    Wamakko pardons detained ruler, inmates

detained traditional ruler, Alhaji Suleiman Kurdulla and nine other prison inmates celebrated Sallah with their families after their release from the Sokoto State Central Prisons following an unconditional state pardon by Governor Aliyu Wamakko.

Suleiman was, in 2005, removed as Village Head of Kurdulla in Gudu Local Government Area of the state and thereafter detained.

Four of the freed convicted inmates were females.

The inmates got the unconditional pardon after a brief ceremony presided over by the state Justice Commissioner, Alhaji Nuhu Adamu on behalf of Governor Wamakko.

The Commissioner said the gesture was in line with the powers conferred on Wamakko by section 212 of the 1999 constitution as amended.

Adamu explained that seven out of the freed inmates were convicted of crimes while two were awaiting trial.

Also, Adamu announced the donation of N30,000 to each of the seven freed inmates, courtesy of the state government.

“The gesture is part of the efforts of the state government to further decongest the prison. It is always being extended during ceremonies like Sallah and Nigeria’s independence anniversary.

“This is a holy month of Ramadan and the state government decided to extend the same gesture to commemorate the Eid-el-Fitr,” he said.

He spoke further: “The tenth beneficiary of the gesture was Alhaji Suleiman Kurdulla who was dethroned by the state government in 2005 and he petitioned the present administration which had a second look at his case.

“The state committee on the prerogative of mercy recommended his unconditional pardon after concluding that his petition had merits and Governor Wamakko approved it.”

The state Controller of Prisons Hajiya Hawwa’u Shettima commended the state government for donating two 18-seater buses to the prison.

She added: “We have to also commend the state government for establishing a Ramadan feeding centre at the prison during the Ramadan fast.

“This laudable gesture would go along way in further decongesting the prison. As at now, over 70 per cent of the inmates in the prison are awaiting trial.”

She also cautioned he benefiting inmates to shun all acts capable of bringing them back to the prison.

A spokesman of the freed inmates, Habibu Usman thanked the state government for the gesture, promising to be of good behaviour.

The gesture brought relief to the families and friends of the ertswhile inmates.
