“We are endowed as a state and we pride ourselves as one of the leading oil palm production states in Nigeria, where investors are showing significant interest. You will recall that one of the workshops we had on agriculture emphasised the need for an Oil Palm Road Map, which we have been working on,” the governor said.

He explained that in the state, oil palm is prolific in Ovia, Orhionmwon and Uhunmwode local government areas, and stressed that Edo State has in excess of 500,000 hectares of land available.

“We are aware of the activities of land grabbers but as a government, we have set up a committee that is currently reviewing the trends in land allocation in the state and will address the issue.”

Mr. Ibru congratulated the governor on his victories on many fronts in the course of ascending the position of governor of the state.

He said POFON members own the majority of privately-owned oil palm and rubber plantations in Nigeria including those situated within Edo State.

He explained that their goal is to protect the existing investments of members and attract new investors into the country.

Obaseki disclosed this when he received the publishers of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung of Germany, a Frankfurt General Newspaper, working on a documentary to drum support for the return of the looted Benin artefacts, at Government House in Benin City on Monday.

He described the stolen artefacts as the cultural and social symbols of the Benin people and assured that the partnership with the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) and the Benin Palace to secure the return of the artefacts will yield the desired result.

“We want our property back and the artefacts represent our culture and social system, our history and political structure,” he said, and added that his administration was working on a tourism masterplan to boost tourism development in the state.

  • Obaseki seeks National Policy on capacity building for Judicial workers

Obaseki seeks National Policy on capacity building for Judicial workers

The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has made a strong case for the enhancement of judicial workers’ capacity in the National Policy on Justice 2017, which is currently being reviewed.

According to Obaseki, this will address the capacity challenge faced by operators in the judicial system with consequent impact on the rights of Nigerian citizens, and law and order.

Obaseki made the case while declaring open a two-day National Sensitisation Workshop on the National Policy on Justice in Benin City, on Monday.

He said, “The policy should address the issues of sound structures and processes for the judicial system; the need to improve capacities of judicial operators, and put into consideration the role of alternative dispute system in the country to protect the rights of citizens.”

The governor said that the implementation of a National Policy on justice is apt as the Nigerian Justice System needs to be reformed.

“Our administrative justice system craves for reforms. There is need to restore absolute confidence in our justice sector. There are still doubts about the Nigerian judiciary system being the hope of the common man, we are hoping that all the identified challenges in the judicial system would be addressed in the policy, to make for efficient justice delivery in the country.

Obaseki noted that his administration has already embarked on the implementation of the action plan to improve justice delivery system in the state.

He said the state government has cued into the initiative of the National Security Adviser on prison reform and plans to decongest the prison by 50 percent in March next year.

He said that part of the reform includes the appointment of more judges to facilitate speedy trial, invest in technologies to improve record keeping in the courts and the construction of an ultra-modern court complex equipped with digital recording system.

Earlier in his address, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami represented by the Solicitor General of the Federation, Dayo Akpata, said the National Policy on Justice was necessitated by the absence of a policy framework to foster collaboration among stakeholders in the system.

He said it is also in line with effort of the federal government to strengthen the justice delivery system to make it potent for the fight against corruption and protection of human right.  He added that the policy will be examined and reviewed through various inputs from participants.

The Zonal National Sensitisation Workshop on the National Policy on Justice is organised under the Theme, “Reforming the Justice System For National Development.”

  • World Savings Day: Obaseki tasks financial institutions on unbanked population

World Savings Day: Obaseki tasks financial institutions on unbanked population

The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has challenged financial institutions across the world to design products that will appeal to the millions of the world’s unbanked population to boost liquidity in the banks and safeguard the future of savings account holders.

Obaseki made the call on Monday, in commemoration of the World Savings Day, marked on October 31, every year.

He also assured that the long-term goal of Alaghodaro as envisioned by his administration will address the several challenges of urbanisation in the state’s urban centers.

The governor’s assurance is on the commemoration of the World Cities Day, which is also marked on October 31, each year.

According to the governor, “the complex processes involved in opening savings account, the cold reception given to the fairly literate and non-literate customers, and the lack of adequate incentives for savings culture among other factors discourage many people from taking their money to the bank.”

He stressed that “banking need not be elitist or flamboyant, especially in developing economies and advised bankers to be more creative in reaching out to the unbanked population, most of them in rural and peri-urban areas, and speak to them in languages they understand to win their confidence to save their earnings.”

Obaseki further said that this year’s theme: “Our Future Starts with Savings” is apt and added that “A good saving culture is healthy for financial institutions, the economy as well as the account holders. He explained that people who save money in banks support the growth of the economy and secure their hard earned money from being lost to fire or theft.

“Stories abound of people who have lost their money to thieves, fire incident or flooding because they kept their money under their pillows at home. Money kept at home cannot yield interests and the culture of keeping money at home exposes people to all forms of risk.”

On the World Cities Day, the governor said several programmes had been lined up to transform Benin City and other urban centers in the state to world-class cities.

“The revamped Edo State Traffic Management Agency, Edo City Transport Service, the sanitisation of major bus stops and the city center/ Ring Road, the Clean And Green project, the repositioning of the state Ministry of Physical Planning Urban Development as well as the Edo Development Property Authority (EDPA),  are some steps we have taken to address some of the urbanisation challenges we have in the state.”

He maintained that the theme for this year’s World Cities Day celebration, “Innovative Governance, Open Cities” is a call to governments to strengthen institutions that support the growth of cities, namely; world-class superstructure that guarantee the security of life and property, ease of conducting social and commercial activities and happiness amongst others.

The World Savings Day was established on October 31, 1924, during the 1st International Savings Bank Congress (World Society of Savings Banks) in Milano, Italy. The Italian Professor Filippo Ravizza declared this day the “International Saving Day” on the last day of the congress. In the resolutions of the Thrift Congress it was decided that ‘World Thrift Day’ should be a day devoted to the promotion of savings all over the World. In their efforts to promote thrift the savings banks also worked with the support of the schools, the clergy, as well as cultural, sports, professional, and women’s associations.

The United Nations General Assembly designated the 31st of October as World Cities Day, by its resolution 68/239. The Day is expected to greatly promote the international community’s interest in global urbanisation, push forward cooperation among countries in meeting opportunities and addressing challenges of urbanisation, and contributing to sustainable urban development around the world.

  •  Build lasting structures to sustain creative industry’s gains – Obaseki

Build lasting structures to sustain creative industry’s gains – Obaseki

The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has lauded the tenacity and ingenuity of Nigerians for sustaining efforts that gave rise to the country’s creative industry such as the entertainment industry and allied businesses which serve not only to document Nigeria’s culture but also to boost economic activities.

The governor said this on the occasion of the World Day for Audio- Visual Heritage, marked globally every October 26 by the United Nations Education and Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Obaseki said that much as the creative industry, such as Nollywood and the music industry, have grown from little beginnings to eventually becoming a global phenomenon, there was need for governments, practitioners and investors to synergise and build solid structures to prevent the successes recorded from eroding.

According to Obaseki, “On the occasion of this day, it is imperative to acknowledge the immense work that went into creating Nollywood and Nigeria’s music industry. Much as they didn’t get required support from government in the early days, the owners of the vision went about their activities.

“Hence, it is imperative for all stakeholders to come together to ensure that sustainable structures are built to ensure that the legacy of our times is not only preserved but that they reflect the full gamut of our experiences.”

Noting that this year’s theme for the celebration, “Discover, remember and share” is apt and drives home the message for the people to document their experiences, he added that the efforts of creative industries have ensured that Nigeria escapes from the dangers of the single story, which has prevailed for a long time.

He added that the development of media content as part of offshoots of the documenting experience has created opportunities for employment for young people, but cautioned against abuse of the opportunities it afforded.

He tasked practitioners to prioritise documentation of histories and lives that enrich the human experience, adding, “The place of history cannot be underestimated and we urge practitioners to help develop a body of work that would not only tell what ails us today but also direct future generations.”

The General Conference of UNESCO approved the commemoration of a World Day for Audiovisual Heritage in 2005. It is a mechanism to raise general awareness of the need to preserve and safeguard important audiovisual material for future generations, and for urgent measures to be taken to conserve this heritage and ensure it remains accessible to the public now, and to future generations.

Obaseki receives new Police Commissioner, assures of new security architecture

The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Wednesday received the new Commissioner of Police of the state command, Johnson Babatunde Kokumo, at the Government House in Benin City, with an assurance that he would work with the new police boss to enforce a new security architecture in the state.

Obaseki further pledged his administration’s support for the new police commissioner to enable him succeed in his new assignment.

“We will give you the needed support to succeed. We believe that the responsibility for restoring law and order rests with the police. We hope that you will fulfill your constitutional responsibility by helping us enforce law and order in Edo State,” he said.

The governor urged the new police boss to urgently change the security plan he inherited to curb crimes in the state.

“We need to change the entire security architecture in the state and together we will work to implement it and address all the security challenges in the next one week,” he said.

The governor thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for his prompt response in granting the request for a new police commissioner by deploying a grounded operations police officer to serve in the state.

“We believe the new CP has the requisite experience to help in   securing life and property in the state. We believe this is what he has been doing in his policing career and has the ability to replicate what he did in other states here in Edo. We will give him our support to help him succeed in fighting crime in the state,” Obaseki assured.

In his response, the new CP advised criminals to relocate from Edo State as it will no longer be a haven for their activities. “I want to assure you that Edo State will no longer be a haven for criminals. I advise them to leave the state. Edo people and residents of the state should go to sleep with both eyes closed because there will be proper policing both in the day and at night,” the new CP said.

He explained that he is currently doing criminal profiling in the state and in a matter of days will come out with a clear strategy aimed at fighting crimes in the state.
