Government launches fire prevention sensitisation campaign at markets

Lagos State, through Safety Commission and Fire and Rescue Service, has launched a public enlightenment campaign on fire prevention at markets.

The advocacy campaign, according to the government, is to forestall fire incidents at markets during the harmattan, ‘’as residents prepare to celebrate end of the year.’’

Director General of Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, speaking after the launch at Jankara Market, on Lagos Island, stressed the need for traders to be safety conscious and mindful of their environments, to prevent fire.

Mojola, who acknowledged that most markets were complying with the state’s directives on safety, said the enlightenment must continue, to reduce fire incidents.

He said:  “The message is that they should be careful when carrying out their activities. Carelessness is a big issue, because carelessness and human errors are the main causes of fire.”

Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs Margaret Adeseye, said the campaign was about educating the public, particularly traders at markets, to understand market fire safety tips.

She said in the past, the state recorded a large number of fire incidents at markets, noting that 75 per cent of the fire outbreak was as a result of carelessness.

The Chairman of Wrist Watch Sellers Association, Jankara Market, Mr. Abdul Rahman Yusuf, thanked the government through the Safety Commission and Fire Service for bringing advocacy campaigns to markets, to prevent fire.
