I will demolish any illegal building in FCT, Wike declares

The minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike has vowed to restore the city’s master plan.

Wike who was in high spirits on Monday, August 21, said President Bola Tinubu expects positive changes in FCT.

He expressed displeasure over what he described as a high level of insecurity in the nation’s capital.

The minister who spoke during a press conference at the FCTA after the swearing-in ceremony at the Presidential Villa, said land allottees who have been given Certificates of Occupancy but failed to develop would also lose their lands to give way to those ready to build.

He said: “If you know you have built where you are not supposed to build, it will go down. It will never be business as usual.”

  • Tribunal upholds Wike’s re-election

The Rivers State Governorship Election Tribunal has dismissed the petition filed by the African Action Congress (AAC) governorship candidate in the 2019 general election, Biokpomabo Awara, against Independent National Electoral Commission, Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike and Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP).

The Tribunal presided over by Justice K. A. Orjiako dismissed the petition on the ground  that it was deemed abandoned on the ground  of Paragraph 4 of the First Schedule of the Electoral Act.

According to the Tribunal, the petition was deemed to be technically abandoned because the AAC and its Candidate failed to meet key procedural requirements as to applying for pre-hearing information.

The three man panel led by Justice K. A Ojiako declared that petition number EPT/RS/GOV/03/2019 was incompetent and therefore,  dismissed it.

Earlier, the tribunal struck out applications by the AAC Governorship Candidate, seeking that he be separated from all joint applications previously made with the party.

Recall that the AAC recently adopted Mr Henry Bello to represent it at the tribunal after the former counsel, Tawo Tawo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria withdrew from the matter, with a notice of change of counsel filed the tribunal.

This application came in after the AAC brought in another counsel to handle its matter at the tribunal.

The three man panel led by Justice K. A Ojiako, after going through  arguments in the Awara, AAC suit against Governor  Wike  ruled that all applications filed by the 1st Petitioner (Tawo Tawo, former AAC counsel) are struck out.

Ojiako noted that the application by the petitioner ( counsel for Awara; Mustafa Ibrahim) has been found to be an abuse of court process.

The panel also struck out the application filed  by the petitioner for pre-hearing of the matter.

The dismissal of the AAC Governorship Petition against  the re-election of Governor Wike by the Rivers State Governorship Election Tribunal is not new under the present dispensation,  as the Lagos State Governorship Election Tribunal also dismissed Petitions One and Two against the election of Lagos State Governor on similar ground.

  • A campaign of lies

Of course, Governor Wike has to be afraid, because he can never forget that he won NO election in 2015.

While we hold on to the piece of evidence that we have, it is no longer in doubt that underhand dealings took place in the acquisition of Keystone Bank and 9Mobile. The roles played by the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), both agencies of government have been widely reported and not controverted. The days of playing the ostrich by the presidency are over. No more hiding for them” – Atiku Abubakar insinuating Buhari is corrupt.

“Atiku is merely doing everything humanly possible to draw Buhari into co-tenancy in his lootocracy and thievery tag. It took PMB the width and breadth of his life to build his integrity tag and won’t be easy for Atiku to just wish it away with this his desperate propagation of lies” – Uche Okechukwu on Face book.

More than at any other time in the history of elections in this country, we see on a daily basis, a party which has turned lies into the very adrenalin that drives its election campaign. The nearer the February 16, 2019 gets, the more has become PDP’s measurable stress and unease; the more too has become their lying frenzy. What Ologbodiyan fails to lie about in Abuja, Governor Onyesom Wike effortlessly takes up in Port Harcourt, dreaming, seeing APC rigging election everywhere, perhaps even in his bedroom. We demonstrated above that not even the PDP presidential candidate, our one-time vice president, Atiku Abubakar, is immune to these lying predilections when it suits him. We show below, snippets of Governor Wike’s mid day dreams as captured by some newspapers:

    (Leadership, December 2018)

“Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government working in liaison with security agencies plan to disrupt 2019 governorship elections in Rivers and Akwa Ibom States. He stated that the motive is to mobilise the Federal Government’s alleged rigging security apparatus from all other states to the two states on a later date for the manipulation of the two strategic governorship elections. Wike, who spoke when the Netherlands Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Robert Petri, visited him at Government House, Port Harcourt, urged the European Union to pay closer attention to the two elections”.

Earlier he has been quoted as follows by the Daily Post: “Governor Wike declared that the refusal of President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the amended Electoral Act is part of the plot to rig the 2019 elections. According to him, the plot of the APC-led Federal Government was basically to write results against the wishes of Nigerians, boasting that the APC and the security agencies will not succeed in rigging the elections in Rivers State.”

He went on to explain that intelligence at the disposal of the Rivers State Government indicated that SARS Commander, Akin Fakorede – the very man who had been thwarting his electoral  illegalities – and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Stephen Hasso, featured prominently in the rigging plot of the APC federal government in the state”.

Of course, Governor Wike has to be afraid, because he can never forget that he won NO election in 2015. What Madam Patience could not do, her husband – President Jonathan did for him. Lest they think we are like them, spreading fake news, let us quote, at some length, how the Premium Times of 11 April, 2015 captured that event: “The Nigerian presidency has overruled the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, and has ordered the immediate redeployment of Tunde Ogunsakin, an Assistant Inspector General of Police, out of Rivers State, for allegedly failing to do the bidding of the Peoples Democratic Party. The Nigeria Police had on Thursday deployed senior police officers to oversee governorship and state assembly elections in states considered as the likely flash-points on Saturday. Mr. Ogunsakin, a former police commissioner in the state, and currently AIG in charge of Zone 6, headquartered in Calabar, was asked to return to Rivers to oversee police deployment for the election there.

On arrival, he ordered investigations into reports that PDP supporters were thump-printing ballot papers in some locations in the city. He also ordered that some thugs being positioned to foment trouble be restrained.” He rebuffed all entreaties by the presidency to work for the PDP candidate, Nyesom Wike, in the election”. That was the point at which President Jonathan ordered him out of the state. The rest, as they say, is history.

Other things that gave Wike ‘victory’ included a fraudulent use of incident forms, extensive deployment of thugs, followed by these Rivers state politicians’ very ‘good understanding’ of Nigerian courts where they always lay in wait at the apex level to make their move.

After Governor Wike is their lying machine, the aspiring modern day Paul Joseph Goebbels (Hitler’s Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany 1933 – 1945), their spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, to whom not even their own Olisa Metuh, of a better forgotten era, would hold the candle in manufacturing fake news. With his ranting, each time changing what form his alleged APC’s rigging would take. You’d wonder if this man went to school or ever heard of Logic or logical reasoning. He jumps to conclusions from very incorrect premises you know immediately that syllogism is Greek to him. In none of those his asinine pronouncements would he miss out saying majority of Nigerians have rejected Buhari and adopted Atiku as if he is on a permanent opinion poll. He once claimed that the adoption of indirect primaries by the APC was Buhari’s new rigging option for the 2019 election. The above is symptomatic of his obtuse effusions and for maximum effect. As if by rote, he will always call on  the international community to intervene to stop his jejune, so-called APC rigging plans. As I once wrote on these pages, that this gentle man is PDP’s spokesperson says so much about how low the party has sunk since 2015.

There are also some fringe players in their lies which, if you ask me, I think  are the result of their Dubai pilgrimages where they must have spent quite some time with the successors to Cambridge Analytica. That was the company this selfsame PDP paid handsomely to dig dirt on the APC presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari. To differentiate us from these purveyors of fake news, we again quote from Guardian.com: “At the heart of it all – data analytics company, SCL – the parent company of Cambridge Analytica. It had been hired by a rich Nigerian who supported the incumbent, President Goodluck Jonathan. “It was the kind of campaign that was our bread and butter,” says one ex-employee. “We’re employed by a billionaire who’s panicking at the idea of a change of government and who wants to spend big to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

Weaponising information to harm an opponent is their standard methodology and I won’t be surprised if this Dubai today, Dubai tomorrow is not for that purpose.

Among the fringe players is another Dubai pilgrim and very good friend of AMCON who, in his own case, fantasies about an electronic voting machine somewhere, at the touch of which, Buhari would have been successfully rigged in by INEC. Never knew we had such a simple minded senator.

    DIFFERENT STROKES

Nothing will demonstrate the difference between APC and PDP more than their approach to campaign financing.. While President Muhammadu Buhari has said severally that he would not approve public funds for the campaign, PDP chieftains have been bellyaching everywhere, and to whoever would listen, about how Buhari is not allowing campaign money to roll this time around. Said the President: “Try and use texts and multi media messages to seek votes for the party and government. There is no money from the treasury for use in the campaigns. I will not authorise that”. But not our friends. They accused Buhari of frightening financial institutions – many of which are themselves weak –  but  that won’t matter since they characteristically kill off banks. Accusing Buhari of intolerance for not allowing them run down banks, they said:” the atmosphere does not allow what people are used to. Activities are not buzzing as we usually witnessed in the past. The funding environment has changed. The government is hounding financial institutions funding campaigns. Business communities that are donating to campaigns are being scared away.” Yet the wailers cry they can’t see change.

All that these people who shout all over the place about poverty and unemployment to deceive us care about is money, money and more money. Those that spirited away billions of naira from the Paris loan refund can never have enough.

  • My dear Governor Wike

    My dear Governor Wike

I must start this letter with a confession sir. I have been a very naughty boy — especially on this space — since you became governor of dear Rivers State. I am sure you know what I mean Your Excellency; so, I won’t waste time giving details here. All I ask is your understanding for the sake of the future of Rivers and Nigeria.

I am sure you are wondering ‘what is this mischievous boy up to again?’, but fear not Your Excellency, I mean well, really well.

Sir, I am writing you because of 16 Rivers indigenes studying medicine at the All Saints University in Saint Vincent and Grenadines. These guys, which I have chosen to address as All Saints 16, found themselves overseas after they went through thorough screening under your predecessor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. I know you do not like hearing that name. So, pardon my mentioning it.

The Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency Scholarship (RSSDA) scheme found these guys worthy of overseas scholarship and sent them abroad. The overseas scholarship covered Medicine and allied courses. It was received after an aptitude test. After this, RSSDA secured admissions for successful candidates and entered into a bilateral agreement with students and the universities.

Sir, I understand that the scheme underwent a review after you took over. That review led to the suspension of these guys from medical school two months to their graduation. The school had no choice than to take this line of action because of the inability of the Rivers State government to pay outstanding tuition fees and living allowance. I understand this ran into $39,975 for five semesters.

Your Excellency, their plight made them upload a petition on www.change.org. Through the petition, the All Saints 16 pleaded with you to pay their allowance and tuition, which was stopped in November 2014.

Permit me sir to quote from their petition. It reads: “We have not been paid our upkeep allowance for about two years and 11 months. Our tuition fees have not been paid for 5 semesters (Clinical rotation [CR2 to CR6]), and as a result of this, all 16 of us were suspended from school in September, 2016 (2 months to our scheduled graduation date of November 2016).

“Ever since our suspension, we have been staying at home, not being allowed to conclude our remaining elective clinical rotations and all efforts to contact the Rivers State government for the release of funds proved abortive.”

One of the All Saints 16, Promise Adimele, spoke with our award-winning star reporter Hannah Ojo last week, Your Excellency. He was full of lamentation.

Let me quote him Sir so that you can feel their pains: “Feeding has been very difficult as we rely on the charities of friends and school colleagues. Most landlords have evicted us from their houses due to non-payment of rent and threatened us with legal proceedings in order to recover the outstanding rent. Life has been tough and unbearable for all of us since we were abandoned by the Rivers State government and RSSDA.”

Your Excellency, I understand that in a letter dated July 16, last year, the RSSDA wrote the school’s management to announce changes to the scheme.

Kindly permit me again to quote from the latter: “The point that needs to be emphasized here is that we will only sponsor students that are completing their studies in 2016 as well as settle outstanding commitment to date.

“Kindly be assured that the outstanding tuition payment for our students in your school have been adequately captured in the list of payables that are on the front burners of the Rivers State government. We will plead strongly with you to continue to show understanding and to kindly allow a little more grace and period specifically for the 16 final year students who also fall in the category of students that the government has pledged to continue their sponsorship.”

The letter, which was signed by Mr Lawrence Pepple, the Executive Director/CEO of the RSSDA, shows that the All Saints 16 still fall under the category the scheme is willing to sponsor. But it has been over one year since that letter and nothing has happened Your Excellency and the students are in quandary.

Sir, I understand that the fees and allowance were usually paid in advance. But all that changed eight months before Pepple wrote the school’s management. Your erstwhile  Commissioner for Agriculture Onemin Jack, in December 2015, told the students’ parents that only final-year students would complete their programmes abroad. The rest were to continue their studies at home.

Your Excellency, some mischievous people claim you see the All Saints 16 as children of your political opponents.

Hannah’s attempt to get the reaction of your Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Kenneth Kobani, saw him blaming it all on the man whose name you do not like hearing.

“You are from The Nation newspaper. Have you asked the APC zonal leader who was governor who refused to pay the fees of these children since 2014?  When you ask him you can come to us and ask us what we are doing,” he told Hannah and hurriedly hung the phone.

Sir, while it is true that the payment stopped in November 2014 before you came into office, the situation has remained the same. Please, help the All Saints 16, who have refuted the claims of being children of political opponents in the state.

“We have no political affiliations, we are just young people trying to better our lives and become productive members of society,” the students told The Nation.

Your Excellency, I understand there are other final year students who are stranded in India, Europe, Canada, UK and the Caribbean. Their parents have pleaded for your compassion.

A beneficiary of the scheme in the United Kingdom, Derefaka David Direh, said: “I am signing this (petition) because it is a painful experience to start a programme and not conclude it. Apart from the feeling of failure, it is demoralising for these young ones to have to waste so many years of their lives in foreign lands. A commitment made by one government should be a liability or responsibility of the new government.  Not only should  the 16 final year students  be catered for,  others who were awardees on the programme  should be apologised to and  compensated for the suffering and humiliation they have been put through as a result of non- commitment on the part of Rivers State. Is it stressed or traumatised doctors that we want to produce?”

Sir, unlike Kobani, Commissioner for Information Emma Okah made a lot of sense in explaining the situation to Hannah.  He alluded to the bad economy, which only a dead person, would not have felt in the last two years.

Let me quote Okah Your Excellency: “For those who are in final year pursing speciliased courses like medicine, the state government planned to pursue their welfare to the extent it can take. Some people have been coming and cases have been dealt with on merit. I do not know what has happened to these set of students.  I am just hearing it for the first time today.”

He said it was baseless to feel the students were abandoned on the assumption that they are children of political opponents.

Sir, on behalf of Adden Babeye Paul  (Asari/Toru), Amaechi Promise Adimele (Oyigbo),   Amadi Udochukwu Junior (Etche), Maakai Baribor          (Gokana), Precious Wifa (Khana), Baritore Princewill Ikpe   (Tai),Victor West Kpelene (Tai),  Nsiipu Namene Nsiipu (Tai) and other final year RSSDA scholars, please help work out an arrangement that will see them earning their degrees.

And as I sign off sir, please care more about the message. The messenger is inconsequential.

    Bye for now.

  • Governor Wike splashes millions on Rivers Utd

Governor Wike splashes millions on Rivers Utd

GOVERNOR Ezenwo Nyesom Wike (CON) on Sunday matched words with action as he watched Rivers United in a competitive game for the first time.

He was present at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt as Rivers United beat Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) 2-0 in a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) game.

United have impressed this season and are still in the running for glory in both the NPFL and the Federation Cup.

As part of plans to adequately motivate the club, Wike outlined several incentives which should spur players and officials of the club as the season enters the home strait.

The governor splashed N7 million on the football club for the win over 3SC in Port Harcourt on Sunday with a further N3.5 million set as the financial carrot each time the football club earns a draw away from home in the NPFL this season.

For an away win in any of their remaining matches in this season’s NPFL, N7 million has been earmarked .

The Rivers State chief executive also promised $50,000 U if the team defeats either Julius Atete FC or Enyimba International FC in the quarter final of this year’s Federation Cup.

The governor also revealed that a ‘special package’ awaits the football club if they reach the last four of the oldest football competition.

Rivers United is currently in third place on the NPFL standings with 44 points from 26 games, two points adrift of the leaders, Enugu Rangers.
