Rivers govt warns against militancy, pipeline vandalism

The Rivers State government has warned militant youths who are vandalising pipelines and other installations of oil companies in the Niger Delta to sheathe their swords and embrace the truce initiated by the Federal Government.

Rivers Deputy Governor, Dr. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, made the admonition yesterday at the Government House, Port Harcourt.

She called on stakeholders to ensure a lasting solution to the endemic poverty and poor infrastructural development in the crude oil and gas-rich region and work towards upgrading the capital base of Port Harcourt like that of Abuja and Lagos, to equate it as truly the Industrial hub of Nigeria.

Harry-Banigo stated that the continuous bombing of oil facilities in the Niger Delta by the Niger Delta Avengers and other militant groups was inimical to economic, environmental and human survival, stressing that the water, land and the entire ecosystem were being polluted and destroyed.

Rivers deputy governor noted that although the vandalism of oil facilities in the Niger Delta was being perpetuated outside Rivers state, but called on parents and guardians across the region to prevail on their children and wards to shun acts that would impede the actualisation of peace and sustainable development in the Niger Delta.

Harry-Banigo also said there was the need for an aggressive, pragmatic and holistic development master plan that would transform the lives of the people and create jobs for the teeming unemployed youths in the Niger Delta, pointing out that militancy and youth restiveness would be greatly reduced, when the people of the region were gainfully engaged.

Meanwhile, the Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, also yesterday inaugurated the caretaker committee chairmen of three local government areas of the state, with a charge to them to support the ongoing security drive, to rid the state of cultists.

Those inaugurated included Gbara Erelo (Khana LG council), Monday  Dum-Iye (Gokana) and Adonye Kelly Diri (Opobo/Nkoro).

Wike stated that the caretaker committee chairmen had a responsibility to cooperate with security agencies to build the security architecture of their LGAs.

He noted that any of the caretaker chairmen who failed to cooperate with the security agencies would lose his appointment.

Rivers governor said: “Make sure you cooperate with the security agencies to flush out cultists. We cannot allow the cultists disturb the peace and security of the state. Enough is enough.”

Wike also disclosed that he had received security reports, which he said the security agencies would act upon, as they relate to the sponsors of the cultists.

He noted that any official of the Rivers government found to be connected to the cultists would be arrested and prosecuted.

The governor also directed the caretaker committee chairmen to ensure that they pay their workers’ monthly salaries regularly.

Cross River plans to ban use of wood for roofing — Ayade

Gov. Ben Ayade of Cross River has expressed his administration’s resolve to legislate against the use of wood for roofing to check deforestation, restore lost greenery and boost forest regeneration.

Ayade spoke when Ms Elsie Attafuah, the Senior Regional Technical Adviser, United Nations Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (UN-REDD) programme, visited him at Government House, Calabar.

He said: “We are in a process of enacting a new law that will prohibit the use of woods for roofing and encourage the use of steel instead.

“So, very soon when the house passes the law, we will stop roofing with woods and when this happens, the demand for timber will drop drastically.

“As we speak, a company is already on ground to start production of these roofing materials to meet the needs in the industry and reduce the dependence on wood as deliberate plans to save and protect the forest.’’

Ayade also urged the UN “to do away with theoretical work and be more practical in its programmes in a manner that will translate into wealth creation among Nigerians’’.

He said the state government expected the REDD programme to impact in a desired manner on the citizenry, particularly host communities, to the reserved forests across the state.

Ayade said that in the last three years the REDD programme focused only on training and educating people on understanding measurement analysis baselines, safeguards.

He said although the programme was appreciable, “ the time has come when they must reflect on the needs of the people to better their lots.’’

The governor said “REDD PLUS is a plus and so please reflect on the needs of my people. Please fast track this readiness so that we can get into the investment phase because truly, everything REDD has done is wise.

“ What they have not done is that they have not been able to put one tree on the ground, so I don’t know how you want to reduce emissions when you are not focusing on the practical aspect.

“Essentially, REDD Plus is intended to preserve the forest for the good of mankind. So, if that man that you are preserving the forest for has to die of hunger, REDD must be coming too slow.

“So, for me as a governor, a professor of Environmental Science, a lawyer, a combination of all these tells me clearly that the communities are not having a fair deal.

“ The communities are in pain and you must look into this as soon as possible. The ultimate thing is that action must be on ground,’’ he said.

Ayade said REDD Plus still remained a technical issue but added: “We are reducing it to the level where the local community can participate in planting, nursing and maturing trees.

“It is still a process ahead, let us fast track this process and give us a good clearance, so that people truly will enjoy the benefits of the luxury of their forest; let them finally see the reward for conserving and preserving the forest.’’

Attafuah earlier told the governor that she was in the state with her team to commence the implementation process of the programme.

She said the REDD programme would bring the desired benefits to the communities where the project was being carried out.

She said that policy dialogue at the highest level was necessary for the smooth transition of the UN-REDD projects from strategy to implementation.

Attafuah also solicited the support of the state for a successful transition.

Players’ protest in Government House was orchestrated – Iorfa

Following the protest of Lobi Stars Football Club players to the Benue State Governor over unpaid salaries and match bonuses amidst poor management, the Vice Chairman of the club has responded saying his enemies want him out because he didn’t support the new government during electioneering.

Mr Iorfa, who have been at the helm of affairs at the club for over 14 years explained that he couldn’t afford to support the present Governor, Samuel Ortom as that would have amounted to anti-party activities considering that the ruling party then was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Because Suswam is in the PDP, I cannot as chairman of the Club be seen to be indulging in anti party activities given the government in power. Money only comes to us from government because it is a government club. So, when the new government came, people thought that they will take advantage of it. Those who want to blackmail me are just being mischievous but I am too big for that. I don’t have their time. I will always give my best and we’ve been in the FA Cup final four times and preparing for the final against Akwa United.”

He added that he had run the club credible well and wondered why people were antagonising instead of supporting him.

“Those who complain that I have led the club for 14 years without a league trophy should ask themselves how many teams in the league have won the league title in Nigeria. Only four have done so namely Kano Pillars, Dolphins, Enyimba and Bayelsa United. I don’t understand why people instead of supporting the team to grow are bent on running me down.

“The English Premier League that many know about, how many of the teams in the league have won the League trophy. I can beat my chest proudly to say I have led Lobi Stars creditably. We’ve played in the continent, have won the FA Cup, have finished as runners up and have never gone on relegation. Clubs like Shooting Stars, Plateau United to mention a few have suffered that fate but Lobi has been in the league every season.”

  • No medicinal value in cow-skin consumption – Expert

No medicinal value in cow-skin consumption – Expert

The Medical Consultant, Ultra Modern Clinic, Government House, Awka, Dr Sunny Ekwunife, has debunked claims that consumption of cow-skin (ponmo) is healthy for the elderly.

Ekwunife told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Awka that animal skin does not have any proven medical value, but rather it is unhealthy.

“There is no truth in believing that cow skin (ponmo) is good for the elderly.

“How can a damaged motor-tyre that has chemical components added to it while producing, add anything good to a cow skin which undergoes a process of roasting with its flame add to the human body?” he asked.

Ekwunife advised that rather than consuming that which has no nutritional value, it should be used to create wealth.

“It is mere waste of the cow skin for our people to be consuming it by eating which is a waste on its own.

“It will be more beneficial to the economy to use it to produce lasting products as belts, shoes, so as to improve our living standard and generate funds for the benefit of the nation,” he said.

However, the consultant observed that with the false information the people are feed with, it would be hard to stop the consumption of leather by some communities.
