Governor Oyebanji: my administration has positively impacted Ekiti communities

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, has declared that his administration has positively touched every community in the state through impactful projects and programmes.

The governor said his administration’s achievements had reached all parts of the state, noting that no community had been left behind in the shared prosperity agenda.

Speaking in Ise-Ekiti, during a Town Hall Meeting and Citizens’ Engagement in the Ekiti South Senatorial District, Oyebanji attributed the success recorded by his administration to the cooperation and support he has enjoyed with all federal lawmakers and members of the State House of Assembly whom he said share the same vision to lift Ekiti to higher heights with him.

At the meeting, all the requests of the communities in the six council areas in the senatorial district- Ekiti Southwest, Ikere, Ekiti East, Ise/Orun, Emure, Ayekire were and Ekiti East- were presented by their representatives which the Governor promised to look into and ensure the incorporation of the critical ones into the 2026 Budget.

The requests tabled before the governor for consideration ahead of the 2026 budget preparation include rehabilitation of township roads, extension of power supply to developing areas, procurement of transformers, and provision of potable water.

Others are the rehabilitation of hospitals and construction of health centers, construction and rehabilitation of palaces, provision of perimeter fencing for schools, security of lives and property among others.

The governor assured that requests from the communities in the senatorial district would be factored into the 2026 budget, reaffirming his commitment to inclusive governance and improved infrastructure as well as enhanced security.

Oyebanji used the forum to preach peace ahead of the conduct of the 2026 governorship election, urging the people of the state not to allow politics to divide them, and maintaining that “Ekiti is one irrespective of political leanings and affiliations.”

While urging his supporters to maintain peace, Oyebanji assured that the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti will be peaceful and conducted without any bloodshed.

He added that Ekiti people will decide their next governor with their votes and will peacefully elect a governor of their choice.

He said: “We are all one in Ekiti State and politics should not divide us. It is God that puts somebody in position and in Ekiti, we are all one and I don’t want politics to divide us.

As a contestant, I want to assure you that there will be no bloodshed and it is you people that will vote for who you want.

“Anytime the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) lifts ban on campaign, you will vote for somebody who has performed well.

“Four years look long but it is a very short time; I knew that the four years will soon expire and I will come back to you and that was why I hit the ground running from day one.”

Responding to a request for improved security in the state, governor Oyebanji appreciated the people of the senatorial district for making land available for commercial agriculture.

He said this helped recovered hectares of land hitherto used as hideouts by criminal elements many of whom have fled the state after a massive land clearing exercise for commercial farming.

He disclosed that the siting of an Army Barracks in Ikere Ekiti was a means to enhance security not only in the zone but in the entire state, commending the roles played by the traditional ruler of the town, the Ogoga, Oba Adejimi Adu Alagbado and a prominent son of the soil, the Chief of the Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede in ensuring the takeoff of the military base.

“I thank the community for providing land for the barracks and I believe the barracks will be completed very soon and more than 800 soldiers will be posted there. When this is done, the criminal elements will be very far from our state and our security architecture will be further strengthened,” he added.

He also promised improved welfare packages for traditional rulers, revival of the five-kilometer-per-local government road project, revisiting of the Omuo Trailer Park, the incorporation of the Olowe Museum into the 2026 budget, and the naming of a landmark project after the late APC Chairman, Chief Paul Omotoso.

In his welcoming remarks, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Oyeniyi Adebayo, said the interaction with the citizens is in line with inclusive and evidence of entrenchment of probity, accountability and transparency in governance.

He noted that Oyebanji’s transparency in handling the state finances has again been recognised as Ekiti has retained the first position in budget transparency, an accolade the state has won for the sixth consecutive quarter.

He noted that the governor had always come to the people while preparing the budget to ask for what they want to be included in the budget rather than sitting down in his office in Ado Ekiti.

The event was attended by the Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs.) Monisade Afuye; the Chairman of the State Council of Traditional Rulers and the Ogoga of Ikere, Oba Adejimi Adu Alagbado; the Arinjale of Ise Ekiti, Oba Adetunji Ayodele Ajayi; the Elemure of Emure Ekiti, Oba James Babatunde Ajiboye.

Others are the House of Representatives member representing Ekiti South Federal Constituents 2, Hon Femi Bamisile; Secretary to the State Government, Prof Habibat Adubiaro; Head of Service, Dr Folakemi Olomojobi; House of Assembly members, memebers of the state executive council, Local Government Chairmen and community leaders.

  • BAO has endeared himself to Ekitis across party lines – There’s therefore no vacancy in Government house come 2026

BAO has endeared himself to Ekitis across party lines – There’s therefore no vacancy in Government house come 2026

Anybody who wants to contest the governorship election in Ekiti state should come after 2030. Oyebanji has won the 2026 election” – former governor Ayo Fayose of the PDP.

Whoever knows him well would know two things about Ayo Fayose, former two term governor of Ekiti state: one, that he passionately loved the PDP and, the other, that he neither minces his words nor talk glibly.

For a very long time, Fayose has vowed never to  join the APC and though he said those alluring words about governor Biodun Oyebanji, that is, endorsed him ahead  the 2026 election, Nigerians are yet to see him dump the beleaguered party, despite its many troubles.

“Generally speaking, I think we have a lot to thank God for and we must thank our Governor. Everywhere we turn to its BAO. I do exchange notes regularly with him. When I was coming back to the country yesterday morning, I travelled with somebody from the Senate from London, and he said to me: “thank you very much for the Governor. I went to Ekiti for Senator Opeyemi Bamidele’s conferment of an honourary degree. You need to extend the Ekiti magic to the rest of the country to help all of us”.

This is all due to the way and manner our Governor has conducted himself and conveyed his sense of humility and service to the party, both at the national and state levels.

That is why we are all gathered here to happily work with him to accomplish the task of greater development for our people” – Former Ekiti state governor – Dr Kayode Fayemi.

In saying what he did, Governor Fayose was not alone amongst former  Ekiti state governors who are not even members of governor Oyebanji’s party but who have endorsed him ahead of 2026.

As far back as August 2024, another respected former Ekiti state governor, Engr Segun Oni has expressed his admiration for the leadership style of Governor  Oyebanji as well as his dedication to the development and progress of the state, describing him  as exemplary, and a model for others to emulate.

He equally lauded Governor Oyebanji’s commitment to good governance, stressing that his inclusive approach has fostered unity and peace in the state, thereby creating an environment conducive to growth and prosperity.

While noting that he might have different views on certain issues, governor Oni said he will never criticise Oyebanji openly. Rather, he will approach him in a manner that will promote unity, rather than discord”.

Like all the former governors quoted above, I have always, in my writings about governor Oyebanji,  popularly known as BAO by  the appreciative Ekitis,  laid greater emphasis on his statesmanship.

While not underrating the place, and importance of brick and mortar in a state which suffered millenial neglect as a result of disunity amongst its political elite, some of who, unfortunately,  permitted unnecessary external interference in its affairs – especially during the shambolic Obasanjo years – for me, like  the governors, BAO’s  admirable cohering governance model has been far more impactful, and beneficial to the state and its people. One can claim, with considerable justification, and with due apology to all his predecessors, the former helmsmen, that the atmosphere of peace, and near unanimity, in the Ekiti political firmament today is  unprecedented.

    And that’s the gospel truth.

While we Ekitis do not hate ourselves- since we are all one, any way, some very   clever politicians- external to the state – and all, incidentally, of the Peoples Democratic Party – persons like former President Olusegun Obasanjo who actually loathed us, and said so to our faces – were given  undue opportunity, by their party members within the state, to so completely insinuate themselves into our politics that instability reigned supreme in the state, up to the point that Ekiti actually had a one day governor.

    Things were that bad.

Unlike the peace and harmony governor Oni spoke glowingly about in his praise of BAO, it was not uncommon to see many of our top politicians, even within the same party, who were not  on speaking terms.

BAO, God be praised, has changed all that, and although political opponents may still virulently criticise his  performance, majority of our people will simply put that to cheap politics.

It was as a result of all these, and since we say in Ekiti:’pe omo to ba sipa ni iya e ngbe’, the Ekiti State Caucus of the All Progressives Congress, upper Friday, hadn’t any alternative to, unanimously, endorsing both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Oyebanji for a second term in office, citing their exemplary leadership qualities, and impactful policies.

The endorsement, which came up at a special Caucus meeting of the state chapter of the party, was held in Iyin Ekiti, and attended by the first civilian Governor of the state, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, the immediate past Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi and the incumbent, Mr Biodun Oyebanji.

Moving the motion for the President’s endorsement which was loudly ratified through a  voice vote, Senator Yemi Adaramodu (Ekiti South), commended President Tinubu for his decisive economic reforms which are beginning to revitalise the country’s economy as was recently confirmed by the IMF, as well as his  security strategies which are aimed at addressing the root causes of insecurity in the country.

Both they appreciate, are work in progress. Adaramodu

described the President’s reforms as transformational and impactful, stressing that the Ekiti APC is, proactively, adopting continuity in order to deepen, and fruitify, the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President.

In the same vein, moving the motion for Governor Oyebanji’s endorsement for re- election, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye

Aribasoye, said the Governor has demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities, characterised by an unwavering commitment to the peoples’ welfare, as well as ensuring an all – round development of the state.

He praised his   sterling performance and for consistently prioritising the needs and aspirations of the citizenry, thereby fostering trust and unity across party lines.

All these, he said, the governor did with integrity and all round dedication and commitment to the development of  Ekitis, irrespective of party affiliation.

The result has been tremendous infrastructural development, enhanced security, improved healthcare and educational facilities all positively impacting the socio – economic development of the state.

Although, stricto senso, this is not a write up on BAO’s infrastructural development strides, the write up will be incomplete⁰, if I fail to say a word or two, about his gargantuan achievements in the Health sector, for instance, achievements seen in other spheres of the states economy.

Here I shall not have to re- invent the wheel.

Rather, because of space constraint, I shall simply present an abridged version of a well documented WhatsApp write up on the subject, by Femi Esan who wrote, inter alia:

“In less than two years, here’s a glimpse of what BAO has done in the health sector:

    1. Teaching and Tertiary Healthcare Reform.

    ● Full renovation of Male & Female Medical Wards at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH)

    ● Upgrade of the main theatre and installation of high-tech tools: mammogram unit, LED surgical lamps, oxygen plant (ongoing), 10KVA inverter, hospital beds and patient trolleys etc.

    ● Completion of a state-of-the-art NICU, giving premature babies a fighting chance.

    2. General & Secondary Health Facilities

    ● 9 General Hospitals across Ijan, Ijesa-Isu, Ilawe, Okemesi, Efon-Alaaye, Iye, Ayede, Ifaki, with others now rehabilitated with upgraded diagnostic and surgical equipment.

    ● Renovation of Health Centres in places like Ilawe, and equipping the Okeyinmi Health Centre in Ado-Ekiti.

    ● And now, under a bold ward-focused health access strategy, no fewer than 121 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs), at least one per ward, are undergoing renovation across the state.

The idea behind this is that healthcare shouldn’t be a journey, it should be a right, and it should be close by.

    3. Access & Affordability: Health Insurance & ‘Ulera Wa’

    ● Every ward in Ekiti now has at least one accredited health facility.

    ● Facilities receive monthly capitation to prepare for emergencies and stock up ahead of time.

    ● Over ₦30 million per cycle pumped into each facility to maintain steady, proactive service.

And, the crown jewel,  the “Ulera Wa” program, a comprehensive answer to free healthcare in Ekiti.

    It covers: Pregnant women

Children under 5 Aged & pensioners

Over 1,000 sickle cell warriors, among very many other beneficiaries

And more than 500,000 beneficiaries… and still counting

By June, that figure is projected to hit 1 million.

    4. Medical Workforce Reform

    ● Pay parity for doctors across the Ministry of Health and Hospitals Management Board.

    ● Renovation of the Dialysis Centre at EKSUTH.

    ● Completion of a new hostel for nursing students, closing long-standing infrastructure gaps.

    5. Health Equity and Inclusion

    ● Free health scheme for People With Disabilities (PWDs)

    ● Assistive devices and special needs equipment distributed statewide

    ● More than a dozen special needs schools now have access to medical support infrastructure

    What You Should Know:

    ● Ekiti now ranked 3rd nationally in the SBM Health Preparedness Index 2024.

    ● Oyebanji is indeed building a system that works before you scream emergency.

What’s happening is about real people walking into public hospitals and walking out treated, seen, and respected.

It’s about ensuring that healthcare is nearby, affordable, and reliable, not once in a while but every day”.

Above, without a scintilla of doubt is what, in many parts of the country, a governor would pray he could achieve in his two terms of 8 years.

What governor Oyebanji has demonstrated in Ekiti is how, in reality, every state governor, in every part of the country, should endeavour to let President Tinubu’s economic policies impact his own corner of the country.

Rather than wait to see their people chorusing ‘Ebi n pawa’ – we are hungry all over the place – they should let the huge monthly inflow from the federation account – a consequence of fuel subsidy cancellation – reflect on the overall well being of their people.

    Legacy

“I want to be remembered as a governor who always tells the truth. I don’t lie! My goal is to live in the hearts of Ekiti people, and I believe the key to achieving this is by staying connected with them and implementing policies that positively impact their lives. Ultimately, I aspire to be remembered as a governor who brought prosperity to our people, one who demonstrated responsible and responsive leadership.

“Chief Obafemi Awolowo is remembered more for his revolutionary policies, such as Free Education, than for symbols like Cocoa House. To me, substance always trumps symbols. While constructing bridges and buildings is important, they must resonate with the people to have a lasting impact. This is why I’m committed to sustaining the agricultural revolution in Ekiti, empowering our youths to earn a responsible living.

“Interestingly, we’re renovating most of Awolowo’s Farm Settlements in the state, which were built decades ago. It’s remarkable to think that Awolowo had such vision back then, and it’s our duty to build upon his legacy. By renovating these settlements, we’re ensuring they continue to benefit the people of Ekiti.

“Building on our existing efforts, we plan to establish six more Farm Settlements across Ekiti in 2025. This expansion will not only provide decent accommodations for our over 1,000 employed youths in the sector but also enable them to live on-site, work efficiently, and earn a decent income. Empowering our youths and promoting agricultural development is a legacy I’m committed to leaving.

“My goal is to leave a lasting legacy that transforms the lives of Ekiti people. I envision a future where pregnant women can safely deliver their babies at well-equipped Primary Health facilities, staffed with skilled nurses and stocked with essential medications. I also aspire to create a world-class education system where our students can compete with their peers from anywhere in the world. This is the kind of legacy I’m committed to leaving behind.”

     2026 Governorship Election

“As a deeply spiritual individual, I firmly believe my role as Governor of Ekiti State is a divine assignment. Those close to me can attest that my faith plays a central role in every aspect of my life. My life is grounded in the philosophy that everything I have is a gift from God, and what He gives, no one can take away. This guiding principle shapes my decisions and actions as a leader.

“In 2022, becoming the governor of Ekiti State was the furthest thing on my mind. As SSG (Secretary to the State Government), I was focused on my duties, looking forward to returning to my farm and spending time with my family. I genuinely believed my time in state-level politics had come to an end, but fate had other plans. I’m often referred to as the ‘reluctant governor’ because my ascension to this role was unexpected, even to myself. I’m grateful for this opportunity, which I believe it’s a testament to the power of divine intervention.

“I recently addressed concerns about the 2026 elections, which many people have been inquiring about via text messages. However, I maintain that God will guide us in the right direction when the time is right.

“Honestly, I don’t believe I can determine my future. The only moment I control is the present, and I’ve chosen to trust in God’s plan and timing rather than worrying about things beyond my control, like the 2026 elections. This approach may be untypical for a politician, but it brings me peace. By focusing on the present and trusting in God’s guidance, I’m able to stay grounded and forward-thinking.

“I always remind myself and my wife that the life of a governor isn’t entirely real. To stay grounded, I’ve made conscious choices. I use a simple Kia as my official car, reserving armoured vehicles for security purposes only. I’ve also maintained existing vehicles rather than purchasing new ones, and kept my convoy small. Notably, I’ve opted out of using Police Despatch Riders to avoid adding to the artificiality of this life. Thankfully, my wife supports my approach, and I’ve found peace in staying true to myself.”

     Personal Reflections

“Ekiti State has been grappling with numerous challenges, particularly resource constraints. Despite these difficulties, we’ve prioritized every sector. One incident still resonates with me – the killing of two traditional rulers and abduction of school children by bandits and kidnappers. Thankfully, President Tinubu’s timely intervention from abroad, through special directives, enabled us to apprehend most perpetrators, though unfortunately, some innocent lives were lost.

“I recall many sleepless nights during the kidnapping ordeal, waking up to ensure every effort was made to rescue the children. Thankfully, they were recovered, and we provided them with rehabilitation support. I’m grateful to God for the successful outcome.

“I believe God has been instrumental in helping me cope with the challenges of governance. My 12-year preparation for this role has also been invaluable, as I dedicated myself to understanding governance at this level. I’m grateful for the guidance and advice of former governors, who have been generous with their counsel, providing valuable support when faced with tough decisions.

“As governor, I’ve also learned a valuable lesson: the power of listening more and talking less. A leader’s words carry significant weight, and people take them seriously. Therefore, it is essential to be mindful of what we say and when we say it. By listening more and speaking less, I’ve come to realize that sometimes silence is the most effective response. This approach not only helps me make more informed decisions but also fosters deeper connections with others.”

     As I see it …

Governor Oyebanji’s leadership philosophy is rooted in Aristotelian ideals. He combines unwavering reliability with empathetic insight. His decades-long career has equipped him to navigate complex political, social and economic landscapes. His selfless focus on the well-being of others epitomizes the transformative power of human connection in governance. As he marks his 57th birthday, Nigerians eagerly await his administration’s focus for 2025.

As the New Year unfolds, Ekitis look forward to Governor Oyebanji’s sustained efforts to expand his innovative initiatives and uplift his constituents from the challenges of multidimensional poverty. With his commendable initiation of the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria’s integrated rural development programmes, he should utilize the holiday period to refine his approach, potentially revitalizing these programmes to boost productivity and stimulate cottage industries. This refined strategy could transition Ekiti State into an export-oriented economy, positively impacting future generations and positioning it as a competitive economy in West Africa.

Again, Oyebanji’s promising start can be enhanced by embracing innovative models, such as the Dutch model, to drive transformative legacy projects. This would align with his administration’s focus on security, health education, infrastructure, agriculture and welfare, ensuring sustainable progress for Ekiti State.

He should also be ready to spend more on rural roads. According to the World Bank, the multiplier effects are ten times the initial investment. By investing in rural infrastructure, his administration can foster a virtuous cycle of development, empowering marginalized communities and promoting a more equitable distribution of resources.

As Governor Oyebanji celebrates another year of life and service, may his selfless spirit and kindness continue to inspire and uplift those around him!

May his unwavering commitment to the welfare of Ekitis continue to inspire hope and optimism!

May his humility, service-oriented leadership and impactful governance be a guiding light in Nigeria’s political landscape!

May the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, grant us peace in Nigeria!

    Concluded.

Leadership insights: 40 minutes with Governor Oyebanji (1)

I recently had the honour of visiting Ekiti State, where I embarked on a self-guided tour to explore the projects completed or underway by Governor Biodun Oyebanji. From the bustling streets of Ado-Ekiti to the quaint towns of Ikere-Ekiti, Ikole-Ekiti and Oke Ako-Ekiti, Oyebanji’s transformative initiatives have inspired optimism among residents, who appreciate his people-first leadership.

As I concluded my tour, I sought out the governor’s perspective on his administration’s progress. Our thoughtful discussion revealed a leader committed to redefining the boundaries of possibility for all Ekiti residents. With his dedication to the welfare of his people, Oyebanji indeed stands out as a refreshing anomaly in today’s political landscape. This commitment to progress is further reflected in his own assessment of his administration’s accomplishments.

    Assessment of Administration

“As the elected governor of Ekiti State, I believe it’s not my place to assess my own administration. Instead, I leave that to the people who elected us into office. However, I can confidently say that over the past two years, we’ve made significant progress in delivering on our campaign promises, particularly across the six pillars of our administration: Governance, Youth Development and Job Creation, Human Capital Development, Agriculture and Rural Development, Infrastructure and Industrialization, and Arts, Culture and Tourism.

“My greatest joy is that we’ve been able to restore trust in government, which I believe is essential for effective governance. We’re committed to continuing this progress and ensuring that our social contract with the people of Ekiti State is fulfilled. During my election campaign, I pledged to be open, responsive and responsible, and over the past two years, we have worked tirelessly to uphold these values, earning recognition from nearly all the critical stakeholders in the state for our commitment to transparency and accountability.”

    Economic Development

“Our campaign is built around the concept of Shared Prosperity, ensuring that everyone, regardless of background or education, can enjoy a quality life. In Ekiti, we believe that everyone deserves to live well. To drive growth, we’re focusing on supporting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which are the engine of our economy.

“We recognize that security is a critical prerequisite for development. As a government, we’re committed to making a distinction between growth and development. While growth refers to an improvement in per capita income, development is about building infrastructure and creating opportunities for all. Ultimately, our goal is to create a secure and prosperous Ekiti State where everyone can thrive.

“Ekiti State’s development strategies are designed to catalyze growth for the people. We’ve established the Bureau of Local Content to ensure that a percentage of our physical projects is reserved for locals. This approach promotes local economic growth and reduces capital flight. Contractors working in Ekiti State are required to retain a percentage of their income within the state, encouraging local investment and ensuring the state benefits from its development projects.”

    Healthcare and Education

“Health and Education fall under our Human Capital Development pillar, built on the principle that ‘Health is Wealth.’ Upon taking office, we prioritized stabilizing the health sector, which had been plagued by low worker morale due to poor conditions of service. We addressed the disparity in health workers’ salaries, bringing them in line with federal rates. Notably, we’re one of the first states to pay Hazard Allowance, despite being one of the poorest states. We also pay the Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) and have allocated funds to upgrade the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) facilities.

“We’ve taken significant steps to boost the morale of our health workers, including paying CONMESS and CONHESS to health workers at both the state and Local Government levels. This move has greatly reduced the number of health workers leaving local and state facilities to work in federal facilities. We’re currently renovating 11 health facilities across Ekiti State, equipping them with necessary tools and attracting more doctors to the state. Our goal is to ensure that healthcare services are available, affordable and accessible to all.

“Our flagship Health Insurance Scheme, Ulerawa, has been a game-changer, with many individuals, including pensioners, enrolled in the program. Recent statistics show that we’ve achieved a significant reduction in mortality rates in the state – a first in decades. This accomplishment builds upon the foundation laid by my predecessor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and demonstrates the value of continuity in governance.

“Our education strategy is built on the idea that the quality of education depends on three key factors: what you teach, where you teach, and how you teach. We’re focusing on developing a relevant and up-to-date curriculum, improving teacher training and methodology, and creating a conducive learning environment. We’re upgrading our curriculum, providing teacher training and re-training, and increasing subvention to our tertiary institutions. We’re also incentivizing our teachers and prioritizing the teaching of STEM subjects.”

    Itawure-Aramoko-Ado Ekiti Road

“I’d like to commend President Bola Tinubu for his efforts in improving road infrastructure in Ekiti State. During my campaign, I made a promise to the people of Ekiti State, and I intend to keep it. One issue that’s important to address is the Itawure-Aramoko-Ado-Ekiti Road, which is a federal road. As such, Ekiti State Government does not have the authority to make changes to this road.

“The current protocol for reconstructing federal roads isn’t feasible for Ekiti State, as it doesn’t provide for refunds. Unless we receive assurances from the Federal Government that it’ll refund us or allow us to toll the road, we can’t move forward.

“As the governor, I must be mindful of the state’s resources – if Ekiti State were my company, I wouldn’t spend its resources without a clear plan for returns. Fixing a federal road, for which we won’t be reimbursed or able to toll for revenue, would divert funds away from our state roads.

“To mitigate the challenges posed by the poor condition of the federal road, we’ve reconstructed and prepared alternative state roads that offer a smoother journey to Ado-Ekiti. Specifically, we’ve identified and upgraded routes through Efon Alaye, Ipole Iloro, Ikogosi, Erijiyan and Ado-Ekiti, making them truck-free by installing barriers. This demonstrates effective governance in action.

“Meanwhile, we appreciate the Federal Government’s efforts in constructing the Akure-Ita Ogbolu-Ikere-Ado-Ekiti Road. However, I am currently seeking over N200 million to pay for the houses that were demolished in Ikere-Ekiti to pave the way for the completion of that road. Unfortunately, this amount will not be reimbursed by the Federal Government.”

    Continuity of Projects and Policies

“As the first back-to-back government in Ekiti State, we’ve seen a mix of policy changes and continuity. Our campaign is focused on Continuity, and we’ve delivered on that promise by completing most of the projects started by Governor Fayemi. I was able to do this because I was part of that government and believed in the projects’ reasoning. We’ve even improved upon some of them.

“We’ve also made progress on secondary facilities in the state. Governor Fayemi completed and equipped 10 or 11 of them, and we’ve started work on the remaining ones. This continuity benefits the people, as we’re not starting from scratch. Instead, we’re building upon existing foundations.

“Our administration is guided by a 30-year Development Plan launched by Governor Fayemi. My manifesto is an offshoot of this plan, making it easier for us to execute our projects. Also, the Ekiti State Transition Law makes it mandatory for successor governments to complete their predecessors’ projects. This law has not been revoked, and we aim to complete these projects before leaving office.”

    • To be concluded.
  • Who is afraid of an automatic ticket?

Who is afraid of an automatic ticket?

By JMO Ekundayo and Wale Ojo-Lanre

The concept of an automatic ticket for an incumbent governor or president refers to a situation where a sitting governor or president, as a member of a political party, seeks re-election and is typically guaranteed the party’s nomination without facing significant competition in a primary election. While the notion of incumbents receiving an automatic ticket is not new, it has precedents in established and advanced democracies globally.

It is a truism that certain critics view automatic tickets for an incumbent as an aberration that hampers internal democracy or competition within viable party members. They argue that competitive elections foster a sense of participation, inclusion and engagement within the party. However, it is essential to recognize that an automatic ticket policy does not inherently preclude internal discussion or engagement. A well-structured party can uphold democratic processes through thorough vetting and consensus-building among its members, even when there is no contested primary. This has happened in mature democracies around the world with the political parties of the incumbent waxing stronger. The fear of implosion within the ruling party if a consensus candidate is endorsed is therefore jejune, pedestrian and puerile.

Saliently and succinctly stated, it is indeed possible to unite behind a capable incumbent, while still fostering internal harmony and inclusion. In a typical friendly and dynamic political landscape, where apparent opposition to the incumbent is seemingly silent, supporting the incumbent governor can enhance party cohesion, allowing members to unanimously work together toward common goals rather than entrenching unhealthy competition against one another within the same party.

This scenario often arises due to several factors, including the governor’s established political popularity, strong party loyalty, and perceived effective governance. In Ekiti, for instance, His Excellency, Mr. Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, popularly called BAO by his numerous adherents and admirers, has distinguished himself as a unique political figure who understands the essence of collaborative and inclusive governance. He has displayed exemplary leadership acumen to most Ekitikete in colour, context and content, more than any other man in the saddle since the creation of Ekiti State. His strategic and humane engagement with political personalities, regardless of their party affiliations, has endeared him to a broad spectrum of Ekiti residents. Furthermore, his uncommon style of interaction with the creme la creme of Ekiti such as the likes of Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), Barrister Femi Falana (SAN), Senator Babafemi Ojudu, Senator Adeyeye, Senator Olujinmi, etc. is unique and uncommon in the political disposition in the land of honour.

Remarkably, Governor Oyebanji has maintained close rapport with party leaders while initiating populist projects and sustainable programmes, along with various community development initiatives in the trajectory towards the ‘Shared Prosperity’ mantra of his administration. He has successfully cultivated a near-perfect relationship with political stakeholders in Ekiti, earning unprecedented loyalty, even from members of opposition parties. This unyielding acceptance further solidifies the case for his automatic adoption across party lines.

Ultimately, endorsing an automatic ticket for him within his party could be a strategic decision, yielding significant benefits for both the party and the State. Contrary to the concerns that automatic ticket policy undermines internal democracy, it is crucial to reaffirm that such a policy does not diminish internal dialogue or engagement. A unified front around a capable incumbent, like Governor Oyebanji, can still foster internal cohesion whilst channeling party efforts and resources towards collective and rewarding objectives.

Additionally, the claim that eliminating competitive primaries will negatively impact economic activity is an oversimplification. It is widely known globally that good governance engenders and enhances economic activities much more than ephemeral gains that organizing a local primary election can garner for a set of people. In this vein, while campaigns naturally stimulate economic activity, the primary focus should be on effective governance at all times. Going this route will ensure resources tied up in lengthy primary battles could be redirected toward community development, building infrastructure, and programmes that directly benefit constituents. Political parties can also seek alternative funding methods and engagement strategies that do not depend exclusively on candidate campaigns for economic stimulation.

Concerns about power dynamics, particularly the risk of fostering an overly powerful incumbent, merit consideration, but an automatic ticket does not inherently lead to autocracy. An accountable incumbent, like Governor Oyebanji, can maintain transparency and governance structures that prevent the erosion of democratic practices. His proven trustworthiness and rapport with party members reduce the need for competitive pressures typically faced by lesser-known challengers.

While some may view a guaranteed re-election as a pathway to complacency, this does not universally hold true. An effective leader strives for excellence, motivated by a desire to fulfill campaign promises and enhance his legacy — traits Governor Oyebanji has consistently demonstrated. He has also shown a willingness to listen to critiques and comments from constituents, party members and opposing politicians, using this feedback mechanism to remain engaged and responsive to the electorates’ needs.

The fear that an adoption policy will create internal division is unfounded, yet it is essential to emphasize that unity can thrive through shared vision and collective goals. The APC leadership—both in Ekiti and nationally— has fostered an inclusive environment, supporting various aspirations while promoting collaboration through effective relationship management. This was clearly manifested in the consensus endorsement of the erstwhile President Muhammadu Buhari for the second term ticket of the ruling APC in the 2019 presidential election.

Those raising concerns about potential legal challenges surrounding the adoption policy must remember that the APC is a living party, adhering to constitutional provisions and adopting potential amendments that allow for consensus around a sole candidate. By ensuring all voices are heard in the decision-making process, the party can limit the risk of legal disputes while enhancing its legitimacy.

On the topic of political evolution and youth engagement, the automatic adoption of Governor Oyebanji will inject new life into youth inclusion in governance and policy making. His advocacy for youth involvement bridges the gap between traditional power structures and the aspirations of younger generations, fostering a future-oriented political landscape. Initiatives that prioritize youth engagement within the party will counteract any perceptions of exclusion that may emerge from the adoption policy.

Concerns about setting a dangerous precedent through an automatic ticket are unfounded. Recent examples from around the world demonstrate that incumbents can run with little opposition due to their popularity and party support. For instance, several incumbents in the United States, such as Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis and Iowa’s Governor Kim Reynolds, faced minimal challenges in their Republican primaries.

Given the unique political context of Ekiti, the apparent lack of opposition parties supports the strategic decision to adopt a candidate who has demonstrated both leadership and effectiveness. An automatic ticket for a respected incumbent like Governor Oyebanji serves as a pragmatic response to the current political landscape, emphasizing stability rather than monopolization of power.

In conclusion, while the adoption of an automatic ticket raises legitimate questions regarding democracy, governance, and party unity, it also presents an opportunity for strategic maneuvering that can enhance the effectiveness of both the party and governance in Ekiti. Ultimately, striking a balance between ensuring democratic practices and promoting effective leadership that addresses constituent needs is vital. Open dialogue and inclusive governance can mitigate concerns, resulting in a stronger, more cohesive party that effectively serves the people of Ekiti. The adoption of an automatic ticket policy is not a dismissal of democracy but rather a tactical approach to party politics aimed at promoting stability, unity, and efficiency. By eliminating unnecessary competition, the party positions itself to face the general election with strength and purpose, allowing the incumbent to focus on delivering good governance.

Ours is Ile-iyi, Ile-eye, and an automatic ticket can serve as a tool to uphold this vision and prevent APC Ekiti State from unnecessary internal political bickering. Hence, an automatic ticket for Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji (BAO) is good for the soul of the ruling party, APC.
