At the recovery conference held at Bayero University recently, Governor Yusuf said his government, since coming into office, has spent over N2 billion to acquire and distribute instructional materials to basic and post-basic schools across the state.

The conference was held in collaboration with the UKAid, PLANE Nigeria, and Arewa Consultative Forum with the theme, ‘Repositioning Education in Kano state: Navigating the Path to Excellence.

He said: “We have approved the release of over N2.7bn for the construction of the first phase of 176 classrooms and 88 offices across the 44 local governments. Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State has appealed to the residents of the state to avoid any form of provocation during the planned protests.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Yusuf made this call while addressing business leaders, traditional rulers, and religious leaders at the Government House on Wednesday.

Yusuf emphasised that protests would not yield the desired results, stating, “protest will not take us anywhere.”

He highlighted the state government’s efforts towards implementing policies and programmes aimed at enhancing the well-being of citizens, showcasing Kano’s blessings.

Yusuf said, “We are united in our quest for positive change that will yield the desired objectives of peace, progress, and political stability.

However, I must emphasize that social media has had a negative impact by allowing the abuse of leaders, which will not help us achieve our goals.

“This must stop, as it will only hinder our progress. We are facing a critical situation of hunger and other challenges, and we must work together to address them constructively.

“Our administration is currently sponsoring over 1,000 students pursuing various courses in foreign countries.

“We are also actively working to empower women and combat poverty in the state through a monthly program, which has already benefited over 5,000 women with a monthly stipend of N5,000, totaling over N260 million.”

According to him, the state government is committed to providing access to clean drinking water in all metropolitan areas.

Yusuf said: ”Furthermore, we have recently procured N1 billion worth of fertilizer, and distributed the same free of charge to the rural communities, aiming to boost food production and support agricultural development.

”The governor’s appeal for calm and restraint came as the state prepared for the planned protests.

”I am urging the residents to maintain peace and avoid any actions that could lead to unrest.

“We will not condone any form of violence or destructive behavior during the protest.

”The destruction of government property and looting of shops will not be tolerated.”

  • Why I ordered Bayero’s arrest, by Gov Yusuf

Why I ordered Bayero’s arrest, by Gov Yusuf

Governor Abba Yusuf has explained why he ordered arrest of deposed emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, for which the court awarded N10 million damages to the monarch.

Speaking through his spokesman, Sunusi Bature, the Governor said he called for Bayero‘s arrest because he (Bayero) returned into two days after his dethronement to reclaim the palace, creating unrest in the state.

Bature was reacting to an article: ‘A Rendezvous with Recklessness and Executive Rascality,’ by Bala Ibrahim who accused Governor Yusuf of rascality and recklessness in power.

The Federal High Court in Kano recently ordered the state government to pay Bayero the sum of N10 million for breaching his fundamental rights, personal liberty and freedom of movement.

Citing Sections 35(1) and 41(1) of the 1999 Constitution, the court, presided by Justice Simon Amobeda, held that it was wrong for Yusuf to order Bayero’s arrest without lawful justification, which he said forced the applicant into house arrest for fear of been arrested.

Bala Ibrahim had used the ruling to mock and criticise the governor of being power drunk and taking reckless decisions, including demolition of buildings and the order to arrest Bayero in which the court granted compensations to all the applicants.

But Bature said: “Does Bala Ibrahim actually understand the workings of government and governance?

“I do not want to go into judicial pronouncements, but the point I want to make clear is that the issue of Kano Emirship is straightforward with the repeal of the Kano Emirate Law (2019) and enactment of Kano Emirate Law (2024), which gave Governor Yusuf the power to abolish the five emirates and return Kano to its glorious and historic position of one emirate.

“This is the wish of the people of Kano state.

“The reappointment of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II did not also come to anyone as a surprise, because his dethronement and consequent banishment by Abdullahi Ganduje and his co-travellers was done out of malice.

“Now, calling for the arrest of dethroned Emir Aminu Bayero was only done for public good as his entrance into Kano, shortly after his dethronement posed a serious security threat which is being managed up till today.

“Governor Abba Yusuf remains the Chief Security Officer of Kano state, and no sane leader would fold his arms and watch Kano snowballs into a state of anarchy without taking action.”

On demolition, the governor said: “Again, the demolition of buildings and structures illegally acquired by former governor Ganduje, his family and friends, was an exercise carried out in good faith.

“It was an exercise pegged on the efforts to recover public property from the hands of very few individuals who believed they could pocket public funds, structures and resources and get away with them without giving a wink.

“We will not be deterred by propagandists like Bala Ibrahim doing the bidding of their paymasters, at the detriment of the welfare of the good people of Kano state and the socio-economic development of our dear state.”

  • BREAKING: We won’t arrest Bayero, security agents defy Gov Yusuf

BREAKING: We won’t arrest Bayero, security agents defy Gov Yusuf

Security agents on Saturday said they won’t arrest deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero as ordered by Governor Abba Yusuf.

The Governor, in a statement by his Director General, Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature Tofa, ordered the arrest of Bayero, accusing him of “creating tension in the state.”

“The former Emir was smuggled into Kano city last night in an attempt to forcefully return to the palace two days after being deposed by the Governor,” Yusuf said.

But the Commissioner of Police in Kano, Mohammed Usain Gumel, who addressed newsmen at the Command Headquarters, said the police and all security agencies in the state won’t carry out the order.

He said they were obeying the court order that restrained the State Government from enforcing the new law that reinstated Lamido Sanusi as 16th Emir of Kano.

With him at the briefing were: ML Falala (NSCDC); MA Sadiq (Army Commander); IS Abdullahi (Fed Road Safety Corps) and Sulaimam of the Correctional Centre, among other heads of security agencies.

Gumel said:  “The Police Command is expressly obeying the Court Order with SUIT No. FHC/KN/CS/182/2024 Dated 23rd May, 2024 issued by the Federal High Court sitting in Kano alongside ail Law Enforcement agents in the State.

“Therefore, we are calling on members of the public to know that the Police in the State is working together with the military and other security agencies and are with full capacity for providing the adequate security to everyone as we are committed to carrying out our statutory duties as provided by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

“No doubt, the law abiding people of Kano State are known for a revered cultural heritage and respect for constituted authorities and in this regard, advised to remain calm, patient, and to keep cooperating with security agencies as the matter described will be addressed by the Court on the 3rd of June 2024.

“Let me also remind you that the position of the law is very clear as whoever, under whatever guise is found to be planning to disrupt the peace being enjoyed in the State or feel that he she can jeopardize the existing security settings in the State will be arrested and made to face full wrath of the law.

“Therefore, as the Police Command is leading other security agencies to sustain the peace and peaceful coexistence for overriding interests, miscreants should stay clear of violence in all its ramifications and should not take advantage or hijack the current situation to launch unprovoked attack on people, property and infrastructure of the State. Any person found with such tendency will be ruthlessly dealt with according to the law of the land

“By and large, the combined security agencies in the State have set out all machinery in place to ensure no breakdown of law and order as the safety and security of all the inhabitants in the State remain sacrosanct.

“On this note, on behalf of all the security agencies, I thank all the good people of the State for their understanding, prayers, continuous support and cooperation.”

But in a swift reaction, Kano Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, said there was nothing anybody could do to change Sanusi’s reinstatement.

Gwarzo spoke to reporters at palace of the Emir where Sanusi has been moved to.

He said if the police had received court order and were obeying it, the State Government did not.

He said: “When we asked who gave the court order, they said Justice Mohammed Liman and asked: the judge who is in America?”

The Deputy Governor accused the police of escorting Bayero back into the State, saying that the State Government was doing everything possible to avoid bloodshed.
