life is not about what you acquire. It is not about position.”

    He urged the bereaved family not to mourn like people without hope, and advised them to take solace in the fact that Mama Bessie lived an exemplary life while on earth.

    Gov. Ikpeazu, other top Abia officials to storm Lagos

    The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu and his entourage are among the strong delegation from the state who will be at the Teslim Balogun Stadium on Sunday to witness the handing over of the league trophy to Enyimba FC as the 2014/2015 champions.

    The People’s Elephant were declared the league winners last week in Aba after they held Warri Wolves to a goalless draw to race to unassailable 69 points from 37 matches.

    The Chairman of the Aba giants, Felix Anyansi Agwu who spoke to SportingLife from Swaziland said that the Governor of the State, Dr Ikpeazu and other government functionaries have given their consent to come  and rejoice with the club on their seventh League title.

    SportingLife also gathered that arrangements have been concluded to take as many as possible supporters and fans of the club to Lagos from Umuahia and Aba respectively to come and cheer the team as they are handed league trophy on Sunday.

    Five buses have been placed at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba and two at the Umuahia Township Stadium to transport the fans and supporters to Lagos today ahead of the concluding fixture of the season against Sunshine Stars at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

    SportingLife was also told that fans and supporters of Enyimba in Lagos have promised to make Sunday electrifying for their darling club and have printed T-shirts, caps and other gift items they will like to share on match day as their show of appreciation for the team’s feat.

    Before the seventh league title secured last weekend, Enyimba have previously won the league in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2010 and also have four Federation Cup titles in their kitty apart from four Nigeria Super Cup titles and two African Super Cup titles as well. They won the CAF Champions League on two occasions in 2003 and 2004.

    Glo League title celebration:Gov Ikpeazu hits Lagos for Enyimba

    Abia State GovernorOkezie Ikpeazu will be in Lagos next Sunday for the official crowning of Enyimba FC of Aba as the 2014/15 Glo Premier League champions by the League Management Company (LMC).

    The Peoples’ Elephants won their seventh league title after they were held to a goalless draw by title contenders,Warri Wolves in a matchday 37 encounter at the Enyimba International stadium,Aba last Sunday.

    Having secured 69 points after last Sunday’s game and with their closest rivals, Warri Wolves on second position with 63 points, Enyimba took an unassailable lead ahead of their last game of the season against Sunshine Stars of Akure at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

    Enyimba chairman,Felix Anyansi confirmed to SportingLife via a telephone interview that Governor Ikpeazu will lead other members of the state executive cabinet to witness the crowning of the team as the champions of the Nigerian League.

    “The governor, who has been the number one supporter of our team has graciously accepted to be in Lagos on Sunday to watch the game against Sunshine Stars.

    “The management, coaches and players of the club are excited that the governor will be around to receive the trophy and also give them the much needed moral support,”Anyansi said..
