    Bauchi Governor Bala to deliver third Jakande annual lecture July 23

    Governors, top government officials, eminent citizens, and media chiefs have confirmed they will attend the third Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE

    The NGE instituted the annual lecture in honour of the former Lagos State governor, who was a renowned journalist and newspaper administrator before he joined politics.

    This year’s edition of the lecture will be held on Wednesday, July 23, at Edmark D’Podium International Event Center, 31 Aromire Road by Adeniyi Jones Road, Ikeja, Lagos, at 10 a.m.

    A statement by the NGE President, Eze Anaba, and the Secretary General, Onuoha Ukeh, said Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed will deliver the lecture with the theme: Journalism and the Challenges of Nation-Building in a Multi-Ethnic Society.

     Lagos State governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his Akwa Ibom State counterpart, Pastor Umo Eno, will be the special guests of honour.

    The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mallam Mohammed Idris, will be the guest of honour, with the Founder of United Nigeria Airlines, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, and the Chairman of Air Peace Airlines, Dr. Allen Onyema, will also be special guests.

    Media chiefs expected to attend the lecture include a former Special Adviser to the late President on Media and Publicity, Chief Femi Adesina; Managing Director of Punch Newspapers, Joseph Adeyeye; Director of News, Television Continental (TVC), Stella Din-Jacobs; and a former Osun Stae Commissioner of Information, Mrs. Funke Egbemode, who will serve as discussants to the main paper.

    The statement added that proprietors, managing directors, editors-in-chief, and editors of Nigerian newspapers will also attend the lecture.

    The Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture series aims to celebrate the late Alhaji Jakande’s remarkable contributions to journalism, public service, and governance. His legacy serves as a model for future generations.

    “We are proud to continue this tradition,” the statement said.

    The lecture series began in 2023 with a paper delivered by a Fellow of NGE, Chief Felix Adenaike, and continued in 2024 when the Chairman of ThisDay/Arise TV, Prince Nduka Obaigbena, delivered the lecture, titled: Rapidly Changing Media Landscape: Survival Strategies.

    The NGE said the lecture will be “another insightful discussion on the challenges and opportunities in nation-building through journalism”.
