Subsidy removal: Makinde never criticised Tinubu, Oyo APC is seeking attention – CPS

The chief press secretary to the Oyo state governor, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, has refuted the claims made by the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Governor Seyi Makinde.

He clarified that the governor did not criticize or accuse President Bola Tinubu of subsidy removal or its timing.

Olanrewaju emphasised that the governor’s remarks were focused on highlighting the impact of fuel subsidy removal on the public.

He dismissed the APC’s assertions as an attempt to gain attention and clarified that the governor acknowledged the undeniable effects of the policy on the populace without faulting its implementation or timing.

Olanrewaju spoke in reaction to an earlier statement by the Oyo APC through its publicity secretary, Olawale Sadare.

Olanrewaju said: “It is clear that the All Progressives Congress in Oyo State is on an attention-seeking voyage. The party has been put to deep slumber by the unprecedented achievements of His Excellency Governor Seyi Makinde in the last 55 months.

“What the party and its members do now is merely to grasp at anything to gain the public space. However, they seem to have forgotten that Oyo State people cannot be beguiled by the shallow arguments they keep bandying about.

“What the Governor said was to refer to the effects of the fuel subsidy removal on the populace. While not faulting the policy or the timing, the undeniable fact is that the policy has had a telling effect on the populace. That is what Governor Makinde referred to.

“The APC PRO, who is attacking the governor, also made reference to the effects of the same policy on the generality of Nigerians in the statement he issued. Is he also faulting the policy?

“The APC folks need to know when to drop politicking and face governance. As far as Governor Seyi Makinde is concerned, elections are over, it is time for governance. He is resolved to improve the lot of the people of Oyo state through quality leadership, the APC ranters can neither hinder nor stop him even if they fail to desist from their ranting.”

The Nation reports that the Oyo APC tackled Makinde over condemnation of fuel subsidy removal by Tinubu

The party took a swipe at the governor over what it described as his recent condemnation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to stop payment of fuel subsidy as contained in his (Tinubu) inaugural speech on May 29, 2023.

According to Oyo APC, Makinde made the remark during an Inter-faith prayer session held at the Agodi Government Secretariat on Tuesday where he reportedly blamed the worsening economic situation in the country on the Tinubu administration.

The statement read in part: “We had waited a few days expecting Gov. Makinde to debunk or make clarification on the misleading statement credited to him in the media since Tuesday but this never happened. It is then obvious that a governor, in his second term in office, actually put the blame of the dwindling economy on a seven-month-old government at the centre even when the whole world knows he is part of the problem.”

  • Row over Oyo law students’ bursary

An announcement that was meant to be soothing to students of Oyo State at the Law School has snowballed into accusations and counter-accusations between beneficiary students and those who are non-beneficiaries. CHIMA OSUJI reports.

    •We are shortchanged, say non-beneficiaries
    •Gladiators:we did our homework well

In early August, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde hosted some students of the Law School who are indigenes of the state.

The students, about 120,  visited the governor to congratulate him on his election victory. They used the opportunity to plead for bursary. Their request was granted by the governor who promptly issued a N60 million cheque (amounting to N500,000 per student) to the visitors. Shortly afterwards, government went ahead to put the information on its twitter handle that it had paid the bursary of the entire indigenes of the state in the Law School.

The information generated reactions on the social media. While many students applauded the governor for reviving the state bursary which had been in comatose since 2012, some other  students in the law school stoutly rose, to say they did not benefit from the award.

Though the governor was to later use the bursary as part of his achievements in ‘100 days in office’ a few weeks later; yet the entire episode appeared to be mired in controversy.

The law students of Class of 2018/2019 of Oyo State Law Students have described the disbursement of the bursary as ‘imbalanced’ and lacking adequate representation of real beneficiaries.

President of the 2018/19 Class, Kolapo Sodiq Abidemi, said his colleagues, got nothing from the largesse. adding that only the 2019/2020 Set, benefitted.

Abidemi, who is the national president of the Association of Oyo State Law School Students, a body comprising students in the law school across the six campuses, said the list submitted to the governor was not official, as he has in his custody the authentic list  issued by the Nigerian Law School.

CAMPUSLIFE learned that the Nigerian Law School has two sets of admission-the ‘regular set’ (2018/2019) admitted in November); as well as the ‘backlog set’ (admitted in April for the 2019-2020 session). While the former category has students spread across the six campuses of the law school; the latter group has students in only Yenagoa, Yola and Abuja arms of the school.

Abidemi attributed the ‘shortchanging’ to misinformation given to the government by a representative of the backlog set, Mr Olaniyi Adisa Ogunlade, who according to him, allegedly omitted his set on the ground that they had already graduated from the law school.

Though already through with their final exams, Abidemi said neither has their results  been released, nor have they been called to the Bar, indicating that they are still in the system.

Meanwhile, Ogunlade, has dismissed the allegation leveled against him as a tissue of lies. Defending his stance, Ogunlade said he acted on behalf of his colleagues alone, therefore he is not answerable for others.

    The Genesis

CAMPUSLIFE learned that as a   tradition upon resumption at the law school, students usually form a cell across the six campuses of the school, and with a representative, to reach out to their state government for bursaries. According to findings, Ogunlade had earlier opened a whattsssup platform Forum of Oyo State Indigenes where he asked his colleagues at the three aforementioned campuses to send in their names. CAMPUSLIFE heard that the regular and backlog sets separately collated their lists and sent to the government, but these were rejected because government insisted on honouring only a comprehensive list from the law school.

Abidemi told CAMPUSLIFE that he eventually obtained a consolidated list from the law school comprising names of the two sets. But Ogunlade, with some members of his executive, sought a courtesy visit with Governor Makinde ostensibly to congratulate him on his election victory; but later used that platform to tender the list containing names he gathered on the whatssup platform he earlier opened.

Said Abidemi: “I am the president of the NLS Oyo State indigenes. We set out to collect bursary from the state, which was ready to pay us. Then government directed that only those who chose Oyo as their state of origin in law school would be eligible. We requested law school to send a comprehensive list of names of both sets, and the law school was in the process of sending those names when government suddenly announced that it had approved N500,000 bursary for Oyo State indigenes in law school.

“We did our investigations and later discovered the governor approved the bursary to backlog students only.

‘’We also learnt Ogunlade misguided the governor that our set had graduated, but we later informed the governor that we have not. The governor then promised to see the comprehensive list by the law school and do the needful.

“To our utter dismay, the governor refused to go on with the collation. The governor later came on air to make a public apology on a radio programme. However, we wish to state that we’re offended because, one, our right was infringed upon, paying: backlog’s students at the expense of regular students.

“Two, the governor announced that he approved N500,000 to each   law student of Oyo origin. This has created a misconception about us in the public. Friends and family members think we’ve been paid. Going by the governor’s statement, the public believed all law school students of Oyo origin have been paid. Only God knows the number of calls I have received from friends to share my N500,000 with them. How do I explain to them?

    Ogunla defends stance:

Ogunlade dismissed the allegation leveled against him.

He also claimed ignorance of the existence of the regular set during the planning and execution stages, saying he simply acted for members of his forum only.

Giving his own side of the story to CAMPUSLIFE, Ogunlade described as ‘majic wand’ the whatssapp group-Forum of Oyo State Indigenes which he set up for his contemporaries at the Yenagoa, Yola and Abuja campuses.

“I was offered admission at the Yenagoa campus of the Nigerian Law School in April, “Ogunlade began.

He continued: “Immediately, I established a whatssapp group and I tried as much as possible to send a link to the three campuses that are used for the backlog set.

“It was a voluntary association with a mandate to push the state government to pay us bursary allowance. So, we’ve been on it since we have been on campus. We’ve been having normal deliberations among ourselves on the platform. So, I requested that members should submit their names and other details on that platform.

“I took out time to personally collate all the lists on my own. So, when we came to Ibadan for external training, we wrote a letter requesting for a courtesy visit to the governor. We wanted to congratulate him on his emergence as the Executive Governor of Oyo State. We were able to push that letter, and got an audience with His Excellency.

“I led the seven-member delegation, spoke on behalf of my forum and thereafter we presented a gift to him. I then pleaded on behalf of members of my forum for bursary. Right there, His Excellency requested for the list of my members and I gave it to him because I had already prepared it. It contained 120 names of my members. On that spot, His Excellency approved the sum of N500,000 to each of us. That was how the news went viral.”

Ogunlade however admitted that not all backlog students benefited from the bursary, attributing the development to those who defaulted in sending in their details to the platform.

No directive to pay regular students yet, says govt.

During his live broadcast on the 100 days in office, Makinde’s attention was brought to the plight of the regular set who are yet to be paid. The governor immediately apologised, saying he was misinformed that the set had already graduated. Nonetheless, he promised to right the wrong, while also making adequate preparation for the twin sets that will be offered admission to the law school next year.

Speaking with CAMPUSLIFE, secretary of the bursary department, Oyo State Ministry of Education Mrs Akinremi M.J, said that no further directive has been given by government in respect of the aggrieved students.

Akinremi was equally noncommittal on whether the aggrieved students’ request would eventually be granted.

Nevertheless, she suggested that the students could visit the state secretariat to express their displeasure, adding that she as well as the Commissioner of Education would be on ground to attend to their grievances.

  • 100 days: PDP accuses APC of publicising falsehood on Makinde

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Oyo State chapter, has accused the state’s chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of being desperate to blackmail what it described as “the laudable achievements” of Governor Seyi Makinde and the ruling party in the state in the last 100 days of his administration.

The PDP, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Engineer Akeem Olatunji, accused the APC of sponsoring all manners of falsehood against the PDP and the Makinde government all in an effort aimed at belittling the successful clearing of the rot left behind by the APC in the state and the positive turnaround the state has begun to experience since Makinde assumed office.

The statement reads in parts, “We are greatly appalled at the desperation of the APC to publicise all manners of lies and falsehood against our government.

“There is a permissible level of decency in politics and we expect all Omoluabis to follow that cause.

“Rather than wish our state well after the eight years of disastrous rule and bad governance the APC foisted on Oyo State, that party is standing alone as a rotten apple in the basket, seeking to negatively affect others.

“Let us assure the lie merchants in the APC that our party, the PDP stands firm with Governor Seyi Makinde, and the laudable achievements he has recorded in 100 days.

“No member of the PDP is angry with the Governor and no one is expressing any such frustration as contained in the lies being marketed by the APC.”

The statement indicated that the PDP is solidly behind Governor Makinde on every step all the way, as he continues in his giant strides of laying the foundation for the accelerated development of Oyo State.

The PDP Publicity Secretary added that the umbrella party is more than ever before united as a family, saying: “we are impressed at the globally acclaimed good works of our Governor, the GSM. No one abandons a good product, not even the blind.

“We are making particular reference to a story from the frustrated camps of the APC with the headline “PDP Leaders Dump Oyo Gov. We affirm that this is another of their classic lies, as such write-up is not only laughable but comical.

“It can only come from agents of darkness who do not wish Oyo State well.

“Let us place on record that purveyors of such stories are either deluded, suffering from acute amnesia, or just trying to make a nuisance of themselves.

“It is not only unfounded, frivolous and malicious but also a great lie that stands no reason. Governor Makinde is no longer about Oyo State, he is already a nationally acclaimed deliverer of good dividends of democracy and good governance.

“When God begins a special project, only a fool will refuse to join the train. We as a party are more than ever before, proud of our God-sent ‘Mr. Talk and Do Governor,’ who works more and talks less, and this willpower of Governor Makinde has rekindled our hope and faith in the actualisation of the Oyo project embarked upon by our governor.

“We are 100 percent satisfied with his every move and decision, because he treats every member of PDP as members of the family. We, therefore, enjoin all members of the public to disregard in totality the distractive publications, falsehood and unbridled lies being peddled against the service-delivering Governor Makinde.”

  • Makinde is committed to ‘pact’ with coalition, says aide

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Wednesday reiterated his commitment to the coalition between his ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Party (ADP), led by Senator Olufemi Lanlehin.

He said Lanlehin, who said he had pulled out of the coalition, did so in bad faith.

Makinde’ aide, Babatunde Oduyoye, said in a statement at Ibadan, the state capital, Lanlehin’s action was shocking.

He ssid: “It is more shocking to read Senator Lanlehin’s allegation that his decision was hinged on Governor Seyi Makinde’s infidelity to the coalition agreement.

“That allegation, to say the least, is a clear affront on the sincerity of Governor Makinde and his magnanimous disposition in handling all the discussions about the coalition.

“Let us also state without equivocation that the claim by the Senator is untrue, unjustifiable and inconsistent with the reality of it all.

Oduyoye, maintained that the governor could not be accused of non-compliance by any party, because he had lived up to his promise to all parties to the coalition and in some cases “even bending backwards to accommodate all interests.”

He said that the Governor has lived up to his promise not only to Senator Lanlehin but also to all members of the coalition, saying that the committee reached an agreement, which was signed by all the parties and tabled before the Governor.

He said that the agreement contained a template for the sharing of positions in government as well as membership of boards and parastatals, noting that procedures have been set in motion for the actualization of the template.

According to Oduyoye, the apex committee of the coalition parties had met over three times, with agreements reached and tabled at a meeting with the Governor, adding that the Governor even improved on the agreement to further accommodate interests in the ADC and the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

The statement further read: “There was no dissenting voice from all the representatives of the parties at the meeting with Governor Makinde. Everyone commended how he handled the matter. Senator Lanlehin only had issues with the other leaders of the ADC on Monday when they were discussing how to share the positions allotted to the ADC.

“He should not in any way attempt to drag the name of Governor Makinde to the frustrations he is encountering in his party.

“If Senator Lanlehin withdraws from the coalition, he must have done so as an individual, because we are aware that the ADC as a party remains an integral part of the coalition as leaders of the party have repeatedly pledged their fidelity to the coalition.

“We believe that the coalition was not put together merely to further any personal aspiration other than the collective interests of the people of Oyo State.”
