  • Airport upgrade: Hope rises for Edo agro-business

In a few months’ time, exporters of agricultural products in Edo State and its environs would not need to bother about delays in travelling to Lagos for the purpose of taking their products to any part of the world.

They would export their agro-products right from the Bénin Airport. Besides, businessmen, politicians and individuals can now land at the Bénin Airport any time of the day. This is because the airport has commenced night operations.

In 2013, during the inauguration of the remodeled Bénin Airport, former Governor Adams Oshiomhole requested the then Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah to ensure that the Airport operates in a 24-hour basis.

Oshiomhole had argued that the 24-hour operation for the airport would enable individuals, especially himself, meet emergency engagement in Abuja. He regretted that the Benin Airport being one of the oldest in the country remained the way it was despite the increase in traffic.

Oshiomhole’s successor, Godwin Obaseki has, however, seen to the realisation of his dream. Facilities in the 63-year-old Bénin Airport has been upgraded for it to carry out night operations. The equipment installed for the night operations were inaugurated last week by the Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika.

The equipment inaugurated at the Airport included thunder and lightning system, Secure Aviation Data Information System (SADIS); Enhanced Simple Approach Lightening System, CAT ll and Instrument Landing System (ILS)/Distance Measuring Equipment (DME).

Speaking at the inauguration, Senator Sirika said Edo people would gain a lot from the improved operational capability of the Bénin Airport because of the ability to come and go out of Bénin by air in reduced weather condition even when the pilot can barely see anything.

Senator Sirika further explained that the equipment are both ground-based and satellite-based. He said the satellite-based equipment would begin work if the ground-based ones failed.

He said: “The importance of the Benin culture and history is such that we cannot ignore. We will continue to upgrade facilities to meet its peers in other cities. The operational capacity of the Benin-City Airport has tremendously improved as we can now guarantee safe landing in reduced visibility and in bad weather condition. Aircraft can now land in Benin Airport at night. No more closure of the Airport by 6:00 p.m.

Aircraft can now land in Benin Airport at night. No more closure of the Airport by 6:00 p.m.

“When the country was divided into regions, the centrality of Benin is very important. Benin is the cradle of history, tradition and culture. There is connection between aviation, culture, commerce and others. We are intertwined and we hold Benin in high esteem. We will continue to promote this city, to enhance this city and make people come here. The more people come to Benin, the better for commerce.

“You have the Instrument Landing System which allows pilots to land in reduced weather. It is no longer pleasure to say from 6:00 p.m., you cannot land in Benin. We will continue to do more for Benin. We will site the agro-allied terminal at the Benin Airport. We are bringing cargo terminal for agro export. People involved in export of perishable items can send their goods to Europe very quickly. Obaseki has promised to participate in putting the structure for the facility in place.

“Airplane owners must improve their aircraft. They have to train their pilots. If their pilots are not trained, they cannot come here.”

On his part, an elated Governor Obaseki said the Bénin Airport could now compete with its peers across the world with the installation of the equipment and commencement of night landing facilities. He noted that people would have no excuse not to come to Bénin again whether at night on the excuses of bad weather.

He said, “Edo is a hub. We are a transportation hub. Benin Airport is one of the top five airports in Nigeria in terms of passenger traffic. We do not want to wait for the Federal Government alone to provide all that are needed.. So, we have to put in our resources to support them to ensure that they are attracted to make investment in our airport. With the night landing facility put in place, we shall now persuade airlines to make night stops in Benin. That way, they bring traffic into our state.

“We are inaugurating an array of things at the Airport. The benefits of all these facilities are limitless. What the cargo terminal means is that we can export our produce from here to all over the world.

“For you to have economic growth, you must have infrastructure. People must be able to come in and go out. Money must come in and leave freely. This air transportation infrastructure will just complement our other efforts in area of tourism, agriculture, infrastructure even education. What it means is that there will be no excuse. It will help business once people know they can get in and out of Benin at any time.

“We are not just unveiling a new technology for our airport; we are celebrating a very unique privilege and honour for a state to collaborate very closely with the Federal Government agency. The Benin Airport built in 1956 is being upgraded so that it can be ranked as an airport that could match any airport in the world by equipping it with the instrument every airport should have.

    Buhari commissions Edo five-star hospital

President Mohammadu Buhari on Monday inaugurated the new five-star Central Hospital built by Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

The Benin Central hospital was first built in 1902 with only 10 beds.

President Buhari who is in the state for a two days official working visit said it is his third time of visiting the state to commission projects.

Buhari noted that the hospital is the best legacy Governor Oshiomhole would be bequeathing to the people of the state.

He said he was impressed with the hospital project as according to him, “it takes a lot of courage for the Governor to do what he did.”

“I am impressed with the work. This is the best thing Oshiomhole can do for the people. When I was coming, I asked the governor, “Whose edifice is this?”

President Buhari stated that many elite would prefer to build a more comfortable environment for themselves but Oshiomhole opted to build a hospital that would benefit the people.

Governor Oshiomhole in his remark said the only way to show equality among men was for government to provide facilities for both the rich and the poor.

Oshiomhole noted that successive administration had patched the central hospital but he decided to build the hospital instead of erecting a new government house.

He noted the hospital was built following his conviction that public health care facilities should not be inferior to private health facilities.

According to him, “I almost wept when I first visited this hospital. What I found here was shocking and I concluded that even if a healthy man visited the hospital, the healthy would be admitted the next day.”

“This hospital is fitted with the latest technology in health care delivery. This hospital will not be run as public service.

“We will make that efforts to work are rewarded and not for those that want to embark on strike.”

President Buhari is expected to commission the Upper Siluko road and the new Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia College.

  • Survey places Obaseki in good position to win election

Survey places Obaseki in good position to win election

An independent survey conducted by Lakewhyte Communications Limited has said that governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Godwin Obaseki, is in a good position to win Wednesday election.

The survey said Obaseki has been rated higher based on his antecedents and based on the fact that Governor Adams Oshiomhole had performed well.

It said from the 10,000 prospective voters sampled in the survey, 64.32 percent promised to vote for Obaseki while 34.92 percent said they would vote for Ize-Iyamu.

According to the report, “On the question of Better Knowledge of Governance and capacity to deliver on promises, 6,217 of the respondents (62.17 percent) preffered Godwin Obaseki of APC, while only 3,701 (37.01 percent) opted for Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of PDP. A total of 82 number of responses were invalid.

“They responded to the second question in almost the same manner. Asked who they would vote for, 6,432 (64.32 percent) pledged their votes would go for Obaseki, while 3,401 (34.01 percent) responded in favour of Ize-Iyamu of PDP.

“If this trend pans out, and all things being equal, it will mean that the APC candidate, Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, will likely win the governorship election with a margin of about 30 percent over his rival.

This Survey also examines the two Candidates’ areas of Strengths and Weaknesses and tries to determine who would likey have an edge in the scheduled poll.

“Obaseki’s strengths are in five critical areas: (1) Being a member of the party in power at the federal level. This could be an advantage as people of the state would want to vote for APC to be able to enjoy benefits that may accrue from that level of government. (2) Unity of purpose by his party members in the state. Obaseki has the full support and backing of APC members in and outside the state.

“Even those who lost the party primaries have all joined forces to ensure the party’s victory at the poll.  This was the result of the reconciliatory efforts he and Governor Adams Oshiomhole made to appease aggrieved members. (3) APC’s clear and practicable manifesto. This is another attraction which his party commands and which will likely work in Obaseki’s favour on Wednesday.

“The Oshiomhole factor is unputdownable. He is an enigma in the Edo political equation. Although his achievements in the past eight years can easily speak for themselves, the Governor has used every opportunity available to recount them and market them to the people. He told the people that all they needed was a tested successor to continue in the same stead.

“Obaseki will likely enjoy tremendous geo-political advantage. Edo State seats on a tripod. Edo South senatorial district has 58 per cent of the voting population; Edo Central has 16 per cent, and Edo North has 26 per cent of voters in the state. Incidentally, the zone where PDP commands a seemingly huge popularity is the Central zone, where it has the likes of Chief Anthony Anenih, Chief Tom Ikimi, Mike Onolemenme, Senator Clifford Odia, Senator Odion Ugbesia and others with the exclusion of former governor and senator, Prof. Osunbor as well as the Igbinedions.

“The people of Edo North, with 26 per cent of voters, will likely cast almost 100 per cent for Obaseki because of the Oshiomhole factor and the area where his Deputy hails from. It would be recalled that recently, Traditional rulers of all the three zones pledged their support for Obaseki and his Deputy, Phillip Shaibu.

“They hinged their support on the fact that Oshiomhole had performed exceedingly well compared to others in the last 16 years of democracy and of the need to support Obaseki, who is also part of the Oshimhhole success story, rather than voting for someone who was part of what some have described as the dark days of development in the state.

“Added to this is the fact that Edo State has 18 local government areas with 24 seats in the House of Assembly. Of this number, PDP has only three constituency seats, while APC has 21 seats, a situation that will make it extremely difficult for the table to turn in favour of PDP, as members of the Edo State House of Assembly would also defend their turf electorally.

“Weakness: The only known weakness of Obaseki is the perception that he is a stooge of Governor Oshiomhole. Being an expert in economic management, some believe that he would likely  emphasise higher taxation in a bid to generate more income for the state it stated.

“While Ize-Iyamu’ Strengths lies on the fact that he is a formidable politician who also knows the party he is contesting against – APC – inside-out. His strength in the Wednesday election rests mainly on his political sagacity. Generally, his campaign messages seem not as credible as his opponent’s as they are centered mainly on tackling the APC’s perceived failures without proffering credible solutions.

“His Weakness: Many unresolved issues appear to be working against Ize-Iyamu’s chances in the forthcoming election. Three of them are notable: (1) Credibility question. He is widely perceived as a representation of the Igbinedion legacy of non-performance and corruption.

“He occupied at the time, two strategic positions, as Chief of Staff, and Secretary to the State Government. In addition, he was alleged to have been the one that signed most of the fictitious multi-billion naira contracts in that administration, which were never executed.

“The factionalisation of PDP at the national level, which has rubbed off on the party in the state. Although INEC has recognised him as the candidate of the party, others who contested with him in the primaries have largely deserted him including many notable PDP politicians from his zone and beyond. His supporters are mainly from Edo Central district that may not be able to win the election for him because of population disadvantage.

“As can be seen, even the above SWOT Analysis conducted favours the same trend of thought expressed by potential voters above. In other words, that the APC candidate has higher chances of clinching the Governorship seat than his PDP counterpart,” it stated.

  • PDP to NBA, others: Call Oshiomhole to order

PDP to NBA, others: Call Oshiomhole to order

The People’s Democratic Party in Edo State has urged the Nigeria Bar Association and the international community to call Governor Adams Oshiomhole to order.

It said the will of Edo people should be allowed to be freely expressed and the outcome of Wednesday governorship election accepted by all.

The PDP also call on all promoters of democracy to impress on the federal government to direct all organs responsible for the conduct of the Edo election to ensure that the election is not compromised directly or indirectly, before, during and after.

A letter to the President of NBA and copied to several international organizations, the PDP urged the federal government to demonstrate good sportsmanship, having recently been a beneficiary of an election conducted by an incumbent administration.

The letter signed by State Publicity Secretary of the party, Chris Nehikhare accused Oshiomhole of deploying the police, the Attorney-General’s Office, and the State Revenue Service to harass, arrest and persecution of leaders of the PDP.

Nehikhare alleged that Oshiomhole opted to deploy the state agencies having realized that it had not perfected its plan to rig against its governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

He said the state government has dragged the State PDP to court over non-payment of tax by staff of the PDP Secretariat.

His words, “The State Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, who apparently is the prime target of the litigation is mentioned as the defendant. The APC led government wants Chief Orbih remanded in prison custody during the remaining period of the campaign and on Election Day.

“We see the disingenuous attack on Chief Orbih as a calculated attempt to throw the PDP in disarray and to manipulate the minds of our teeming supporters who are in the majority among the Edo electorate. We know that this resort is an exercise in futility.

“The grand design of the APC is to subvert the will of the people and if this is not checked it may spell grave consequences for the state.”
