    BREAKING: Kano Governor Abba Yusuf resigns from NNPP

    Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has officially resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing escalating internal crises within the party and the need to safeguard the overall interest of the people of the state.

    The governor communicated his decision in a resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of the NNPP in Diso–Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area. According to the letter, the resignation takes effect from Sunday, January 25, 2026.

    A statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, confirmed the development, noting that the governor expressed appreciation to the NNPP for the opportunity and support it extended to him during his time in the party.

    “I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party, with effect from Sunday, 25 January 2026,” the letter read.

    Governor Yusuf rejects report claiming Kano has highest insecurity level

    The Kano State government has dismissed a report alleging that the state recorded the highest level of insecurity in Nigeria.

    Governor Abba Yusuf, speaking through the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, described the publication as “false, misleading, and completely untrue.”

    Waiya made the clarification while addressing journalists after defending his ministry’s proposed 2026 budget before the Kano State House of Assembly.

    He said Kano has continued to make significant progress in maintaining peace and protecting lives and property.

    The commissioner urged journalists and media organisations to adhere to professional ethics by ensuring fairness, objectivity, and accuracy in reporting.

    Waiya also cautioned against allowing the media to be used to advance political interests, warning that irresponsible journalism can undermine public trust and escalate tensions.

    He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining security collaborations with law enforcement agencies, traditional institutions, and community leaders to ensure Kano remains one of the most peaceful states in the country.

    No peace for illegal drug dealers in Kano —Governor Yusuf

    There will be no peace for any drug dealer in Kano state, Governor Abba Yusuf stated on Sunday, June 30.

    The governor was reacting to the boldness exhibited by some drug dealers who sought legal recourse through court orders for the release of their confiscated illicit drug shipments.

    Yusuf, in a statement by his spokesman, Sunusi Bature, disclosed that he was taken aback by their actions.

    “Governor Yusuf’s amazement was evident as he discovered that individuals engaged in the illicit drug trade had procured court orders for the release of their seized contrabands.

    “He conveyed his profound surprise at the judges who gave such orders, emphasising the severity of the issue at hand.

    “In response to this troubling development, Governor Yusuf instructed the state Attorney General to formulate a comprehensive strategy to prevent drug traffickers from exploiting legal loopholes in the future,” Bature said.

    The governor stressed the crucial necessity for collaboration between the judiciary and the government to save the state from the dangers posed by the the illicit drug traffickers.

    The governor urged KAROTA to take requisite actions to destroy the confiscated substances.

    Reiterating his administration’s unwavering dedication to combating drug smuggling within the state, Governor Yusuf affirmed governmental assistance to agencies committed to combating drug trafficking and abuse.

    “Governor Yusuf’s firm position underscores the seriousness of the drug trafficking dilemma and the urgent need for unified endeavours to protect the state from the menace of illicit substances,” the statement said.
