    UI shut over students protest

Authorities at the University of Ibadan have closed down the school following students protest.

In a broadcast today, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Idowu Olayinka stated that the closure followed protest by students and forestall breakdown of peace on campus.

All undergraduates have been ordered to vacate the campus latest by 6pm today.

The Institution had earlier fixed first Semester examination for June but the examination will now commence on July 17th.

The Vice Chancellor however said that postgraduate students can continue with their lectures.

Students had Monday block major highway on Mokola-UI-Ojoo causing gridlock‎.

This was sequel to the resolutions of the students congress reached on Saturday where in it was agreed that the management be given two days ultimatum to constitute Students Welfare Board and set up fact finding committee to look into the issue of Hot-plates in halls of residences.

The students also resolved that there will not be any examinations if the university fails to issue it ID cards which were paid for last session and this session at the rate of 650 and 1,300 respectively.

They also vowed to disrupt Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s press conference which was earlier scheduled to hold inside the institution forcing the program to another venue.

In a special release the university management informed students that efforts are currently being made to ensure that identity cards are produced and distributed starting from the middle of June.

The Management has also issued a circular informing Deans of Faculties that students’ registration forms and any other valid University instrument be considered as sufficient for admittance into examination halls in the forthcoming first semester examinations.

The University Management stated that it was not unmindful of the hardship that the delay in the issuance of identity cards has caused our students, but we appeal for their understanding.

The University Management will also, very soon, convene a meeting of the Students’ Welfare Board which is a statutory committee of Senate, to discuss other students’ welfare issues, so that a lasting solution can be proffered.

The Oyo State Government has warned that it will not tolerate any individual, group, investor or organization to sabotage its Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) drive, saying that whoever conspires to defraud the state Government would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi pronounced this warning through his Special Adviser, Solid Minerals, Hon. In his own remarks, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security, ACP Gafar Arowolo (Rtd) stated that adequate security measures have been put in place to enhance the implementation of revenue payments to government coffers, advising that all major stakeholders in the state should obey the law of the land as anybody found guilty will be prosecuted.

Similarly, the State Government has embarked on a wake-up sensitization call to both private and informal business sectors in the state on the need to pay their taxes regularly and as and when due.

The Special Adviser to Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Internal Generated Revenue, Mr.Biyi Oloko, explained that the sensitization programme was very essential in order to educate and enlighten the people on the importance of regular payment of tax.

According to Mr Oloko, “there are many benefits in paying tax which include provision of infrastructure, good water supply, provision of health care facilities, good education among others. Regular payment of tax would make the Government fulfill its electoral promises to the people.”

The recent effort, which took place at Challenge, Dugbe and Bodija markets and environs, gave the Government officials from Board of Internal Revenue the opportunity to educate members of the community from one shop to another on the need to pay their taxes regularly.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, has felicitated with Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer (Worldwide) of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), on his 75th birthday.

The governor congratulated the clergyman in a statement signed by Yomi Layinka, his Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, and made available to newsmen in Ibadan on Friday.

Ajimobi, who described Adeboye as “a true shepherd in the Vineyard of God,’’ said that the cleric had healed the broken-hearted and the weary.

He said that Adeboye had also turned backsliders to their creator through fervent prayers, prophetic utterances and spiritual guidance.

“Papa Adeboye’s untiring efforts at attending to the welfare and well-being of Christians have resulted in the expansion of RCCG which is undoubtedly the fastest growing church in Africa.

“His fatherly role has also made him a rallying point for the Christian community in Nigeria,’’ he said.

Ajimobi noted that Adeboye played `significant role’ in stabilizing the polity through his constant prayers and spiritual interventions for Nigeria which had helped in holding the country together.

He said: “I am particularly fascinated by Papa Adeboye’s uncommon humility, simplicity, brilliance and articulation.

“All these have served as an inspiration to me in the running of the affairs of Oyo State.

“I have also been encouraged by his periodic visits and prayers for my government and the people of Oyo State, particularly through his regular attendance of our annual Christmas carol.’’

The governor prayed God to grant the renowned cleric long life and sound health in his service to Nigeria and humanity.

Battle over Olubadan stool: Court orders service on Olubadan

An Oyo state High Court Wednesday, ordered that the renewed writ of summons and other documents in the suit filed by the Seriki Chiefs, be served on counsel to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji.

The battle over the stool of Olubadan of Ibadanland continued Wednesday with major parties to the case present in court against previous sitting when counsel to the Olubadan were not represented in the court.

The Seriki Chiefs that include Adebayo Oyediji, Olalekan Fakunle, Rashidi Abinupagun and Gabriel Kofoworola, had in the suit dragged Governor Abiola Ajimobi, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Oba Adetunji, to court, over the installation of the monarch, following the death of Oba Samuel Odulana, Odugade 1.

At the last hearing of the case, the judge had drawn the attention of counsel to the Seriki Chiefs, Mr. Abideen Adediran, to the error in serving the writ of summons which was filed in May, 2016 on the Secretary to the Olubadan-In-Council, without the order of the court.

Adediran had urged the court to fix a date for the hearing of the case, stating that since the suit was filed, Oba Adetunji has failed to appear in court or be represented by any counsel.

During the resumed hearing of the case yesterday, Adediran was to move a motion to serve Oba Adetunji through substituted service by pasting the writ of summons on the wall of the Olubadan Traditional Council in Ibadan South East local government Secretariat, Mapo, Ibadan.

However before he was to move the motion, a counsel, Mr. Adewale Ajewole, announced his appearance for Oba Adetunji, stating that he was briefed on the case on Tuesday.

Adediran then drawn the attention of the court on the need to serve Oba Adetunji, who is the third defendant in the case, new writ of summons, noting that the law states that a motion can only be subsistence for six months.

The judge however ordered that the writ of summons be served in court on the counsel to the Olubadan, maintaining that with his appearance in court, he is fully in the case and that there is no need for substituted service.

Justice Abass who then adjourned the case to April 10, berated the attitude of counsel representing government and its officials, for coming to court when they like.

The judge who was apparently reacting to the non-appearance in court of counsel to Ajimobi and the state Commissioner of Justice, Mr. Salau Adegboyega, warned that he will not hesitate to report such attitude of state counsel to the appropriate quarters.

Ajimobi signs LCDA bill into law

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has assented to the bill creating 35 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state.

Mr. Toye Arulogun, the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, said this while briefing newsmen in Ibadan.

He said that the bill, which was enacted by the state House of Assembly, gave legal backing to the creation of LCDAs in the state.

Ajimobi, he said, assented to the bill on Oct. 6 after extensive deliberations on the legislation by the state house of assembly.

He said that a committee would be set up to formulate the modalities for the smooth take off of the LCDAs.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the State Assembly at its sitting on June 16 discussed the creation of LCDAs and subsequently sent correspondence on it to the executive for consideration.

The assembly in its correspondence requested the executive arm to create LCDAs in order to facilitate development at the grassroots.

Arulogun said that there would be 14 LCDAs in Ibadan zone, two in Ibarapa zone, four in Oyo zone, seven in Ogbomoso zone and eight in Oke-ogun zone.

He added that with the creation of the LCDAs, development would be hastened in local communities and government would be brought closer to the people.

He said creation of LCDAs was a strategic management vehicle for more effective and efficient public service delivery.

  • Why we stopped full funding of tertiary schools, by Ajimobi

Why we stopped full funding of tertiary schools, by Ajimobi

    •’Oyo, Osun’ll resolve LAUTECH crisis’

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has attributed his administration’s decision to stop funding of state-owned tertiary institutions to dwindling resources, as well as the need for their managers to be creative.

The governor stated this at the dedication of a multi-million Vice Chancellor’s Lodge donated to the Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo by Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN).

The administration conveyed stoppage of subventions to all state-owned tertiary institutions to their chief executives in a September 20, 2016 letter.

The letter stated that the institutions should no longer expect subventions, whether for any arrears, current or future expenses.

Addressing reporters, Ajimobi, however, said government would continue to support the institutions with 25 per cent subventions as a sign of its commitment to their well-being.

He explained the way to go for better funding and management of education is participation of all stakeholders including parents, philanthropists and the private sector.

The governor stressed: “Looking at the economic situation of the country and in the whole world, we have dwindling oil revenue. It has affected virtually all aspects of our socio-economic life and we are unable to really cope.

“Therefore, we believe that apart from the dwindling resources, all Nigerians must participate in education. Education is participatory.

“It is not for the government alone or for the government alone to pay for education. We believe that parents, teachers, everybody must participate.

“What we are witnessing here today for me, exemplifies our belief in participatory education. Here is an individual, a great Nigerian, an accomplished legal luminary who on his own has built several institutions.

“Nigerians must copy this man. Nigerians must contribute to education and the development of our children.”

He also pointed out that managers of the institutions need to work hard to plug leakages and be creative in serving their communities.

“We are still supporting the tertiary institutions. We have not cancelled subventions completely.

“We have reduced it from 100 per cent to 25 per cent. And we see many loopholes, leakages. They should go and plug them.

“We believe that they can raise Internally Generated Revenues (IGR) through efficient management of their resources, through plugging of leakages and through offering various services to the community.

“You can see that private institutions are not taking subventions from anybody. Education is not absolutely free. Nothing is absolutely free.”

On the crisis rocking the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Ajimobi said: “Before we came in 2010, the former governor, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala and his Osun State counterpart then, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, had an agreement to transfer LAUTECH to Oyo State.

“But Governor Rauf Aregbesola went to court and the case got to the Supreme Court. In 2012, the court gave a judgment that co-ownership of LAUTECH by both states remained unbroken.

“The judgment held that unless both owners sit down and agree, no party can singlehandedly decide to severe the relationship.

“Agreed that Osun State is not paying as it should be paying, Oyo State has paid substantially more than Osun has paid.

“What we are saying now is for us to sit down and see the need for co-owners to fulfill our obligations.”

Oyo Lawmaker’s killers: We are robbers, not assassins

*as police parades four suspect, declares three others wanted

One of the four suspects arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of a member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Gideon Aremu, on July 1, 2016, Ayobami Adedeji (23) has disclosed that they were mere robbers and not assassins as it was insinuated.

Adedeji and three other suspects; Adediran Oladapo (31), Kareem Isiaka, and Sodiq Adedeji (20) were paraded by the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Leye Oyebade at the Police Command headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan on Monday.

The lawmaker from the Labour Party, representing Oorelope constituency, was until his death the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Public Relations and Security.

He was killed in front of his house in Alakia area of the state as he alighted from his car to open his gate. Three gunmen on a motorcycle were said to have trailed him to the house and shot him severally after a brief argument according to family source.

In an attempt to quicken the arrest of the killers, the state Governor Abiola Ajimobi placed a N5m bounty on the heads of the gunmen responsible for the murder of the lawmaker.

Narrating how the lawmaker was killed, Adedeji said they did not know the status of late Aremu before one of them called ‘Abbey’ shot him after collecting his mobile phone and money.

According to him, we met at our usual Awo joint in Beere area, Ibadan, to carry out a robbery operation at Adegbayi, Ibadan on that fateful day.

“We did not track the lawmaker to his residence but it was one of us called Abbey that his mother reside in Adegbayi that brought the job to rob the lawmaker to us. I did not know why Abbey shot him, but the only thing they gave me was N40,000 which was my share of the operation.” he said

Adedeji who also confirmed to be an ex-convict said he is was jailed last year for selling Indian Hemp but was later pardoned after spending a year at the Agodi prison in Ibadan by the State Attorney General.

The suspect claimed that he became friends with Abbey, Kola Mission, Yusff Ikire at Awo joint, around Ogunmola compound in Beere after he was released from prison.

He noted that on the day they killed the lawmaker, they took off from the Awo joint after consuming Indian Hemp served to them by one Dele Awo.

But one of the arrested suspect, Sodiq Kareem, who is a criminal receiver claimed that he was not aware that the killed lawmaker’s phone he bought was a stolen one.

“It was Kola and Yusuf that sold the lawmaker’s phone to me for N12,500 but I could not make use of the phone because it was locked and has a security code, so I gave it to Kareem Isiaka aka Alfa to unlock for me or sell. Alfa sold it to Adeniran Oladapo for N16,000” he said

Also, Alfa confirmed collecting the phone from Sodiq to sell but did not know that it was a stolen phone.

Oyebade said that the arrest was made possible by a combined team of Intelligence Response Team of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and detectives from the Oyo State Police Command.

“The suspects did not have the knowledge of the status of the lawmaker. As robbers their intention was to rob him of valuable property in his possession. The victim was killed because they thought he could identify them due to a torch flashed on them during the operation.” he said

The police boss declared wanted three of the fleeing suspects which includes; Abbey, Kola Mission, and Yusuf Ikire, adding that anyone with useful information that could lead to their arrest should contact the police command.

He saluted the patience of the family of the victim, the understanding of the state government and the people of the state.

Oyebade assured that no criminal will commit crime of any magnitude in the state and get away with it.

Lauding the effort of te police, The lawmaker representing Ibadan North State Constituency II, Mr Olaleye said the effort of the police in the arrest of his colleague is very commendable.

“It is very clear to the world now that Honourable Aremu was not killed politically but by arm robbers. It’s not up to two months now and they have expose the face of this evil perpetrators and am sure those that flee too will soon be caught” he said

Also, Oyebade commissioned‎ the Secretariat of the Police Officers Wife Association (POWA) and a new police station in Ogungbade, Ibadan.

Ibadan stands still as supporters stage rally for Ajimobi

…Governor to striking workers: ‘let’s dialogue’

Ibadan, the Oyo State capital literally stood still for Governor Abiola Ajimobi yesterday as his supporters across all walks of life staged a rally in support of his policies and called on workers to dialogue with the government in the ongoing impasse over non-payment of salaries.

This came as the governor waved an olive branch to the striking workers to come for dialogue, stressing that it is an element of democracy.

The supporters, numbering about 50,000, were made up of members of about 168 trade associations across the 33 local government areas of the state.

They had gathered at the historic Mapo Hall by 9:00 am from where they moved  through the city, drumming support for the governor and his policies.

The crowd of supporters were made up of various associations such as traders, market women, hair dressers, tailors, commercial drivers, auto technicians, shoe makers and Fuji musicians. Others include association of farmers, butchers, food and fruits sellers, students and politicians.

As they moved through the popular Beere/Oje/Agodi Road, they were joined by other independent supporters.

Anchoring the achievements on enthronement of peace, the supporters called on residents and labour leaders to shun violence and any act that is detrimental to the progress of the state.

The crowd moved to Agodi from where it went to the State Secretariat where the governor addressed them.

As Ajimobi appeared, his praises rented the air with people gyrating to the tunes being  rendered by the Ibadan based Fuji musician, Rashidi Ayinde.

Ajimobi was joined by his deputy, Chief Moses Alake-Adeyemo; the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Olalekan Ali; his Chief of Staff (CoS), Dr Gbade Ojo and other top government functionaries.

Taking their turn to address the crowd, leaders of five unions including that of students, commended Ajimobi for his efforts on restoring peace to the state. They also hailed his school management initiative which had been misinterpreted as selling public schools, stressing that they had sought facts about the initiative and found that that it was a good way to rescue dwindling standards in the public school system.

Speaking on behalf of canteen operators in the state, Mrs Iyadunni Lawal, who is the president of the association, said all residents and voters are stakeholders in Oyo State. She emphasized that the association was interested in peace and harmony between the government and workers.

“Let all stakeholders sit down and resolve all issues amicably.

All of us voted. We are all stakeholders. All we want is peace and progress in the state. Let workers dialogue with the government so there will be progress and our children will return to school.” She said.

Also taking the same position, the President, Marketing Advisory Council, Mrs Labake Lawal, said:  “We are here today to assure all that Governor Ajimobi is not selling schools. We appeal to all workers not to inflict pains on us. Sit down with the government and find a peaceful solution. Traders and all of us in Oyo State are feeling the negative impact of non-payment of salaries. We are recording low sales. So, both parties need to sit together and dialogue on all grey areas to come up with an amicable solution. We also want to affirm that all market women are solidly behind Governor Ajimobi. When finances of the state improves, all stakeholders will benefit through patronage of our businesses. When two elephants fight, the grass suffers.

“All of us are concerned that government is not able to pay salaries because it is affecting all of us. But dialogue should be embraced so Ajimobi can concentrate on governance.”

Addressing the crowd, the student leader said they were happy to be part of the solidarity rally for Ajimobi because his administration brought an end to violence against students in the state. He recalled the sad incident of June 5, 2011 when some students were gruesomely murdered by hoodlums at the Iwo Road interchange.

According to him, the Ajimobi administration has since stopped violence among commercial drivers while the city of Ibadan has known peace.

His words: “We have come in a solidarity trek for peace. For the first time in six years, students and NURTW are working together. Recall that some students were killed in Iwo Road in 2011. But Ajimobi has returned peace to Oyo State. Let no group disrupt the peace in Oyo State. Let labour unions dialogue with the government. We have sought information about the school management initiative and the governor explained to us that he was not selling schools. We want to say that today, students walk anytime in the day and night. We say thank you sir. Nigerian students have come up with a proposal on how Oyo State can be helped. We shall be glad if the government looks into that proposal.

We appealed to our teachers that our children should not be used as weapons of destruction.”

Other leaders of the associations also called for understanding on the school management initiative. They urged the two parties  to come to a truce

Addressing the crowd, an elated Ajimobi explained that he was committed to his campaign promises. As a way of initiating a discussion process, he said the government invited labour as a stakeholder to the first meeting but that some labour leaders chose to disrupt the meeting in a violent way.

Ajimobi vowed to sustain his administration’s achievement on peace and emphasized that he would continue to encourage every democratic means of governing the state.

He blamed the opposition for sponsoring lies against him on the initiative and condemned teachers for setting children on the streets to start destroying public property.

His words: “When we campaigned, we made promises. We stand by those promises. Those sponsoring disharmony are the opposition elements. We promised to run an all-inclusive government. When we discovered that our schools were not doing well, we organized education summit in 2012 and certain recommendations were made. Democracy is about thinking together. Hence we invited all stakeholders to a meeting. But some labour leaders gathered and disrupted the meeting. The violence we had stamped out was what they brought back again and we won’t let that be.

“If anybody opposes any policy, you complain through proper channel.

Yet, we are not fighting with workers because they never supported those leaders who employed violence. Why should anyone fight over planned policies?

We have 631 secondary schools, 33,000 classrooms several thousands of students and teachers. Then, some people came and offered to collaborate with us. During past administrations, stakeholders came up to assist them. These labour leaders have schools and their children don’t attend public schools.

“But we are planning to revamp schools and you sent our children to start abusing the governor. The children are not their own children. Their own children were in their schools learning.

“With that behaviour, they are teaching the children to be hoodlums. They are teaching them not to honour elders. They are teaching them not to respect constituted authority. And they are teaching them how to lie. An end must come to misleading people with outright lies.

“After all these, we held a meeting with enlarged labour leaders. They saw that what their local leaders did was not good. And they apologized. So, we have forgiven them.

The initiative is yet to transform to a policy. We just asked everyone to come and dialogue. Most of our workers are good. Workers, we are not fighting with you.

“When they saw that the school management card did not work, they resorted to salary issue. But we already have an agreement on salaries.  Not only Oyo State is having this salary problem. When our finances were still good, we increased salaries thrice and that of pensioners. We paid 13th month for three years. We provided free buses, increased car and housing allowance, gave training allowances etc.

“When the problem of salaries started, I gave them three options. I came up with an option of payment that would see workers on the junior cadres receive their salaries while the balance of government income is used to pay part of senior workers’. But they rejected the idea. I offered the option of retrenchment, they rejected. Then I suggested payment of half salaries, they also rejected it.

“As at that time, salaries alone gulped 80 per cent of our federal allocation. I asked them what they wanted and they said they wanted 100 per cent of the federal allocation coming to the state to be committed to salaries alone. I consented. Now the entire allocation is insufficient. They are complaining. Let them come up and let’s dialogue to fashion the way forward.

“However, workers in the local government and primary school teachers are not affected. They are collecting their salaries. They are only owed one or two months.

“One of the reasons they are doing this again is because of the local government election that is coming. So, go and educate our people.

“But let everyone know that we won’t allow holligalism in Oyo State.  We shall also revamp Oyo State while thinking together. We won’t let labour alone control the entire state. Go and tell labour to come back for dialogue.

We are not fighting with workers. But we must realize that we are all stakeholders in this state. Let us dialogue. Nobody can intimidate us!”

    NLC ultimatum: Ajimobi dares workers

Following the industrial action threatened by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Oyo State chapter over five months unpaid worker’s salaries by the state government, Governor Abiola Ajimobi has disclosed that he is not disturbed by the threat, vowing that any workers that goes on strike will not be paid his salary.

He promised not to review the 90 per cent income that is dedicated for the payment of workers salary from Federation Account.

He said the call by the NLC to add the Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) with the 90 per cent income from the federal allocation to pay the workers’ salary will not be possible at the moment.

Ajimobi spoke on Monday at the stakeholders meeting between the state government, Chairman Caretaker committees of 33 council areas in the state and traditional rulers on the economic diversification project held at House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Ibadan.

The governor said: “It was agreed that about 90 per cent of income accruing from the State’s monthly allocation from the Federation Account should be dedicated to the workers while the remaining ten percent would be deployed to the running of other aspects of governance.”

He noted that till date, the state government has not reneged on the letter and spirit of that agreement, adding that the ultimatum issued by Labour is not only surprising but unnecessary and uncalled-for in the prevailing circumstance.

According to him, government cannot be paying only the 62,000 workers in the state with the money that ought to be used to maintain over 10 million citizens in the state.

“Modern day labour union and government relationship has listed steps that must be taking. Step one is that if you have any concern about anything, there is a joint negotiation committee that is made up of government and workers, you first go there to discuss with them and if after the discussion it does not work then you can go to the next level where the head of service and government will now appoint some people to discuss. It is when negotiations have broken down that labour can give notice of strike actions and not this old time labour government relationship where without discussing you will issue ultimatum to go on strike.

“It is illegal because this is a government where law must be followed and obeyed, not this culture of impunity. It is wrong to give an ultimatum to go on strike without reaching a consensus with the government. We have an agreement, there was a time we use to get close to N5 billion from federal government and our IGR was like N1 billion, now everybody is aware of the Nigeria situation, and now we are having N2 billion plus from federal government.”

He urged the labour leaders to sit down and negotiate with the government, vowing that worker that goes on strike without following due process will not be paid his or her salary.

Speaking on the need for agrarian revolution in the state, Ajimobi said the state is blessed with 28,544 kilometre per square of land, adding that the state has the most fertile land in Southern Nigeria.

He said:” The only way out of the present economic meltdown in the state is through agricultural revolution and that is why we need the support of the traditional rulers, local government chairmen and all the citizens of the state. We shall embark on massive mechanize farm in 28 local government areas with arable lands in the state.

In his remarks, the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji appealed to labour leaders not to embark on strike but should be considerate and embrace the condition of the state government.

“The economic situation in the country is not only affecting Oyo State but th country at large. This is why the governor is also going into economic diversification by venturing into agricultural revolution. We shall support him and it will be a success.

Similarly, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III also pledged his support for agricultural development in the state.

Oba Adeyemi also used the opportunity to appeal to labour leaders in the state to avoid industrial action that could lead to confrontation with the state government.

“The government has tried his best allocating 90 per cent of the federal allocation to pay the worker’s salary. The labour leaders only need to be patient and considerate,” he said.
