Ambode: A humanist and pragmatist at 53

During the thick of the governorship campaign in 2015, the then candidate of All Progressive Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, came out with an instructive advert: Let my experience work for you. In the said advert, which was placed in major national dailies, Ambode explicitly came out with his intimidating credentials and the experience he gathered during his years in the Civil Service, when he left Alausa and went back to school in the United States and came back home to become a public finance expert.

It was therefore not a surprise that few days to his first anniversary as the Governor of Lagos State, some notable members of the National Assembly from the state, placed a centre-spread advert in the dailies to remind the electorate that they made the right choice by voting for Ambode. In the advert that was rightly captioned: ‘We say thank you Lagosians, his experience is working for you’, the lawmakers enumerated the giant strides the state has recorded in the past year, and that despite the economic uncertainty in the country, the state under the leadership of Ambode, is on a sound footing for growth and development.

In truth, for some of us working with him at close range, it’s not too difficult to see the humanity, simplicity, compassion, pragmatism, discipline and courage in him. When we were disturbed few months after he came to power with negative media reports and slow pace of governance, the governor would always remind us that we are on a marathon race and not a sprint; he would tell us that it has always been his nature to be underrated. “Just wait and see”, he would say with a smile. And while it has been difficult to keep pace with him, we find solace in what the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu said of the governor during the launch of the BRT buses last year: “Ambode does not believe there is no solution to a problem; he believes there is always a solution to every problem”.

Hence, the unprecedented achievements of the past 12 months should be seen within this context. Here is a man who rose to become the Auditor General and then the first civil servant to hold the positions of both the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance and the state Accountant General. Needless to say that he had variously been credited with successfully managing the account of the state when the then President, Chief Olusegun Obasango withheld the state Local Government funds.

For sure, it is this spirit of doggedness and consistency that the governor brought to bear in the way and manner he has piloted the affairs of the state in the last one year. At every critical juncture of the journey, you always have this belief that you are working with a man who knows where he is heading; a man who listens and is very meticulous in everything he does; a man who is concern about every details of what you do and say on his behalf; a man who believes the Lagos city-state should rank among the best in the world; a man who understands the transient of power and above all, a man whose love for the STATE of EXCELLENCE is unrivalled and whose passion for his job is unmistakable. Indeed, you will always win a seat on the table with Governor Ambode if you have superior argument on any issue.

But despite all he has done so far, the governor has served notice of something even more remarkable and iconic. His administration is about to convert Oshodi into what he calls “world-class transportation and commercial hub.” The more challenging term he used is “regeneration of Oshodi.” The area would witness the consolidation of all the 13 parks into three multi-storey bus parks and terminals to stand on four floors. There would be shopping mall, recreation points, bus lanes, lay-bys, green parks to soften the environment, proper waste management, fencing and – wait for this – a dedicated fully kitted security team for Oshodi.

Apart from this, the administration has restructured the civil service for maximum voltage performance, while creating new offices to cater for the emerging needs of the people. He has cut the cost of governance by streamlining some ministries, departments and agencies. Ambode injected compassion into governance, paying N11bn to aged pensioners who had been owed for decades. He has personally attended to the distressed, the indigent and the severely handicapped. Recently he celebrated Democracy Day with the less privileged and persons with disabilities.

This compassionate governance philosophy has seen Ambode launch an unprecedented move to allay the security concerns of the citizens when within six months, he gave more than N6.6bn to equip the Police and other security agencies with armored tanks, brand new power bikes and scores of squad cars for Special Operation Services (SOS) for community policing. He has also launched an aerial policing of Lagos by donating three helicopters to the Nigeria Police Command in the state.
He further launched a world class rescue operation unit, the first of its kind in Nigeria.

Closely knit to these is a radical road infrastructure development leading to the construction and renovation of more than 500 roads in the state and 114 link roads in all the local councils and the Light-up Lagos Project meant to banish darkness from every corner of the state.

In a pragmatic approach to massively reduce unemployment and empower fresh graduates, artisans and the youths, the governor launched the N25bn Employment Trust Fund (ETF) to ensure capital for start-up of small scale businesses with very minimal interest rate and also signed MoU with Kebbi State to ensure self sufficiency in food production thereby drastically reducing importation of rice and other food items. This will equally boost Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

And just before the first anniversary, Ambode again did what many considered an uphill task with the signing of an N844bn Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to construct the Fourth Mainland Bridge. The bridge that is expected to be completed between three and four years, would go a long way in changing the transportation system in the state. Instructively too, these achievements are anchored on the core pillar of his manifesto, which is Security, Infrastructure and Youth Empowerment.

As you clock 53 today, the people are felicitating with you and wishing you well as you churn out more of your great signature projects.

    Happy birthday sir!

Aruna is the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ambode.

Ambode orders repair of failed portions of Oshodi-Apapa expressway

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Friday expressed dissatisfaction at the deplorable state of some sections of Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, saying the road was too strategic to the economy of the State and therefore cannot be ignored.

Governor Ambode, who made an unscheduled inspection tour of the road while returning from the grand opening of a 70, 000 capacity Motorbikes Assembly Plant in Mile 2, directed the State’s Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and other relevant government agencies to immediately move to site and fix the bad portions of the road.

A visibly worried Governor Ambode had stopped his convoy and came down from his vehicles to inspect the bad portions of the road alongside top government officials who accompanied him.

The Governor specifically inspected the bad portions of the road between Berlett and Ilasa, and Cele Bus stop inward Oshodi.

    • Presents certificates to 400 trained Traditional Birth Attendants

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, on Thursday presented certificates of participation in orientation course to 400 Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) in the State, just as he expressed optimism that they would contribute to the State Government’s effort to reduce maternal mortality rate.

Speaking at the certificate presentation ceremony of the TBAs held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa Secretariat, Governor Ambode said that one of the cardinal points of his administration was to make traditional birth attendants a relevant factor in child care delivery, hence the urgent need to improve the skill of the traditional health attendants to reduce maternal mortality.

Governor Ambode said Lagos already has a functional Traditional Medicine Board that has strategic programs that are targeted towards regulating, monitoring, promoting and integrating traditional medicine into health policy based on the Alma Alta Declaration of W.H.O. 1978.

He said the intention of his administration is geared towards streamlining traditional medicine so as to change the perception of traditional medicine as a religious and spirit-magical practice by virtue of their proximity and accessibility to the rural dwellers.

“Traditional Birth Attendants are part of the birthing process all over the world. They remain the preferred service providers for delivery in rural communities over the formal health facilities. They are usually self-taught or informally trained.

“Pregnancy which should be a thing of joy is now seen as death warrant for most women due to the weak Primary Health Care system. Despite the provision of health services through Primary Health Centres, many still patronize Traditional Birth Attendants.  This shows the level of trust people repose in them and of course their relevance in Primary Healthcare delivery,” he said.

He said the training of the TBAs covered several areas including protecting the health of mother and baby, care of women during pregnancy and child birth, treatment of complications due to miscarriage and or unsafe abortion, pre-pregnancy advice and health education, care of new born, among others.

To this end, Governor Ambode said his administration would continue to do all within its powers to take traditional medicine to a higher level through innovative research and development, just as he assured that Government would continue to strengthen its efforts in the areas of Regulation, Training, Coordination, Monitoring and Supervision of practice of Traditional Medicine towards effective integration with orthodox medicine.

He however urged the TBAs to discharge their duties professionally according to the ethics guiding their profession, urging them to continue to improve their practice through continued education and scientific development.

The Governor also seized the occasion to restate the commitment of his administration to provide efficient healthcare to all Lagosians, at all levels by ensuring that the General Hospitals and Primary Healthcare Centres are well equipped and fully operational.

“We have recently signed off on the Ultra Modern, World Class Medical Park which will ensure our citizens no longer have to seek medical care abroad. Our own specialized baby home, the Ayinke House Maternity is being upgraded and rehabilitated and I have been assured that the project will be delivered by the end of this year,” he said.

Earlier, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Health, Dr. Olufemi Onanuga, said the State Government is committed towards giving residents the best as far as healthcare delivery is concerned, adding that the Governor’s passion about the people of the State is responsible for his resolve to ensure access to quality and affordable health care delivery.

The lawmakers equally called on President Muhammadu Buhari to arrange for the refund of all monies the state has spent maintaining federal roads in the state.

Agunbiade (Ikorodu I) said that the step has become imperative considering the disaster delay could bring to residents and economic activities in the area.

He said, “The road is in a very terrible condition, it connects Ikorodu to Sagamu. It is so damaged that unless care is taken, it can lead to losses of lives.

“Our people cannot wait for the Federal Government to fix the road. We want to call on the governor to direct all relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the state to help do palliative on this road.

Hon. Tunde Braimoh (Kosofe 2) said that there was need for urgent intervention by the state government, stressing that the road was germane to the economic activities of the state.

The lawmaker added that the state government needed to give attention to the road at the entrance to Magodo Estate also.

Hon. Nurudeen Saka-Solaja ( Ikorodu II), who noted that about 45 industries are located along the corridor, said that the busy road has been abandoned for long.

Also speaking, Hon. Lanre Ogunyemi, the Chairman, House Committee on Education urged the industries along the corridor to wake up to their corporate responsibility.

Hon. Abiodun Tobun, the Chairman, House Committee on Works and Infrastructure said, “Most of the federal roads in Lagos are suffering and the paucity of fund cannot allow the state to fix all of them.”

The Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, who noted that the poor state of most roads has led to the loss of several lives, urged the state to do something urgently.

Obasa said that the state government has spent billions of naira managing federal roads, stressing that most of the fund expended had not been refunded by the Federal Government.

“We will continue to call on the Federal Government to do the needful, we cannot close our eyes on all these roads,” the speaker said.

He urged FERMA to carry out repair on all failed federal roads in the state.

  • DSS arraigns two artisans for cloning Ambode’s phone number

The Department of State Security (DSS) Wednesday arraigned two artisans before an Isolo Magistrate Court for allegedly cloning the mobile line of Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode.

The suspects – Rilwanu Jamiu and Balogun Stanley Oyewole, who claimed to be a cocoa dealer, were said to have attempted to perfect a N50 million transfer with the said mobile line.

Prosecuting counsel from the DSS, Mr. Peter Okerinmodun told Chief Magistrate Adeola Adedayo that the suspects were arrested after using the cloned mobile line of the Governor to send a text message to the Accountant General of the State requesting for transfer of N50 million.

He said the suspects conspired with others now at large to commit the crime on February 10, 2016 at about 10:02hours.

Count one read: “That you Rilwanu Jamiu (M) of No 10, Giwa Street, Oka Akoko Street, Lagos and Balogun Stanley Oyewole (M) of No 65, Unity Street, Ikotun, Lagos and others at large on 10th February, 2016 about 1002hours at Lagos within Lagos Magisterial District, conspired to commit felony to wit: obtaining by false pretence and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 312 (2) and (3) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.”

Count two read: “That you Rilwanu Jamiu, Balogun Stanley Oyewole of the above addresses, and others at large, on above date, time and place fraudulently cloned the Glo line of His Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, with intent to induce him by false pretence and used the Glo line to send a text message for the transfer of a sum of fifty million Naira (N50m) and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 312 (2) and (3) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.”

After the charges were read to the accused persons, they pleaded not guilty, while the prosecutor asked that they should be kept in protective custody pending the outcome of the legal advice of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) in view of the fact that their lives could be endangered by other suspects who are on the run.

But Magistrate Adedayo overruled Okerinmodun, saying the DSS ought to have kept them in custody judging by the fact that their lives could be in danger.

She said since the offence for which the accused persons were charged to court was bailable and the fact that the Magistrate Court is a court of summary trial, she was inclined to grant bail to the accused persons.

She, therefore, admitted them to bail in the sum of N1 million each and two sureties in like sum.

Magistrate Adedayo ruled that one of the sureties must be a religious or community leader within the jurisdiction of the court, and that the accused persons must provide five years tax clearance certificates.

She further ordered the accused persons to be remanded in Kirikiri Prison pending the perfection of the conditions attached to their bail, and adjourned the matter to May 10.

Ambode orders repair of Lagos-Badagry expressway

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has ordered the state Public Works Corporation to embark on immediate and extensive repair of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway to ensure free traffic.

The General Manager and Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Works, Mr Ayotunde Sodeinde, told newsmen in Lagos on Thursday that the corporation had already mobilised its workers to site.

Sodeinde said that the repairs would include covering of all potholes on the road and giving the drainage systems would a facelift.

He listed the areas earmarked for repairs to include Iyana Ishasi, Ribamu Bus Stop, Ketu Bus Stop – Cele Nica, FGC Ijanikan – Iyana Era and ACOED pedestrian bridge – Alafia Bus Stop.
Others include former toll gate – Ibiye/Morogbo, Pure Water Bus Stop – Magbon, Ile-Epo Bus Stop – Oko Afo Outward Badagry.

Also on the list are Mowo Bus Stop – Elijah Araromi Bridge, Limca Bus Stop – Mosafejo (both sides), French Village – Low Cost Housing Scheme and Ibereko.

According to Sodeinde, the repairs on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway are in line with the mandate of the present administration to ensure zero tolerance of potholes.

He expressed optimism that when the rehabilitation was completed, it would, to a large extent, reduce traffic congestion on the road.

Sodeinde pledged that the Public Works team would work day and night on the road to meet the deadline.

“You know that when the roads are good, it means economic growth; people will be able to move from one part of the state to another to transport their goods without stress.

“It will also reduce crime rate on the roads as hoodlums and pickpockets thrive when there is gridlock.

“We are on our feet to ensure that we put the road in order to reduce the traffic on the road,” Sodeinde said.
